One day I was just sitting around doing nothing important and the word "Skyline" popped into my head.

I dunno why, I didn't know anything about r32-34s, I didn't even know they were illegal in the states. But I felt extremely compelled to play a video game where I could drive a skyline. I HATED racing video games up until that moment, after looking for a good game I downloaded Gran Turismo 4 and started learning about the basic mechanics of car racing/handling.

I had lots of fun, then a few days later I started watching initial D and my interest TOOK OFF.

Here we are, years later, i'm not too interested in skylines anymore but I'm learning how to wrench and I plan on getting a funsies car that I can beat to shit learning how to drive like dagumi soon.

I was at a dealer with my mom when I was 15 or so years old, repairing some broken shit in our 2006 Town & Country. Chilling out at the dealer, I saw a brand new first gen Challenger SRT8. Thought that was the coolest shit in the world, started looking up shit online. Aggressive downward spiral into automotive addiction from there. It's like PC building but more money to waste.

When I bought my first car my dad said when it needed maintenance he would help me out with parts and hands on stuff, but if I wanted to take it to a shop I was on my own for covering costs. Considering I bought a 30 year old BMW for $1200 I was pretty much forced into doing my own work to avoid bankruptcy lol. Fell in love with working on cars and gained valuable experience.

Couldn't really tell you... none of my relatives have any particular interest, and I was never really brought up around any of it. I guess I "started" when riding around old mopeds, cars and snowmobiles at my friends farm, although that was just fun because it went fast. My actual interest started when I got my first moped at 13 and stared toying around with it, although I was already interested in auto-stuff at that point for no apparent reason

My first car is a s13 240sx, still have it (hit 10 years ownership recently, over 140k miles driven) that set my motorhead life in stone, fuck these cars are fun with suspension and good tires.

Being from the suburbs, I've never had the means to support an expensive hobby like cars. Until I was 21, then I got a decent job. Been learning how to wrench since then.

Can't find any where I live, and acetic anhydride is hard as fuck to acquire. I can do the DNM thing but the poppy thing is cheaper and the high lasts over 20 hours as opposed to 2. I'm a legs guy, not a rush guy.

Honestly though, dextrometh wouldn't be so hard. I would need ~$200 in glassware (distillation kit + some), and a system to pump cold water through the graham reflux condenser. I have plenty of ephedrine and I know how to synth solid iodine at home... But my addy script is good enough for now, it prevents me from getting too big a tolerance.

... You don't even know. By the way that pic was from 2011 or 2012.

2 months ago I took 120mg of instant-release oxy that I personally got from the pharmacy. I didn't notice any difference at all, not even a buzz, although it delayed withdrawals. 8-10 poppies or a pound of seeds gets me high as fuck for over a day. I spend less money and get much higher for much longer than an oxy user (my $5 / day habit would be over $200 / day if oxy were my DOC). And I have to use at least every 40 hours or else shit gets real. I've been into this shit since 2009, I'm much more of a junkie than many H users. I'm not particularly proud of it but it is a good time.

>On downtime between detailing watch mechanics fix shit and get mind boner
>Decide I want to try and start fixing shit
>First thing I ever did by myself was sway bar bushings, I know small time, but it was a start
>Start doing more shit, more bushings, valve cover gasket, new headers
>Fall more and more in love
>Get promoted again to parts advisor
>Have no idea what I want to do the rest of my life and I sure as shit can't be a parts advisor for the nest 30 years

I loved cars and bikes at a very ypung age, I lived on a little lifestyle block and my dad loved to fiddle with old cars and bikes. What he made was some pretty amazing shit, even if it barely ran. My first bike was a 'chopper' style 39cc pit bike. It was slow af but 9 year old me thought it was the bees knees. We had a 70s ford falcon that we used to go on vintage car runs with. Every weekend we watched motorsport and I was around 11 when for my birthday I got a PS2 with Gran Turismo 3. I got so hooked that he started playing with me and told me how to race and how to modify the cars. We did a few projects together with some old parts and made things like go karts and paddock bashers. Since then I have surrounded myself and worshipped anything remotely related to cars and bikes.

