Wrecked oilpan, I was way too stupid and drove too fast through a dirt road that was deceptively steep.

It only sounded a little harder than a normal scrape, but I still decided to turn off the car and check it out for some reason, when I looked underneath the oil was pouring out. Thankfully there was no damage to the rest of the engine.

if you look closely, you can tell it was fucked from the second it was molded
shrinkage cracks, and highly porous appearance(looks like molded polystyrene because the metal started to cool too much before it even got into the mold leaving little chunks of granules of cooled oxidized metal bonded together with metal that was still liquid enough to fill the void between the grains), it should've never made it past QC, but it looks like it did

no idea about that specific image, but metal casting especially aluminum is a massive pain in the ass, and if the machines aren't dialed in, you get shit like that, and if the QC inspector doesn't know what they are looking for we get the shit end of the stick

i pulled my car out of storage of 2 years because i desperately needed a car to get around for job interviews and my primary is at the transmission shop

After a week it started developing a lifter tick from 2 year old thick sludgy oil. I still need to get around, stores are closed from public holiday today and im driving with a bad lifter tick

how much longer can i drive for until this becomes a major problem? i want to do it asap but i have no time

it had 25-65 in it, but when i do my oil change should i go back to 20-50?

Not really gore, but I had bought an intake for my old inline 6 from a swap meet. The intake is supposed to have 2 holes in the bottom of it for a water jacket in the intake to keep fuel from condensating inside. Noticed they were plugged at the show. No, no they don't, they have reduced levels as of years ago. You're only safe using a zinc additive.

During break in, it is crucial to use break in additives or oil, afterwards you can run conventional oil but the zinc and phosphorus will help slow down that wear and tear.

>do not use synthetic oil for break in or first 500 miles on flat tappet cams (see engine/cam break in instructions incase otherwise stated)

>do some research on ZDDP content of additives

>personally i use about a quarter of a bottle of Lucas Break In Oil on a fresh 350, no issues after 5500 and counting abused miles

Used comp cams break-in oil while breaking it in. Changed the oil immediately afterwards to a conventional and added a break-in/zinc additive. Then we changed the oil again after driving it for 50 miles with convetional and the additive. So far no weird noises. Only problem we're having now is it overheating. With the small radiator we have in the truck, it isn't able to keep the engine cool while sitting in traffic. We're about to add a second radiator under the bed of the truck to see if that solves the problem.

Materials Science Engineer here. There is a process called lost foam casting (look up lost wax casting for comparable process). That surface texture could be a result of this process.

However, I didn't think any manufacturers used the process as it is still fairly expensive. Most engine casting is done in sand molds.

I agree with the guy who said this should never have made it past QC. That grain structure and crystallization is ridiculous. This shit was just waiting to break in a dramatic fashion.

Funny story actually. I'm a Tow op, and I had to roll a car like that once that sat on its roof for a good hour or two before I was called. In situations like this the fire department never bothers to disconnect the battery because its a write off anyway, but buddy was insisting it was fine.

So I roll it over, and one of the fire fighters I'm friends with comes over to chat. Suddenly we both hear a starter go. Buddy that owns the car tried to fucking start it. Suffice to say, the loud bang as the pistons all bent themselves to shit was pretty great.

The best part was he still insisted it was fine and just needed to sit, so he had me tow it back to his house. Then the next morning he called and complained that I broke his car because it wont start anymore.

No reason to switch to discs in the back. Big drums back then were just as powerful as most OEM discs. If you really need more braking power in the rear you can use drums from wagons and fullsize sedans, Ford had drums up to 11x2.75 which is way more power than you can use on a 3500lb car on the rear. Discs in the front are nice though.

the drums didn't catch fire, the rubber did. the drums were glowing red hot. and like the other guy said, drum brakes are preferable in the rear due to the way the axles are set up (rear ends will essentially push disc brakes apart off the rotor and cause loss of brake pressure)

A good bodyshop can repair the damage. But that whole panel is going to need to be cut out and another one welded in because its too creased and ripped to be beaten back into shape.
But before that, most of the interior will need to be disassembled to prevent it from catching on fire. Then the whole side of the car will need to be prepped for paint and sprayed because if you blend a repair, the clear coat will eventually fail.
Thats at least 4days days of work to fix the body damage alone and a cost of at least €1000 including materials and labor. The insurance will likely give the owner a sum and let him keep the car.

He can either sell the car and buy a replacement, or use the money to fix it.

If he knows a good 'local bodyshop' if you know what I mean, he can get a good deal on the repair and actually keep some of the insurance money.

