25 years and older is a "Classic" but it needs more than age, it needs a certain something to make it a classic. (Older than 1980 is definitely classic?)

God I knew that feel. Pic related was literally my cellphone for almost 2 years. Also boys I got some not so great news. There is a chance that I may not be moving for much longer than originally intended. I may be on Long Island for another 2 years. Because of this, I have been looking at the local craigslist because I really wanna get something older. What do you guys think of the top 3 things I am considering?

Early for going to have the ferd within the next month. It's going to be my dd here in Denver for the foreseeable future. So what I'm going to need to do is:
>Buy a new carb
>Get it tuned for Denver altitude
>Eventually replace heater core and plumb lines
>Get snow tires
>Maybe swap in an AOD at some point for dat overdrive

What do your his think? What would I need to do to make the old girl ready for some real work

nice, thats something to start with.

germany is a small country. so are the streets and other cars. its sometimes hard to get some corners in the city and you dont even need to get the idea of finding space to park you car. otherwise its nice because its a rare car here and you get many good response from other people

AC Delco drum brake rebuild.jpg
195KB, 1280x1024px
Hey guys,

Couple questions. So my car is currently running and now driving. I have only driven 10 feet on my driveway back and forth as a feeler. Tires are dry rotted so I will need to replace those too. Car seems to stall after a minute or idling, or sometimes, just randomly. Is that normal in a classic car or does that need to get tuned out?

Also, I have drums on all 4 wheels and it does not want to stop. The brake pedal feels firm, but I press it to the floor and at 5 mph, it will still continue to roll for 5 more feet. It doesn't brake hard like a regular car. Is that normal?

I want to rebuild the brakes completely and flush them. I checked the brake drums and pretty much all of them had cracks and one had a deep deep gouge.

Can you guys give me an opinion on this shopping cart list? $60 bucks in shipping seems way steep for me, but autozone and pepboys carry cheap brands I think. Unless if I can find it at a Chevy dealership? Or special order it from a small mom and pop place that might be able to get it for me. Is there anything I'm missing for a complete rebuild?

I know some of you guys might say at this price I should probably just go disc brakes.
>>
>>15117343
The stalling could be a multitude of issues and we need more background.

The 4 wheel drum brakes likely need adjusted out or you have collapsed hoses. Drums are also just good enough on most classics, but no more. Look at scarebird kits for a disk conversion.

Rockauto is usually the cheapest even with the shipping unless you have a friend that works at a shop with a corporate account.

And you don't need 4 sets of brake shoes man. 1 per axle is fine.
>>
>>15117379
Whoops, didn't notice that announcement.

I posted a video here for reference. Although the webm got cut right before it stalls out.
>>>/wsg/1095066

It also has this weird knock coming from under the valve covers after shut off. Is this something to worry about?
>>>/wsg/1095071
>>
>>15117428
That ticking is just metal expanding/contracting when it's hot, nothing to worry about.
As for the stall, check for vacuum leaks. Is the carb rebuilt? if not, rebuild it with a new kit. Is the choke shutting off to early or is it warm enough where you are that you don't need to worry about a choke?
>>
>>15117343
Ditch the drum setup.
I've converted multiple classics to disks, the difference makes me wonder how drums were even legal.
You can go aftermarket, but if you're on a budget- you can swap parts from a slightly newer Chevy or from a '68 that had the option.
You'll also have to convert the master cylinder but that's a simple procedure.
Seriously- at least do the front. Safety is #1 priority.

Brand new carb from Summit with electric choke. Although I live in Sunny California, so no problems with it being too cold.

I haven't even looked at the timing yet, so I think that may be an issue as well. I haven't even adjusted the carb jets either. Still learning with these older engines.

I might have to call my mechanic over to have a look at it.

Don't even bother putting it on your truck unless you can find a rebuild kit for it, from the list number on it.

well I've heard that there isn't much gains in performance, say you put a 4 barrel adapter onto a two barrel manifold, while a 4 barrel carb is on it, you'd expect better performance, but it's still going through a two barrel intake, so gains might be minimal.
Same applies to 2 barrel to 1 barrel

I wanna get to flavortown faster and need a new exhaust.
Probably gonna choose the bolt in TTI ones with Dynomax Super Turbo Mufflers with TTI headers for convenience.

3 inch is obviously better than 2.5 inch, but is the 3 inch exhaust noisy enough to make me fail inspections if the limit is 95db?

Inspections are Grade A shit here.
>>
>>15127526
I have a 2.75" and hit 91db out the back at 4300 rpm. All bets are off with the dumps open. What engine are you talking because it will make a difference as well as what RPM they test at.

