Do you guys keep a good JIS screwdriver or bit handy for working on your Japanese bikes?

I need to pick one up myself.. I usually just end up using the POS screwdriver that came included in the bike's toolkit.

2006 KLR650
2001 XR-650R, street legal

Opinions? I'm starting to think it doesn't really matter.
Follow up bike will probably be sport touring.

KLR
>>
>>15452922
XRR if you can find a good one that's already been converted and plated. Keep in mind though that those bikes were pretty much specifically designed to destroy the Baja 1000 and as such, they're a legit race bike and will require more frequent maintenance than the DRZ or KLR. Note how small the oil capacity is for the XRR compared to a KLR, DRZ, or DR650.
>>
>>15452937
I've ridden all 3 of those bikes he's considering and the KLR was just tragic, it feels like a bus.

I'd get the dr-z soon as he's probably slow as fuck off-road and wouldn't be benefiting much from the xr650r
>>
>>15452928
I'd hoon around my neighborhood on one but I think that'd get old after a while. In my area you can't really get anywhere without traveling on 50MPH+ roads and I'd be afraid to try that on a 50cc scoot-scoot.
>>
>>15452955
all depends on location, i'd lean towards larger displacement if getting anywhere meant main roads
>>
>>15452826
But for realz, what do you guys think EBR should do next? I was thinking they should start simple. Make a 500-600cc reliable V-twin that they can make a cheap naked, supersport, and maybe a sport touring or ADV or something.

That way they can get into the cheap beginner market and build a customer base because 90% of people stay loyal to their first bike brand. Then when they get that going they can let Erik go nuts and make crazy shit.
>>
>>15452945
I don't think I want a converted race bike just due to the excessive wear that they've got, relatively speaking.

alright lads, rode the grom 5 hours today at my msf class, nothing fast unfortunately but here's my takeaways

>terrible seat
Anything more than an hour or two is gonna make your ass hurt
>light, super maneuverable
Very easy to throw around, lots of fun

Perfect if all you need is a third-world ass mover and you never need to break 40 mph. They're cheap and reliable. Of all the CVT scooters out there, it's probably the best per dollar.

Seriously though getting your license isn't hard especially if you're in the US. You can get a used bike in pretty good shape for just as much as a Ruckus would cost new. Plus riding motorcycles is fucking fun and stress relieving.

Also don't be one of those people who thinks that just because you're on a 49cc bike, it means you don't have to wear a helmet. Wear a helmet. Shit's dangerous.

Yeah you're probably right. Full systems are like $650.

I have a question though. I've learned to ride pretty well, and gotten pretty good dexterity, but my bike weighs 350 pounds. Looking at stepping up, everything weighs considerably more. Like the SV650, which seems like a logical next step, weighs another 90 pounds. Is all that weight down low where you don't really notice it so much? How can weight become a problem?

that's where you're wrong. if you spend it on a motorcycle you have one more fucking thing to move.

seriously put everything you own in a small uhaul, sell the rest, drive somewhere new and start over. it's the only fucking way to get out- having moved across the country twice on my own dime I know, I only regret not selling absolutely everything before doing it.

the longer you wait the more shit you'll have to either move or sell, so if you want out just fucking get out. stop making excuses and leave while you still can- because it's only going to get worse.

the guy was fucking mad as hell and I think he would have just ran me down their hadn't been a lane. it was more-than-usually-scary shit, but the idea of a car door from some self-righteous soccer mom it enough to keep me from doing it.

For some reason I want to avoid dealerships. Seems like they shoot high on prices. I know enough about things to not get fucked in a by-owner deal on CL unless things got really shady. Dealerships are a lot more haggle resistant too.

>For some reason I want to avoid dealerships. Seems like they shoot high on prices.
They shoot for MSRP. If you know your shit you can talk them down. It's not like they don't have used inventory either. A dealership isn't gonna price a used bike up like they do cars. The last time I saw an '09 R1 at a dealership used it was $4k out the door. If they try to fuck you like that, it's not a good dealership.

