Hey /o/, could use some help. Today while driving my car started thumping for a split second anytime I'd accelerate from a dead stop in 1st gear. Well about 10 minutes into that drive it started thumping horribly loud constantly at any speed. First thought was driveshaft so I took off the shifter boot and saw this bolt was completely popped out. Would that cause this? If so what's the best way to get it back in?
Car is a 1991 nissan 240sx.
>>
Whatever its attached to is worn out, aka the nut at the end or the threading in what it goes through

Lots of vibration happens in that area, and as soon as something comes a little bit loose it'll wear out ten times as fast
>>
First, inspect the whole shaft. Then rotate the shaft until that bolt is at the bottom, then tighten.
>>
Your car is rear wheel drive so check the bearing supporting the driveshaft. you will have to jack up the rear of the car and look for it. same vibrating thing happened to me and thats because the rubber support has blown apart and the driveshaft flaps about under your car now. i speak with experience of this problem. very simple fix

Literally have no experience with driveshafts, does the car need to be in neutral to turn it by hand?
>>15192302
So you don't think the bolt has anything to do with it? As I said I have no real experience with driveshafts so don't really know how they work. Would the support be right before the diff?

i doubt it. Congratulations OP you know how to remove the gear shift cover... in all seriousness though that wont help. that bolt most likely has no function related to the drive shaft unless its some weird euro design and considering your car is jap... very much doubt.

get under it and look for the support bearing holding up the driveshaft.

this picture? look for number 7... that is the bearing supporting the driveshaft and mostly likely it is the cause of your problem

i had the same issue with my car

Yes and at least one wheel off the ground.

Does anyone know how much it'd cost to have a new carrier bearing pressed in at a shop?

Not familiar with Nissan drive shafts. The advice given about replacing the shaft support bearing and bushing is good.

But also check and (if needed) replace the u-joint (joints?). Often, when these start to bind up, the resulting vibration eats bushings and support bearings. Often, a new u-joint is cheap enough that its worth replacing once you've gone through the trouble of pulling the driveshaft for other repairs as preventative maintenance.
