I was anxious and in a rush to get a bike after a guy couldnt meet in my timeframe the day I got my bike license. Looked in my town's newspaper - #2 was the only bike in my budget ($2000) so I went and bought it not really knowing much on bikes at the time. Ended up not being a terrible deal. Learned on it for a couple months, sold it for $2200. Just had done an oil change and gave new owner a new set of sprockets and a new chain i had bought but not installed.

4 and 5 were different bikes. Both 08 zzr600s in the same color.

I sold the first one with the intention of buying an FZ6. Then the guy sold it the day before I was going to get it. I had sold mine for $4000 (bought for $3400). Then I saw #5 for sale with only 900 miles for $3600. Bought it for $3400 as well. I sold it for $5000 after putting 2000 miles on it.

#6 is an 07 zx6r I bought the day after for $5000 with only 1.1k miles. 2nd day I owned it a dude pulled out in front of me and wrecked me. Not much damage but insurance totaled it and gave me $7300 based off market value due to low miles.
#8 is an 07 ZX10r I got for $6000 with 1500 miles.

So all different bikes.

I'm waiting for the cost assessment, they should have given me it last week, but didn't get it. After calling them Thursday it turned out there were waiting from a damage expert from the insurance, which will never come as this isn't insured. Should know how much damage it actually has on Monday.

do you think the ZX6 is as much fun? I love the face, but I'd have to restrict it to 48hp anyways so there's no need for more cc
>>
>>15249884
doesn't restricting it keeps the torque from the extra cc?
>>
>>15249884
talking about the 07? i didnt own that long enough to know.

The zzr600 though (00-02 zx6r) I'd say was even more comfortable than the zx9r because of the smaller tank. Otherwise similar bikes for ergonomics. Comfortable riding position and still plenty of power and light enough to really toss around. I owe my zzr's with really giving me the best learning experiences getting into bikes.

>>
>>15249903
yeah my two zzr 600's are just rebadged 00-02 zx6r's.

Fantastic bikes. The late 90's/early 2000's ninjas are some of my favorite bikes. Comfortable, good power, fairly simple/reliable. Then for some reason (many don't agree with me) I just love the styling. Especially the bug faces.

You won't be disappointed with a zx6r from that era.
>>
I was thinking, does anybody know why people own Japanese cruiser type motorcycles? Who buys these things? What is the purpose of a cruiser? Why do they make them so heavy and slow and limited in capabilities? Of all categories of motorcycle, they seem to fulfill no role another style doesn't do better.

I kinda get a HD or Victory because M'urrica and no other style of motorcycle is produced in the USA for whatever reason, but why a Japanese cruiser?
>>
>>15249903
afaik restricting usually limits the rpm and liter bikes have quite more torque down than 600, so even restricting it you'll benefit from the extra cc

nah
>>
>>15249914
Jap cruisers are usually cheaper and more reliable than their American counterparts.

Cruisers are mostly about image and the idea of cruising to your destination.

They don't need to be fast, they don't need to be light because it's counter-productive to the end goal.

There are more comfortable bikes, there are bikes that corner better, make more power and torque etc. than a cruiser, and that's fine.

Cruisers would be the floaty soft-sprung convertible with bench seats and classic styling of the motorcycle world.

Say you're about to crash into left-turning car. Besides braking, is there anything you could theoretically do to lessen then injuries you'd recieve? Would it make sense to stand up on the pegs before you impact, being thrown over the car be better than being thrown into it? Maybe peggs back against the pegs to scoot your ass under the rear wheel so you get thrown in a high arc?

Any other technique? I know people like to lock the brakes and low-side into cars but I dunno if that's a good idea either.

Been watching motorcycles crash on Youtube and wondering about the physics.

also
>there should have been a minor penalty for running marc wide
why? that's racing.. when you have the line that's how you stop people from over undering you or getting a run on the outside.

the last thing FIA needs is more "penalties" for racers racing.

FIA and IMSA really need to take a page from the AMA motorcross and BTCC and let racers race and stop penalizing people for every little bit of confrontation or contact.

>>15250142
even in your webm you can see marc make contact before 'kicking'. his foot slipped off because of the contact.

>>15250143
well yes you're right he knew marc was there, but not exactly where. in both races they were battling and you can hear the other riders, so yes he was aware marc was there. but marc honestly tries to fit in places where there is no room a lot. it makes for good racing, but it is dangerous, and he has been reprimanded in the past.
i think assen is cut and dry and not worth discussing. but malaysia is harder to determine. i'm staying out of the 'marc sabatoging vale' argument, but personally i think on that corner, vale did run marc wide (which you can be penalized for), but i think marc made contact, and rossis foot slipped. believe what you want.