The GS500 and SV650 are fucking leagues apart. I'd suggest starting on the SV though.

GS500s are insanely slow. You should at least get something semi quick so you spend more time learning with forgiving suspension and less time thinking you're rossi and then moving up to a huge bike and fucking your shit up.

You can go straight from that to a liter peter. The 600 is just a much lighter bike than the liter peter. They're a lot more manageable so they're easier to handle in twisties. Liter bikes take a lot more effort but if you can handle a 600 you can handle a literbike.

Not a supersport. It's more of an in-between of a UJM and a supersport. Great bike to learn cornering, throttle control, balance, etc for a supersport bike, but not aggressive enough that it's unforgiving. Also a lot more torquey down low, which is good for a street bike.

Given a few suspension mods you could easily make one as good as a 600 on a track, however. They're not particularly slow bikes, they're just not as track oriented as a supersport.

what's forgiving about SV650 suspension again? it's dampening sucks next to 600s and literbikes, if anything it has less forgiving suspension than 600s and 1000s, bumps exist on the SV that plain don't on proper sportbikes.

The SV has a lot of qualities that make it quite forgiving to ride twisties on but I don't think suspension is one of them.

Actually one of the mounting bolts was missing - that's why I was getting zero damping.

Took it apart anyway but.
Lots of metal particles.
Inner working surfaces are quite scored.
One of the rectangular wiping seals has a piece missing.
The unit is 'non-rebuildable' so there's nothing I can replace.

I'm just going to fill it with 5w, get a tire shop to throw 100psi of nitrogen in there, and throw it back on the bike. See what happens.

hp =/= torque.
The SV redlines at 11k. Most 600s go to 17k. Hp is a function of torque * rpm * k, k being a constant variable.

It makes a lot more torque than a 600 and it'll easily spool up the rear if you're a fuckhead with it. That said, that's not really the dangerous part of a motorcycle for beginners. It's usually overly responsive suspension and extremely strong brakes.

Oh, and stupidity.
>>
>>15453995
hmm, I stand corrected, the figures I looked at weren't labeled so I just assumed it was crank hp. Still a good ways off from supersport power either way.

I think 600s are at least as good beginner bikes as SV650s, the SV650 might have less peak power but it's 0% to throttle on transition is far more aggressive and the bike jolts you way more in the low RPMs with the torque, you can power wheelie an SV nearly to balance point in 1st from 3,500 RPM with a good crack of the throttle.

>riding to a friends house
>next to a middle aged man with his fat wife on a Harley
>slightly behind him one lane over
>sound is deafening even through my helmet and ear plugs
>speed up just a little to get in front of him where the noise isn't as painful
>he takes this as a challenge
>he goes WOT on his fat cuckmobile
>takes off a little bit ahead of me
>drop three gears and pin it
>reel him in then blast past up to 130 on a road I really shouldn't be doing 130 on
>get some sick air off a bump
Remember kids, triple digit speeds on a 45 mph surface street is not the best idea, especially in Illinois where all the roads are shit.

Looks like you accidentally added a "not" there.

Diablo Rosso Corsas, unfortunately most of my actual riding doesn't give me a chance to scrub out my tires yet. Working on it.

DRZ

But XRR if you're gonna look after it right, otherwise don't bother as those things are highly strung and need good maintenance
>>
>>15454744
I mentioned it earlier, but a dual sport. Probably a KLR650, DRZ400S, or possibly a Kawasaki Versys. I'm 6'3 and my last bike was a tiny Japanese cruiser, so I'm pretty pumped to start riding again, but on a motorcycle that I actually fit on.

There's a 2007 Aprilia SVX 450 for sale near(ish) me, but I didn't want to marry myself to that maintenance schedule.
>>
>>15454780
If you take it up the newer specs it can be feasible
Still, it's a mad raecbiek, not for beginners
