Power delivery and handling.

Rudimentary explanation: Rear wheel is fat to deal with the power output. Front wheel doesn't have to be that large. Besides, If the front was as fat as the rear you'd have awful handling.

It's an old '85 cruiser (first bike). I can find, say, '88 parts, though. Will those work, or am I stuck paying shit dealer prices?
>>
>>15114435
>Besides, If the front was as fat as the rear you'd have awful handling.
Eh. The bike would be more balanced off throttle, which isn't fast but would probably have some utility for normie road riding.

Like if you had more front it should be harder to low side by being a tard and tucking the front. But it would make it easier to get into an oversteer slide which is probably more dangerous for average riders.
>>
>>15114469
How the fuck is anyone supposed to know without even knowing what bike it is?

So my bike has a magura hydraulic clutch and the engagement point keeps changing. I'm not sure what is causing it. Possibilities I've though of so far
>the set screw is screwing itself

>the slave cylinder on the engine is missing a bolt, so it could be wiggling on there a little bit.

hi /dbt/

im a 5 foot 7 dude, 155 pounds and i am currently in the process of getting my license.

I really, really want to ride a 600 supersports bike, and i am almost certain that one of those will be my first bike.

But i see a lot of people dropping them on youtube, Vloggers and such.

I am a pretty fit guy but do you think i am more prone to dropping the bikes being on the shorter side?

I really dont want my fairings ruined, do you think the damage can be minimized with drop pegs? I am almost certain to install a set of those.
Is it really this bad? do you have to be hulk hogan to keep a 600 SS stable?

You can do start on a super sport, you just have to be VERY aware of what it is you're riding. If you don't it'll be very easy to fuck up and hurt yourself. As for dropping it it's really just like any other bike. Just comes down to not being a retard. You can also get lowering links or something to lower the bike to make it easier for you to get on and off.

REEEEEEEE ALL THE GOOD WEATHER WILL BE GONE BY THE TIME IT'S HERE

Also, if that guy who wanted to know which 600 to go for from last thread is still here, as the owner of both an R6 and a Daytona 675R, go for the Daytona if the price difference doesn't matter. It has a much more exciting engine character, is more agile, sounds amazing and is the prettiest supersport by a mile. Obviously, depending on your location, servicing costs will probably be slightly higher though and the aftermarket, while great, is also more expensive.

Take it from someone who knows absolutely nothing. Don't buy a 600 supersport as a first bike.

Most people say you will outgrow a small bike in no time. I say that's bullshit. I've been riding on a derestricred RS 125 for about a year now. I still can't take that bike it it's limits. And I don't mean on a wide open road. Anyone can WOT and go fast. What takes true skill is learning to ride in the twisties. And a small displacement bike will teach you much more than a 600 ever will there. Every ounce of momentum counts when you can't pick it back up on a whim.

On a closing note I've seen guys on 125 outlap leaderbikes and 600 at the track. It's all a matter of skill not power. Starting on a 600 will make you a worse driver in the end. And it won't make you dick amy bigger.

>>
>>15115599
Okay, nothing to argue there. I personally love the sound of 2 stroke 125s and 250s although they may be hard af to find depending on where you are.

But i see you are settled on a 600. Addressing the dropping it problem. You will drop it, no exceptions. Especially if you like to ride fast or push your limits a bit. The best solution is just living with a scrached up bike. Doesn't affect performance does not affect you.

Depending on the gear but usually between 8k and 13.5k. That's where all the power's at since it's a two stroke.

At 110kmh generally at 9-10k if im riding aggressively. If I'm just cruising om the highway i can drop it down to 6-7k while sacrificing all possible acceleration l.

Guys, I need your honest opinion on this

I know they say that beginners should get the Ninja 250, but I really don't want to go through with the trouble of getting a beginner bike and then selling it for a faster bike 2-3 months down the road.

Are there any other models that are worth considering? I know I am not a retard and pay attention, so dropping the bike is unlikely albeit still possible, but I figure that 250 recommendation is made on the assumption that everyone is a retard

TL;dr can I get a beginner bike thats faster than a 250

My bike is pretty sideways when on the side stand, making it like 20cm wider, ground clearance doesn't matter, both stands are at the same height, level with the bash plate.

There are trolleys especially make to put your bike on, only the centre stand is on it. It's an easy to use and compact way to move your bike around, pic related

It says Ninja 250 because it was like the only beginner sport/standard bike sold in the US for ages and sold like a motherfucker as such, so there's tons of them which makes them easy to get cheap.

