So my family has a 88 town car that they use as a nice summer/cruise car every year after storing it away for the winter. This year I'm in charge for getting it ready for the summer, and I need to know what should I check for? I was told that during the winter they would go out to the garage, start the car, and let it run for about 15-20 minutes, shift thru all the gears one at a time (while holding their foot on the brake), and revving it to around 2500-3000 rpms every couple of minutes.

I know to check engine oil, transmission fluid, tires, and brakes, but what else?

Thanks /o/
>>
>>15052889
I use windex with a couple of paper towels and it works fine for me.
>>
What kind of protective gear should I have/use when wrenching on cars? Things like jack stands, ramps, and a jack are obvious, but what else? Eye and ear protection, too?
>>
My voltage is really eratic. 1-3 gears it's fine, but going into 4th all my electrics flicker, lights etc. Oddly tho pushing my clutch in, or even just ever so lightly pressing it stabilises the voltage mostly. Also voltage jumping/flickering seems worse on bumpy/gravel roads. What could it be? The whole clutch thing affecting my voltage is really fucking with my head. Mechanic tested alternator and it tested fine. Do I need a new battery? Is my battery perhaps crossing lines into the clutch line? I don't get how this works or why the clutch would affect my voltage.

There's so much...

Pay particular attention to the cooling system since a failure there can be a show stopper. Check hoses for dry rot cracking and they should feel like a new one. If noticeably softer than that it's no good and will blow under pressure. This also includes heater hoses which are typically neglected especially those near the firewall. Also note any apparent past leakage trails from hoses, end corners of the lower intake, and bottom of the water pump. Use a strong flashlight for the inspection and get under the thing too.

Check battery cables and terminals for corrosion. That's a no-start waiting to happen. And Fords of that era used an alternator that had a double-wire plug for the high amperage output. These frequently suffered from a poor connection that would cause heat and melt the connector. Just look at that one (don't unplug it only to look) and see that it isn't heat distorted. If it is distorted fix it soon because those did cause engine fires.
>>
>>15053036
That's going to be a bad connection somewhere and since it seems to be dependent on the engine moving around I'll bet it's a ground. Either from the engine to the battery or the body to battery. Large majority of the time the problem is right there at the battery.
>>
>>15053068
Just thought about the AOD in the thing too. It uses a cable from the throttle body to modulate shifting and they originally came with a nylon bushing on the throttle arm that disintegrated after time and allowed the Throttle Valve cable to fall out of the throttle arm. That quickly resulted in a burnt up AOD. There was an update that replaced the nylon bushing with a brass one. It's probably been updated since the car has made it this far but you never know.

I checked the connections at the battery and they're both solid, couldn't get to the positive on the motor but seems okay from what I can tell. Is the negative supposed to attach to the alternator bracket like here? I thought ground had to go to body/frame?
>>
>>15053330

>forgot a bit

Could the fact that the negative is attached there be the reason for the clutch quirk? Maybe jumping through/around the motor somehow to the clutch line to make better ground? Forgive me, I'm a noob to wrenching.

>>15053330
Yes it does appear to be original and that's definitely an original cable but i still don't like it. Too many possible spots for poor connections so I'd prefer it on the block where it should be myself. Those two output terminal repair ends are completely inadequate too. At the very least the terminals should be soldered to the wire imo.

Does anybody know of a quick way to remove cardboard intake gasket material from an alloy head? It's like it's glued on there.

Does anyone know the process for getting a title for a vehicle? There's a motorcycle I'm looking at buying too fix and flip but the owner says they don't have the title, or the money to insure to get a duplicate title. How would I go about buying the bike and getting a new title in my name, or is it a stupid idea that'll just bite me in the ass later? what do you mates do to wash your car if you live at an apartment? Do you use a coin-op wash and bring your own equipment or go to an automated wash and hand dry?

>>15056112

I use the coin-op because I need the high pressure hose to spray the underside of my and engine bay, and just bring my own stuff. To wash it down completely only costs about $3, maybe another dollar or two if it's really dirty. I live in an area that has no pavement and high winds so there's always dust.

It's the only thing other than break pads that needs fixing, and he's given me pretty detailed info on the car, so I'm inclined to trust him. Will get it inspected anyway. I mean if it's the only problem and it doesn't cause any major issues it doesn't seem like a red flag to me.
>>
>>15059514
Well, you have to keep it filled up. It's just a pain in the ass and messy.

