God tier euro E30 here. Currently in shitbox mode

Any suggestions on the best place in the US to find an LCI 750il (1999 - 2001) with a bad engine / transmission?

I'm about 70% done with a full rebuild of an M73, and looking to drop it into another car, but everything I find for sale is running or pre-lci.

Did find a 2000 silver on black with a bad engine and trans, destroyed interior, and sections missing from the electrical harness for 4K. Not even close to worth it.

Sad too, because for as close to I am to being ready, I'd have actually paid $2500 for it.

Megasquirt is the cheapest aftermarket EMS, that's really the only reason to go with it unless you like building, troubleshooting and tuning yourself. Does anyone know of any good owner's guides or similar? Not a service manual but maybe some tips on servicing, care, and things to look out for? Also maybe a good code reader since I've been told it's basically mandatory for this car

If we got the Euro E36 M3 in America they wouldn't have sold 26,700 of them in a time when Americans weren't buying sports cars. Thinking about picking up a good condition 325xi wagon with 170k for $4k. Clean carfax and documented service history. I don't really care about the lower power compared to a 328 or 330, I just want a comfy and spacious daily because I do a lot of traveling.

Aside from the radiator/cooling system issues, is it due for a major service? I should have $2k left over after I buy it for anything major.

Considering buying one in a year and test drove the E90, some thoughts (from a 370z/Miata owner if relevant)

-Power is a little underwhelming (328i, like fuck I'm dealing with the 335i shitting out on me constantly) although it's decent and consistent due to the I6's flat torque curve. It's not fast or slow, maybe "quick"
-Steering is heavy as fuck
-I still cannot find the reverse gear on BMWs continuing the tradition from my friend's Z3
-Interior feels a bit cheap for a 2011 muhgermanluxury car, even if it's entry level. Mostly because of all the hard plastic around the radio/climate control area that's reminiscent of a 80s Toyota.
-Base model seats are ass; if you're going to put leather in then make it nice and soft, otherwise cloth would be preferable. Maybe if I adjusted it better things would be different.
-Unsure of the handling since every car I've owned either handled really well or was lmaopigfatcantturn (S197 Mustang GT, hurr). I'm also buying an E92 and drove an E90 so I'm hoping the coupe's handling is better.
-Shifter is obnoxious; we have a long vertical throw but gears are laterally crammed together; kept hitting 4th instead of 6th. The shifter itself is nice and smooth though.

already sitting on coil overs + cold air intake with K&N filter and has changed the car a lot. Much more responsive but the original dual mass flywheel defiantly feels like a bottleneck.

I know that on car's with the m44/m42 engine the original air box is so damn restrictive. BMW made it that way to be quiet, but the car definitely pulls more and is a lot more rev happy. It's a fun light car to go through some twisties now.

i think the fronts had not been changed for 50k miles and the rears for 60k, fronts had a pretty noticeable lip

Owned 2 E34 sedans, first one was an M20B20 1988 model with absolutely no equipment aside for LSD, so nothing to break.
Second one was a 1992 sedan with the M50B20 non vanos and power everything, everything worked and it was sturdy as fuck, perfect hoon mobile.

i think the e92 gets the sport steering wheel by default, as well as xenon headlamps instead of halogen
and the sport package for the e92 gets somewhat stiffer springs and some other slightly more sporty stuff
also power seatbelt handing things, its a little motorized diddly that pushes the seatbelt strap forward when you start the car so you dont have to awkwardly reach behind your head to get it

Already have rear strut mount reinforcement plates and did my trans/shifter 2 months ago, and my rear shock towers are already cracked lol. Front, mine's a 97 so it should have the factory plates. Would it make sense to double up on them though? 2 reinforcement plates vs one?

For the E36 fags, how necessary is a oil pan baffle?

I want the m50 since it's block is so strong, being right hand drive though the steering column is in the way for most turbo applications. RHD manifolds are like $1200 plus your soul.

after fighting with it for days, i finally bought a 24mm wrench (fucking massive, largest i own was 20mm) and lowered the hardtop striker/mount a little bit so it stops rubbing on my paint and squeaking like crazy.

Gonna put it on tomorrow and find out if it helped, don't have anyone to help me put it on right now :(

Hope i aligned it just right, really dont want to take it off and have to adjust it further..

it's not issues fitting the turbo but the down pipe, so damn tight most likely has to be custom fabricated to avoid the steering column. Defiantly worth it though, people have pushed them to 400-500 with just an mls + studs.

