Wheel sizes have continuously gone up, while overall tire diameter has remianed the same. Why? Stupid design laws mandating higher and higher belt lines. For those to still look proportional, you need a bigger wheel, but you can't you add overall diameter, so manufacturers claim low profile tires are good for handling. They're just a workaround to obscure bad exterior design.