Have the mechanic give you a quote for the leak when you get it inspected.
For someone who has the tools and knows what to do it's a simple cheap fix, but the labor cost will be high if it's a input shaft seal.

Also, if it's been leaking how do we know he's kept it topped off.

what kind of welder will you need for auto body fabrication? i don't know anything about welding, but read from googling that recommended would be like 130-150amp mig welder.. so far i think it just depends how thick your welding (for amps of welder?), and that the duty cycle is how long you can weld for before having to let it cool... but i don't know the ways in what they weld etc. since i don't know anything about welding, but they said doing short burst type welding or something like that (but that method can warp the metal easy or something?).

MIG is good, flexible, and cheap. Great place to start, along with oxy/atetylene (which is not cheap)
TIG would be better if you're doing this professionally but is extremely expensive
An arc welder is the cheapest setup to operate and feed but you'll have to keep your electrodes (or sticks) in a electrode oven and it requires a bit of skill

A guy I know has a 97 Ranger. 4cyl manual trans.

Whenever it gets to operating temperature, the clutch pedal completely locks up, and nothing will get it down. It works fine before operating temperature. I've already checked for the connecting rod popping loose and getting hung up, but it's fine. We've already bled it.

He actually got it up to operating temperature and sprayed the master cylinder with a garden hose to cool it down and the clutch immediately started working again.

Test drove a Madza 3 manual transmission today, thoroughly enjoyed the car and when it came to talking numbers I told the salesmen I would only settle for 18,000$ with 0 APR financing through them and I would put down 2,000$ right now.

Salesman chuckled, I got up and left, he chased after me and I told him when he is willing to make that deal to give me a call.

Sales manager called me immediately afterwards told him I am in no rush to buy, as I am not, and to call me when he wants to make that deal.

Am I being retarded asking that low for a brand new Mazda 3 Hatchback i Touring Manual?

>Hood paint is poorly done
>bumper has been swapped from another car
>left headlight seal is punctured
>puncture caused by the crunching of the original bumper I assume
>minor ding still left at very front of driver door

Now onto the mechanical problems.
>exhaust leak (need to find where exactly, not a major problem but kind of loud)
>rough idle, rev hang.
>moderate oil leak from front left of engine block. Appears to be a valve cover seal, but didn't get to look closely.
>hood doesn't align quite right in the front, sits ever so slightly further down on the left headlight than it does on the right headlight, I assume it wasn't reseated properly after whatever wreck. Additionally, maybe the hood pinching the headlight seal is what caused it to go bad.
>vibration inside the cabin when idling.
With all of that said, here are my plans of attack

>replacing headlights later this week

>getting a mechanic to look it over tomorrow, see if they catch anything I haven't seen, or diagnose anything I've got suspicions about.

>depending on where exhaust leak is, may just slap a sleeve clamp on it and call it a day. However, depending on how long exhaust leak has gone on for, it may have killed my catalytic converter.

>according to a few car forums, the rev hanging is caused by the factory throttle body being too brittle and it doesn't open/close properly. Another thing mentioned was that the cruise control cable overlaps the throttle cable and in some cases can pinch it, causing same rev hang situation. Plan to detach CC cable, see if that fixes it. Replace throttle body with aftermarket one if not.

>focus is also known to have passenger side engine mount to fail. May cause the vibration.

Scrap it. Even if you look past all the shit you mentioned, it sounds like the car got hit pretty good in the front. You have no idea if it is in/will keep alignment, or the full extent of the structural repairs from when it was rebuilt.

You could spend months tracking down and fixing all the little shit just to find out the thing will never keep alignment and burn up a pair of tires every 10K miles. A car that rough isn't even worth the time of thinking about an engine rebuild or weeks worth of tracking down and fixing a bucket load of mechanical problems

bearings will be shot. inspect the crank and rods, see if what is meant to be round still is. see if the crank journals are scored or otherwise fucked. replace with repair size bearings and get the crank ground to match.
but rod knock might re-occur if you don't find what caused it.
>>
>>15072574
>>15072648
At the very least you will want to replace the rod in question along with the bearing. And since you already have the bottom end torn down anyways, it might be worth it to replace the crank while you're there. It's an extra cost, but fatigue damage in carbon steel is usually tough to detect even with the right equipment.

