So I have an opportunity to get this '93 NA with 202k miles on it for like $3500

From what I've read, at that mileage it's just a waiting game for the 5S-FE to blow its shit.

Timing belt/water pump at 160k is the only maintenance record the dude has. I'll have to see how badly it leaks oil and everything I guess.

Is it even worth it getting it over a more practical car for muh driveng experience?

I'd be left with about $1000 to spend on maintenance and shit, can I drop something better in or would ya'll recommend as full of an overhaul as I can afford on the 5S

First car was an NA Miata, been test driving some Subarus and shit and holy fuck the gearboxes feel so vague and terrible, and it feels like driving a bus

I just wanna run the fucking toegay but I sorta need a practical car help me /mr2g/

Ok well let's say I do get it for $2000

I have rudimentary mechanical skills but can follow instructions and shit, have worked on bikes/older cars, have friends with grandpas and shit that would probably help me with the car

But at this point I'm practically clueless

What would keep me from buying a low mileage Red Top BEAMS on eBay for $1300 shipped to my door, having $1500 leftover to spend on other shit needed for the swap

From what I've seen on some forums it's a super easy swap?

Is the stock USDM NA 5 speed fine? Exhaust? I would imagine ECU and all that shit would need swapped or recalibrated or whatever the fuck

Anyone on /o/ actually know shit like this?
>>
>>15400556
I could likely drive it for a decently long time on the stock setup while accumulating all needed parts/refreshing the motor
Then do it over a weekend after having read some books and shit

It was either sell or have it turned into a cube.
Much rather the parts go to help others get back or stay on the road than just being recycled.

Jesus fucking christ I love sw20s.

But I'm really drawn to s2000s.

Not sure how I should go about it.

Where I live s2000s run along 10grand, and the only way I could get a sw20 is if I import one.

Given the extremely high import taxes, bringing back any of these cars in pick related would be well over buying a local s2000.

Plus I'd have the benefit of having a considerably more reliable car.

What do you guys think?
In the long run what would be more expensive to maintain?
>>
>>15403095
How is the s2000 considerably more reliable? I thought sw20s were pretty common worldwide.

Not where I live, theres a huge shortage of 80-90s sports cars.

The country as a whole didn't become a financial center up until late 2005, so pretty much where ever you find a 80s sports car its in extremely bad shape.

To be honest, in my time here in Panama I've seen lots of 350z, s2000s, some NA miatas, some supras, some AE86s and lots of integras and rsx's, but not one single sw20

I just heard the s2000 had little issues, besides rattling TCT and cracked valve retainers they are pretty reliable from what I hear.
>>
>>15403138
The NA mr2 had the Camry engine, and is very reliable. The turbo has the 3sgte and is also very reliable. There only thing is that it's harder to work on because the engine is in the back.
>>
>>15403138
You're pretty luck actually, I'm in costa rica although we have a whole bunch of sporty shitboxes (quite a few mr2s actually, you could come and buy a clean one for about $4k~) but gas is fucking retardedly expensive. I visited panama last year and I could fill up for a third of what it usually cost.

What are your guys thoughts on DDing an AW11?
>>
>>15405348
I did for several years. Wasnt bad at all.
>>
>>15405348
Doable, if you take into account it's an almost 30 year old car. Some things won't work right all the time, but it'll get you there most of the time. Keep in mind basic maintenance and replace the probably worn rubber parts, also keep good rain tires on it if it rains near you.
>>
>>15405348
My '85 AW11 is my DD. I love the thing. Mostly do errand-type driving, and a weekly/every other week 30 minute drive on the highway to the next city over for family shit and to use the garage. Just keep up with your maintenance, keep shit in good shape, drive carefully in the rain, and expect the occasional problem. I haven't had any major issues since cleaning everything up in the first couple months after I bought it, but mine still has really low mileage.
>>
>>15405398
Cheaper to buy? Not in my area.
>>
I'm going to look at an 85 this Saturday for $200.
It's really rough but runs well with 180kxxx miles. It's been sitting for a while and hadn't been started for 6 months, but it started right up on the 2nd crank with a jump. Voltages are going crazy, though. It definitely needs a new battery and maybe an alternator. It's got the classic rust problems in the usual spots, and I'm thinking of doing some not pretty but functional repairs with some fiberglass and filler. Is that completely stupid? Also thinking of chopping rust off the fenders and putting on over fenders. Not the best, but it's cheap and it's going to keep the car on the road for a few more years. Better than the bust for sure I think.

