Recently, when I shift to 3rd gear, I can hear a faint whiring noise but it stops as soon as I let go.
There is a fair bit of play when I put it on 3rd gear (The gear shifter moves forward a bit and makes a whiring noise if I press it forward)
But when the car is stationary, there is no noise when I put it on 3rd.
What the [SENSORED] is happening?

You have a worn out synchro
probably the dogs becoming worn out on 3rd gear or the fork.
idk, if it aint broke who cares.

This. I would start revmatching if I were you to prolong the life of it, did the same to my old car.
>>15065390
I always revmatch, even when I engine brake.
>>15065414
You aren't doing a very good job engine braking then
>>15065422
[CENSORED] you!
you probably just short shifted it once and burned it up a bit. it's not a big deal.
you can hear that whirring when you press on first gear a little while going too fast.
don't worry about it till it actually has trouble engaging.

Well shittt. Hope for the best I guess, mine has lasted years doing this. 1-3 at this point are impossible to shift into without revmatching.
There is always the possibility, depending on the synchro type, parts could go flying and chew up gears.

Sorry you can't drive m8
>>15065461
Short shifted? what's that?

Your transmission is haunted by a ghost.
>>15065555
Nice quads, strangely enough, my house is haunted by ghosts.
Welp, I just blew 550$ on a trans rebuild kit, just [CENSORED] my shit up.
>>15065525
in this context, coasting in neutral at like 50 mph or some shit and then shifted it into 3rd without rev matching first. so you go from 900rpm to 6000rpm which is hell on the synchro.

My trans has taken a fuck ton of abuse.
Having a short shifter blows, I once moneyshifted into 2nd from 5th, loud fucking rev followed by a bang.
Although it isn't going to solve your problem, buying some high end manual transmission lubricant may help get a little more life out of your transmission.
Do you know what kind of fluid your car calls for? If it calls for a GL4 rated oil, do not buy any oil that also meets GL5.
