Did you buy that 389 new?

I'm the anon that drives school buses, the other day we hired a guy that claimed he was fired from Schneider for doing an illegal u-turn. I got the usual "b-but I was a good boy dindu nuffin" speech but do they really fire 5 yr veteran drivers for that?
>>
>>15194755
I'm not with Schneider but with my company U-turns are also automatic firing offenses. We, and they, have drive cams that detect the U-turn and upload video of it so that's how you get caught.

Other automatic firing offenses are falling asleep while driving and speeding, even 1mph, in construction and school zones.

Hopefully your supers checked his DMV printout, at an old company I worked for we "hired" a guy who said he was "laid off" from 3 different environmental companies. Turns out he was using a really old printout for interviews and had 2 DUI's with a revoked license.

I got the impression he's a little slow in the head. He's also morbidly obese and missing most of his teeth. Pretty nice guy but he's kinda weird. They're having him do a route for now.

He told me he and his wife drove as a team. Supposedly no one else would hire them so I'm guessing they fucked up a lot worse than an illegal U-turn.
>>
>>15195121
Because DriveCam's have driver facing cameras. They trigger on G-force profiles. A rumble strip detection coupled with a jerk back triggers em every time. Last year we had two drivers fall asleep and wreck their trucks. One guy was only three hours in to his shift and the video showed him practically falling out of his seat to the right. He tried to claim he sneezed and that made him pass out. As if that's better to have in a driver somehow.

Yeah the way you attach them, how many quirky little ways are there? Do you have to do a little Irish jig and ring a bell each time you hook up the hose? Slam down a football? Take a shot of vinegar? Ice bucket?

Maybe "The Schneider Way" is just actually attaching them, and it's a dig on SWIFT. Sorry Whiney.

>>
What if you could link trucks like this?

truck, trailer, truck, trailer.

the truck in front does the steerring, and both trucks pull. The idea being that while one driver is driving, the other is sleeping. Then after 8-10 hours they stop and swap either drivers in trucks, or the trucks positions. Then the rested driver drives and the other sleeps.
>>
>>15196481
Yes

>>15196580
Many, many reasons why this would not work or be feasible. Team driving is already a thing, one person drives while the other sleeps in the back. You don't need the added expense of a whole other truck that isn't even driving, just extra weight being pulled along. The weight of that second truck would take away from the overall weight you're legally allowed to haul. Basically it wouldn't add anything to have an extra truck, and might actually take away from your overall productivity.

I have been trolled.

They are the best in class.
>>
>>15196481
Nope, you have fucked up now. It's a good company if you're gonna constantly be smashing into shit though.

Trailer got rejected at a shipper for having a tiny granule of glass/silicon in it after I swept it out. I don't even know how that got in there since we primarily carry boxed candy. I ain't waiting until Monday to get loaded that's for sure.

The point is that they'd both be hauling the load, but then you run into the 'why not a regular team driver' thing.

Personally, I see trucks being more powerful and hauling more trailers around. Especially for container haulage. Road train shit, especially if the USA just gives up and gives them a dedicated truck-only lane on interstates.

With hybrid/EV technology, you could even just unhook a trailer at the gate and guide it in on foot to unload it.

they take turns driving and sleeping. so neither truck has to stop for long. then when they get to their general area. they split and go their separate ways.

I'm not sure if swift has a safety bonus.. but if they do keep up the spotless record it'll be worth it.
I used to carry a backpack full of water bottles to refill on the road. I recently upgraded to a 4 gallon jug and a larger cooler. I'm liking the jug. Cooler hasn't "cooled" yet. Gonna check the wiring see if I don't have it reversed
I'd grab a little road master stove or one of the Coleman burners and a fridge for all those home made sandwiches, they don't keep all that well. And the largest inverter you can get without wiring it in.
After that saving shouldn't be a problem.
Expect to be out a month at a time easily.

The home cooked food will save you a ton of money, my trainer at my first job kept a Coleman 12-volt cooler (about $100-150) full of food from home for the week. If you're going with swift, you're in for a 50/50 toss up between being alright and getting totally shit on, ask Whiney. Words of advice: keep the driver door shut, don't sign for a lease-to-own agreement, and don't get on any of Swift's 'dedicated' groups or whatever they call them, you can ask Whiney about those.

Regarding what this anon has said about a power inverter - I bought a Tripp-Lite this week, haven't received it yet but I'll report back. Supposed to be 200 watts (laptop guzzles 171w, or if I want to play muh consoles it's like 125w for the Xbone and another 25w for a TV). Mind you, what you can pull from a 12-volt socket depends on the fuse for that socket. Most of the sockets in my truck are 10 Amps (12 volts * 10 amps = 120 watt, above that will blow the fuse), but I have two sockets that are 20 Amps (240 watts then).
>>
>>15198814

Now the barn door on this WalMart trailer is jammed, three of us tried closing it but nothing. So now I'm stuck with a -1 load that can't maintain temperature at their yard and their lumpers are gone for the night.

