My E46 M3 was having problems passing smog because high VOC numbers. The smog tech told me to go home, give it a good tuneup and run some seafoam through it. I had never heard of seafoam before so he explained what it did and told me to get it at walmart. I changed the plugs, oil and seafoamed it like you see on youtube videos. Passed smog easily the next time. Runs smoother now too. Don't be afraid, just do it like the instructions say and watch the online videos. Take your time and you should be alright.

I had a bike with gunked carbs, would barely start and would only run for a few seconds. Put a mixture of 50/50 sf to gas in the bowels, ran it through till I saw smoke, shut it off, then flooded the carbs with sf and let it sit over night. Next day I drained them and ran a 30/70 half gallon through it, and after that I swear the bike runs just as good as new 20+ years ago.

I'll occasionally dump a can into my tank on my 04 Silverado. The truck is shit, keeps breaking on me (either plastic or electronics) but damn that engine runs as smooth as ever. Just done regular oil changes and everything still looks relatively new.
