To those in the know, what would be more cost effective. Regearing my Dana 60 to 3.83 or 9 inch swap? Drag racing in a street strip build would be the long-term goal

Buy any old Crown Victoria and drop the truck on the vic frame, it's a popular swap.

I know. I'm torn because I prefer the 4-door, but '65 is my favorite year. To get either car, I'd have to sell my Cadillac; due to space, and it would need to be able to be driven back from Phoenix to Houston; if I can get someone to inspect either car, I'd fly out there and drive either one back in a heartbeat.

Also btw guys, my jeep is making a lot of clunking noises. Especially when I first get going or make a turn, it goes clunk-clunk-clunk-clunkclunkclunkclunk as I pick up speed. Alternatively, "thump." Is this my u-joints? I was going to replace all my bushings this summer as well.
>>
>>15033517
Rockauto is going to be your best bet. Should be about $200 and whatever for shipping. Your other options are patch it if possible or junkyard it. There are quite a few compatible Fords you can pull parts from. If you patch it for fucks sake pressure test that bitch long and hard, and even then keep your fingers crossed. I got lucky.

Have you guys ever gotten a trip slip from the DMV? What is the process?

Is it:
>go to DMV
>Wait 5 hours
>Get a trip slip for 1 day
>Go home
>Day is over, trip slip no longer valid

I need to drive my car to a frame shop about 3-5 miles away to see if they can fix my crashed frame. Car will not have a hood in place, and might catch some attention.

So I need /ccg/'s help.
There is a 1966 chevelle near me that I want.
Dude's asking $4,500 and I have it, but I was just given a truck by my father, and there are issues with the car.
The issues are mostly comfort and cosmetic - the interior is trashed (looks like someone ripped it out), the front suspension needs Jeebus, the body has random dings, and the paint is half done.
All in all, to get it fixed (short of dings and paint) I would be set back $2,000-3,000
Should I get it and grow my fleet/ flip it?

I took some more pictures than this one, and here is the CL for it.

https://stockton.craigslist.org/cto/5578015897.html
>>
>>15038170
I hate demo derbies with a passion. The sheer number of beautiful cars that they have destroyed is a crime. Nobody who enjoys them can call themselves a car enthusiast.
>>
>>15038186
You can see said gift truck in the back, it's an 01 silverado 2500hd 4x4. The gas mileage between the two autos will be comparable, so that really isn't an issue.
Budget for a new car would be around $5,500

The powerglide transmission SUCKS. They are some of the most soul-crushing automatics ever made; if you can live with that, they ARE robust.

Interior work is costly; to get that nice, you're looking at $4k to $5k, but that can be done slowly.

If you're proficient in mechanical work, expect about $1,500.00 in suspension/steering work. All signs pointed to an idiot owning this car who tried to live out his boy racer fantasies. Every bit of rubber in the suspension and steering will have to be replaced, as well as the joints; anticipate servicing the rear end and replacing all the body mounts as well.

If you can work on it yourself, don't mind a non-stock restoration, you MIGHT be able to get it done for close to $4k. If you will have to pay someone to do it, expect to spend close to $15k to have it restored and made reliable; BEFORE paint and body work.
>>
>>15038186
Keep the truck.

I'd say go for it if it wasn't a four door.

>>
>>15038256
I like four doors :)
I'm a fat guy, who likes fat chicks, and the sedans are always a couple of grand cheaper at comparable quality levels.
>>
>>15038210
I don't believe in the creation of senseless laws; though, it amazes me that people can actually destroy such beautiful cars. It's a crime against nature and the car hobby.

Though, if there were a proposed law to ban all vehicles over 25 years of age from being included in demo derbies, I would support that. If we have to preserve crappy buildings and gay bars as a part of our collective history, then we can surely protect classic cars.

I was doing bodywork the other day and spotted a bubble in the paint behind the back wheel on the driver's side quarter panel, the usual rust spots. I went to check the other quarter on the passenger side to see if there was any damage there and it was spotless, came back and realized that the body lines didn't even match.

