I just installed mtec clutch springs yesterday, and I swear to God I never stall anymore. I learned clutch on this frs, and I still stall once I'm a blue moon after 2 months, but these springs are so worth it. I'm still sitting on shifting springs I haven't installed yet.

Pic is my frs. Has a axleback exhaust for the rice, and mtec springs. Next install are shift springs then new wheels. Any suggestions for autox wheels? Looking at rpf1

Sorry senpai
>>
>>15113886
GT86 failing was Toyota wanting to stick to the purity of the machine. If they had put a bigger engine/hp like BMW 335i (even though BMW 335i has worse weight distribution than 325i), people would have looked upto the GT86 and have no problem in buying the purer version. right now, many get discouraged by no power arguments, thou it has enough if you don't track and know how to shift.
>>
I'm a richfag and want to buy a car for the express purpose of modding the fuck out of it. Is the chassis on the twins conducive to heavy modding? Is the chassis even good enough to warrant me sinking 15k+ in to the car? I have heard the stock engine can't handle much power - is that true? If so, can I swap it with something bigger? Or should I not even bother with them? What modern car is a mod beast? Money is no object.

Now B is for Build has a nice series about drinking beer while working on a beat up BRZ in the backyard, getting it back on the road. Faith in youtube instantly restored.

As for the car, I have around €16k in the bank for me to access, paychecks adding up to roughly another €4k by the end of summer and a car that should still be worth 5 to 7k. The bulk of Toyobarus around here are still at around €20k, with the occasional deal for 19 or even 18. I hope the price will drop once the new model is out, so I can afford one and still have money left for coilovers, brakes, real tires, stronger sway bars, modifications to make the exhaust sound like more than a lawn mower maybe some TRD parts like the steering wheel or front bumper, insurance and gas. Forced induction will come next year.

Please tell me my dream will come true.

I'll make the case that both the BRZ/FRS and the Miata are right about their power levels because you can play around with them without getting in trouble or killing yourself. More power would only appease bench racers and the odd guy who does track it while making it more expensive and out of reach of the audience they were aiming for. If you want more power from the factory, get a WRX.

Some folks really like working on their own cars and upgrading them as they see fit. These cars tend to have cheaper parts too so modding is more cost effective and if you break something it's not too big a deal and you can replace it.

Also, you can buy the car now and buy upgrades as you get more money, as opposed to saving up all the way before getting the car at all.

Anyone who wants more power in an 86 can add more power, pretty cheaply.

A stock ap1 s2000 performs better than an FR-S, you can grab one of those for $15k here.

And for $15k you can have 250whp, 2300lb car (turbo miata).

All this talk about "entry level sports car" doesn't make sense. A true entry level sports car is a used sports car.
>>
>>15116181

Look you either like to mod or you don't. I can't explain it to you. What you're telling me to do is to go out and get a 7 or more year old car with over 100k miles on the engine. When I can get a new car with close to zero miles on the engine and start with a blank slate and make it into what I want.
>>
>>15116181
S2000s are very rare here and almost impossible to find in stock condition. If you can't spend well over 20k, you'll have to settle for fully riced out by 3 previous owners.

>>15115828
That wasn't even me.

If you would read the post I wrote earlier you would notice two things.

1st that I'm NOT surprised that it does more power and torque, because Toyota and Subaru decided that they want a tiny as fuck engine bay with a weak flatfuck shit and they decided to not turbocharge it.

2nd you absolutely missed the part about 320is, which does basically the same power and has more torque. 30 years of development and all they managed is to catch up and make it more eco-friendly.

Way to go lad, enjoy your buyer's remorse, I'll wait for a 6cyl version refresh or just buy an M2 once the prices start to drop.
>>
>>15116228
>start with a blank slate and make it into what I want
You can't though. The 86 has the potential to be a somewhat quick RWD, but there are far superior starting points out there, like the AP1.

If all you want is the performance a superior starting point offers, start out with that. If you don't see the logic in that I can't understand what is wrong with you? Is it some autistic urge that you have to drive a car that has been 'customized' with bolt on parts?
>>

This.

It is frankly unforgivable on Toyota's part, and it speaks volumes about the experience and capability of 86 fanboys. The people defending the 86 literally have no idea what they don't know. They had a 97 corolla before hand and they can't comprehend how somebody could apply the labels 'slow' or 'crappy' to the rocketship they just upgraded to.