Hey guys, i have a problem with my "new" truck (pic related)
I cant get the optimized idle system to work and im not familiar with it. Is there a trick to this that im missing? Or is the system just not working?

Also, what is the black box on the left for?
>>
>>15208743
It literally has instructions right there. Have you tried following them?
>>
>>15208743
Muh Cascadia has the same system.
>Park
>Make sure both knobs are out
>Leave truck on, idling
>Flip gear range switch to high range
>Turn on cruise control
>'Idle Mgmt' light comes on
The truck will actually shut off like it usually does, but if the batteries hit 12.0v, it fires up and idles for 70 minutes to recharge them. Above 85 or below 20 degrees it will idle indefinitely, but that may be adjustable by the company, so yours may be different.
>>
>>15208743
Black box is Qualcomm controls. Supposed to let you use it while driving by listening to text to speech.
Optimized idle: turn the engine on. Flip the range selector on the gear shift up. Hit the cruise control on / off switch on the steering wheel. You should see an Opti idle light flashing. It will continue to flash until the truck goes into automatic shutdown. Once that happens the light should be lit solid. You should have some form of thermostat light control in the bunk use that to set the temperature you want, and the truck will turn on automatically to bring the temperature down or up to that point, depending on if you have it set to heat or AC. You still need to actually set your temperature and fans like you normally would while driving
>>
>>15208827
I wouldnt be asking if the instructions had worked.

>>15208862
Ok, that clears things up. I wasnt waiting for the engine to to shut off. Ill try that. Thanks.
>>
>>15208883
>black box
>qualcomm controls

I can disregard that thing then. Boss doesnt use qualcomm/gps location. Thanks.
>>
>>15207389
Only now did I realize there's a small sticker at the front of the trailer that says the door is pneumatically sealed. The door won't open or close without evacuating the air.

Is there a good reason for this? Seems like a convoluted system that serves no real purpose.
>>
>>15209006
Maybe safety so someone doesnt get crushed when closing the door?
>>
>>15209006
Door won't open or close while trailer has air.
So people that would be climbing into a trailer don't do it while the trailer brakes are released.
Safety.
>>
>>15209006
So the door doesn't fall on someone's head, basically.
And so people can't get trapped in/break into an unattended trailer.

Concussions are a perpetual hazard in retail work, and nobody seems to pay attention to the risk of them.
I've become a little paranoid about it this year after giving myself a serious one just before xmas. I nearly lost my job as a consequence of it, and it kinda woke me up to the dangers of being hit in the head by stuff.
It hurt for MONTHS, and nothing would stop it.

>>
>>15209899
Too many of our ass ends aquiring trees, fences, cars and fire hydrants
>>
>>15210598
I could see that, especially when they have the tandems slid way up. I get a lot of buses and straight trucks making left turns and u-turns and their rear bumpers slide into the other lane and I almost cream them. Retards.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the freight too. U-turns are an easy way to flip over some pallets. Especially if you have to accelerate kinda quick so you don't back up traffic. When the trailer finally straightens out, it can shake the stuff inside pretty gud.
>>
>>15209899
>What is the deal with U-turns?
Management is afraid of a driver pulling out in front of a car and blocking the whole road and the idjit in the car running under the trailer.
>>
>>15210701
I'm waiting for that to happen one day too. And it will be a distracted woman when it does too.

This happened like 2 years ago:
>coworker is making right turn into gas station
>corner of trailer is still in the road a little bit as he is pulling in
>dumb cunt hits the trailer without even slowing down
>basically shears off the whole passenger side of her car
>trailer has minor dents

Always women. Men can be shitty drivers too, but women just don't understand how tractor trailers work.

>>
>>15213436
Im going to talk to the boss. Theyre adopting some anti idle policy and the system they chose to use aparently doesnt work in my truck.
>>
>>15213440
I taled to the boss, he said this system isnt supposed to cycle the engine. But everything im seeing says it is, which means its not working. I guess im just going to ignore it and see whqt happens with the new anti-idle policy.
>>
>>15209236
I figured it would be some safety shit.