The bottom of the quarter is supposed to taper inwards but it was just perfectly round, I started to think that my quarter panel was literally swiss cheese underneath the quarter inch of bondo (which was soft as fuck) and it wasn't, just clean sheetmetal. I started working towards the wheel well and I realized that they actually fucking welded in a fender lip where it WOULD be and it stuck out about a half inch, that sheet metal that I found was just a patch panel the PO made up and zeus'd on there.

I think they just used the chrome trim that goes around the wheel well, mocked up some sheet metal with it and welded it in place and filled in that xbox heug gap with bondo.

That's exactly it. It's a D30 front with locking hubs and D44 rear. It's also already got an SOA conversion, and even an aftermarket 24gal fuel tank. The tires (35's) have less than 50 miles on them and have never seen dirt.

It comes with a cage too, so I'll take the hardtop off in the summer and make a bikini top for it. I'm going for a rig like pic related.

If it is Quadratrac equipped it should have a BW 13-39 TC I believe. Most of them had AMC20 rears, with a different offset on the pumpkin.
Axles are one of the first thing to be swapped anyway. Nice jeep man.
>>
>>15042710
I'll have to double check when I go back to it. My axle ID skills are weak. I don't plan on wheeling it hard enough to break axle shafts anyway.

All I really need to do to run it is bolt in some bucket seats and put fuel in it. It has some pretty ghetto wiring to fix too.

Then I just need to weld in some rifle racks, ammo cans, a bracket for a small toolbox and jerrycan, and a winch plate onto that custom bumper. Red Dawn fantasies, here I come

Yeah I hear you, I'd be on the fence too, looks pretty killer right now and usually it just isn't worth it to dick around painting a bush beater, even if it is a unique classic. I've been on the fence about re-painting my Scottsdale for a year now, but I'd ruin the paint job within a couple of months rippin' around in the mountains. After a while the dents and scratches along the body become tied to great stories anyway, hard to paint over em.

Read the thread and I would say overbore but do not stroke it. You already are dealing with a 3.58" stroke and for what you are spending to have the block clearanced and buying a stroker crank, you could have a 400 and make a ton more power. If you stick with the 360, get a good set of aluminum heads with a runner capacity of 170-200 cc or you will lose all kinds of power. On every LA I've touched, a good set of headers, full exhaust, a mid rise intake, and a solid new or rebuilt 600cfm 4bbl will jump you about 50 horses, more on a smogged block.

What are your power goals and the purpose of the car? Street with light strip use? Road warrior with a mild cam? Full potato?

Mostly just a weekend warrior. Streets here are mint and fun to drive on, but even a de-smogged 360 lacks power in my heavy Cordoba. I already have headers, an intake and carb in my shopping cart and I'm looking into cheap ways to make a little more power than just that. Shooting for 450 or so HP. Anything more is just going to overpower the car's handling if I don't invest in serious upgrades.

I know a guy who could do the clearance work for almost nothing.
>>
Where should I be sourcing a 351w from?

Looking to make maybe 400 rwhp, street build. Would prefer to find it with an AOD for the cruise comfort. I don't want to spend 6k on a crate engine. Pls send help.

If the guy will do it cheap, go ahead and stroke it. Pick up a full hydraulic roller retrofit kit from Crane and get a more aggressive bumpstick. Pair that with double beehive springs and roller rockers and you will be at 450 in no time.
>>
>>15047174
During the late 80s and early 90s, Ford was installing roller lifters at the factory on some 351W engines, so I suggest you get one of those.
>>
>>15048493

What's the torque gain from stroking it compared to different options?
>>
>>15048493
And I remember you from previous threads. A 360 build for 450hp, depending on where you want the power, will require a new flexplate and torque converter which is accessible when you pull the engine. Go for somewhere between a 2300-2800 stall, anymore than that and you will feel the lag in a very apparent manner. My suggestions:

Indy 360-1 63cc Heads with 180CC runners
Edelbrock Performer RPM 360 intake
Carter AVS (Edelbrock) 600cfm carb (vacuum secondaries are easier on a street car, I like mechanical secondaries)
Heddman longtube headers
KB .040 over pistons
Eagle rods
Crane hyd roller somewhere in the .500-.540 lift with a 108-110 lobe separation and a decently long duration.