Honestly it was Need For Speed: Most Wanted (the real Most Wanted; I'm super biased against the new one). I had gt1 as a kid until my cousin literally broke the fucking disk and despite not being able to get past the first licencing because I was 6 and didn't know about apexes I would always either hit the rock wall or fly through the finish line 0.1 - 0.3 seconds late. Most Wanted got me into the "go fast" mentality and it is still probably my favourite racing game ever (I never got to play Under Ground 2 because I never had a PS2, the only reason I got to play Most Wanted was because my other non-autistic cousin let me play it when I came over). I ended up playing Under Ground 2 a couple years ago after I tormented it because my girlfriend insisted that I should get it, so I did, and made a decent looking 240sx with a basic body kit because, despite it being UG2, i DIDNT want to rice the shit out of it. Eventually it wasn't until maybe 3 years ago (18 y/o me) that I started looking at real cars. Originally looking at Mustang GTs (same car I had in Most Wanted) but I also really liked jdm, and eventually JDM won out. I love the sound of classic muscle, but I love the look of JDM. I still haven't gotten my first car yet, and I only.have a cbr300r but I'm in school now for Automotive Technician Foundations, and within the next few weeks I'm going to be getting a 2005 Subaru WRX STi. All in all I guess it wasn't until recently I started getting into cars but I always had racing games around as a kid, so maybe that helped.
>>
No good cartoons were on one fine Sunday morning when I was like 11 years old, so I decided to see what my dad always watched on SPEED network. Ended up watching motorweek when they were reviewing the early 2000s redesigned pontiac grand prix. Watch nearly anything that isn't car crazy because those old cars were lame and they kept trying to sell me wax.

Start identifying cars on the road and watch dad work on our cars. Check out an issue of it think motor trend from the school library. Mosler MT900 vs Saleen S7. God that Mosler looked like it was some star wars shit. Kinda lost track at that point but was easily the most car-savvy guy amongst my band friends. It's a little crazy honestly. Come a long way in almost 13 years.

Freedom.
Got my first car, suddenly I was able to pretty much do whatever the fuck I wanted whenever the fuck I wanted.
For me, that was finding various roads and following them until they end or I get bored.
Eventually I started singling out routes that were challenging for various reasons
>2laner with big ditch on either side was a starter, made me nervous for a while
>moved on to a twisty uphill route, when I got bored of that practiced the downhill
>found a ~5 mile long dirt road that was seemingly put there for a farmer's convenience
I was always losing traction on it, eventually I was purposely doing it
>funny thing is, I didn't know drifting was even that big of a thing at the time, I saw it as practice for the off-chance I end up sideways in any other situation so I atleast didn't flip out more than my truck
>truck eventually breaks, get car, continue
>one day end up in Shreveport (I live in Texas so it was a pretty far trip)
>get to outlying suburbs
>at red light, mustang pulls up
>light turns green, just kinda roll off
>he revs his engine extra high and dumps the clutch
>out of instinct I give the horse it's head, shift up through the gears to 4th
>mustang is far behind
>refuses to even catch up to me, stays behind me as if embarassed

In hindsight, I'll put money on that I totally raced a guy learning a manual and thought winning was an achievement, but hey, I wasn't thinking that.

I told my buddy about it and he goes "Man I know what you need to see!"
>pulls out brand new copy of Need For Speed Carbon
>I've always been an RTS game kind of guy, skeptical
>lets me borrow it, leaves his Xbox.
>3 weeks later I'm looking at financing at Chrysler 300C

thank god I didn't go through with that.
But yeah, I sold my old Escort, started buying, fixing, and selling shitboxes.

Something like pic related but with less hellastyle is my next goal.

Friends dragged me to one of our town's annual car shows one summer, entire parking lot of walmart was filled full of gorgeous old cars of all makes, models and colors.

Was neat enough by itself but what sold me was the sound a 1970 Dodge Challenger 6.98L V8 Hemi Supercharged makes when it says hello.

I can't call it an engine note, it was Roar, like a lion asserting dominance over it's pride, even it's idle snarl shook the ground. But that fucking initial rev, that V8 scream, was the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard.

