I stopped preparing. After ESPN bought Speed Channel to kill it, the coverage has sucked worse and worse each year. I think we got 7 hours of coverage last year. I cancelled cable after that.

PS: Who Kamui Kobayashi here? Never liked TTE much but he's one of my favourite active drivers. Rooting for either him or Webber, although Lotterer may win my heart back for Audi if he pulls some overtaking shit like he did in 2011 (anybody got the .gif of him overtaking the 908 and the 'Vette coming to the Ford chicane?)

>>15268690
I'm not working on 488s, I'm with a P2
They brought a couple of engines per car I think.
The usual routine for pretty much everyone here is to use free practice as a break in for the race engine and other wear components, then change engine for the Thursday qualifying, then racing with the first engine again and use the second as an emergency spare. It's either that or another combo of two or three engines.

Once the car is qualified you can't change engines anymore or you will be moved to the back of the grid (and engine changes during the race are forbidden), so it has to have serious problems before you choose to change the engine between quali and the race

Anyway I think they can make it to 24hrs unless they start eating debris like in Spa

There are two areas in the main paddock, the outer one where most of the hospitality buildings and the parc fermee are, and the inner one, where the pits and the access to the grandstands are. There is an even outer are where they built a small village with museums, bars and souvenirs shop and a bunch of car parkings.

You need a different pass to access the inner one than the outer one ( I suppose it costs more money).
You'll see when you get here, you can hide it Anywhere in these two areas, just not where the shops and bars are because that place is a clusterfuck.

>>15269130
P2s are infinitely easier to work on than GTs, once you remove the bodywork it's basically the same as a formula car. Closed cockpits are a bit more unfriendly to work on, but it's still nothing compared to GTs.
Generally tools are better, things are necessarily more precise, there is a lot of attention to details and the amount of electronics involved is absolutely insane, I don't even want to think about the amount of sensors and miles of cables a P1 probably has.
This is my fourth year with a P2.

>>15269204
They have been quicker than 458s for the whole season IIRC, they will probably get massive penalties from the BoP in the following races (probably even this one, I expect a smaller air restrictor or less fuel tank capacity)

>>
>>15269401
Having something break in practice is infintely better than having it break in race.

They drive the cars as they would on race to make sure it will actually hold up, especially since most of those are running new engines. Naturally shit does break, and they have time to find out why and fix it.
>>
>>15269359

>>15269395

It's funny how the total output of the current P1-H is that of the old Group C cars. But seriously as cool as Group C was, it had a number of issues. The current age of P1 Hybrids is just as, if not more exciting.

It gets opinionated, I find the quality of the racing itself on another level. How much the guys have to push themselves because the machinery is safe enough and reliable enough plus BoP makes it more about driver skill. Where back in the day the risk factor was what made it entertaining.

Nice try though, but seriously. Qualifying is going on, no one on /o/ really gives much of a fuck about racing unless it lets them say their favorite manufacture is better. This is why all the motorsport stuff is on /sp/ with little discuss of actual racing on /o/ itself.
>>
>>15270431
Cross member is part of the frame.
Motor mount towers are riveted to frame
V8' use one set of towers, i6 used another set.
Difference on 351 vs 390 is just motor mounts iirc.
Getting a set of towers from the junkyard is a bitch.
But luckily you can use any from 65-77 (or 79, I forget)
>>
>>15270442
yeah they always do even tho they lost WEC champ the last two years i think
>>
>>15270431
And ya, when I swapped my 300 for a 351 in my bronco I used my old i6 c6 because it was a fresh rebuild.
Torque converters are even the same.
You'll have plenty of room for exhaust- I run long tubes on my 66 with the 390 just because I can, but fox body shorty headers are everywhere and compact enough to fit into almost anything incase you have issues finding truck specific stuff.
But try to avoid custom towers, even though the factory's are a nightmare to get off the donor, its worth it in the end to have everything line up perfectly.

Those ugly headlights and fairings are actually part of a special aero pack that they are allowed to use at Le Mans (and to test it at Spa), they will go back to the more conventional look you saw at Silverstone from the next race onwards. Those front fairings are literally vertical.