I want to take a vacation and go somewhere offroad, like, I want to reach a destination and not use a single road. Crossing roads and bridges over big rivers would be ok. I have been to offroad parks and they're fun for awhile, but I don't want to spend a whole week going over the same trails over and over.
I'd like to stay in the midwest, no moab or southern cali trips as they're a bit to far away. I'm thinking like Nashville to Atlanta, or something along those lines. City to city over a few hundred miles.

Is this possible?

My transmission started shifting really hard after I bled my brakes/clutch and replaced the master cylinder for my clutch.
It'll be almost impossible to shift when it goes over 5k RPM.
What could the problem be? Did I not bleed the clutch good enough? Could it be a motor mount?

Do you think I can drive my Truck home from work safely?
To clarify I have a 1994 s10. It has 320,000 miles on it. I was driving to work (70mile drive yes I know) and halfway is started shaking. I pulled over and checked the tires and suspension as well as I can at night beside a major freeway. There is plenty of oil and it's not.over heating. It's just only when I'm accelerating above 30mph I get shaking and it feels like the drive train /engine is fighting to accelerate. The noise is kinda like slapping. Anyway it does it randomly when accelerating but when I get to say 60mph and stay there. The shaking/noise stops. If I am rolling to a stop there is no shaking. Only happens when I accelerate. I am thinking misfiring cylinder or u joint. I just need to know if I can drive it home in the morning. Any questions I can try to answer. I've taken good care of the old.girl and don't tell me it's her time.

misfire/fueling/ignition problem, could even be a vacuum issue. does it happen when you accelerate VEEEEEEEERY slowly? or anytime youre accelerating.

a u-joint would change with vehicle speed if its while the engine is underload then its something engine related.

I own an '05 Mazda Tribute i (4 cylinder | 5 speed MT) and it currently has Firestone Destination LE2s all around. The issue is that it doesn't have Traction Control so, during wet conditions, I break traction at a stand-still while on an incline. I'm talking about 3k~ RPM so it's not like i'm over-revving like a madman.

Is there a tire /o/ recommends to help me in wet conditions? I was looking at the Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season Plus tires and the Continental Crosscontact LX20. Anyone have experience with either of these tires? Any rec's would be appreciated.

My tire's size is 235/70R16

Fix any aero issues with you car, drive within 150ft of leading cars, use lrr tires or slightly over inflate your existing ones, run minimal electrical options, don't use ac or defrost, use ethanol free gas, replace sparkplugs if they're older and so on

Would a dubious car battery affect anything?
>>
>>15077848
no
the only thing i could think of is that the battery has a huge internal leak and needs to recharge a fair amount every time you drive your car - but that would be accompanied by a lot of heat or your car not starting. moreover the amount of additional fuel used would be caused by the higher power demands of the alternator for recharging the battery which is equal to the chemical energy of the meat-bits left between your teeth after eating sausage

check for old spark plugs and oil, clogged injectors or a faulty pump

>>
>>15078799
more than you want to
less than it will cost you long term
plan 4h if you overthought it beforehands and have all the parts at hand.
also i point out that leaks can be caused by to high pressure in one of the parts: check for clogging, rust or to narrow pipes/hoses to prevent future problems
on the other hand be cautious with stepping up the diameter as it will lower flow speed and increase(!) stress in connections

I've never changed anything in the cooling system so I have no idea of the history which is why I want to replace all I can. One of the hoses has oil on the back of it that looks like it's been built up over decades.

All the hoses are right in the front of the engine and not blocked by anything so I don't think anything should stop me but I have no idea who takes used coolant and I'm sure it's illegal to pour it down the drain.

What's the best line around a circle in autocross? Literally 4 cones in a box, open entrance, open exit, can take any line you see fit.

My thoughts, either a spiral that reduces radius with as you go around. Come in wide so you don't have to brake as much. Finish really tight to the cones so you have a longer straight to accelerate out of.

Or, a constant radius circle? Just pick your steering and regulate the turn with the pedal.

How exactly do rally cars have so much torque in the low rpm ranges?
And another rally related question: How do the transmissions in these cars work? I know they're sequential, but these cars also have a clutch pedal. So does the tranny clutch automatically or something?
>>
>>15105408
>How exactly do rally cars have so much torque in the low rpm ranges?
mostly down to the anti lag allowing them to boost right off idle. the turbos are small because of the rules on restrictors
>>
>>15105408
They work pretty much like any other racing sequential out there, the clutch pedal is used only when moving from a standstill, but every subsequent shift is managed by a mix of hydraulics and electronics without ever engaging the clutch. Everything from GT cars, to prototypes to formulas have this kind of transmission and they only use the clutch when starting to move.