They'd have to cut out every layer of that quarter panel and weld it back in, then body fill it, paint it, and buff it. That would cost too much in hours, don't know how much it would cost in parts. It depends.

Costs too much = totaled = just get a new one. Simple.

Do some research, just because your honda doesn't need zinc doesn't mean that doesn't stand true for the older motors. EPA guidelines mandated lower levels of ZDDP and Phosphorus in modern oils, old flat tappet's don't like that. Don't believe me? Then why is it break in oil is used by any reputable engine builders of flat tappet cams in situations where race regulations, or customer budget, don't allow for hydraulic lifters? People have sent off oil samples from fresh off the factory floor Corvettes to see upwards of 5000 PPM ZDDP content in their oil. Modern oils can see as low as 500 PPM, a break in on flat tappets should be using oil between 2400-2800 PPM ZDDP, some people go as high as 5000 PPM.

Hell, go look at crate motors with flat tappets, every single break in manual recommends the use of break in oils, and every break in oil, has higher ZDDP and phosphorus levels than any off the shelf oil.

>Rotella / Diesel oil meme

ZDDP and Phosphorus among other additives in diesel oil has been on decline since mid/late 90's.

>VR1 racing oil and others similar

Also seen decreased levels, multiple online sources of people emailing companies about their ZDDP/Phosphorus contents receiving emails back stating the actual content in PPM.

I've broken in countless motors, and never wiped a lobe or dished a lifter on a flat tappet, I've always stuck to using break in lubricants or oils depending on the situation, run the motors 2200-3200 RPM varying for 30 minutes before letting them cool, change the oil, check the oil filter, valves etc; and changing the oil, again using break in additives/oils and broken in for the next 800 miles.

Nah m8 yer fucked. Thick oil like that doesn't flow for shit especially when cold and on startup, essentially starving the engine of proper lubricants. Kek.

I replaced the radiator on my 94 Formula a month ago because it split down the middle. Good ol stock rad. I replaced it, flushed the engine block and put fresh brand new clean coolant in it. She ran so cool... Then the waterpump pisses itself not a week later, killing my optispark and making me drain all my fresh coolant out.

Owell. I'm replacing the waterpump with an electric one, here's hoping changing the optispark out gives her the pep she once used to have.

Yours must be a 93 or early 94. Yours has the non-vented optispark which are prone to dying faster than the vented. :c
Mine has been fine up until I changed the clutch a few weeks ago. Maybe I screwed a wire up somewhere while changing it? Just yesterday while I was starting from a redlight,
>press gas
>use clutch to start moving car like normal
>release clutch pedal and begin to press gas harder
>reach a point in the gas pedal where the engine just dies, almost like I'm just hitting a kill switch
After about 5 seconds of it trying to die and trying to get the car moving, it just fixes itself and runs fine the rest of the day.
>>
>>15262396
Desu you should have picked them all up and scrapped them. Fuck that guy. Brass is like $2 per pound
>>
>>15262546
Yup, mine's the non vented. Gotta love that 94 year. Sounds like you had a little moisture in the cap from something. But it should be fine since you have the vented one (I assume). Damn things though.

Makes me want to do a 24x conversion but the kit is like $1500.

MSD makes a full replacement distributor for the optispark that has their own type of sensor inside it. No idea if they're any more reliable though.

Too much traction for the suspension. It's called wheel or axle hop. Basically the tires jumping off of the road due to too much traction causing an incorrect toe (& pinion) angle.
It's way easier to do with leaf springs, as the force of the axle pushing forward can "wrap" the spring and cause stress on the rear pinion u joint, which can lock given enough angle.
Effectively, when the rear tires grip well enough, the rear axle pushes forward, which makes it rotate, changing the toe, which then rebounds back and forth until either you let off, the u-bolts have had enough, or any other kind of massive drive-axle failure.

in other words, the axle's putting down so much power it literally rips itself off the frame?

neat.
>>
>>15263446
Pretty much. The only real cure at that point is to put a traction bar on to hold the axle in place so it doesn't move forward of backward in the wheelwell.

It came apart because someone converted the car over to a 4 link and did shit welds with shit fab skills.
Axle hop doesn't help but if everything is built properly it will handle it. Leafs are susceptible to wheel hop yes, but you'll never see this happen to a leaf spring car unless it was rusted to fuck.

>>
>>15264725
I disagree. You can have axle hop in a brand new, rust free car, as long as you have too much traction (& torque) for the suspension. It happens in brand new, regeared diesel trucks just due to the sheer torque twisting the axles