Get the opposite offset and run them upside down so the logos are against the trunk pan. I doubt they are going to drop the exhaust down to look at serial numbers. Also, what communist shithole do you live in?
>>
>>15128632

Luxembourg. It's pretty good if you have a supercar or luxury car, but anything classic or shitbox-y gets the red pen treatment real quick.
They're also pretty anal about security on anything that's relatively race-y, so my friend's rollcaged 200hp pre-BMW Mini had to be built to really high standards.
But really, as long as you're not doing a hackjob or your car isn't too loud or rusty you're fine

>>
>>15128702
Fuck all that, if its before 1995 I can run open headers and only have to worry about a neighbor getting pissy. Then again, most diesels run a 5" turboback straight through exhaust here so that's probably why.

Ccg I need helfen. I have a 66 elco and my drivers side taillight doesn't come on. I changed the bulb and nothing. Now when I use the turn signal all my lights blink (my dash lights, right tail light, and license plate light.) Im not sure where to start looking for the gremlin. Could it be a bad ground? Any help is appreciated
>>
>>15128702

Oh and another thing, people don't like old cars here.
Sure you have classics, but people buy a new car every 5 or even 3 years. Tax deductions on loans are crazy and the value of selling a somewhat new car to a bloke in Germany evens everything out.

This mentality makes it kinda hard to own something when it has to be like everything else that's out right now. A boring shitbox that's new.

I'm lucky because my car doesn't have rust, I don't drive it in the rain either and it's relatively well maintained with good tires, good brakes and intact suspension. Drive it in, stock car, no problems, drive out.
I can't imagine what someone with a rusty Golf that's rollcaged and on all-seasons has to go through.
>>
>>15128736
Could be a bad ground, but im more apt to believe it is a bad power wire that runs the tail light. Mine has a 2 power wire setup, one running from the flasher and one running from the light switch on the dash. The latter ties into the brake light switch though yours might be a tad different so break out a multimeter and check for power with the lights on at the socket.

Plans finalized, flight booked; I'm going to be buying an Imperial, gentlemen.

It's going to be great working on a Mopar again. I love the 440 motor and have rebuilt one before; so I'll probably pull this one shortly after the trip. I'll also be upgrading it to front discs, a dual brake booster, supplemental radiator cooling fans, and a few other things here and there. This car will be my daily driver.

All that's left is to fly out, drive it back, and decide what color to redo the interior in, remove the vinyl top and paint the roof flat black instead, then decide what to do about the body.

Hey fellas, I had a bit too much fun up in the mountains over the long weekend and did a number on Old Brown. Accidentally hit a deactivation trench on a logging road at around 30 km/h and now the gap between the cab and bed is angled inward a bit. My first concern is obviously frame damage but I find it odd that both sides of the bed have angled in evenly and neither side is tilting or sagging more than the other, the bed is level horizontally with the cab (top of the bed is nice and parallel with the bottom of the rear window).

Is it more likely that I simply beat the piss out of the rubber cab/body mounts? I took a quick look at the two cab mounts nearest the middle of the frame and they look pretty okay (pictures inbound).

Does this sort of a bend more likely to be a frame kink rather than loose/damaged mounts? Have any of you dealt with this on one of your trucks before?

Will do. The car is rust-free; hence why I'm going to Arizona to get it. The interior is fairly baked, regrettably, but I'd rather swap out an interior than try to perform chemotherapy and surgery to fight body cancer.

To that end, >>15131730
Depends on the car and the severity.

It's also one of the few cars I like better in 4-door form than 2-door.

Any opinions on what I should do about the body paint?

First thing I did (pic related) but it's tough to tell without having the truck up on a hoist and being able to view the entire length of the frame clearly. I have hoist access on Thursday and will have a better view of everything then but I figured I'd ask around in advance and see if there are any other parts / mounts I should focus on that would cause this sort of angling between the cab and bed.

New to this, looking to get a 1st gen Celica but I have no idea what it's like to own a car so old?
How do you get parts? I know some stuff will be interchangeable (with some work possibly).
>>
>>15134197
old car benchmarks versus new car benchmarks are waay different. A TA22 celica was a good entry level sports car for its day in comparison with everything else regarding hp, power to weight, handling, ease of maintenance etc.

