Fuck yes. I had to sacrifice $75 though.

>>15284138
If it's dysfunctional it can be a pain in the ass. I tried like 50 different adjustments to try to get it to work before just putting in a replacement. Plus you have to pull the carb for every little adjustment, which is a pain in the ass on some bikes. Takes like 20 minutes for me to get it out of my DRZ.
>>
>>15284138
I did that almost on the daily with my XL250s

The only time I touched the carb on my DR650 was when I first got it, I pulled it apart and cleaned the shit out of it and put it together again. It runs just fine now, so I don't fuck with it like >>15284146 said.

Think it's due for another oil change or just some general love though, when I accelerate too quickly in 1st gear sometimes, I feel something catching down low- like a gear is clunking into place or a chain is catching or something like that. Kinda spooky desu

I always keep a clean air filter and I have a fuel filter. It wasn't dirt. My float needle looked scratched. It seemed to move freely when I had the carb out but it could never regulate the fuel level properly.

When I put the replacement carb in it was jetted way wrong so I even moved the main jet and needle from my old carb into that one.

Riding dirt (in my experience) has been more dangerous than on road riding.
Pic related was from my kx250s foot pegs.

Was also the first on site where a guy rode off a 10m cliff and broke his neck landing in a dried up creek. Will never forget the screams of that man.

At least riding on the road you know what to look out for (for the most part).

That's what I told them. A smooth predictable paved surface is much easier to not crash on.

The thing is when on the road you're generally going faster so impacts can be more severe, and there's 2 ton heaps of steel fully unaware of your existence.

Good way to put it really. Dirt bikes don't have first gears that'll hit 100mph and people who shouldn't be allowed to drive anymore in boxes of steel.

Someone broke their neck behind my house on this steep as fuck little kicker table top we used to ride. The lip and landing both were almost vertical so it would just launch you straight up like 10 feet and then straight down. Anyway he over jumped it and the bike just nose dived straight into the ground. It was fucked. Basically like jumping off a 15 foot roof onto your head.

On the rode it's mostly collar bones and shoulders (provided a car doesn't hit you). Motocross riders have literally broken like every bone in their body by the time they are pro. Shit is crazy.
>>

nah mine was a dirt bike crash, front wheel kicked a tree branch into my swing arm at about 110km/h just as i came over the rise on a hill, was thrown off the bike and flew about 30 meters through the air before hitting a bank then getting cleaned up by the bike

Yes, but I wasn't rear ended at lights, nor did the accident you're thinking of put me in a coma.

Car didn't give way at a T-Junction and drove into the side of me. I went headfirst into a curb. I have a large memory blank but I was never unconscious from records.

Apparently when I was driven to the police station to report it I was trying to chat up the officer lol.

Love it. I still wish I had the sound of an 09-14 but everything else about the bike is fantastic. We're heading into winter now and the warmth from the engine is really nice haha. Come Summer I'll be whinging about it blasting 100C+ air on me again though.

The low end power is brilliant, even on a model famous for having no low end power. Fantastic for around town, although I'm still getting the MC22 sorted for twisties and track riding.

>Dropped it yet?
Nope. It wouldn't matter too much either way with all the paint work being done.

>What the fuck is a postie?

I'd say it has a lot to do with the level of riding people do. MX tracks probably encourage people to ride above their limits in order to clear the fuckheug jumps. Most trail riders take it easy and calmly through the trails. When getting to a good race pace I'd say the risk increases exponentially.

Hello, /dbt/. After years of lurking, I believe my time has come to finally buy a bike (my first!). I understand that only reading things can help me learn so much, so I'd really like some advice from y'all

I'll be saving up money throughout the summer so unless everything comes out to be over $10,000, I'll be able to afford it.

I'll be buying a secondhand bike (the budget in mind is about 2500 give or take) and I'm thinking of a cruiser style. It'll be 250cc or 300cc. My main concern is that I'm very short (5'1") and I want to touch the ground when I'm stopped.

I'd like to ask, what brands do you recommend the most when shopping for gear? About how much money did you spend on your first motorcycle + gear? How much does insurance cost for y'all? And are there any recommendations/anything you'd do differently from what you did when you first started getting a bike?