This is possible because the mechanism that allows the gears to engage is different than a street manual. In the latter you have synchros and many triangular shaped teeth which require a great deal of precision for them to engage (which is why you need synchros in the first place and is done because of noise and comfort) whereas racing sequential have something called dog engagement or dog rings, where teeth are lower in number, are bigger and are spaced differently from each other. This system allows for a much quicker gear engagement, but it's brutal, makes a lot of noise and vibrates like fuck, so you will never see them on Street cars.
With dog rings you literally jam the engaging collar into the next gear as soon as the gap for the teeth appears, all you need is an extremely short interruption in power delivery from the engine, possibly followed by a quick blip of the throttle if you are downshifting. This whole procedure is completely automatic nowadays so racing drivers only need to press a paddle or move a lever without ever leaving the foot from the throttle pedal. Oh, and when all this happens, the clutch is never used.

It's quite long to explain in one post, but take a look at this link which explains things way better than me

So I've got a question. If FWD cars (e.g. a Ford Focus) have the engine powering the front wheels, is there still a need for the transmission tunnel as found in a RWD car (e.g. Ford Crown Vic)? If not, then why do FWD cars use bucket seats, and not make them with bench seats and column shifters (for those who want an automatic).
>>
>>15106644
Because bench seats probably violate a few dozen safety regulations

Call me stupid or crazy or whatever but if a dirtbike could be obtained fairly cheap, would it be a viable idea to convert it to street legal with all the required lights/signals/etc. as a means of transportation? I understand the gear ratios are all for slow off-road stuff and typically off-road two stroke engines require a lot more maintenance than a traditional on-road motorcycle but all that aside could it be done?

How do you deal with people who scratch your car?

I've had it done to me twice in the past. They'd park by my car and open their door and leave a small, but noticeable scratch along with their paint on the car.

I took pictures, but when confronted they'd just play it off or no matter what just say it wasn't them.

It's really the principle of the thing that annoys me. I've heard of people who are really good at dealing with this. What do they do? It always works out for them. Do they just call the police? Or what? Is it even worth the hassle? Or do they just find honest people that tell the truth?

Battery is completely flat, will a trickle charger be able to revive it if I leave it on long enough?

It's my Alfa coming out of winter storage, apparently my dad hasn't kept the battery topped off (it's at his place because j haven't got a garage)
>>
>>15110909
Doesn't seem that bad, but if you are concerned you can always remove the seat, scrape the rust off the rail and paint it, just make sure not to paint on the part where the seat actually slides on the rail or you will end up with a pile of flaked off paint and grease in no time.
Oh, and remember to give it some grease again.
>>
>>15112432
I honestly have no desire to disassemble a power seat with airbags if I don't absolutely need to.
>>
>>15112470
Airbags are the least of your concern, disconnecting and reconnecting the airbag connector is not going to set the airbag off, even if you keep the ignition on the whole time, you literally have to intentionally provide current straight from the battery to set it off and I don't think that's a risk.
The only slightly complex thing will be detaching the motor from the rail and the moving mechanism, but it's nothing that can't be tackled with a bit of patience.

I'm sure you can find guides or even a workshop manual online to be extra safe

Anyway, that rust doesn't seem that bad, try to clean it as best as you can with the seat mounted and vacuum the rust away if you are that worried of fucking up
>>
>>15112540
>CAUTION:
>• Be sure to perform the system calibration for occupant detection system after seat installation, when the passenger seat has been removed or even one installing bolt for front passenger seat has been loosened. <Ref. to OD(diag)-12, SYSTEM CALIBRATION, OPERATION, Subaru Select Monitor.> Failure to do so may cause improper activation of passenger’s airbag.

>• Never disassemble the seat cushion frame assembly and slide rail, remove the occupant detection control module and each load cell sensor, or disconnect the harness connector, since the occupant detection control module, each load cell sensor and harness of occupant detection system (passenger’s seat only) are installed as seat frame assembly.

