just bought dirt: rally to check it out after playing RBR for a while. gotta say that the cars are a lot more grippy than in the latter. handbraking and cutting corners are trickier than the it usually is here. don't know if it's more natural this way or not but cars behave differently than in RBR.

Novelty and good timing.
Once people realized the skill gap in /ovg/ is about as wide as the Atlantic Ocean, a lot of people who would be considered shitters simply stopped racing. The aliens stopped racing because they got bored with small grids and the same people shitting up the track.

Now we keep trying to start race series but not enough people are active because obviously they have life shit to take care of, the times are being experimented with, and hell, not everybody's got RF2.


Frankly, the experience that was OVGT3 S1 is very special and while we should certainly attempt to achieve that again, it's not necessary to hold ourselves to such a high standard every weekend.

The game is miles better now than when it was released.

For example, the devs reworked the PVP system completely, added a voting system and a couple of divergent gametypes.
The motorcycles that came out with Wild Run just got a physics update that makes them more challenging and fun to drive.
There's now a photo mode that allows export of resolutions up to 4k.

it's so fucking comfy, I only wish it were possible to crew up with more than 4 players.

Automoblista and gsce are meh, the physics on the content have big short cuts done when it comes to suspension. Not game breaking, but once you push the car you notice. but it looks nice and there is alot of it. Tracks are pretty good.

Rfactor 2 is the newer sim that most here enjoy. Has alot of cool features, looks okay and physics engine is good.

pretty much this. it wasn't that the mod or the tracks or the organisers were better, but for someone who hadn't taken part in any kind of organised racing league before it was just quite exciting to log into the server every saturday and race against 40 like-minded autists from across the world. the novelty had to wear off eventually but there might be enough new people around now to reignite interest in a "main" series.

pCARS is a buggy mess that purports to be a hardcore racer, but is rather arcadey. It has skins but no custom cars or tracks. It has a few physics glitches and bad implementation of simulation elements.

AC has a shit ton of custom content, skins, cars and tracks, but no real individual customization of vehicles (unless you count tuning, which is not as good as rFactor). Physics are great, not wholly autismo-accurate, but good enough to qualify as a simulator. It probably has the largest community.

The Crew is not a simulator by any means, but does have very enjoyable physics that are not at all casual, especially if you switch the driver aids to Hardcore mode. Even then, it's got a casual feel to it, since the vast majority of your in-game time is spent tooling around in your favorite car. The comfy level goes off the charts real fast when you hop in a Raid car and go bombing across the desert.
It has pretty good customization, though not all vehicles can be customized to the same degree -- Cadillac apparently has a problem with stickers, thus the Escalade cannot equip any of them, but you can have a Ferrari in any color you like, with flames or tribal tats or Japanese woodblock prints or Sam Fisher.
The community isn't huge, there are a lot of people who would otherwise be playing the game if they were at all competent at running their own computer (the steam page features some rather stupid negative reviews), but the problem is the console-style connectivity: there might be 5000 players on at any given time, but you will only see around 8-10 of them, less if you have a full crew, and almost none if you have a bad internet connection.

Should also point out that the casual feel of The Crew is also reinforced by the simple SP mission structure, which presents missions that are usually way too easy, the AI is usually overwhelmed by traffic patterns when around the player and spends most of its time crashing and spending way too long trying to get back on track. You can swerve towards them to spook them into obstacles, and they usually present no challenge, except in MP faction missions.

It seems that traffic only spawns in a certain radius around the player. If the AI falls far enough behind, they will exit the radius of traffic and be free to draft each-other, attaining extremely high speed in order to catch up with the player.

If you are the last-position human player in a crew racing a faction mission and you fall more than a mile behind the leaders, the AI will try to boost itself up to the top 3, blowing your doors off in the process. If you're really far behind, this creates a gap between your radius of traffic and that of the other players where the AI sits until the end of the race, not facing traffic, too fast and efficient at drafting for you to catch up to without a track cut or long technical section (which the AI are worthless in).

I just tried to beat same stage with every car and i'm getting very close times with Escort and Impreza. 037 is terible for Finland (almost -10s to other cars) and i doubt anyone will use it, but then again feel free to do it if you want. RWD is fun.