In Canada Honda sold the CBR125R for a few years so there's piles of those too, for example.

Ideally you want to ride a starter bike until your insurance rates aren't jacked through the roof anyways.

Alright /dbt/
Haven't posted in a long while
Looking to get my next bike
Dual sport preferably

Needs to be able to handle 20 min commute twice daily ( so not stupid short maitnence intervals )
And it will be used for avid offroading
So I'd like something wih a bit of pep

Id like to stay away from ktms etc simply due to price , and I'm not at all knowledgeable about working on them

Is my best bet a plates wr400'426' or 450
>>
>>15116479
>any WR but a wr250
>thinking you wont have short intervals
Any conversion from a dirt bike you do will have short intervals. Get the DR650, I use it literally how you described but with a 15 min commute, partly highway and it's been nothing but good to me.
>>
>>15116510
I feel a 650 will be too pigfat for my offroading, jumping curbs, sandpits, and hillclimbs

WR450s have a very short maintenance interval, like oil change every 500 miles. I'd go for a WR250 or a DR/KLR/XR650 depending on how much off road or highway you do.
>>
>>15116545
250 will be too small
Maybe I could make due with a klx300 or dr350 but I would like 400+
Maybe I can find a xr650r and plate it
>>
>>15116479
Enduros can usually go around hours on oil when ridden lightly like commuting. That would be a month between each oil change with just your commute. Can you do that?

$400+ to get it street worthy
$240+ per year just on oil
+ potentially a piston, rings, cylinder, valves, con rod bearings, crank, etc. These bikes aren't meant for cheap maintenance, but you can sometimes get away with it.
I've heard of some enduros needing a complete rebuild before 100 hours, or some lasting 40k+ miles on original parts.

WRs seem to get memebike tax in my area, so I was able to find a KTM much cheaper than one of those. This generation of KTM is known to be pretty reliable as well.

Had to do a bunch of shit to it to catch up with maintenance that's been neglected over the years, mainly with the rear suspension.
I don't commute on my bikes and haven't gotten to ride a whole lot this year though. Second oil change and valve check probably tomorrow, at 20 hours. Engine seems to be holding together fine. Hopefully I can make it last for 40k miles like some people.

btw $20 for an oil change is assuming you buy conventional oil. Synthetic is a lot more expensive.

You buy a new air filter every time instead of just cleaning and re-oiling it?
2-strokes are also less fuel efficient and consume oil with their fuel which nearly doubles the fuel cost. And you would have to carry a jug of oil with you all the time because you can't just fill up with gas.
>cheap, simple rebuilds though

Ohio is stupid easy. I literally just signed an affidavit stating that the bike had turn signals, a horn, etc. and they gave me a street title. No inspection or anything.

I usually do just wash and re-lube my filter, but after three times I buy a new one.

Mixing oil isn't too bad. It comes out to an extra dollar per gallon. I keep a 5 gallon jug at home and use that to top off the bike when I'm done riding.

If I'm caught out on the road and need gas, I just keep 12oz of oil in a baby bottle in my backpack along with tools and use an app on my phone to calculate how much oil to add to my tank after I fill up at the gas station.

Hey guys,

Bike noob here. I have a 2014 Royal Enfield C5 with about 1,200 miles on it. I've only ridden another 1,000 miles in India, so I'm not exactly an experienced biker.

I think I fucked something up today and am just looking for some clarification. I rode over to visit my dad on the other side of the state today, gave my bike a good wash, and then stopped at the gas station to fuel up before heading home. However, after adding 2.5 gallons to my 3-gallon tank, I wasn't able to get my bike started.

It took 20-30 minutes of trying to get going. After I shifted into second gear on the road, my bike lost power but I was able to regain it after downshifting and accelerating.

Is it possible that overfilling the tank could have led to starting problems? I read a detailed answer online about how motorbikes which are configured to meet emissions requirements can have a charcoal thing which could get soaked when you overfill, leading to the bike not being able to start without some adjustments. The dealer, who helpfully gave me a call on a Sunday evening, said it was also possible that the sensor on the kickstand wasn't registering that it was up and preventing my bike from stalling.

REs have kind of a shit reputation, but everyone I've talked to who has ridden a post-2009 model has had zero complaints, so I'm not TOO worried about a big problem.