>• If performing the removal of backrest, read the data of load cell sensor using Subaru Select Monitor before removing seat. <Ref. to OD(diag)- 12, SENSOR DATA OUTPUT, OPERATION, Subaru Select Monitor.>

No thanks.
>>
>>15112606
It refers to the load sensor inside the seat that detects if there is a passenger on it or not, the second part you quoted tells you, obviously enough, to either disconnect the harness going to the load cells or to leave the load cells on the car and removing the rest.

What you want to do is to remove the rail from the seat, while leaving the seat untouched, there is no disassembly of the seat itself.

I understand you are worried about airbags, but your alternatives are to leave everything as they are or to remove the rails to clean them, you can't properly clean them without removing something from the car.

You can always do the job and then bring the car to a dealer so they can calibrate the system once you are done.

it would be quicker and more efficient to get it jumped, charge the battery by driving ~20 miles (~50km for u alfalfa driver), and then if you're not going to use it for a week or two either use the trickle charger to maintain charge or disconnect the battery

You lied

Outer tie rod is worn, which is something I'll accept... BUT, the bullshit was that I also got points on my indicators (ALL OF THEM) not being orange enough because the bulbs were flaked

I then proceeded to remove all the bulbs to inspect. The two on the side had lost quite a bit of their color, so those are replaced, but the two in the front and the two in the back were all completely fine, with no signs of fading, cracking or flaking at all. Talked to the guy who is in charge of everyhing mechanical that goes on there, and he said he would have a chat with the guy who did the MOT
>>
>>15120274

More like beta romeo. What could I be doing wrong? With that car it just doesn't slow down at all when downshifting. There's no difference between trying to force it to engine brake, and letting off the gas and letting it slow down by itself.
>>
>>15121128
Different engines have different amounts of engine braking capabilities. It depends on a number of factors (engine internals, gearing, weight of the car to name a few) so it's entirely possible you are not doing anything wrong, one car just slows down faster than the other.

Had the inspection been failed due to only the bulbs I would have complained and gotten it rechecked by someone else, but since the tie rod was included then I'll let it slide.

I'm smart enough to get mine early, so I still got a bit over a month to get all the stuff fixed. Gotten some new, darker bulbs and replaced them, and I've ordered tie rods. When I go back they'll check to see if those issues have been fixed, and then I'll get the inspection passed.

Its a busy garage so they'll never fix problems immediately like that, especially if they dont have parts

So I was just curious as to why small diesel cars/trucks use vacuum brake boosters? It doesn't make sense from a cost perspective since you have an engine that doesn't produce vacuum so you need to add a vacuum pump for the sole purpose of operating the brake booster. I then learnt today that hydraulic boosters do indeed exist readily. So why the hell aren't we using them?

check the drain line for the AC, they are good at getting tangled up in sticks you run over and getting ripped off. the can find its way all over the engine bay from the turbulence, had the same thing happen on my car where it was pouring into the frame, traveling to the front of the engine bay then being sucked up and sprayed everywhere by the radiator fan, almost replaced a rad because of that.

Does anyone have the shooped picture of a ford(?) with the giant body panels and tiny windows?

Only with the tow package unless later models had it standard.

When I first start (seemingly before the engine warms up), it's hard to shift into second gear. It almost always requires grinding/forcing. Once the engine is warm, though, it shifts just as smoothly as any other gear. It's a 1981 BMW E21 if that helps, any ideas?

My oil change is due but I'm going to leave my car parked for about 8 months starting next week. Should I do the oil change before leaving it or when I start driving it again?

Also what other things should I do to it other than putting a cover on it and no gas in the tank?

Thanks for trying, but it's the one where it's mocking modern car design trends. IE how everything is shaped like a soap box.

Leave the oil, change it before you drive again. Put the car on jackstands unless you like flatspots on your tires. Spray your tires with armorall or whatever the fuck it's called.

How do I buy a car that's not a shitbox if I have no credit?

I'm 20, have plenty in savings, and have worked since 14... But I don't have a credit card and I've never financed anything. I wanted to great myself with a Fiesta ST, but dealerships won't even touch me.

How am I supposed to do that?

I don't want a credit card, and I don't want to get caught in a shitty high interest loan. My locals gun store has financing offers, and the only thing I like more than boats and cars is guns.

sounds like you are doomed to a life of disappointment

Buy gun, go to dealership with said gun, change their mind on the finance issue.
