Why the T5 specifically?
There are dozens of other vans in that class.

If you search the name of a van and the word camper you are bound to find dozens of videos on YouTube to give you an idea of space.

I found an 85 Vanagon near me in my area. wondering if they are good project cars? difficult/expensive to work on for a mechanical noob?

Most of them share PSA engines.
But FIAT models especially often have multipe choice of both FIAT and PSA engines.

Also, the Peugeot 308SW is another good oneespecially with the full length panoramic roof option.

The T5 is definitely the most popular commercially done conversion so there are a lot of designs you can take inspiration from.

Vans are generally more reliable than cars, the condition is more important really.

Huge availability of parts and pretty simple to work on.
Also a lot of information and dedicated forums, and just for that reason it would be a good choice for a beginner.
Just make sure its not too big of a project.

I guess if you have money you could just get a t5 california, which is a prebuilt camper with 2nd bed(the roof opens up)

What kind of conversion do you want to do?

Just a simple sleeping platform with storage underneath?

Or do you need a table, a bench, and cooking area and things like that?

Basically do you want living space in the van or just for sleeping
