Racing and performance heritage is important in the way cars are perceived.
Your friend wrongly assumed that a new M4 would be at the same level as the legendary E39 M5 or any number of M3s. Sadly BMW has totally dropped the ball these last few years, especially with their M card, and their competition has caught up with them. Your friend's M4 is far from slow, but it's not much faster than an M2, Camaro SS, Cayman S, ATS-V coupe, or Shelby GT350, all of which are cheaper and probably more fun to drive.

My friend got a new 3 series loaner while his E90 was in the shop, he said pretty much the same thing. Terrible turbo lag, shitty steering feel that was too light and vague and the car felt much larger than his. He said if he was to drive it without knowing what it was he wouldn't have thought it was a BMW.

I really don't like how the M3 looks compared to the M4. I hardly ever have more than two people in the car and we just take the wife's car if we need to bring the dog somewhere. Basically just extra weight for me.

M4 certainly isn't a perfect car, but I'm still happy with my purchase. I was thinking of trading it in for a M2 or a new Cayman but I think I'll just hold on to it for the time being.

If you want an enthusiast car buy a caterham, a lotus, etc. BMWs target customer group for ///M cars are 30+ year old businessmen who need a luxury DD they can also take on the track and don't bother spending 100k on. BMW is well aware of that, that's why the cars are so fucking expensive. Nobody in their right mind with 100k spare would spend the money on some cheap-ass, fake-leather, non-luxury, lolcantturn American lanbarge only because it's 0.00000002 seconds faster on one track in the US. It's about decent luxury neither a camaro, nor a mustang, nor a viper, nor a corvette can offer. So maybe y'all need to chill and stop being so incredibly autistic over a lap time.

Global sales of the ATS achieved in excess of 46,000 in 2014 and were up another 36% (!) the following year. Meanwhile the Global combined sales for the 3- and 4-Series were down (-1.2%) from 2014 to 2015. Lexus has yet to post Global sales for individual models, but they did share a year-over-year growth of 12% in 2015 while BMW as a brand only showed a 1.8% increase.

The point is that BMW is losing ground to its competitors (Lexus and Cadillac) which show better year-over-year trends.