>>15250149
>why? that's racing
not quite. you pass people, but you don't fuck up others intentionally. and the penalties are useless as it is. ask lorenzo. ianonne is unintentionally sabotaging peoples entire season.
>>
>>15250159
I don't really like to argue with retards so I won't, but the idea of marc "making contact" is just bizarre considering he's being ran off the track at the time, it's either turn in, or just let somebody run you off into the gravel but people like to act as though marc was an agressor who made first contact by actually attempting to take the corner.

I know you've been watching motogp for like a year but already know you're a "rossi fan 4 lyfe" but there's no need to distort reality in order to ensure he's always correct.

He can still be your favourite rider and do stuff wrong every now and then, nobody's infallible.

Yes you do. If I have the line and someone is trying to pass me on the outside I'm going to slow way down and hang them out all the way into the marbles. Similarly if they show their nose on the inside when I clearly have the line I'm going to close the door on them without even hesitating and they'll think twice before trying to be cheeky again.

That's the difference between a time trial and racing and that's why he wasn't penalized either time. They go back and forth fucking with each other so that no one has an advantage which is why lap times suffer massively when people are battling for position.

I'm also curious about best practice for completely unavoidable things (or things which you cannot at that point avoid; some argue that all accidents are avoidable but that's not the question).

In a car, it's basically make sure none of your limbs will be snapping in half during a sudden stop (arms not braced forward against the wheel, feet where they should be etc).

What do on a bike?

Also interested. Depending on what you're landing on, how, at what angle and at what speed, getting thrown over the car could be safer if there's only, say, open tarmac on the other side. If you hit something solid that's smaller, sharper or harder than a car, the injuries could be way worse, though.

low side into it, or if you're going too fast for that jump off the pegs over the hood/roof line as the bike hits.
I mean you're gonna get hurt either way, but if I'm going fast I'd rather fly through the air and hit the ground at an angle rather than being embedded in the side of a car, much less inertia that way.
>>
Alright, /dbt/, I take my msf course next weekend. Help me decide on my first bike. I'm looking mostly at naked bikes and more or less narrowed it down to the following

Used/new sv650
New fz07
Used street triple

Mechanically inclined/lots of experience working on cars and confident I can fix just about anything I fuck up. Not much riding experience aside from borrowing a friend's shadow 600 for a couple days while my car was down, but was able to jump on it with no real problems. Also rode the same friend's girlfriend's ninja 250 around town a bit. My loins yearn for a street triple the most of those three, but know it's not exactly a suggested beginner bike.

Other 'honorable mentions,' but I know the last 3 are farthest from being ideal starters

>older monsters
don't know how much I wanna deal with air cooling with occasional trips in downtown traffic
>shiver
far and few between but they're relatively cheap when they do go up on craigslist and whatnot
>cb500f
Least favorite of everything, but cheap and probably one of the smarter choices for a first bike
>fz6
roughly same price and availability as sv650s around here
>gsx-s750
dealerships are dumping them cheap to make room for the new sv650s
>speed triple
What I want the most of everything, but probably a bad idea. Cheaper and more available than street triples though.

That's not an appropriate first bike.

Your first bike isn't your last, don't feel like you have to buy some super dooper mega bike that'll last you a million years and that you won't get bored of ever.

Chances are you'll learn what you do and don't want/like in a bike from your first and you'll probably want something completely different next.

Like I said
>probably a bad idea

Street triple is probably second highest on wants but I know it's on the far edge of beginner ability at best. I do feel like I know myself well enough to know that when I'm not at least slightly afraid of something is when I'm most at risk to do something stupid. The only reason I'm still considering a street triple is because I feel like that 'fear' of pushing it won't wane for a long while, and I'm not gonna be able to take it out to places where I would be able to be stupid until next spring at earliest. Track days aside. The closest real twisties means daytrip at minimum and that usually means friends wanna go, and I don't trust their driving in the mountains so I usually drive

It's still gonna be 90% commuter even when I do have the skills to complement the bike's abilities

All that said, I'll still most likely stick with an fz/sv as a safer choice

>>15250431
It's not so much what you think you might do that will catch you out on a proper bike like a Speed Triple (or any 600+cc sportbike etc), it's what you do on instinct that will be your demise.

You're not going to think twice about the brakes being strong as fuck and that you should go easy on them when you're grabbing for them because someone ran a red light in front of you, for instance.

Then suddenly you're over the bars with the bike following you or you've lost the front end and she's sliding on her side down the road while you watch on helplessly.

Find yourself a decent 650 twin like the SV, ER-6n, Ninja 650 etc and put a decent amount of mileage on it before you go chasing after a Speed Triple imo.