Please help a riding noob out.

was it making noise but not actually firing? This is something wrong with the bike that may or may not be serious. Is it carbed? This could very well be the problem. Was it making no noise at all? Like the starter button didn't work almost? this sounds more like a killswitch being faulty. And lastly does it have a "on-off-reserve" petcock? That could be doing it along with maybe a bad fuel filter.
>>
>>15116933
anon there are so many variables.
>India
Could be bad gas. Could be fouled plug. You have to do the basics anon. Pull the plug, what color is it? Siphon your gas. Is it anything other than normal looking? Did you wash it and get some water somewhere? Is your air filter water logged?
>>
>>15116969
>>some idiot talking about bullshit for 15 minutes
So basically any motovlog that isn't about technique or maintenance no?
>>
>>15116987

Yes, it's carbed.

It was making noise. In fact, it was making the same noise it usually does when I have the kickstand down. It'd fire up but not get to the point where the engine would rev and come to life. Sometimes I would hear the exhaust kind of burp.

(sorry, my bike is teaching me about mechanical stuff - I don't know much vehicle parlance yet)

I don't know if it has a petcock.

At any rate, I have a 2-year warranty so it's not going to cost me anything to get fixed. I talked to the dealer and he said not to stress too much, but we'll see. I didn't have any problems starting or going after I got it on the road and recovered from the loss of power.
>>
>>15116994

Ride it. Give less fucks.

spark plug was black and dry so too rich. what else should I be looking for?
only thing kinda suspect is this thing on the side of my carb like pic related it's cracked. ever so slightly

electric vehicles as a whole are a retarded idea because they do more harm to the environment as a whole opposed to regular vehicles
>>
>>15117221
OK so two things, one DCT is for bitches, you shift a bike, no exceptions. Two, the Africa twin is a brand new model, if you're new to bikes you won't want a brand new bike and it's kind of a lot if bike for a new rider. Try looking at Vstrom 650s or 650 single GS's if you really want an ADV bike.

I believe that's the accelerator. It makes its own minute adjustments to the air/fuel mixture for smooth acceleration?

The one on my bike got lost and it seems to run fine without it. Someone please enlighten me about these things.

>>15117080
As much as I like this advice (and follow it to a T) I'm really afraid of being stuck somewhere when my bike won't start and having to be a burden on someone to come help me. I've come out to a dead battery issue I still can't explain on my DR and had to help co workers get it going. P embarrassing.

I don't see how an oil could be specific to a certain cylinder configuration anyway. I guess it might be because cruiser engines are usually hella low strung and aren't stressed very much.

My fofiddy is pretty much the opposite. Anyway I figure any motorcycle-compatible full synthetic would be a step up from conventional oil of the same grade/specification. Oil debates never go anywhere so I'll try it myself. I'm not going to pay $12+ per quart of oil though so it's this or conventional.

Spray something with hydrocarbons on the cracked bit. If the revs increase it is sucking air in from the crack and you will have to replace it.

So here on another edition of "I've been working at my dads shop and I have crappy pictures of wacky bikes" A 73 V7 sport racing sidecar, at last dyno it made 70 HP to the rear wheel, and we're currently putting in larger diameter custom pistons so the madman can get more horsepower, it may actually break 100 HP at the crank.

This a 1940 Indian Four, currently in the process of having an original long body sidecar mounted on it. The reason there's no sidecar body is because this color isn't made by anyone, anywhere, and the place it was originally brought to can't match a color.

Capacity literally has nothing to do with how fast you learn to ride.
Saying that starting on a 250 will somehow magically make you a better rider is the same attitude that guys who go out and buy litrebikes as their first bike have, just on a different end of the spectrum.

>>15115498
Just buy whatever bike you feel comfortable with. Keeping a bike stable and not dropping it is based more on height of the seat and centre of mass than anything else.
For example, my DR650 is wayyy easier to drop than my VTR1000 because of the high seat and centre of mass.
Don't grab the brakes if you feel yourself falling over and you should be fine.
That being said, you WILL drop the bike, so maybe you should consider getting a naked bike like an MT-07 or something if you don't want to damage any fairings?
Drop pegs minimise damage but can only do so much.
I'm assuming you're US, so unfortunately you cucked yourselves out of any of the 400cc supersports that us Australians have or otherwise I would have recommended one of those.

>>15117536