I'd also recommend full main and head studs and ARP rod bolts for added durability, though at 450 hp the main studs are overkill.
>>
>>15048597
Depends on if everything else is equal. All else remaining the same and just stroking it maybe 10-15% gain max. But that's like saying just a carburetor swap what'll it do? Very little even with a manifold swap you may pick up 20hp due to head flow limits on smog LAs. If you do it as a full build, you will get to your number, but build around your displacement and headflow numbers not off what a site says a cam can make. I CAN make 700hp NA if I run 12:1 compression with a huge cam, but its pointless as the rest of the engine would have to be built around that power goal and would reduce my reliability and street use and the block, heads, carb, etc would have to compliment it in a way that's streetable.

Yeah I know about the flexplate and torque converter. I'm just looking into things and what would work for me before I pull the engine for a considerable amount of time (and money).
This is why I really only planned on buying the bolt ons like intake, carb and exhaust for now. Relatively easy and not too overwhelming for a moron like me.
Engines are rather complicated and I just started learning about building them.

The only major thing I ever did to an engine thus far is install an exhaust system on my 50cc bike and tune the carb for the exhaust.
I should have gotten into automotive mechanics instead of general mechanics.

Pic related is what I usually can work on. Doesn't look very easy, but I can understand it better than an engine.

Actually if anyone's interested, I'm uploading a video of that rolling mill. It's a classic too, just not a car, but I figure it'll be nice enough to show.
>>
>>15048782
It's very welcome. What sort of mill do you work in?

As for your bolt ons, heads are easy enough to swap so if you have the cash, they will be a worthwhile upgrade just for the increased flow even if you don't do a rotating assembly and cam. Switching from 1.5 to 1.6 ratio rockers will give you a power bump as well as it increases lift by leverage as opposed to taller lobes and will be available on those Indy heads. Too bad you don't have an RB as the performance bits can be had for about 1/2-2/3 the price of an LA part from one specialty shop that only deals in 400s and 440s. Either way, aluminum heads are never a bad upgrade and can be reused as long as they aren't corroded terribly or warped (Indy heads are coated against the corrosion btw). What sort of a power band do you want and how far down a tach do you want it to rev to reliably?

Sorta thing I've been looking at actually, but mini's cost a lot here. I found a good condition one that I can reach for about £4,750. There's a Minor nearby for 3500. So the price is a little odd.

Sprites are priced decently, but are quite far away. There's a Triumph Spitfire for around 3,300 though. And it's apparently in solid condition.

I'm interested in a car, but I'm not too sure on whether or not I should get rid of my Cadillac for it. It's a 1969 Lincoln Continental with 60k miles; currently not running, but the seller claims it needs only a new battery, some fresh gas, and the brakes redone to be road ready.

He wants close to $5k or it, but '69 is my least favorite of these Continentals. Plus, if I buy it, I'd have to forego my search for an Imperial.

Thoughts?

Sounds like boomer motive just needing a battery and gas. I'd say hold off for the Imperial
>>
>>15055821
How bad is it and where are you? If all you care about is getting it restored, I can promise you that I'd fix it if it's within my abilities.
>>
>>15055833

I'm in Dayton, Ohio. Needs new brakes and brake lines, new fuel lines, interior needs some work, electronics need some work (previous boomer owner had a fucking ham radio nigger rigged up to it or some shit), needs to be de-rusted, but from the photos that I have posted here no one said the rust was terminal (yet) or too bad.