I love the M6s burbles, the Porsches have the amazing scream the best sound. Corvettes are just being obnoxiously loud, Fords were definitely most interesting. The rest were not very notable.

Sucks M6 had lead for so long and lost it at the end. At least it kept podium. I want to see a Porsche win for once though.

hey guys

britbong here, I bought this 316i compact for a first car, it is insurable and it is currently insured however I have been driving for no more than a month and i can already feel like I should of had something with more power.
How can I get more power out of the cuntpact without doing anything too major, i've heard cleaning fuel lines can give me some of the original power back.
I also can't engine swap or really swap for another car as insurance at 18 is super high even on just a 1.6

You call the place you want to perform the PPI, explain your situation, schedule it, then call the car dealer and give them the contact info. Pay with CC over the phone. They should arrange the rest. It's a 228i with M Sport! So it essentially looks like an M235i, minus the twin black exhausts, upgraded M Sport brakes, the Audi wannabe grey mirror caps and none of the performance. The M235i may or may not be 1" lower but M Sport in recent years do include the M Sport suspension, just not the M Adaptive suspension.

If the 228i and M235i were the same price, I would pick the M235i in a heartbeat. However in the real world, I couldn't justify the significant price premium despite the huge performance upgrade.

Definitely go for it! It should be a no brainer if you can accept the premium. The sport seats and M steering wheel alone are worth it for me personally. The standard steering wheel is so plain feeling compared to the M steering wheel.

Went to see another silver 90k '99 Z3 coupe today, black interior. Better condition than my old E39 when I bought it, but still wasn't quite impressed. Cracked foglight, some interior bits broken/missing, odd sound from the rear at 50+ mph, HVAC fan speeds 2-3 didn't work. I think just about any 2-Series variant will be the best driver's car BMW currently makes, in a purist form. It's just a bonus that it happens to be the least expensive!

As you may have read already, most reviewers will agree. It just simply is a well sorted out chassis, very balanced, perfect weight distribution, more than adequate power. It just drives very well and feels the perfect size. Some will complain about the lack of feedback but just about any car in this range will feel the same. It's just one of those things that is not going back to how it used to be so might as well accept it.

It may be eclipsed by some more hardcore and sporty oriented vehicles on comparisons but BMW has long stopped playing at their level anyway. I can enjoy this vehicle every day of the week, all four seasons of the year. It will do bumper to bumper traffic or weekend cruising and be more than presentable in any social situation.


As for 228i vs. M235i, it's really up to you! The beauty of the German brands is they offer so many choices to fit as many lifestyles as possible.

M235i owners will appreciate the much superior performance and hardware upgrades, front heavy, weight distribution, price premium be damned.

228i owners can enjoy the balanced chassis, tossability and lighter feel. All that for a lower cost.

Unfortunately, I was shopping for a new vehicle. And all else being equal, The M235i will always be more expensive to purchase, maintain, insure and run than the 228i. Not to mention the extra premium to pay to get them to similar equipment levels.

Of course, I would love the 35i but simply could not justify it at the moment. That may change in a few years! Really pining on the 40i models down the line if I don't want to try another make.

I spent about an hour taking my seats out and replacing both driver and passanger seatbelt pretensioners and occupancy sensor in the passanger seat as the seats came from a wrecked car and when i originally put them in i didn't notice the detonated pretensioners.

also put my HT back on.

Gonna see if i find someone with a GT1 interface closeby or buy a vag com cable in another attempt to reset the airbag light myself as clearly, dealerships want nothing to do with me and the indie mechanic i always go to hasn't been able to clear the light, even with a maxidas machine

The dealership near me is fine but I still go to an indie mechanic that buys his parts directly from BMW at pretty decent prices. He even got some of the old tools in to work on my car. Pretty nice guy too, he claims that of all the old BMWs hes seen, mine is probably the most clean and well maintained one he's ever seen. I've had a few different mechanics say it over the years so I guess I'm doing things right.

Removing the water pipes and rear water accumulator made it a hassle. Had to buy gasket tack so they wouldn't slide off when trying to reinstall it on the back of the motor

OK guys, problems problems!

So sometimes when I go to start the car, nothing. Not always, just sometimes. Not cranking, not making noise like that ticking with a dead battery. Just nothing.

I have absolutely no idea what the problem is. I'm guessing it's probably something electrical, like the signal isn't even being sent to the starter. Or maybe the starter is on its way out? I don't really know.

Any ideas?