It is a lack of humility really.

I'm glad you're not surprised that a turbocharged engine makes more power/torque than an NA engine. If you were, I would say you are dumb as Fuck. Even though you initially posted a picture of a ford cosworth as your main argument.

>2nd you absolutely missed the part about 320is, which does basically the same power and has more torque. 30 years of development and all they managed is to catch up and make it more eco-friendly.

About the 320is...way to cherry pick a bmw that was only made in Italy and Portugal. Not to mention the 320is weighs roughly 2600lbs, compared to the BRZ at 2775lbs.

You keep focusing on power, but the truth is, the 86 is the lightest rwd car that you can buy new that has more than 2 seats. Obviously sacrifices have to be made the when you're selling a brand new car for 25k in 2016.

>Way to go lad, enjoy your buyer's remorse, I'll wait for a 6cyl version refresh or just buy an M2 once the prices start to drop

Keep holding your breath on a 6 cylinder 86, it's never going to happen.

Then it'd be more expensive and heavier and would have to take on cars like a BMW 130i. This car only works because they've kept it basically a barebone with just enough power to be okay but be cheap enough to stay away from the competitors with great power.

If you want a more expensive car with a larger engine or full-blown turbo engine, by all means do. The GT86 never intended to be that car and it never will be out of the factory.

What is your point? The 86 was basically made to be modified. Obviously a turbo engine will respond to mods better, but it's not like a turbo engine is without shortcomings when compared to NA engines.

If I could do it still over again, I would still pick the 86. A fixed top coupe is a huge plus for me. Not everyone focuses on having the best lap times. That's my point. The ND is nice, but not 26k nice. I have a feeling the fiat is the same. I would rather have a 6 cylinder camaro.

That's ironic, considering I'd get the Abarth for the fun of top down driving, the exhaust note and the torque for easy daily drive-ability - not for the fastest lap times.

What's also ironic, is that the convertible ends up being the better performance bargain, weighing in at 2300lbs and supported by a large aftermarket on both the Mazda front for chassis and Abarth on the engines.

It's cool that you enjoy your subaru though.

Lmao at people getting angry about the FRS/BRZ/86.

The car doesn't have power, it has handling and feeling that's above and beyond that which normally comes with the price tag. Let's be real, too. The car was designed for more power, but most drivers on the road can't handle it even in the stock form despite the predictable and fun nature of it.

It's a puritan's car that's designed for pleasantries and fun. It's incredibly modular and very easy to make unique. It's as forgiving and fun as you want it to be, and can do whatever you want it to do if you get hands-on with it and do the light mode to make it so.

It's a great car because it's not trying to be fast or insane. It's a great car because it's modular, fun, and versatile. It's the new 240sx in almost every way and handles better than most cars on the road.

The biggest complaint everyone she is the lack of speed. Oh no you want more power? It's super easy to get anything you want out of it; a supercharger or turbo with stock everything else can run you from $3.5k to $6k with all the reliability and adjustability you could ever want. It's a dream to work on because everything just fits together. The car can handle and perform exactly as you want because it's a blank canvas, not the Mona Lisa.

Oh and the argument that its a great car, not because of anything that makes a car great, but because of "Its a blank canvas." is just fucking stupid. Its garbage and just to bring it up to the competitions level will cost 3.5k-6k is fucking ridiculous. Not to mention that in this thread it has been said that the tranny cant handle anything over 250hp. So, 3.5k-6k just for the supercharger, then supporting mods (Intake, exhaust and so on) then you need to upgrade the tranny. I think it's time you realized you've been had and that you know nothing about what a good car is.

>>
>>15120222
Haha holy shit you are so mad. I own one of these and can comfortably tell you how much power they can hold.

Btw the stock trans holds up to 400 hp and the stock clutch can do 330 hp before skipping. Stock internals in the block hold 350 safely while 400 is dangerous.

At least I'm not getting mad over someone's taste in cars. At least I'm the one tracking my car and having fun with it.

