Easier to control a rear tire skid on those things than it is to bring the back wheel up. Break too hard on the front end and you'll wind up on the ground a lot faster due to weight distribution.

I was a motorcycle owner for 30 minutes and it felt amazing. I purchased a 2000 Honda CBR600 for $1800 and it ran great but once it hit 70mph it started decelerating until it stopped. I almost got my friend killed (he went with me to pick it up and drive it since I don't know how to drive one). Got my cash back though. The owner seemed genuine and really didn't know the motorcycle had problems.
Looking forward to actually buying a motorcycle that works one of these days ;-;

I will say the same thing I said last time, all the information out there to learn how to ride "well" or "proficiently" is out there for free.

It is up to you as a rider to seize the opportunity and practice and learn all you can, the fact that people don't and just go along happy go lucky fine with how they ride like homie here (who then pats himself on the back for "breaking in time" which would just make it even harder to push that bar a few mm further down and just complete the corner) bothers me.

I mean so not only has this dude crashed due to sheer incompetence and lack of knowledge on how to ride, he then makes excuses for it later.

I've never seen somebody so dedicated to NOT learn from your mistakes, most people who crash think about what they did wrong, this guy doesn't even think he did anything wrong.

EFI is better for cold starting and making max power at altitude. Other than that it's pretty much personal preference. If regularly used carbs are not unreliable. EFI is still prone to gumming up injectors if left to sit with ethanol fuel in them.

This just doesn't happen in reality. Store a carbed bike long term without running the fuel lines dry and you will 100% be in for a bad time. I've had cars sit for years without so much as an injector issue. And with EFI altitude changes are a non-issue and you will make more power/efficiency regardless of elevation.

Not that I even care about wheelies but my KLR is not difficult to wheelie at all.

I never bought a KLR for HP numbers or super light weight. I bought it because I live in a barracks and don't have access to a garage. I needed a bike that I would almost never have to work on aside from normal maintenance, and that's exactly what I got.

I can crunch miles comfortably to get to offroad trails, keep up just fine when I get there, and carry all the shit I could ever want to camp out for days.

If I want to go fast I'll ride a sport bike, or a dirt bike in the dirt, but that's not what I want. I want a machine that will take me anywhere I want comfortably and cheaply.

You do you boo boo I just wanna listen to CCR, mosey around on dirt trails, and sleep under the stars.

lol I swear I said the exact same thing about ego on /dbt/ too, you can't ride with an ego because egos can be bruised and logic will be thrown out of the window to protect your stupid feelings.

Ego is also how people end out raging at car drivers and fuck themselves up, it's like the worst thing you could possibly have while riding on the road.

Do fairings offer any real benefit, or just cosmetic and limited protection in collisions and weathers?

Wind blast, from smeone who rides a naked bike every day yes there is a difference.

Also if it was factory built as a street fighter it likely is geared for more torque and lower top speed. your average 600 sportbike can just blow by most stock naked bikes a the high end. they really excel at lower end and acceleration though.

Trust me I considered all the cheap 650 options but I love my fairings, I love my wide seat, and to obtain all of those touring farkles for the dr it just ends up costing even more. The KLR is just a perfect blend of offroad and on road comfort for me. It may not be for everyone else but the whole reason more than one motorcycle exists is because people aren't all the same.

Thanks for critiquing my carefully thought out, researched, and planned decision to get a KLR though you've definitely affected how well I'm going to sleep tonight.

the pressure bleeds off why do you think your fuel pump runs and injectors prime before starting an EFI vehicle? and you 100% are wrong about the fuel tank, they are vented just like a back with pressure and vacuum relief. there is no one way valve. gasoline changes volume way too much with temperature chages with a super low and variable vapor pressure for that to be possible. even gas cans are vented for this reason. if your fuel tank only had over pressure relief your cars tank would collapse inward on itself during the night after driving on a hot day

>>

>I don't know what that means
Think of it this way,

2 stroke engines are simpler engines that make power every other stroke. 4 strokes have more parts and make power every 4th stroke. So basically, a 500cc 2-stroke is basically twice as powerful as a 500cc 4 stroke while being lighter.

So 2 smokes have more power everywhere. The drawback to this, of course, is wear and fuel economy.

Vancouver area has 4 classes:

400cc and under - insurance is like $20 a month
750cc or less - insurance is like $80 a month
1000cc or less - insurance is like $150 a month
Over 1000cc - I cannot afford this insurance

Also depends on driving record and age.