Downsides to the AW11 include the teeny tiny trunk, most of them don't have working AC (I'm lucky), a 30 year old car with a sunroof or T-tops is probably leaky (I've got a hardtop, another way I'm lucky), you might run into issues with moving parts like popup headlights, and it's only a two-seater. I've had issues taking things back and forth between my houses and in going on trips when I have a passenger. The trunk can comfortably fit 2 carry-on sized suitcases and maybe a backpack. The frunk has room but I avoid putting things in there because it's inconvenient. If you want to move anything particularly large you have to put it in the front seat which means you can't have a passenger and you risk fucking up the upholstery. So consider that stuff before you get one as a DD - it's a bit limiting to the things you can do with your car. I have to ask my buddy with a truck to help me move things pretty often and I'm never the one that drives for group activities (that part is a blessing and a curse).

>>15405494
Do whatever for your quick fix as long as you don't unnecessarily destroy the body of the car. Rust isn't gonna take you off the road unless it's like falling apart where it stands. Be careful though - my front bumper bar was totally rusted out on mine and I had no idea until I took the bumper off to repair some front end damage. A car that age is gonna be full of hidden problems. Expect to replace tubing and stuff like that early on.

>>15405392
Picture of my car for substance. It's gonna hit 45k soon!
>>
>>15405737
Thanks for the advice. I'm just hoping it lasts me about 2 years until I save up for something else. The front lip is completely rusted up and the little rubber thing at the bottom is falling off. I'm thinking of taking an angle grinder to it, cutting out the cancer, and making myself a new, larger lip to fill the gap that I just cut. If not, I'll just run it rusted like it is, work on the engine, eventually rebuild, and drop it into an sr5 86 or a starlet and scrap the aw11 body. i guess I can't ask much for $200.
>>
>>15405773
For $200 you're probably getting a total junker. But if it runs it runs, and it's more convenient than doing your grocery shopping using the bus. Keep an eye out for people scrapping other AW11s near you, you might be able to pick up some body parts that are less fucked than yours. It's a fun little car. Just go tool and around and so some power slides in parking lots in the rain. Get your $200 worth
>>
>>15405793
Hell yeah man, will do. It looks sad, but tires are michelins with 10k miles on them, brake pads have about 15k, it has an aftermarket exhaust (old one fell off), and the interior is mint except for some small rips that were stitched up nicely that I almost didn't notice. Pretty sure selling the exhaust on craigslist would land me about $200 in itself, but I need confirmation on what brand it is. 90% sure it's aftermarket, but I couldn't get a good look at it cause the car was parked up against a wall.

Damn, I'm too excited to be buying my first shitbox.
>>
>>15403399
I just a quick olx search in costa rica. Man you guys have some really nice cars listed.

Heres one for example.
https://sanrafaelabajo.olx.co.cr/miata-lindo-iid-887675053

the mr2s were mostly heavily riced AW11, so I can't count on seeing a sw20 thus yet.

Id even reckon I could just drive it back home given the car is in good shape.

Importing wise, I'm not really sure. When I went over to Panama I just drove over, but I was coming back. I guess call the equivalent of traffic authorities over there and ask about registering an imported car.

As for the driving thing, I would be careful. Crossing the border into Panama can be a bit of a pain, and the road from the border all the way to David is fucking terrible. I was driving a jimny back then and it was like driving on some actual steps for a a few hours. After that it's pretty alright though.

Bring an OBD2 reader with you and plug it in for an abbreviated idea of what the car thinks of itself. Remember that gauge lights can be turned off and then certain sensors might be adjusted to not give a reading. For example, if it has no cat, the O2 sensor could be offset.

>HOW THE FUCK IS YOUR CAR SO CLEAN WHAT THE FUCK

I have a 1997 cavalier and it still looks brand new and shines great too. It is how you take care of the paint that pays off nearly 2 decades later. It should get to 200K miles at least since the engine is still in good shape. It's had synthetic oil and frequent changes almost all its life, so that may have helped.

It's too bad that it has almost no value used because it's a "cadaverlier". The 2.4L engine has quite a bit of power for that car's weight. I have a new 2016 but kept this one because the trade-in value was so low for what I felt was still an excellently driving car with no problems.

Just take care of your paint with regular waxing. Not just a spray and wax, but use a real wax. Wax adds more UV protection, but also physically protects the clear coat and the car will stay new looking with its full color. People often marvel at how great the nearly 20 year old car looks despite being a daily driver all that time.

I'm pretty new to MR2s and im curious about something-- so I get why the 2nd gen has a different appeal than the 1st and 3rd gens. However, most stats seem to make the 3rd gen out to superior to the 1st gen in every way (except styling). The w30 has more horesepower than the w10/aw11, and it weighs less.. and they sell for relatively similar prices.

so what's appealing about the 1st gen, other than looks?

Honest question friends.

What kind of looks do you get from people in the streets when they see you riding up?

Not to sound rude or anything, because I absolutely love all classic Japanese sports cars, but what kind of reactions do you get from people?

I guess in the US there's quiet a bit of a developed car culture, and appreciation for classic cars.

But where I live, you'd roll up to thousands upon thousands of current year plastic pieces of automatic garbage. Seriously current year and driving cuck machines is fucking wasteful.