You compare the once good TA22 to a pleb every day car like a 05 civic and its absolute shit house in comparison. My Valiant with a once renown reputation for power from its 265 Hemi, economy with ELB and handling compared to contemporary large cars is fucked in the ass by basic bitch cars such as FG XT Falcons which push 260hp with n/a poverty pack engines, handling actually being decent and above all else has modern comforts its a wonder to see old cars still on the road. However old cars are more than this
>what it's like to own a car so old?
Driving them isnt too bad, they're only louder and smell like fuel but they're comfortable if you're under 6 foot. Depending on their upkeep prior to purchase they're either really reliable only requiring bi annual oil changes to keep it happy or certain parts randomly fail due purely to the age of the car, so it ends up being fixed as much as it gets used.
>How do you get parts
Parts car is the easiest and cheapest way to go for parts. However, eBay, Craigslist, wrecking yards or vintage japanese car yards may have them. I have a 70's chrysler car yard down the road from where i live so its good for parts
>will some stuff be interchangeable
no. only engine parts if it was shared by another car but specifics will be ta22 only like panels, interior items, glass etc some basic parts like the diff, brakes, rotors, calipers, transmission might have also been used on other cars too
>>
>>15134260
Yeah I understand that older cars are typically objectively inferior, but I've wanted a Celica for quite some time now. Thanks for the response, another question; are they money pits? I really want the Celica but with the lack of local parts cars and currently I don't think I could handle the logistics of owning a classic (lack of tools and experience), should I just go for a modern car like an S2000?
>>
>>15134197
Switch to electronic ignition, let the car warm up a good 10 minutes before driving off and it should be fine.

Older cars will let you know well beforehand when something is going to go wrong.
If you hear a weird noise during normal operating temperatures, it's worth getting looked at.

>>15134316
>are they money pits?
Most old cars are, it's unfortunate but who cares when you have fun with it?

Just buy a socket set and learn as you go.

well mine ran like a bag of dicks. The carb I put on was specifically designed for a 390 FE but I put it on a 360 FE. Overfueled like mother fucker, even though it didn't blacken the plugs, got 5.5 mpg out of it
>>
>>15138909
Fug. I just am really tired of the pos autolite single barrel and I have this super old Holley 4412 but I don't know how much can it has and I don't know if it is a good or bad idea to put it on with an adapter plate. That being said, I am tempted to pick up some efi exhaust manifolds

Did you search up the list number o nyour carb tp find out what cfm it is? Being a 2 barrel, I can't imagine it's more than 350 cfm
>>
>>15138935
Everything about the 4412 points to 500cfm but that is for newer models. Idk if it has that much can though.
>>
>>15138947
I highly doubt you'd get 500 cfm out of that two barrel dude, that's really high
>>
>>15138926
What CFM is your autolite carb? Is it a 1V or 2V carb? What's the venturi size? These things will tell us wayyyy more than you could imagine. That 4412 is beyond what any stock six needs at all at 500cfm. Here's a link with TONS of good info on the Autolite carbs, a CFM estimator, etc.

http://classicinlines.com/autolitecarbs.asp
>>
>>15138959
Not at all. They actually made a 450cfm 1bbl. Hell, some 2bbls for racing ran into the 750cfm range which is well into 4bbl territory. The difference is the annular jet sizing combined with the size and number of venturi in the carb itself. Take the Edelbrock 1406 series. It, in 600cfm form is identical from the outside to a 1000 CFM Performer XL and even has the same baseplate sizing. I even mistook my 1407 for a 1405 at first glance and thought I was decently underfueled, but upon rebuild and measuring found it to be a 1407 750. If I think about it, I will try swapping the venturis from an old 1406 to my 1407 and see if it fits which I'm almost positive it does. Thats how manufacturers can offer a rebuild kit for a line of carburetors and nit each individual rating.

>>15138932

I did mean body on frame. Chrysler went to unibody in 1960; with the exception of the Imperial. I've had bad experience with them rusting and being a bitch to repair; one of the reasons that many Chryslers from 1960 and up were scrapped.

>>15139017

I'd check casting codes if you have the spare time. On a side note, I though Autolites were much more prevalent in the 1bbl market as opposed to Carter's primarily 4bbl AVS market, but I don't really deal with 1bbls. Only ones I've ever touched were Weber SDs on an L28 equipped Datsun. Pic related, she's in a sad state atm but rust and AutoX took their toll. On the plus side, I have all NOS metal from core support back in the car waiting to be welded in.

fuck. alright, well, I am currently having a problem with my carb. it was working fine a while ago, but when I went to drive it last it simply would not idle. on the gas it was great, but coming to a stop off the gas or idling it would just die. you need to keep your foot on the gas to keep it working.

any idea what is happening familia?

This is my car. Extremely close to succumbing to rot, riding out it's last years as a rice burner with me. I've taken it racing once and did fairly well. The engine has a good exhaust note, extremely durable, and makes good power for how small it is.

You probably don't think of it as a classic, and most people don't. It is the platform that started Subaru's rally career, and one of the cars Colin McRae raced in his earlier rally career.

This pic is from this winter. Since then I painted the hood silver and took the black stuff off the fender.