It still looks butt ugly with that F1-like high nose, even without the aero pack

Porsche too ditched the usual 4-projector style of the previous races for those strange lights with a million LEDs and the purple tube in the middle (which makes an insane amount of light when you see it live), but they still look passable and the car as a whole still looks good.

Anyway, i'm tired as fuck so this is really the last post for me tonight.
Have a good night fellas

>>15271998
What are you referring to exactly? P1s have pretty much the same fuel flow meters as F1 (those things that are used by the marshals to check how much fuel the car is actually using compared to the allowance) and the energy recovery systems are very similar as I've been told.
Generally the tech is somewhat similar, those cars are basically F1 cars with better aero and more robust hardware.

Also good morning everyone, another long day awaits us today

12 to 15 hours usually, but here in le mans we are going for 18-20hour days because of these night qualifying and the lot of things to prepare during the day.
It mostly depends on when they schedule track sessions, on unlucky days you can have like one free practice early in the morning and one at dinner time so you are forced to get up early and leave late in the evening.

This is also the reason why the 24hour race is actually a ~40hour job, they force teams to do 45mins of fucking warm up laps at 9AM, because apparently the 10 hours of practice+quali aren't enough.

There is a lot of downtime with nothing to do though, but sleep deprivation is the norm here.

>>15274667
At least 5 mechanics per car, one refueler (plus two extras for the dead mam switch and the extinguisher), one or two tire guys, 2-5 engineers (plus the engine technicians which are supplied by the engine manufacturer), maybe an expert in composites for on site repairs and at least a couple of extras for whoever needs help. And I'm not counting all the people not directly involved with cars like truck drivers, cooks, various managers and driver assistants.
GT teams may have a little less people involved, then you have P1s where you can easily count them in the hundreds.

Anyway, i was a regular mechanic for 5 years before going for the tracks, it helps but it's not really necessary (lots of race mechanics I know have no idea how to change a timing belt or how to diagnose common problems for example, yet they are proficient race mechanics). Track experience, even if short or limited, always trumps street car experience.
About how to get into it, check the archives for the last race mechanics thread (I made one after Silverstone IIRC), I posted a lot of useful info about getting into Motorsport there, give it a look.
>>
>>15274850
>12 to 15 hours usually, but here in le mans we are going for 18-20hour days
Fucking hell, I kinda expected 10-12 to be the norm but that's nuts. What do you do when it's not a race weekend, go to briefings about the car and help with packing things for the next race?
>>
>>15274888
Usually the first day is for setting up most of the garage, the next two days are for setting up the details of the garage and doing the car, then there are the track sessions the next days and, usually, by the end of Monday everything is already packed up in the trucks/containers/decks ready to go home or the next track by truck/ship/plane.
Add one or two more day for traveling when we need to go outside of Europe for the second half of the championship.

This championship actually takes a lot of preparation because there are so many things to bring with you for a world class event, sprint races and minor events take a lot less effort.
I also work for a formula4 team and it takes four days from when the trucks park to when they leave on those events, and we rarely work for 12hours on the busiest days. It's basically a vacation compared to the WEC

I was just discussing this with a friend of mine last night. Non-Hybrid P1s cannot compete at all, and if they are allowed more power then manufacturers won't be too happy about other cars being faster while having a 1/10th of the development cost.

DRS seems like a nice solution, especially since the non-hybrids don't fall back too far behind on straights, this gives them a clear advantage that they can use to counteract the rest of the weaknesses.
>>
>>15275507
I guess it comes down to the implementation on when they can deploy DRS and how DRS benefits the cars on tracks other than Spa or Le Mans

Here (an in many other teams for GTs and P2s alike) the relationships are pretty relaxed.
Of course there is a hierarchy, the engineers (along with team managers, technical directors, etc) are the ones that give orders, but they don't keep rubbing it in your face and sometimes they are even open to suggestions, which is a rare feature to be found in race engineers.
As with every place where you need to work with many people, there are bros and assholes, but that's inevitable.