>>15213575
These anti-idling policies are ridiculous, we're already hundreds of miles from home but getting comfortable is a luxury the company can't afford us. I even saw another Swift driver with a portable air conditioner in his truck, the absolute madman.
>>
>>15213806
My take on anti-idling policies:
"Oh I can't idle? Well let me just plug in ten different goddamn things that guzzle electricity and drain the battery."
>Batteries are now ded
Dispatch: 'Why haven't you headed out yet?'
"Because I'm not allowed to idle, and my cooler for my food and my fan to keep me cool killed the batteries. If you'd let me idle, this wouldn't have happened."
Thankfully Roehl isn't stupid and has all of their trucks set up with auto-start/smart-idle and bunk heat+AC.
>>
>>15213955
Don't you guys run ice packs or some other auxiliary mounted engine?
>>
Im happy with Prime. All trucks have apu's. When the pieces of shit break down they'll let you stop and get them fixed. If it takes too long they'll even give you breakdown pay.
>>
>>15213806
Holy shit. Defecting to Roehl, when?
>>
>>15213968
Lots of trucks run on Auxiliary Power Units when parked, which sips a lot less fuel. Roehl opted for all-Electric Power Units, or basically like 8 goddamn batteries and the truck fires up when they get low.
>>
>>15214020
Crete did as well, but then it was decided those don't count for the APU weight limit exemptions.
It didn't help that they're a fucking maintenance nightmare.

So now we're back to straight optimized idling.

>>
>>15214247
The shipper's fucking with you because you're swift.
None of the real companies would stand for that shit. They'd tell them to fuck off and get just get another load. Personal example:
>working for England
>picking up produce
>sit on dock for six hours with no activity
>watch a bunch of cars leave
>find out they just fucking left for the day without loading me
>dispatch tells me to wait for them to come back
>it's Friday night
>they don't come back until monday
>dispatch doesn't want me to leave
>verify truck has no product
>fucking leave, get no other loads
>pickup on monday.
vs:
>working for Shaffer
>picking up some shit I don't remember
>customer dicks around for five hours, puts three pallets on
>explains they have to shut down for the night and will finish loading in the morning
>shaffer tells them to fuck off and get those three pallets off
>get 3 hours of detention pay
>plus $100 layover charged back to the shipper for ordered truck not used
>get another load
>>
>>15214415
Thry DID count.
They don't any more, at least some places we like to go.
Note the exemption is a DOT recommendation, it is up to the individual states to decide whether they'll give it.

I used to work for gainey. They sent me up to NJ one day. I spent 48 hours sitting in a bullpen waiting for them to load me. No food, no bathroom. Damn near ran out of diesel (it was cold up there)

Gainey wouldnt let me leave. The place im at now doesnt play around.

>scheduled 1600 pickup
>i pull in at 1545
>told "load bot ready come back tomorrow"
>dispatch says "come home"
>went home.

It was a good night.
>>
>>15214419
I called the broker and he was determined to get me off this load until they realized it was "high value" or whatever. It's just a bunch of baby formula and whey protein for /fit/.
Apparently they're so stringent because if anything gets damaged on a pallet, that whole pallet get rejected and the shipper has to buy back the product.

But apparently that doesn't matter with the rusted out intermodal truck that got docked before me.

Mostly just corporate stores. Walgreens, CVS, corporate Shells. 7-11's we normally have to work but I drop the 7-11's on my route. Saves me at least an hour on Tuesdays and Fridays. Corner stores and independent gas stations are normally drops.

I guess at the Palm Beach location just north of us, they have to merchandise pretty much every corner store and will work 12hr days for <400 cases. One of our guys lives 10min away from that plant and transferred there. Was back at our plant 6 months later because he would rather commute 45min each way but knock out 500-600 cases in 9hrs.
>>
>>15216676
And that's not a bad area for delivering. Where is your plant? At least your route isn't Cicero or some shit (assuming your plant is just for the west suburbs).

I have a nice ultra-suburban area right now. The days go so much smoother than when I would run closer to the beach or in the hood. And we don't touch Miami which helps. FL drivers are crazy enough, I'm happy to stay a few blocks north of Dade Co.

I came from a really poorly ran environmental company with assholes in charge, so I took extra care to find a job that is friendly to military and accepts that one weekend a month & all of July I will be off the radar playing spess muhreen. When I had my interview with a retired Corpsman as dispatch and a retired Gunny as the contract manager, plus working mostly on-base for fat DoD money I went all out. Yes, I do drive daycabs with tankers full of shit water and kitchen grease, but its worth it to have good upline and nice paychecks.

Im currently at CDL school with swift right now. They're waiving my tuition because I'm an ex navyfag but to do that i gotta work with them for 1 year which isnt too bad. Any tips veteran truckerfags?
>>
>>15219948
Veteran has nothing to do with it. That's their standard deal.
>>
>>15219948
That's only the first in the enormous sack of lies and bullshit you're about to find yourself in.
>>
>>15219948
You can quit at any time. They'll just bill you for the school charges. If they piss you off make them sue for it.

Don't join any dedicated account unless it has an acceptable guaranteed minimum. That way if you're not moving you still get some pay. Also absolutely do not accept any dedicated family dollar/dollar general type account. Those things are brutal and pay like shit.