Thanks so much!

pic related: one of the models I'm looking into

You should go find yourself a nice quiet bit of road and practice your emergency braking, every time i go for a ride i practice my emergency braking and because of that i have never made a mistake when it actually comes to a situation where i actually need all of my brakes.

Just let it serve as a lesson, i too was once unaware of my inability, no one is perfect.

I suggest a 1980s Suzuki GS550/250T

They're great starterbikes, comfortable, easy to use, and they turn so you can actually go fast.

My brother is 4ft9 (no bully hes a cripple) and when i was helping him test ride bikes we found the Kawasaki eliminator 250v to be the best cruiser on offer, the 600ish cc bikes are simply too heavy and don't really offer any advantages, the 250v was actually faster at accelerating to 100km/h than most of the bigger bikes and it is easily one of the most comfortable cruisers on the market if you are on the short side.

Id highly recommend you test ride one
>>
>>15284738
Damage on the bike was all cosmetic. I walked away from it, so I was happy. Gonna start practicing my braking and shit from now on. I'm pretty new to bikes, so I never realized how easily you can get fucking killed on them.

>>15284757
What would be a good first bike? I'm used to riding dirt bikes and shit, so I thought I'd be fine.

>>15284762
Yeah, I've been practicing a lot in the town hall parking lot in my town. Apparently it hasn't been enough.
>>
>>15284760
250/300cc cruisers are seriously lacking in power/speed. Rebel 250's barely make it to 70-80mph, whereas a Ninja 250 will easily do 100mph.

Aim for 500-800~ish cc for cruisers, and keep an eye on the weight of them as they're heavier by design.
>>
>>15284781
if you are just learning my honest opinion is you should start learning how to brake on dirt roads, the wheels starts to slip much sooner so it is easier to find the feeling for when something is about to lock up plus when it does lock it is much easier to save than on tarmac.

Personally i can lock both front and back wheels on road or dirt and not end up on my arse simply because i have been practicing doing it for well over 18 years (obviously i have fucked up a lot in that time), no one is perfect but practice helps
>>
>>15284781
I would have suggested a 650 twin, ala SV650, Ninja 650 etc.

Enough poke to keep you amused for a while but still learner friendly enough that anyone can ride one.

>I'm used to riding dirt bikes and shit, so I thought I'd be fine.

Does a dirtbike have twin 320mm discs on the front with six piston calipers on each?

Dirt and street riding are two different things. What you do on a streetbike won't always transfer to the dirt and vice versa. Best to learn on a bike that doesn't egg you on to go faster then put you on your ass when you panic and reef on the brakes.
>>
>>15284775
>>15284780
>>15284786
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll definitely be looking into the models mentioned
Power/speed isn't really a priority for me since most of the time I'll just be going from my apartment to campus which is a few miles in local roads (barely any highway).
The main reason I want a motorcycle is because I'm very limited by the places I can go with my bicycle, but I'd MUCH rather have a motorcycle than a scooter, and I can't afford a car and pay car insurance every month.
>>
>>15284786
kawasaki eliminator 250v is 35 horsepower, 170kg and perfectly capable of 160ish km/h, where is the problem?
that seems fairly reasonable for a cruiser, 1200cc harleys struggle to get over 160km/h
>>
>>15284801

Thanks, senpai. I live in the middle of nowhere, so there's plenty of dirt roads for me to practice on. I'll take your advice and practice braking on them.

>>15284799
>Dirt and street riding are two different things.

I realize this now. Wish I had known it before I gave into the dealership salesman trying to get me to get the more expensive bike. I guess I'm just a dumbass.
>>
>>15284809
I understand, but i'm buying one secondhand though and since it'll be my first vehicle ever, insurance and gasoline would not be in my budget for my shitbox car (Also parking is a huge bitch on campus. A huge bitch. Also not in the budget to buy parking passes or metered parking all the time)
>>
>>15284833
Everyone makes mistakes Anon, don't worry about it.

The thing to do now is recognise why what happened happened and learn from it.

Knowledge is power.
>>
>>15284799
Dirt skills certainly do transfer to road and vice versa, the only reason dirt bikes don't have 320mm discs is because they don't need them, you are still going to learn better brake control if you have none by practicing those skills on dirt first even if you are on a bike with twin 320mm calipers, it only starts getting complicated if you are going fast on dirt because dirt and road have complete opposite body positions.