Wasn't a week before one of the walls in my room was covered in posters of classic American muscles, haven't wavered in my tastes since.

I don't know because it sure wasn't my family. My grandfather constantly talks about how I should get something cheap and reliable. No sense in having a nice car that's just going to get torn up over time. Don't even think about a motorcycle, god damn suicide machines! My dad is no better. Every vehicle I've had he makes comments like 'You aren't going to modify it are you? You should leave it the way it is. It's fine the way it is. It's already got too much power. Why would you want to do anything. I'd leave it like that. You need to keep it nice'

Fucking hell I want to smack him upside the head sometimes.

My dad. He had a few classic cars over the years that he was fond of and I remember him showing me how to play this DOS game Street Rod. I remember lying underneath a car with him when he was doing an oil change and he was showing me how. He told me he worked on cars from when he was a teenager, buying a cheap Falcon and learning how to fix it up himself. We went to watch the drag races when I was younger. I got into racing games from a fairly young age. But until I got my own car at 18 my affinity for cars was mostly just which ones I found aesthetically appealing. I learned more about maintanence and how the car works, but I've still got plenty to learn.

When I was little I like moving shit, planes, trains, automobiles and so forth, and owned a bunch of car magazines (I even bought shitty Car for stupid high prices) but then I got distracted with cartoons, video games, animals and so forth. Cars where always on the back of my mind, partly due to my mom never letting me play rated T games so racing games where the next best thing. One day I really wanted Forza 4 for some reason (never had a PS2 so I couldn't play GT), then I learned about top gear. Just binged watched that entire series and rewatched the series constantly. Even thought I can't stand them now they're what pushed me to from having a interested but unknowlagable love a cars to now me wanting to become a mechanical engineer and wanting to work in the industry, whatever that may be. Also I started reading Jalopnik (barf) and watching racing.

wanting to learn a trade is what got me into cars.
this one dude at this carwash i worked at got caught stealing cigs from behind the counter (lol)
a spot opened up, asked if i could work in the quick lube, they said yeah.
took off from there.

went from car wash quick lube, to working at a jiffy lube. after 6 months became an asst manager there, but had a desire to learn to become an actual technician. found a job at a large indy chain shop in town, put in my 2 weeks and worked there.

now in just 6 years ive gone from "i dont know how to change my air filter" to knowing A/C, alignments, suspension, many many different kinds of engines, transmissions, differentials, etc inside and out. I'm a service manager at the busiest repair shop in phoenix (look it up nigga we won awards last year) and i love what i do and what i've made for myself.
never went to a college or a tech school. learned all on the job.

my passion now lies with motorcycles. my daily is a kawasaki and for fun i bought this little 110 enduro 2squirter that i beat the shit out of, practice dank woolies, try out different jet sizes, exhaust set ups (them 2 stroke expanion chambers doe) and all the like.

i. fucking. love. engines.

Back in the 80's racing bikes would not go much beyond 120 miles and a car going 150 miles was insanely fast.

My dad works in lighting for a company that does all kinds of things ranging from concerts to conventions and trade shows. One time when I was like 11 or 12 he had a gig for the Barrett Jackson auction and he brought me along for one of the final days of work before the auction opened and we got to look at the cars before they were going to be put on the floor.

After that my interest in cars kind of fizzled out; until high school came around and I watched Initial D. That show is honestly what got me into cars.

>What got you into cars

Learning more about cars came from the desire to avoid crooked mechanics not only overcharging, but doing shoddy work or even trading their bad parts for the good ones in my car. Since most people don't insist on getting bad parts back, some mechanics might even install those replaced parts into the next customer's car or swap out that bad part for a good one. They can build up their parts stock that way.

Jalopnik, when Ghostrider and Murilee Martin were still writers there. Around '09. My brother found the comment section full of quick wit in an article he was reading, and showed it to me. We started checking out the other articles, and we kept reading there until the site did away with the hearts/starred commenting section and went full click-bait. Murilee left around the same time. Around '11 or '12.

I've got that site to blame for my love of bodging, economy cars with stupid fast engines in them, and sleeper cars. Shade tree and stuff like that...