Finally, Be. On. Time. Never less than an hour early for delivery appointments unless unavoidably delayed by prior shipper/receiver or traffic. Shippers are usually a bit more flexible.
>>
What do you truckerfags know about the mechanic scene in your industry? C.R. England offers a pretty awesome scholarship for diesel tech students at the local community college, and I'm definitely considering it. I just don't want to get stuck working for an ass company, because part of the deal is you have to work for them for two years or you owe the money back.
>>
>>15219948
What was your rate/MOS?

Get your CDL through either troops to trucks or by using your GI Bill to go to a standalone school. If you are already in too deep with Swift, get ready to suck it up and bite the pillow for a year of getting fucked. You should already be used to that anyways, Sailor ;^)

If they treat their mechanics anything like they treat their drivers, you'll hate yourself for signing on with CR England. Look into student loans or work placement scholarships. Even if you have to pay tuition back, I'm sure you'll at least break even getting a fair wage for two years somewhere else, and save yourself a lot of frustration in the process

Dunno which part of Canada you'll be driving in but prepare for the following:
>>active scales almost every 200 kms (120ish miles)
>>much more rigid inspections
>>muh border wait times (+1 hrs at worst)
>>muh 100kmph/62mph speed limits
>>foreigners (like myself)
>>minimal truck stops
>>muh customs invoices and entry #s
Apart from that, Ontario is pretty chill. Roads are smooth as a loli's bottom and Canadian customs officers are bro-tier. It's when you head back to US that you'll need lube
Oh, also - paperlogs are cool but certain things can't be fucked with:
-entry into/out of your home yard
-entry into/out of Canada and US
-fuel
-toll
As long as you don't mess with these, you kinda have """" free reign""""

An offbranch of the whole automated car tech community is strategies for platooning, basically exactly this but with radio connection rather than mechanical. All cruise-controls linked, tiny following distance maintained by radar, all brake systems linked, all lane-keeping systems linked. Once you can safely get the trucks close enough to properly draft, there's no significant efficiency-related need to physically hook them together.

There are prototype setups that are only run on private tracks. The biggest danger is radio interference. Current track-running prototypes are all using the same public frequencies as a zillion devices, so it's possible that some asshole's malfunctioning hotspot could nuke a convoy. FCC will have to set aside clean spectrum dedicated for vehicle-to-vehicle communication before these get anywhere close to a public road, and that's not going to happen for a while.

Yeah you do. It's called "time to find another job" because you don't need to be working for a company like that.
>>
>>15227880
But you actually have a big gap, just the stupid long hood and low picture capture point makes it look close.

>>
>>15230554
Take that thing to the nearest weigh station. Show them what the "mechanic" did. DOT would love that shit.
>>
We got this hatian in our class who already has his CDL but can even straight line back. He fucking serpentines the whole way then says it's the trucks fault. How this nigger get his CDL in the first place?

I spoke with the shop this morning. And showed a photo asking if it was legal. They got grumpy and told me the sticker is good till 2017. It looks unprofessional as all hell.
>>
>>15232280
Does your company have a safety dept? If so fwd that to them. File complaints, raise hell. Make a nuisance out of yourself. Something. That isnt legal.

I'm thinking it's the power supply for the gps the Qualcomm uses, not the Qualcomm itself. I noticed today that messages weren't sending even before the Qualcomm noticed anything was wrong, then it went down again later after the truck was off for a few hours at a customer. So I think there's probably a battery in the satellite uplink system that isn't charging/holding a charge right
>>
>>15232699
Having that shit there makes your truck look so cluttered. Would drive me nuts.
>>
>>15233080
Ive been told DOT looks for dash boards like that. Those drivers get pulled around more. Its supposed to be a hazard.
>>
>>15233259
I more meant having that tacky huge fuckin Qualcomm right in the middle of everything, makes it look more cluttered than it actually is. But I could totally see that, all those little projectiles flying around in the cab in an accident. If I was CVSE and saw some truck with little weeb figurines, I'd pull him in just for being a weeb faggot :D
>>
>>15233259
I've been told that too. They also look for dirty trucks. And seeing as I've only been pulled in when the truck is clean and just washed I find it odd
>>
>just got my refund from a kickass auto broker

May want to relocate those doodads off the windshield, I've been told by the shop guys that DOT has ticketed a few Roehl guys for having the GPS there - they claim it's an obstruction of view. I stuck mine to the non-moving window on the driver door, so it's not blocking anything.
>>

>May want to relocate those doodads off the windshield

Small one is a dash cam. DOT/weigh stations havent said anything to me about them... Im starting to see a recurring theme.
>>
>>15233359
Technically anything is an obstruction including the lane camera and prepass. Even the qualcomm counts. So I'm not as worried if dot wants to fine me they will find a way. Regardless