I can only assume about P1s, but, considering the amount of engineers they have, there is probably a stronger hierarchy there if only for the fact that you can't establish real relationships with every single one of them, even between engineers there is a distinct hierarchy. There are also probably strong political reasons behind every decision. Here the main decisions come from the race engineers and the only "political" issue is to deal with whoever is paying for the car, P1s have manufacturers behind and some decisions may come from a lot higher than the race engineer.

If it's anything like F1 (I work with a bunch of ex F1 mechanics who told me a bit how things work in there), the mechanics are more like workers from a factory, mindlessly following orders with little to no interaction with engineers outside of the work environment.

I can say I'm pretty lucky with my engineers, they are all easy to talk with and don't try to block every outside opinion on the fact that they have a degree and others don't.

Tonight, when leaving for the hotel, I went through the camping area with the car because the main entrance was clogged with traffic and every tourist I saw was already shitfaced beyond recognition, then there are the improvised drag contests on side roads, drift cars going hektik on roundabouts, people grilling like it's the last thing they do, people dressed in all sorts of costumes, tents and RVs as far as eyes can see.
I guess only the Nurburgring 24h can beat the atmosphere of this place.

So how is it that Le Mans officials come out a day before the race and tell Ford and Ferrari to nerf their vehicles because the others aren't fast enough?
>>
>>15283085
Ford and Ferrari were driving slower on purpose (sandbagging) just so they could dominate lemans and gain exposure and the achievement of winning lemans.

ACO called them out on that shit and put them in their place.
>>
>>15283338
Oh that wasn't in the article I read.
>>
>>15283351
sandbagging is a serious issue in racing, specifically Endurance racing. Although it happens also in F1 (see preseason testing mercedes times for the past 3 years), in endurance there are tons of ways to hide your car's advantages. (fuel economy, actual HP output, aero, weight, hybrid in p1s, etc.)

The only bad thing about this is the nerf was implemented only one day before the race, which is pretty harsh, and even then we don't know if it will be effective enough, but the ACO had no way of knowing they were sandbagging. they had to wait for day quali results to act.

Because the only reason they were faster is they nerfed Corvette in the first place, and went too far.

I'm literally in the same boat. Except it's my first bike, Ninja 250r, and I have no idea where the fuck Anglesey is.

Because le mans is such a big event and is worth the amount of points you can get from the past two races combined, most teams just underperform at both Spa/Silverstone and in the pre-Le Mans test. The Le Mans BoP only applies to Le Mans I think but for the reasons stated before,it's worth too much.

Yes, they call it balance of performance adjustments. Those 'adjustments' usually involve adding or taking away fuel tank capacity, changing the size of the air restrictor (adding or taking away engine power), and adding or removing weight balast.

They're there to essentially for two reasons. One is to ensure that there's a reasonable performance differential between the classes, so that the faster classes can get around the lower classes in a reasonable manner. Getting through traffic is paramount in endurance racing, obviously.

The other reason is to assure manufacturers that if they spend the millions of dollars to build a race car program, they'll have a fair shot if their car isn't a pile of dog shit. It's unfortunate, but its ultimately because of cars we have now in GT3 and GTE.
>>
>>15281118
You're not wrong.

BOP is retarded. It's all sand bagging and politics.

But, without a spec series or a tightly controlled list of engines BOP is pretty much necessary to keep teams interested, keep the racing interesting, and to keep spending down.

see: F1, no BOP and generally boring.

>>15284549
Thanks, the weird adjustment to me was limited the GTs boost from 4200-7000RPM, but leaving the top end unchanged. That just seems like an extremely unusual ruling, though I don't have much experience with LeMans or their history of BOP with turbo engines.
>>
New thread with stream links for the race, please?
>>
>>15284720
Probably so they can't use extra low gearing for the long ass straights but still have gobs of torque to pull the lower gearing in the tight sections.

This doesn't hurt their peak power output, but forces them to prioritize between tight and open sections of the track.

That's my guess.
>>
>>15270183
>Is there a thread on /sp/ yet?

They had a few hype threads + talk of it in the weekly motor/sp/ort thread, but don't except to have "The Le Mans" thread until the actual race itself starts happening and getting some live-streams going.
