Yeah but I don't know if i'll enjoy it as a daily thing, once I get more $$$ saved up and finish paying off these student loans (like that's gonna happen)

I'll pick up a stick shitbox and see how it feels.

>>15402947
I thought the GTP had awful reliability outside the engine.

A regal gs wouldn't be a bad idea. Too bad about the GSX model being super rare. I read it had awesome tuning/package.

>>15402921
Aren't saabs horrible at reliability or is that just VW i'm thinking of.

I don't mind some wrenching but i'm in an apartment now so lol apartment wrenching.

>>15403030
W-body cars are actually very reliable. But when you start adding power, the first thing to do is have the transmission rebuilt. It's fine with the stock power but anything more is gonna break it. But there's plenty of aftermarket support to fix any problems you have with it. Hell, Monster Transmissions offers a package to build up the 4T65eHD they come with.

>18-20 city
nope. I get MAYBE 10 city with a standard transmission. 18-20 on the freeway is about right. You will get even less with the auto.
also
>400hp with bolt ons
good fucking luck getting 300. 400hp is boosted territory on the 1uz unless you have higher compression pistons and fucking amazing headwork, with cams and a descent tune.
>>
>>15403306
Sorry, was wrong

https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/9795.shtml

18 combined. Still decent.
>>
>>15403337
How the hell are you getting 10 mpg city? That's farther south than rotary territory. Also, how is it hard to get 300hp? The engine comes at 280 stock, so it doesn't seem like too much of a stretch.
>>
>>15403367
its a old v8 car that weighs close to 4000lb with 3.9 rear gears. Im amazed it gets 18-20 cruising.

280 is crank hp vvti. The vvti engines do not like anything changed, they start to run like ass. My buddies 92 sc400 has worked heads, headers, 2.5 piping to the rear, and a bfi intake mod and it makes ~200 whp. Stock to the wheels is around 180 for the non vvti cars.
>>
>>15403397
200hp from a 1 uz? That's really shit. Why do people even buy the car if it performs so poorly?
>>
>>15403428
sc400 isnt a "performance car" in the sense that you probably use the word. Its a GT. Its meant to go fast, smoothly, silently, comfortably. It does all those things very well in stock form. 180 whp and a good amount of torque is more than enough to go 140 mph so its plenty for most people.

Im guessing you haven't ever gone that fast so I don't expect you to understand.
>>
>>15403463
You are right. Still, 180 in a 4000lbd car seems pretty low. I understand the car was made to be a luxury tourer, made to drive at 120mph whisper quiet, but it's still surprising to me that it's so low on power.

On a side note, would $3000 be a decent price for a roughish VVTI sc400? Seems like a decent deal to me, but after hearing what you have to say, I'm second guessing.

http://mywikimotors.com/toyota-1uz/

This says the VTI engine makes 300hp at 6k rpm. ?
>>
>>15403508
depending how bad "roughish" is 3k is pretty good for a 98+ car. Beware of bad lower control arm bushings and bad front ball joints. the ball joints are unserviceable and you need to dish out for new control arms at 400+ per side. I actually would rather find a car with bad suspension components and a good interior though. The lexus leather is great, but if left exposed to sun it cracks pretty bad. Most prevalent is top of rear seats and drivers seat. Also, the door panels tend to disintegrate and come apart at the handle on the insides. Instrument cluster inoperable is another common problem but they can be rebuilt.

I wouldn't worry about the hp ratings if I were you, Toyota has some trick shit in the transmissions of these cars that makes the shifts almost unnoticeable, and you can build momentum and go fast without trying VERY easily. Hard to explain unless you actually drive the car, its like having the wind at your back all the time.
>>
>>15403540
Thanks, your advice helps. The car had a minor front end fender bender, but it's not salvage title. Bumper is primered and cracked, and the hood has some dents that were knocked out. Other than that it seems good.
>>
>>15403550
If your willing to drive it as is, or willing to pay a shop to properly correct the damage, that could be a solid car. Its important to note that 97+ front bumper and associated body trimmings are quite expensive especially from dealers, and 92-94 stock lips are something retarded like 900$ from dealers. Probably best to buy used for body stuff.

Thankfully this is a 92. Honestly, I'm not too anal about it being perfect, so I'd probably just fix the headlight situation and it would be good.
>>
>>15403594
I can tell you from that picture that there is light frame rail damage. The bumper support is also bent by association. I guarantee the bumper support is either annihilated or non existent. to get the lights in there properly the radiator support would need to be replaced and a new "cage" that sits above the bumper support and holds the lights installed. The inside of the bumper also has plastic tabs that support the high beams and they are probably broken so the lights will sag. Id actually pass or offer like 1300 bucks if it runs good.
>>
>>15403615
*radiator support bent by association

not bumper support, sorry
>>
>>15403615
Don't think the seller would accept $1300. I think I'm probably going to pass, but thanks for the heads up, you probably saved me some trouble. Btw, are you the one guy who had the cs400? Could you post a pic of your car? Curious.

The 400 is actualy sold and my friend just needs to pick it up. pic is the 400
>>
>>15403658
Looks really nice. How hard was the swap? Did you do it yourself? I was thinking of lightly stripping the interior to shed some weight but for some reason, it just feels wrong.
>>
>>15403661
DONT STRIP IT. lol
but realy, just dont. Its not a race car.

The swap is straightforward if you buy one of the many kits. I didn't do the original install but I bought the car broken and had to take everything out and put it back multiple times. In my opinion though, these cars were never meant to be standard. The auto just drives sooooo gooood. With the short gearing meant for the vq35 and the steep 3.9 rear, the first 2 gears are pretty much redundant, and cruising is at least 500rpm higher than with the auto. You can literally go from a stop to 2nd, to 5th, to 6th all day.

Thats why I sold the car hah.
>>
>>15403680
also, most of the weight of the car is in the doors, hood, and the unibody. I dare you to try to lift a door by yourself without fucking something up.
>>
>>15403132
