Can a small hatchback ever be masculine, or will they always be the go-to choice for women, fags and nu-males?

No, not unless it's rally/race prepped.

if masculine = agressive, look at that

It looks kind of impotent. Like a little angry short man. I think the E87 1 series is really the only one that fits the bill here.

I drive a Fiesta because it was a hand me down.
38mpg is enough for me to not care how I look in it.
I have project cars. That's where I get enjoyment. My DD is just a means to get around.
But, no they will never be masculine.

I'm shopping for a 2002/3 civic si hatch because I think they look cooler than the coupes.

Just buy a lifted dodge ram cummins to make up for your apparent insecurities and lack of masculinity, OP.
Oh and be sure to modify it so you can blow soot out of the stacks and choke little kids with asthma and melt the glaciers a bit faster.

It really depends where you live. Here (SA), literally 50% or cars ate 1.0L hatchbacks, so noone cares if you drive one. Except the previous Citroen C3, only girls drove that.
If you're driving a tiny hatchback, you could use the "compensating" thing too.
