Took a motor out of a 69 ford econoline thru the front. Also did an engine swap in a '69 camaro, which was surprisingly easy when you have the hoist and two friends. We did it on a steep driveway so we had to really be careful with the hoist with the engine in it

The first time I cracked open an engine was to replace a burned valve in this 2.4l 5 cylinder. The real misery is that the valve cover directly holds the cams in their journals. The gasket material for the valve cover is literally applied with a wiz roller to the entire thing.

In all my years of DSMing I've never done more than pull a head or trans.

Well I did buy a parts car once and pull the motor out of it though if that counts.

I've replaced the trusty ol' 350 in my chevelle twice but that's about it. Not much more difficult then building a Lego rocket ship. Though I've never really rebuilt it. I just pull her out, strip her to a short block and hand her over to a coworkers/buddies top alcohol team. I just pay for the freeze plugs, bearings, seals, (sometimes) rods, pistons, and whatever the hell else I need. Then a case or two of bud light covers the machine work and assembly. Pretty sweet gig. Then I hand the heads over to another buddy that works for V (he's worried about his job now, though. Madcaps on the market) and he works his magic on my heads for more beer. Then (sometimes them) and a different comp eliminator guy and my ex girlfriends dad ( top dragster guy) completely take over the nitrous. I'm so thankful for the community I've been blessed with.Haha like they say, it's not what you know but who you know. And bough I may mot be able to rebuild and tune a juiced engine on my own. I can prep the shit out of a track. I love it when big teams ask me my opinion on track conditions and now to accommodate them
>>
>>15453094
yuck, my work has me dealing with enough shit

>>15453094
on my truck I've gotten as far as pulling the trans to do the clutch and rear main seal.

On my '56 bug I've broken it down about as much as possible. Pulled the engine, trans, and all the suspension out. Pulled the body off the chassis to replace heater channels, bulkhead, and floor pans. rebuilt the motor, tore it all the way down to the bare case for new bearings and all that jazz.

My other bug as gone as far as having all the suspension removed and the engine/trans out.

That's baby shit, try replacing a valve on an engine in just 3 hours.

In the fucking dark.
>>
>>15454502
Honestly, I've been there. Except the replacement valve was sacrificed from a perfectly ruining pro e/t car that took too much stripe in the 1st round. I didn't personally replace the valve but my buddy and I drained and pulled the head of the doner car while the big boys dealer with the recipient car. I don't know how long it took but it was between 1st and 2nd round of a busy ass day so it might have been more then 3 hours. Hectic as fuck none the less though.

>>15453738
Sadly I didn't and I still kick myself for it. It was my only vehicle at the time so I was in a rush to get it back up AMD running asap which meant just having the cylinders bored .030" over and buying readily available new parts to throw in. I didn't want to spend time tracking down the various pieces to build a stroker. I also wonder if I should have done a cummins 4bt swap

Totally understand. I am in the middle of that myself, struggling with what to replace because I need it on the road, but the whole cars apart so why not replace it all.

http://www.jeep4.0performance.4mg.com/stroker.html

I have an old 4.2 siting in a barn and I really want to use those parts with a newer 4.0 to make a 4.6. When the car is put back together I may start collecting the parts to build one just to set in the shed until I fine a cheap Cherokee body. I just think it's neat what you can make out of a bunch of old used parts.

It's always tough to get that far into a project and go back together all stock. When you've only got one roller time is an important factor. I prefer to keep my daily driver close to stock for dependability and to take my time with other projects and do them right.

the last 4.0 i rebuilt out of an 89 had three pistons in pieces and still ran. Im not sure why these engines are so prone to breaking piston skirts but its very common.

I would suggest if you hear any clatter to rebuild the engine as you probably have broken skirts. The engine i rebuilt one of the pistons literally came out in three pieces, im amazed it still ran.

I've swapped at least 100 engines, 250+ transmissions, dozens of rear ends, probably 100 transfer cases, rebuilt 40-50 engines and transmissions each, probably close to a thousand brake jobs, unknown amounts of oil changes, pretty much anything you can think of I've done at least a dozen times.

Being a do it all type of mechanic means you do what needs to be done to pay the bills. Strangely enough, I've never done an alignment, and only a couple sets of tires changed.

Goal is 9:1 static so I can run 10+ psi on e85 without having to retard timing/ignition. Factory ford blocks only good for about 500 horses then turn into modern art after that. Hoping I'll have enough money saved by then to buy a dart block and then really see what this setup will do. Since this block was free I'm not gonna complain.

Considering the kenn Belle twin screw for the 5.0s and fabbing a2a cooler for it.
If I ever get to that stage of the build. Still bracing car and brakes and upgrading fuel delivery and special ethanol injectors coilovers and goddamn boost motors I'll probly never do it again after this.
>>
>>15460402
Cooler is almost pointless if youre going to run 10psi.
At 14 I would.
At 7 I wouldn't
10 is iffy.
You might lose more pressure than the temp change / charge density would benefit you.
>>
>>15460402
>>15460416
Umm just realized you said the kenne bell.
Twinscrew doesn't have anyway to route to a cooler, it replaces the lower manifold and pushes straight into the heads, no duct work after the screws that you could route.