I'd say that it pretty much needs a ground up restoration, but to get it on the road you'd need brakes, new fuel/oil/coolant, battery (or maybe just a jump), and that should be it. i've driven the thing before when i first got it and it seemed to be okay, but i honestly can't say HOW okay it is; i haven't had the engine or transmission apart. the transmission definitely seemed to hate it's life but maybe it just needs new fluid too, actually.

i paid $3,000 for it. the owner is the son of the original owner. the guy drove it all through high school and college, then his dad took ownership of it again and used it until he died, then it sat outside under a car cover for like 4-5 years. it sits in a garage right now and has since i bought it like 3 years ago. the plan of course was to fix it but like 2 months after i bought it i lost my house and my job and while i'm doing way better right now, i can't yet swing the costs to fix it up.

i will dump some pictures of it so you can all laugh at me because i genuinely deserve it.
>>
>>15055891
Ohio, huh? Well, if the pictures look OK, I could have it shipped to Wisconsin and have my father store it for a year until I move, THEN I could fix it up, but I'd probably only be able to offer you around $500.00.

It's not the type of car I normally work on, which intrigues me, and I'd love to restore it to keep some boomer from making a GTO clone out of it.

i feel so bad about the condition of the car that i honestly don't know if you're joking with me or not and i've tried to follow your posts as much as possible for years.

is it genuinely not THAT bad? i can't afford to do much of anything with it right now and i don't want to sell it, but that really is the best thing to do right now. it needs to go to someone that will work on it.
>>
>>15056140
It's not in bad shape at all; I see what looks like a little patch work needed on the frame rails, but it's in comparable shape to the Cadillac that I'm daily driving; your car is actually nicer inside.

If you don't need the money, let it sit a bit longer and fix it when you can. Just keep it on a nice, dry area. If you get rid of it now, when you have the means to restore it, you'll hate yourself.

>>
>>15056288
That's a great storage facility.

First When you can, change all the fluids and get the car to run off of a 5-gallon fuel can. After that, replace the tank and fuel lines, then fix the brakes. Once you get the car running and driving again, it acts as its own motivation to keep you on track.

This is a video of me bypassing the tank on a car that I was working on; the engine was locked up like a rock and, after I got it running, I used the gas can in lieu of a tank to keep the car running while I tended to the brakes and diagnosed that horrible valve noise.

If the pictures are recent that's not bad at all anon. Hell, the Fury was worse than that once I started doing panel work and had 0 paint on it. If it reall just need fuel lines, a tank, brake lines, etc (general 50 year old maintenance shit) I wouldn't sell it for under what Dracula said. It's above and beyond most vehicles in the rust belt from my experience and looks like it had been under coated at some point. I'd swap wheels, fix the lines, new fluids and drive the bitch. It's clean as shit on the inside and if the top isn't rotted and torn, that's easily sell for 3500-5000 as it sits if it turns over where I live in the STL metro.

Do what you can, bit by bit, and look for used parts on Craigslist or in junk yards to try to keep prices down.

The undercoating has me a little concerned about frame rust; as I've seen some where it did more harm than good, but the body looks great.

oh yeah one of the hood hinges is fucked up or some shit and the hood doesn't sit perfectly. driver's side door sags when open so to close it you have to lift then close. windows don't align perfectly with the hood.

i honestly forgot about that shit. is that possible frame damage? i've been under the car a lot and it seems fine (aside from the rust) but i don't fucking know
>>
>>15056915
Hood is adjustable due to manufacturing variances. The door sagging is weak metal or a bad hinge. You can most likely use spacers to help lift it up a tad. Idk what you are talking about the windows not lining up with the hood unless you mean the windshield.

>>
>>15056984
If the windows are manual (and some primitive power options) there is an adjustment to the lift mechanism inside the door to raise it up and down. The drivers window on the Plymouth would drop into the door and barely go full height. 2 bolts and a bit of tapping later and it fully seals and no more window drop.

It'll depends on how handy you are with cars. If you can deal with the problems that occasionally popup and realize that you have to do more maintenance than just oil changes, go for it.
If however you don't know how or never worked on cars I wouldn't recommend it, unless your father or a friend can help you out when you run into trouble.