My old man is a salt lake motorcycle racer who holds a number of world records and for big categories as well not obscure shit. National geographic wants to do a documentary on him and he told them his son will joining him next year as he sets a new world first and his son sets a world second.

I haven't ridden a dirt bike since I was a kid, don't have a bike license and now have until feb to prepare to do 150+ mph on the salt flats with a 60 year old bike and be in a documentary.

Anyone here with hands on experience with a SLR 650.

It's basically a stripped down Dommie, same engine, same everything. They're a bit cheaper than dommies, and newer.

Seems like a great platform to tinker with. A different exhaust, mikuni slide carb, make it breathe a bit easier, should be pushing 50hp. On a nice big single.

Only difference is that it's made by inept Spaniards, and thus supposedly sub-par quality.

CB250, not quite a cruiser but close enough, awesome bike to learn on, will do anything a cruiser would do, only better.

>gear brands
Really brand names are just brand names and there's a lot of personal choice and opinion around them without any real major differences in level of protection. An $800 Dianese jacket is just as good as an $800 A* jacket, both are better than a $200 jacket, and neither as good as a $1500 jacket. You get what you pay for, because the price is generally dictated by build quality and thickness of the material, not the brand name.
This doesn't apply to helmets. Most of the price difference in them is comfort and noise level. 5 star safety rating is 5 star safety rating whether the helmet costs $100 or $1000, but the $1000 helmet will be much more comfortable, lighter, and less wind noise.

>first bike + gear
First bike an '89 RG250 cost me $2000 and about another $1000 down on second hand gear. Have spent another $7-8k just on gear in the 8 years since my first bike, be warned lol. One piece suit, two piece suit, 2 winter (textile) jackets, leather jacket, waterproof touring pants, 6 kevlar pants, 2 pair summer gloves, 3 pair winter gloves, 5 helmets, 3 pair waterproof boots, race boots, kevlar liners for under non-protective pants, thermals, throw-over rain gear, the list just keeps going on and on. Only gets that bad if you're like me, living and breathing bikes all day every day. Probably only need 1 set of gear if you're a filthy casual.

>insurance
probably can't help you.. based on your use of the word "y'all" I assume you are in America and have it nice and easy. In upsidedownland Aus, insurance is about $4million annually and only idiots who crash their bikes get it, because if you're not dumb enough to crash your bike through your own fault, the idiot who caused it has to pay for damage so why would you spend the $4mil.

>anything I'd do differently

I know that there are some jackets that have pockets for them built in, but I was thinking about dropping one in the back of my mesh jacket either behind the foam back pad or in place of it. Anyone here do anything similar? Thoughts on the matter?

What are these kind of bikes really called?
With the street tires, looks like a dirt bike and people use for legal street use (headlights turn signals etc.) but could also go offroad if you wanted to.

Enduro, dual sport, motard, or supermoto?
I'm having a hard time trying to find the difference in these 4 terms..

>>15286948
your pic is a supermoto / motard (the same)
smaller wheels bigger brakes
for cornering and stunting and shit, mostly street, light offroad use
>dual sport
bikes that can do up to medium off road and also travel on road without too much pain
>enduro
bikes made for racing in the woods, serious race vehicles. sometimes also with road legal, but most of the time not really, mostly only have headlight and rear lights.

Overall it ended well for him though. He got his truck paid off, plus he got to buy his truck back and made at least another 5-8k on top by parting it out after he bought it back from the insurance company for 300 bucks.

That seems low, as its not a bike where you are meant to lean a lot like a cruiser or a sport.

I might just go for a dirtbike style, they seem larger.

You'll look like a giant on any 125cc anon.

On dualsports and bigger looking 125s like the Varadero, perhaps a bit more less so, but there's no escaping it.

I'd make peace with the that and get a CG125 anyway.

How does it look, /dbt/? Best price I've seen on a Ninja 300, gonna ask him for some more pics and info.
It is about a two hour drive from here. For a new rider (I took the MSF course, but not much more experience than that) is it better to try to haul it back in a truck or ride it back? It is four an a half hours back without going on the highway.

Yes, although it took so long to make competitive they ended up building a normal 2 stroke to race at the same time and eventually went with it instead

Oval cylinders, but that's to avoid the implication it's really a V8 in a 4 cylinder class.

Bike is NR500 anyways.
