It's just a precision tool, if you're okay with sloppy work then don't worry about it but you'll pay any consequences

my DR650 came with protaper bars and no handguards on it when I bought it (the stock handguards and bars were in a big box of extra parts that came with the bike) and I've never put any on... The KLR turns pretty good with a set of road tires. Im running some Shinko 705's and love them.
They're 80% road, 20% dirt, and corner so much better than the stock knobies. Cheap as dirt too.

If your so inclined, you can upgrade the CC's all the way up to a 705 kit, but the 685 does pretty well with less work and cost.

If your a normie on facebook, the group "KLR650 wrencher's network" is very active and helpfull and can help with the big bore kits too.

It's not a really common bike in Mexico, you'd be able to order whatever part you need at a dealer but most places won't have anything in stock for the bike if you need it in a pinch. Even shit like tires, chains, sprockets, oil filters, fork seals, etc will more than likely all have to be ordered. That's no big deal if you can wait a week (or longer) but if you're on a trip somewhere and lose a tire or chain and need one to get back home then you might be shit out of luck.

Tires and chains use standardized sizes. The DR uses 18 and 21 inch wheels just like any other dual sport made in the last half century. I think the chain is a 520 which is also used on just about everything.

I was in the TX Hill Country and had to call 8 different places to find one that had a 17" tire in stock, otherwise I would've had to ride over 100 miles out of my way to either Austin or San Antonio. All of them said that they could order a tire and get it there in 2-3 days but I couldn't wait an extra 2-3 days. The place that had a tire only had 1 17" trailwing in stock, no knobbies or anything more aggressive.

The XRE300 is made in Brazil, they don't sell it in America but I've read that it's pretty common all over South and Central America and Mexico. It'll be a fair bit less powerful than the DR650 but should be 50lbs lighter or so. It kinda depends on what kind of riding you want to do -- If you're going to be doing much riding at highway speeds then I'd go for the DR650, if you're just riding city streets and dirt roads / trails then the XRE300 might be better, especially for offroad riding because it's lighter.