1970s brand of choice; they're cheaper, often in better shape, have a few more modern features, and you're far less likely to run into the need for specialty parts costs.

Otherwise, if you want specific vehicle recommendations, tell me your budget, the largest metro city, brand of choice, and how you intend to use the car.

The early '70s were still good; plus, he wants a car to learn with. If you tell someone to go out and buy a $7,000.00 muscle car and it's constantly breaking, it's going to deplete their budget a lot quicker. If he doesn't like the '70s car, he can sell it, lose no money, and be wiser for trying.

Anyone have any recommendations for a set of heads for a 71 mopar 360LA? I have a low rise edlebrock intake and an edlebrock 4bbl.

I wanna stick to a low to mid range rpm horsepower peak. I'm gonna be getting a camshaft that reflects this when I get the heads, if anyone has a suggestion for a camshaft too that would be good.
I'm thinking of getting the baja power cam that was described as a stump puller, it's rpm range was around 1500 to 4750ish. But it maxes out at 5200 rpm with I thought might be too low.
>>
>>15063113
Look above and get Indy 360-1 heads. Having never hear of that cam, id look at a Crane hyd flat tappet if you have a tight budget, but a hyd roller retrofit is a much better choice overall. 5250 for an LA is a tad low for a pre smog engine and should redline closer to 6000-6200. If you are wanting low down grunt you are in the right mindset with your cam, but I trust Crane and have for years. If you give me some more specs, I can help suggest a cam a bit more accurately for you.

Do you have or plan to have
Headers and what type
Overbore
Which mid rise intake
What carburetor
What rear end gear and open or SG.

I got the edelbrock performer 2176K and the edelbrock performer 1406K 600cfm 4bbl carb.
So it's not a super beefy carb but it's basically perfect for my engine size. I have stock exhaust manifolds (I was told by the C Body forum that they were pretty solid and likely better then a lot of the aftermarket manifolds, I guess because my car is a Sport Fury?)

I've got the unfortunate 8 1/4 rear end, which I'd like to change out someday, and my car is still running stock bore. It's basically all stock aside from carb and intake and the 2.25 inch dual exhuast.

>>
>>15063288
The C Body forums are close to right, but only if you are sticking with shorty headers. Long tube or midis will make a difference down low especially coming from even HP manifolds.

As for a cam, look at the Crane Z-276-2 for a flat tappet or HR-222/339-2S-12 IG for a hydro roller. Both will have affair idle and make power up to about 5200 and 6000 RPM respectively.. These days, I always go hud roller even with the cost as it makes for a much better daily and means you do not need a zinc additive. Comp Cams also has a couple good offerings as well (20-212-2 flat apps and 20-810-9 hid roller) and cost about the same. Either way you go, get beehive springs for the heads as they will easily handle the added lift and help resist valve float (common when going above .500 lift on a SBM or BBM with stock valve springs)

For heads, the Indy 360-1s are a good buy or the Mopar performance P5153849s as they come with updated valve springs that can hand up to .550 lift comfortably as cast. The intake runners are about 171cc on the MP heads meaning good street performance and throttle response off idle. Id look at swapping the intake with an Edelbrock 7176 as it is one of the best street intakes made for the LA series, but the carb is more than sufficient for your application.

And don't bash that 8.25 too much, they can handle up to around 450 horses before getting into too much trouble, but the 8.75 is a much beefier rear end and I prefer the drop out style rears as opposed to the spicer style for a street car because rear end swaps are simple and fast. Do you have an A904 behind that 360 or the A727? If it is the latter, you are good to about 550 hp before you need to think about beefing it much, but know the rear end will go, then the shift sprag, then your driveshaft most likely. If you need other options or want some forward looking upgrades, lemme know.
>>
>>15063370
No. They also use the magnum intake rots and that is inferior to the 63 cc loaded MP heads in every way. Don't buy cheap head castings or you will regret it when it is time to bolt them on. And make sure you do a full wipe down and clean of ALL new parts before installation as tree will be some metallic dust from machining present that you do not want in your engine.
>>
>>15063457
Thanks Furybro, by the way what's a Hud roller?

