on my third build now. all former builds have just started shitting pistons and bearings.

my biggest issue is that i can't get the car to idle for very long, choke helps a little bit, but not for long.

engine sounds really nice at first, idling at 1000, then it just dies. sometimes i'll get a backfire/misfire, other times not.

that worked on my first build. had to use a shitton of clutch as well. after driving it for about 40 minutes, it held the idle nicely, but eventually lost all its performance.

all subsequent builds have ended in complete and utter failure though.

Can someone help me with some troubleshooting?

I was driving down the road only a few hundred meters from my house when suddenly some kind of clear liquid start flying up out of the hood for a few seconds then disappeared. I immediately stopped the car but didn't turn it off. I watched closely and saw that the oil gauge was all they down to zero and the temperature was steadily rising, so I shut the engine off and reloaded the game.

I'm guessing there's some sort of oil leak because after logging back in, I checked the rocker cover and it was very, very low. I filled it up with oil, started it up, then watched the oil gauge slowly drop. Checked the oil level again and yup, there's a leak.

The question is, what can I do about this? Where should I begin looking for the leak? Can it actually be fixed in this build?

Try installing the rear wheels first, you can do the suspension bits with just one corner jacked up and it makes the forklift shenanigans much easier. If you build the front suspension as well it becomes utterly trivial, but if you do that then you'll have to disassemble a bunch of parts once you get the engine installed

I don't bother with the forklift until the wheels are on. You can get everything on to attach all 4 wheels without a jack. Then I use the lift

Who else here does some endurance racing? I started doing this yesterday: using the shop as a pitstop, get out on the highway and trying doing laps all the way around and back.

It's actually really fun. On my first try, I did one lap but the engine started overheating around 2/3rds of the way around due to constant redlining at 200-210 km/h. Engine started popping and was taking a few seconds to lower the revs so I slowed down and cruised for a bit and the engine seemed to sort itself out.

Took a pitstop and checked everything (I brought all my fluids/toolbox/jack to the shop and left them there) then filled up with gas and started again. This time I powered through the overheating by hanging just below the redline and managed to do two full laps and probably could have gone further but I there was some kind of clear liquid spraying out of the hood periodically so I took another pitstop. All the fluids were fine so I'm not sure what it was. I'm gonna do some more laps in a few minutes.

I really wish this game had multiplayer.

Yep. H-shifter, clutch, brake, and throttle all work. No FFB implemented in this build though. According to dev's friend who was running a stream, they've since implemented working FFB, but it's in "beta" currently and gets kind of fucky if you go between the van, car, tractor, and truck.

Another minor discovery: if you rev the throttle linkage on a carburetor that's not installed (in my case, I have the stock carb sitting next to the car), it will still rev the engine, so watch out.

I'm at my wits end here. ever since installing the performance exhaust the thing won't stay running. I've adjusted the carb endlessly, even bought the performance carb to see if that would fix it. but no matter what I do the fucking thing won't stay running, I have to keep giving it gas to keep it going even when it's fully warmed up

I understand why he doesn't want to basically recreate the entire game again. Is it safe to start the car without the air filter? It's a pain in the ass to reach the idle screw and throttle linkage.

V8s have never been a thing in Finland since they use a buttfuck amount of fuel and fuel is taxed to hell and back, not to mention the increase in insurance costs and taxes.

Also, there is a limitation as to how much you can increase the power output of a car. Not sure what the legislation was during the 90s, but quite recently your car could only output 20% more than the most powerful variant of your car could output. Also, the displacement of the engine could only increase 25%. There's also a restriction on power to weight ratio.

I only did one build with the stock parts before I upgraded everything. I didn't have an issue with the stock one iirc. Maybe try the performance carb and see if it still happens. Be sure to check all of your fluids, the spark plugs, oil filter, and even valves.

Page up and page down. You will need to jack up both ends of the car to fit the forks under or you could just jack up one end, put the wheels on then do the same at the other end.

I built all the rest of the car outside and then took the engine out on the hoist, dropped it in, got some of the mounts on then lifted it to get to the one on the back of the engine by the firewall

Valves might be a bit out of adjustment. Make sure you refill oil after adjusting them as well if you took the rocker cover off. Check to see if the choke is all the way in and if it's still a bit off you wanna adjust idle screw more

I have done 5 builds. Everytime I have put the fanbelt on while the alternator is bolted on. Everytime I have bolted the engine to the hoist without having to reload the game.

by nudging it in with the van (don't bother the car will just fall into the pit at some point while you're working on it, if not while nudging it in)

The car can be re-aligned on top of the pit by throwing the toolbox at the tires. I almost dropped my Datsun in the pit but the toolbox helped me. The physics of this game are awesome.