Isn't whole panic and take a fist full of brake/whiskey throttling and looping/etc a danger for new riders on most modern sportyish bikes?

Not trying to sound like one of those 'imma start on a turbobusa wid a 15 foot extented swingarm, its k bruh i no wut im doin cuz i rased muh moms impawla,' or 'i just watched twist of the wrist, I know everything now,' or 'I'm different from everyone else' guys who wants to start on race replicas. Just kinda figured the whole argument of not starting on too much of a bike was due to a combination of unforgiving suspension, unforgiving power bands and speed capabilites, and a new rider's shit reactions at those things along with weight, poor riding style, 'odd' ergonomics, etc at their extremes.

Sv650/fz07 are already my top choice regardless, personally not a big fan of the ninjas looks

>Isn't whole panic and take a fist full of brake/whiskey throttling and looping/etc a danger for new riders on most modern sportyish bikes?

Of course, but the brakes on a learner bike are way more forgiving than the brakes on a litrebike, for instance.

You can do one finger stoppies on a 600 supersport, now think about what a whole hand will do.

You can get away with small mistakes on a more forgiving bike but a proper bike expects you to know what you're doing and responds accordingly.

That's the thing. The logos are fucking huge in that jacket. Covering the tiny ones in elbows and shoulders wont make any difference.
>>
>>15250675
Logos and brand names are normally another layer of leather stitched on, a seamstress or leather repair shop would most likely remove them for a fee. You'd be shit out of luck of they're dyed in though.

The logos I wish to cover are on the plastic covers on the should & elbow pads, not the ones on the leather, I don't mind those.

I understand that, I'm not trying to imply the brakes are even close on a ninja 250 vs an r1

What I'm saying though is that a new rider who would panic brake and launch themselves off a high end middleweight bike like an fz09/stripple/gsx-s/etc would be just as likely to panic brake and launch themselves off a low end middleweight like an sv650/fz07/ninja 650/cbr650/etc in the same situation

Too much brake in a panic will lock the tires in either class unless they're an abs cuck

Timmelsjoch was an almost religous experience: I didn't encounter another person between the toll booth and the end of the snowline on the Italian side. I'd definitely recommend to anyone in the area going there as soon as it opens at 0700 on a Sunday.

I really enjoyed it.
Decently comfortable for what it was. Got great mileage. I think the first gen R1's and R6's are the best looking of all the generations as well.

But great breaking, power is a stereotypical 600 - a dog down low but past 10k it starts to open up and pulls decent. To me the bike still was pretty slow compared to what I've had. I only bought it because I was bikeless at the time with no real plans to buy a bike but it only had 9k miles and was mint and a buddy offered it to me for $2000. I figured fuck it, fall semester was about to start and I loved having a bike to ride to class for the awesome motorcycle parking.

I bought way too much. I have 115l of storage and about half of that is camera gear, everything from a handheld gyro for the GoPro (and 11 batteries) to a Sony AX53 4K handycam (with 3 spare batteries), plus 320GB of miroSD cards and all the associated chargers, hard drives and a netbook for dumping content. I also have both waterproof and vented protective jackets and trousers (though the jackets share a D3O back protector). I also have the usual toiletries and a week's worth of clean clothes.

Finally, there's emergency rations: 5 bags of pork scratchings, a kilo of roasted peanuts and 2l of iced tea.

how are you liking it for road handling? it pretty happy to cruise at 80mph and handle hard riding good?
im on the fence about getting one or the vstrom 1000. the offroad capability is a huge perk for what i end up doing on the big bikes already.
>>
>>15251114
Yes. As long as you stay on the road and don't have any desires for stupid speeds it's probably the perfect all round bike. The only 'bad' thing about it is that good condition models are harder to find, assuming you mean the 750, not the 800, the downside with the 800 is that it's VTEC so every other service is hellishly expensive, it's best to buy a service plan.

I don't like tank bags because I can't lock them when I leave the bike unattended at a service station. I think I'll just leave the gyro at home next time, now that I have the camcorder with BOSS.

>>15251125
>how are you liking it for road handling?

It's absolutely top notch. Really composed but more nippy than a bike with that much ground clearance and tyre sizes has any business being.

> it pretty happy to cruise at 80mph and handle hard riding good?
It's pretty happy to cruise at 100mph fully laden, 80mph is totally relaxed. Beyond 110mph, you're watching the speedo slowly click up but up to that point, it's extremely capable even with luggage. My only complaint is that the suspension needs adjusting if you want to load it up and break 127mph but that seems fair enough and it really won't get much over 137mph unladen.

In Germany you have to take care for the power/weight. The A2 license allows a ratio of 0.2 meaning for every kW you gotta have 5 kg.