And will the intake I've got really hold my car back that much?

I'm probably gonna go with the mopar performance heads, I can't really figure out what's going on with the indy 360-1s website order form pdf. Is there a big difference in price?

Also I'm nearly 95% sure I've got the A727 but I haven't actually confirmed it. I'll be changing the tranny fluid soon and then I'll know for sure based on the gasket shape.

The indus are about 150 more expensive but have a larger machined runner at 180cc and I believe beehive valve springs as well. a Hud roller is a Hydraulic roller camshaft that was a typo. And your intake will reduce the top end of your power band because it will be your flow restriction. As a rule, your intake manifold should be ported to head and meet or exceed its flow rate so that your heads, not the intake, restrict the power. It makes for better mid and top end power as well and I wish I could find the flow charts I had.. looking now.
>>
>>15063566
Thanks, wish I'd known that before I bought it. How much money is the intake you recommended.

Hah I already got pretty much my entire next tax return spent.
>>
>>15063401
No idea really, I bought it a year ago at an auction and havent looked it up, but its most likely been imported after the 2000s
>>
>>15063590
Its right at 312.20 from nearly everyone at the moment. Very worthwhile intake and also has a mini air gap for better atomization and less heat transfer. All that adds up to better drivability and more power.
>>
>>15063592
Very cool. How much did you end up paying for it out there? I always assume american classics are always pricey outside the States.
>>
>>15030339

This is beyond shitbox, this is stupid. Fix it you fucking slob.

Does anyone have experience re-wiring their classic? I don't have much experience with wiring but it's a 65 f100 so I didn't think it would be that hard. How long would a job like this take? I will probably have a friend to help.
>>
>>15064368
On that truck, it'd take an afternoon; less if you buy a pre-made harness.

It's a tedious job under the dash, running the wires for the tail lights, fuel sender, and a few other components, but it's not bad.
>>
>>15064435
Doesn't seem too bad but I have heard the dash will be the hardest part. Finding the time to do it will be tough
>>
>>15064435
Nice part f the 65 though is you don't have anything blocking the lower dash. Bad part is you can Hotwire it without ripping anything out

Anyone in the Fayetteville, NC area? I found another car that I'm interested in if they'd come down to around $4,500.00

Me and my coworker both have one weekend left to get our respective cars done in time for our deadlines, both ofare busy next weekend. He's got a shit ton of wiring, air lines, exhaust and other little things to get done on his 1969 Continental so he can take it to Carlisle. And I have to finish the repaint on my 1973 military Land Rover series III to have it ready for the British car show in Clinton, NJ.

And there are new wheels for the Continental before anyone complains.

Picked up a super solid fully loaded 89 Town car the other day. That brings us up to 23 cars currently at my house and the 10th or so panther I've owned. For fucks sake.

>>15066206
Literally comfy, the house

It is, but it's also a full time job just taking care of the place. Sometimes I really wish I was a NEET living in some shit hole apartment who's biggest concern was what to fap to tonight.

The rust doesn't look too bad and can easily be sand blasted off or dipped in a bath. Then powder coat or enamel paint for protection. The only rust that concerns me would be that picture new the shocks. The rust on the drive train will go away if you upgrade those parts.

these are photos from when i first bought it, i'm not nearly stupid to buy a 39 year old van with just a tad (used sarcastically) of rust and not drive with the dog house on. when it needs moved the doghouse goes back on, when it needs work it comes off. pic related, the terrible ass cancer rust she has at the moment

I found another one; but it's got classic boomer "I know what I got" subtext underpinning the entire ad:

https://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/5587931168.html

>swapped motor
>missing headliner
>Torn seat corner/cracked rear seat

It's about a $6.5k car.
