I've been getting into working on my own vehicle recently after I bought a 2006 Elantra. Great price for a solid fucking car. I have to say everything has been fairly easy so far, although I haven't done much electrical work. It's been fun honestly, would recommend.

OP, get a pre-2001 Civic like many have already suggested. Even though I own an Avalon and a Sierra, I daily a 99 manual civic coupe for work and it's a great car to get started on.

Old ford with a straight six. 60s up to early 80s. Dirt cheap to work on. My old mustang and comet are pretty reliable, and its super simple to work on. You can pull the starter from under the hood, same with the oil filter. I've swapped the rear end on the pony in 40 minutes
