Well, they're no longer sold in the States. This model in particular costed around $5,999 when it came out in 2008.

In Europe I can get a 2014 one for around $8,999.

I've had a job since I was twelve so before I was even out of highschool I bought a bike. Probably not what you wanted to hear but just put any money you can away. It won't take close to as long as you think it would either. One day you'll check your bank account and finally be ready to buy a shit bike. As far as gear goes: Get Helmet/ cheaper gloves/ boots (don't have to be riding boots, I've had good luck with surplus boots) and that's all you need to start. Get the rest as you go. I would recommend not falling for the pants meme and instead getting yourself a good set of knee guards of knee braces. I can personally recommend leatt (?) knee guards. I use them for commuting to work and its nice to just slip boots off, slip knee guards off, put on regular shoes I keep in my backpack and carry on without worrying about bringing a set of pants.

It's all just racing class driven when it comes to supersports. From the 70s until 2003 Superbike allowed either 750cc four cylinders or 1000cc two cylinders, so initially it was all normal 750s, then Ducati and Harley came in with twins in the late 80s/early 90s, and Aprilia, Suzuki, and Honda built homologation special twins at the end of the 90s.

When the rules went to 1000cc period suddenly the Fireblade was Honda's race bike and went to the displacement limit and the existing GSX-R1000 and R1 became the primary race bikes instead of the 750s. The theory being, if you can go flat out for 20 minutes on an MX bike you can go flat out for 45 minutes on a road bike.
