Air is thinner at altitude meaning you will run richer than at sea level. You may need to jet down or lean your carb out slightly to compensate. Some factory carbs had mechanisms to read outside air density and tune back fuel but that most likely isn't what you have.

Doing a temp paintjob since having random spots of primer just looked like ass, trying to get the car all one color.

I always wondered if you trimmed down the shock towers like they did on 69 boss' (but slightly more for you) and either did the tiny coil overs that are mainstream now, or did the modified McPherson strut setup like on the fox bodies (with stand alone strut and spring moved between lower control arm and frame) if you could keep a lot of the "factory" parts with just slight reinforcements.

Was hit square in the middle and had a super shitty repair done to it. I could have probably saved it but I found a parts car with the piece in good shape, this way my entire car has maybe an ounce of filler. Top alternator bolt broke in half on my galaxie today, sheared completely flush with the head. Gonna be a bitch to get it out. Luckily the spacer for it fell in just the right way for it to jam itself against the alternator and the block itself, allowing the belt not to slip and I drove it 20 miles home.

I come asking for advice. Would buying a running, but rusted-to-fuck Galaxie for $700 be a bad idea? I already saw it in person, and it drives, but the rust has me concerned, and I don't know enough about older cars to know if this particular model is worth it for the amount of rust it has. (Mostly floorboards and door trim are rusting through.)

If it was any more I'd say fuck no, but this is great if you want to learn how to weld in new sheet metal, its a four door so they aren't really desirable, but you can do whatever you want to it without feeling guilty.

i find the easiest part of fixing a car is the engine as its easy to source, bolt on and done in steps with good troubleshooting advice

the hardest part about any old car is its rust. Welding in new floor pans, sanding it, bondo, making it flush or prepping the entire car for paint is the shittiest job for me. If it were up to me i would wait for a clean rolling shell with interior and source my own engine+trans, but for $700 its really not a bad price

The TCI kit welds in so it would be a mess to move it to another car. Tubbing won't get you much clearance without relocating the leaves to the inside of the framerails and making new rear mounts. IIRC the rear end width mounting surface to mounting surface is 58"

Rear is narrower than that, but relocating the springs isn't a big deal either once youre already in that deep I'd think. My main concern is not doing it and then getting it all together and hating it because the 225 won't hook at all and then having to take it all apart again.

I haven't purchased it yet so who knows, but the plan for this is a 427w which even on a bad day with a hydraulic roller will be around 450ish to the wheels. Doing the suspension and brakes before I even mess with the engine build. Don't want this thing to be a death trap.

You're closer to one of my dream builds than you think. I actually did a short post about it further up. Take a 61 or 62 Buick Special Wagon, turn it into a pickup, put all the subframe kajiggers and floorpan from a first gen Tempest in it, install the transaxle and suspension from a C5 or C6, implant a supercharged Rover V8 crate engine (simply dropping in an LS or other completely unrelated modern V8 just feels wrong, and there are one or two companies that sell recreations with most of the faults taken care of). How can I easily register an older car that doesn't come with a title? The one I'm looking at is coming from Alabama and they say you don't need a title for old cars in Alabama. All you need is a bill of sale with you and the sellers signature, the correct vin number, and the selling price/trade offer. And two forms of ID.

If there's any problem, like mine when they couldn't pull up the vin, they'll give you a vin verification sheet.
Then you go home, call the non-emergency police number and ask to get an officer out to verify your vin off your car. He will fill out the sheet and you bring that in with everything else.

Hmmm delicious mud. Some of it actually seemed to get into my ignition system. Engine was misfiring badly so it kept stalling if I didnt give it any gas. Above 1500 RPM it didnt misfire anymore. After a few miles the water that must've gotten into my plug cables seemed to have dried off and everything ran fine since.

I had never seen a '68 or '69 without that trim piece until you mentioned this. I wanted to say that they're factory and you've probably only noticed it on partial restorations but I've found multiple examples on Google Images of very restored '68s and '69s without that piece (pic related). The body panel itself is still molded for that piece but the actual trim isn't there. Weird. I wonder if it only came with the SS pack.

Been lurking for a bit. Decided to post.

Recently decided to restore my father's 1965 Pontiac Bonneville convertible with his help. It's been a little bit over a year since we started restoration (May 30, 2015) and it has it's antique plates since September. Pretty nice car to cruise around in with the top down. Although it doesn't have a motor for the top yet b/c the original one leaked, so it had to be removed. (This was prior to it being stored since 1986).

Original owner had a bit of money for a car like this, has a Turbohydramatic-400 Trans in it, with power steering and brakes, along with the 421 cci w/ original 4 bbl. Carter carburetor.

My plan next year is to swap the front clip to the '72, and repaint it into the Gran Torino from Gran Torino, as equal parts "that's what I want to do", and as to have another movie car to have in my movie car group I'm in with a bunch of my friends (I have a replica of the Dodge Ram from Twister). I already got the front clip lined up, along with the sport hood. Missed out on the complete '72 351C Ram-Air set up, but oh well.

Things to be done: friend is taking care of all the rust under the vinyl top (there's a LOT), replacing the floor pans (they're slathered in bondo... thanks, previous owners) and then I'm trading my 1973 Pontiac Formula Trans Am 455 engine to my other friend (who is in my movie car group, he owns a replica of the Smokey and the Bandit semi, along with a shitton of Trans-Ams and classic Chevy's) to do some body work, swap the front clip, and repaint. That just leaves me finding the paint, new vinyl top, buying the floor pans, and finding the laser stripe. I was going to do it this year, but decided to focus on the Twister Replica Project.

For $800 it's not great, but not horrible. The body is mostly straight, except for a few dents on the trunk/bumper. Biggest job is where the vinyl top was on it, the roof skin is rusted away and parts of the floor pan need patched. The original 455 engine in it supposedly still runs and drives but I haven't tried it out yet.

Replacing the gasket on the fuel sender on my 61 truck today. Still has the original sender too. The gas smell in the truck was getting to the point that I felt like I was gonna pass out.

Engine spins freely. I was cranking it earlier but mice ate through the wiring harness, so I can get it to start.

Not sure what I'm gonna do with the body. A guy wants to buy the body off of me, throw a SBC into it and take it into demolition derby. I have three projects going on right now so it'll be a pile of rust by the time I get around to it.

But it's kinda sad to send an old car off to it's death. Even if it is a rotbox.

I'm having second thoughts on selling it to the guy who wants to derby it. If you came to get it you'd need a way of getting it up on a trailer. It would have no rear end on it.

Haven't checked the floor pans yet but the roof is most definitely fucked.

My belief was that it was a charcoal canister for vapors from the carb rather than having that flex tube that ran down to the chassis mounted one.

However I ran across a discussion some time back that suggested that it was some sort of noise dampener but I'm not entirely sure I believe that. I would need to see what's inside one since I've never really cared to look before (and not all THAT interested now).

How bad are shorter gears for occasional street driving and weekend hooning/drag racing?

Where is a good place to find new wheels that are 8 lug? This is actually my first vehicle and I got it because I wanted to learn how to work on a V8 and while I'm rebuilding the carb I figured I should also replace the wheels because the front are 16" and the rear are 16.5". I'd rather have uniform size and not pay out the ass for rear tires. I also have a lot more questions.

After 20 years of sitting(the license plate says 96, i believe it), I plugged in a 'new' ignition control module from my maverick, put in a 'new' coil also from the maverick, respliced the wiring harness that someone cut clean through for some fucking reason, and....
