Yeah, it's mainly there to cut off fuel if one of the vacuum lines fail and don't shut off the fuel when you turn the car off. But it's still there if you ever get a runaway, and it's a HELL of a lot safer to kill the engine that way instead of trying to clog the air intake. It's even conveniently on the other side of the engine from the intake so your hands aren't anywhere near it.

There's literally no other choice than trying to stop the airflow. Stuff your shirt into the fucking air intake and pray.

Tranny-stop a runaway will only work when you're lucky AND the engine is <70hp and you know how to fucking do it (if you don't know it, no matter how you do it, it will slip and never get a grip)
>>
>>15377634
Bullshit, you get wheelspin and unless the car has an american clutch, it will bite, your car will start going forward, you can then stall it. You can optionally shift upwards if there's room and stall it from fifth.

>5th gear
Besides the fact that not all cars are manual, old trucks only had 3 or 4 gears. You would simply burn it out until it starts walking, in fact you now would have a runaway car.

I'd say the best options are to trim the fuel hose from the back, or disconnect the fuel pump cables if accessible. Maybe just pull out the fuse?
>>

>>
>>15377757
>I'd say the best options are to trim the fuel hose from the back, or disconnect the fuel pump cables if accessible. Maybe just pull out the fuse?
No, the problem with a runaway diesel is that its reaction is so powerful it is literally sucking the fuel out of the tank on its own. Pulling the fuse won't do anything; you'd have to cut the fuel lines or block the air intake to stop it. You've got to break the chemical reaction in the engine.

>>15377794
Plus if it's running on it's own oil like an old diesel could, that's not going to do shit
>>
>>15377686
That won't do anything. It'll suck whatever inside and damage the engine. At this point the engine is fucked either way so better let it die naturally

Ummm potato in exhaust? Or something that could choke it in its own farts?

I know the potato principle will not work because it will fly towards your face. But what about something that you could force it inside and keep it inside. Like a massive tampon. Or a dildo. IDK.

Or put a hose in max and fill the tank with water?

IDK I wonder.

Apparently it got so hot the water pump seal literally exploded and shot all the coolant out, replaced the water pump and it's still running fine to this day :3
>>
>>15376419
Unlikely. Could be a number of things, including the vacuum plunger that shuts off fuel to the pump, or a blocked vacuum hose.

If it's worn rings, you should notice blue smoke coming out of the exhaust. Also, the exhaust will have an oily residue.
And it takes a lot of oil to keep an engine running so you will notice plenty of oil missing.

If you see blue smoke, try using heavier weight oil. Sometimes this is a good temporary fix.

Water likes to blow apart injector tips because of the molecule size. Best way to deal with a runaway is to grab a fire extinguisher, wait for her to catch fire, then empty the extinguisher on the ground. Only sure thing is a PASS. other than that just enjoy the show!

Redline does not mean fuel cut....it's the maximum safe rpm
>>
>>15389658
To be fair diesels have a sort of natural "cut off" not much farther than redline because diesel fuel simply can't burn fast enough for the speed at which the pistons are turned (the flame reaches the piston when it's already going down on its own as opposed to actively pushing the piston down, thus producing little to no power).
Old diesel cars had no electronic redline, the engine simply had a massive drop in power around 4.5k rpm and couldn't rev any further.

I don't know how much redline is raised because of burning oil instead of diesel, but my guess it's not much

>>
>>15376409
This happened in my old shitbox once. Apparently they rewired the ignition wiring onto a radiator fan, so that when I turn the car off and remove the key, the engine can continue running as long as the fan continues to spin and produce an electric charge from the motor attached to it. It used to run for 5-10 seconds after killing it before dying on its own, nice and smooth.

When I used to work for a GM dealer I always thought that story about the Captiva was some kind of urban legend.
Until one day I see a Captiva being towed in the workshop with the front end quite damaged, the owner said he woke up hearing strange noises from the garage, went to check and found his car hitting the garage wall multiple times because the starter kept engaging on its own.

Fucking Captivas man

I always wondered about keys in general, but at the same time, absolutely nobody goes to another vehicle, or house, under the suspicion their key might work. It would take brass balls to just walk around trying to open everyone's stuff.
>>
>>15398682
thankfully this wouldn't be terribly successful with newer cars

a physically identical key will turn the barrel and, in my experience, crank the starter

but without the transponder chip, you won't actually be able to start the engine
>>
>>15398682
I've done it with bump keys in high school. Me and a buddy would go to the white people neighborhoods and check cars out front occupied houses to see if they were locked or if you could wire hangar them, and houses without cars or lights on we'd go and check doors/windows and try to bump key them open. We got into quite a few cars and bagged a bunch of swag that way, including cigarettes and beer in trucks and jeeps, change cups and bags, a wallet or two, and a .38 which we sold to a chill at school. The houses usually didn't have an alarm on and we could get in and bag anything we could carry. Tons of Xbox and play station games, cash from wallets, watches, and a diamond necklace we pawned 2 towns over for 4 grand. We were terrified the whole time but the rush was amazing.
>>
>>15398698
I can't even imagine how awkward it would be to be in someone's vehicle, and have them find you there. That should be the next TV show similar to "Punked" with Ashton Kutcher.

>>15398774
And have registration, and everything ready, so fake cops would come, and bring the angry owner to the nut house, where they'd disclose they're on a show.
>>
>>15398825
It would need good planning, and would work better on more generic cars, in large parking areas, so the owner was second guessing themselves.

Unless it's an auto, put it in 5th gear, and dump the clutch with the foot hard on the brakes. This is so incredibly logical and easy i cant believe how many retards will just leave the engine running until it sudokus. This is the best solution, blocking the air intake is inefficient.