Cool thing about twin screws though is that the density won't drop. And depending on how much HP 10 pounds yields; I'll turn it up till I hit max safe power for the block. I like twin screws, a lot. They can heat soak though. Several forums later this looks like the perfect solution.

There is a way.
>Weld shut the exit hole at the top of the housing.
>Make new exit hole
>Fancy welding

It's doable. And the numbers I'm seeing from the people who've done it are impressive.
>>
>>15460456
Pretty sure that's a custom build.
Side mount like on old gns, not on the manifold. I haven't seen any ford kits that mount like that.
>>
>>15460461
It is custom. Doesn't mean I can't replicate it.

I was just trying to think of how to do it with 5.0 style- one of those would require so much fab it really wouldn't be worth it IMO.
Didn't think of the old side mount ones.

The original ls1 lasted to 225k miles before it spun a bearing. Run hard, put away wet. Drag strip time on the weekends, days on gravel roads getting nasty when nobody else is about, interstate runs with the cruise set above 140, street races, etc. I'm surprised it lasted that long. The second ls1 ran for about 30k before it rained like a motherfucker for a week and the city drainage backed up and flooded flooded everything out. I ended up hydrolocking that one. Put an lq9 in it, 10k later hit a puddle in the bottoms that was deeper then I thought it was, bent every exhaust valve in the heads Bottom end checked out so I put a set of ls3 heads and some other bits on and called it good. Its got 300k miles on it now.

Engines are great unless you get water in them.

Oh, transmissions and rear ends though. I'm on rear axle number 4 I believe and it's guts have been replaced with a 3.42 lsd when it shit itself the first time. It's probably on borrowed time, but I've been trying to launch a bit softer to prolong it's miserable life.

This is transmission number four. It's a gmpp 4l60e that's been built up a bit by a local trans place. I don't work on it, fuck that, but they sure did a good job. Not a slip or soft shift under power in the last 7 years. That's the way to go, stock transmissions don't cut it if you abuse your car.

Suspension is (was) original and
>made it
to 300k miles. Rattled and creaked like a motherfucker for about the last 40k. A young girl turned out from a stop sign and I couldn't stop in time. I've since fixed what broke from that (spindle, fender, swaybar, wheel/tire) but was already saving suspension parts for a susp overhaul so I just bought a beater and left it in the air. I pressed the last bushing in today and have one lower balljoint that needs to be done, wheelbearings to put in, and shocks to put on before I can reassemble the front.

Should be back on the road in a couple weeks. Yay.

I'm pretty sure this is what my balljoints look like on my Firebird. My entire front end is nothing but thunks, thuds and clicking.
I have the new uppers, I should probably change them this week. How bad are the upper / lowers to do on a 4th gen?
Had a shop tear down my 150,000 mile 4L60E and the only issue was some wear on the reverse drum where the band clamps on it. 2nd would slip on a WOT downshift for 1-2 seconds. Got it all rebuilt with tons of goodies and a 3400 converter :^)
Haven't killed a 10 bolt (yet).

My 6.0 LY6 in my Sierra is at ~150,000 miles. Lifters have been ticking for over three years now. Cats are fried, my rear bumper has a nice black spot of soot all over it.
I beat the shit out of it and it just werks.

The uppers aren't bad, they get drilled out and the new ones get bolted on. The lowers are a bit of a bother though, the moog replacement parts are slightly oversized so pressing them in is a bear. I measured them with a caliper last night and the new ones are about .6mm bigger around. I put them in the freezer (bushings too) to shrink them a bit to go in easier, but using the press to do the lowers still makes me uneasy. This is my first time using a press and I was warned that pieces can shoot out the side when there is tension on the press and I've been hit and messed up by stuff before. You have to put lots of force on those lowers or ream out the hole, and I'm not reaming anything.

3/4 times it was my fourth that would start slipping, then third, then I was limited to first and second gear. If you've never hit the interstate using only second gear, it's not fun. One time I lost first and second though, no limping home there. I don't have a stall, I'm kind of wondering what that limits my cam choices to, I want something smallish anyway (218-220 intake dur) for the lowend. Don't really want that -loose- feeling of a big stall. How is it in yours?

They really are amazing. You have basically he same engine that I do except yours has beefier rods, slightly lower comp, relieved pistons, and vvt. Neat. I'm astounded by how much more power you can make with just a camshaft swap. Yours would be even better, they're doing great things with vvt cams these days.

>My 6.0 LY6 in my Sierra is at ~150,000 miles. Lifters have been ticking for over three years now. Cats are fried, my rear bumper has a nice black spot of soot all over it.