But hey, keep throwing out useless conjecture without any supporting data. Forums, breakdowns, and reviews will happily make you look bad.
>>
>>15120529
>stock clutch can do 330 hp before skipping
You surely mean torque, not power.
>>
>>15120543
not him, but he's not far off. alot of people putting supercharger kits on stock clutch getting about 250whp with zero issues
>>
>>15120561
Of course, because the stock clutch can take a lot more torque than what the stock engine is kicking out, but thats not really related to the maximum power of the engine/car. Maximum torque is important for the clutch.
>>
>>15120582
i think a little over 200 lb ft you may start having issues, basically 50-60 over stock. so many factors depending on kit and shit
>>
>>15120582
The problem is that the clutches are fickle. Some take abuse way better than others for whatever reason. I've seen some that can take 500 hp and some that can't even take 250 hp.

400 is where most blow out, but part that is where the trans plays Russian roulette with whatever gears it likes, somehow alternating between 2nd and 4th the most.

I found average 86 owners the other day.
>>
I found a GT86 within my budget with the exact trim I'm looking for, down to every single part except the color, but oh well. The dealership says the engine runs but not perfectly and is making a rattling noise. It's the 2014 model and has run 20,000km, they're asking €15k, while almost all older GT86s/BRZs with more mileage are around €19k at least.

Now, what DOESN'T make a rattling sound in this car? Which GT86/BRZ/FR-S has never been in limp-mode for some bullshit reason? What are the chances that the problem will take more than the difference €4k to fix?

It's advertised as a "salvage" car, despite not having been in an accident, and doesn't seem to have any damages other than the engine problems. It can't be found easily on the go-to websites if you're looking for a car and I'd figure even if someone found it, they'd stay away from it.

Should I make the 6 hour trip and check it out? I guess I could push the price even lower. I'll definitely call tomorrow and ask for the history of the car and more details.

tl;dr: Found a ridiculously cheap GT86 with a rattling engine, does anyone have experience with likely causes?

Not him, but logic and common sense tells you that a coupe will always be more rigid than a convertible. The Miata might be sufficiently rigid, but will ultimately be less rigid than the GT86. Toyota has engineered the roof humps to make it more rigid and they're selling little metal pieces for the door locking mechanism to make the doors more rigid while closed.

THAT'S engineering magic, the duke's had to weld the doors of the General Lee shut to make it rigid.

Original post:
>chassis rigidity of miata is much lower than gt86

He was asking for proof that it was
>much lower

Yea, reading comprehension. Go fuck yourself.

My point was that the MX-5 chassis isn't nearly as weak as these people make it out to be.

Sure, the transmission is made of glass. Chassis is fine.

Jesus Christ you're a retard. I show you the post the sparked the discussion in a polite manner and you tell me to go fuck myself? After realizing that your complaint was invalid you come up with "uh, actually my point was" and blame some arbitrary "people" for making claims I can't even remember reading in this thread.

A sports car (sportscar) is a small, usually two seater, two door automobile designed for spirited performance and nimble handling. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the first known use of the term was in 1928.

Sports cars may be spartan or luxurious, but high maneuverability and minimum weight are requisite. They may be equipped for racing, "especially an aerodynamically shaped one-passenger or two-passenger vehicle having a low center of gravity and steering and suspension designed for precise control at high speeds."

'spirited performance'

'200hp 150ft/lb torque'

A car may be a sporting automobile without being a sports car. Performance modifications of regular, production cars, such as sport compacts, sports sedans, muscle cars, hot hatches and the like, generally are not considered sports cars, yet share traits common to sports cars

>sporting automobile without being a sports car

So you admit that it's not a sports car?
>>
>>15124547
The GT86 fits every single line of the definition. Your Civic Type R is merely a "sporting automobile", not a sports car.
>>
>>15124569
I don't have a Civic type R

The GT86 isn't a sports car, it's a coupe.
>>
>>15124574
Which criteria does it not meet? If you're gonna tell me the engine isn't powerful enough to make it a sports car, please close the tab to avoid embarrassing yourself.

So, a Lotus isn't a sports car either?

A lotus exige/elise meets the criteria of 'spirited performance' and 'nimble handling', whereas the GT86 does not.
>>
>>15124691
Who are you to judge what's 'spirited' and 'nimble' and what's not?

>U want it to be loud as fuck? Go ahead ricer boys. I can afford a great car to drive year round.