I'm a mechanical engineer at tank farms. Didn't know there was an anon on keene too, I actually live across the street from the uptown in richland.
>I break so many laws on those roads after dark.
By far one of the best local places to rip around. You wouldn't have happened to be the guy who went through the construction zone at 120 and wound up on the news were you? Apparently those roadside speed display boards log speeds, who would have known.

Wind is mostly psychological, anon. On a straight line it might slightly push you to one side of a lane if you make no effort to combat it, but it doesn't really affect the bike. What it has an impact on is your mental state. The noise of it hitting your helmet, and the feeling of it beating against your chest and helmet is what mentally fatigues you and makes you nervous.
After you've been in high winds a few times you no longer care. Ride through a hurricane and never give a fuck.
Stay safe though, nigga.

Honestly its the blowing dust and other drives that is the scarier part. The dust can cut visibility and does fuck with your mind when you see the wind's eddies and currents. Also it gets in your eyes/mouth/nose if its coming from the wrong angle.

When its just windy it can be fun... unless its a fucking headwind. My little bike already struggles with my fatass on the freeway, it a strong headwind its terrible.

actually, body position is a perfectly cromulent point, I bring it up in one of my multiple part posts here

>>14995899

>COUNTER-LEANING, bikes turn harder when they're leaned over more at low speed, simple right? How can you get the bike leaned over more then when you're going a walking pace then? counter lean!

>do the opposite of what you've been told about body position and sit on the left side of the seat (as you're going to do your right handed turn) and lean AWAY from the direction you're turning, this tilts your bike further down for the same speed and will make it turn in a smaller radius when you're on full lock.

As much as I love getting my lean on, pulling throttle and hearing my own exhaust as I rip wide open seriously gives me a boner.

I live and work in an area without many interesting roads. The downside is though that there aren't any extended straights. I can't get my throttle on for any real duration before a turn, but there aren't enough turns to keep it interesting either.
During summer around the lake here the roads are so clogged with traffic that even going the speed limit is out of the question. Riding slow and brapping at bitches lost its appeal super quick. I'd rather just ride.

I would rather have the matte green shell but I can't find any on sale for my size.

I'm trying to figure out which color/graphic would look best but considering I ride a black cbr250r and wear an orange textile jacket and glove I don't think I'm going to get away without looking somewhat clownish. I am liking the blue graphic in the link though.

Pretty badly.

Engine braking is merely using the compression of the engine to slow down (i.e. closing the throttle and letting the engine do its thing).

Over-revving can have catastrophic results like bent valves, for instance.

Usually it's pretty obvious if your shit's all fucked up though.

My tach maxes out at 12k. Redline starts at 10.5k. I think I may have done that and nigg'd it to something like 13k or 14k maybe twice for a duration of 3-5 seconds. There's a spot on my favorite course to ride where it just makes sense to do that.

It occurred to me that that might be a bad idea when I noticed my single-cylinder engine skip a beat at a stop sign. That only happened once. Didn't do anything outrageous for another 25 miles and it feels and sounds fine.

I would be shattered if I blew up my little CBR.

Downshift overrev is like the one way to instantly grenade a modern engine with a manual gearbox, yes.

Mind you most bikes would probably drop you from rear brake lock up before you catastrophically destroyed them but the red line and the limiter are there for a reason, revving it over that persistently sure won't do anything good for it.

Also spoilers: just use more rear brake, it does literally the exact same thing.

Anon that was wondering where the petcock on a ZX-11 was yesterday. After taking off the fairings and looking around at the damage, I ended up finding it under the seat, underneath the rear fairing. Seems a bit inconvenient if you can't realistically pull over to switch it to RES. But man are there problems that came with this bike, if it weren't off of Craigslist I'd be chewing someone out for it.

>people still think that engine braking is a thing

For fuck sake, the brakes are for slowing down, the engine is for speeding up.
Makes me mad that this is not drummed into every new riders head the day they start .
Yes if you jam it into a lower gear the compression of the engine will make you slow down but it's not meant to be used like that. It will fuck shit up and is an extremely poor habit.

Downshifting as you slow down is meant to be a way to match the engine speed to the road speed so that when you need to speed up again you don't waste time shifting gears to get there. It should almost never be used as a means of slowing the bike, the only exception being if you're coming up toward a red light or stop from a long way away and can lift off and let the bike slow down on its own, only downshifting so you don't stall or lug the engine.

For road use, this, a fucking thousand times this. I had been using an XFX el-cheapo ADVhelmet. It fit nicely and was relatively light, but loud, and not just because of the roost visor. I went down to CycleGear (fucking 3.5 hour drive; at least it was a nice day), looked at various helmets, and there were little issues that I didn't like about most of the ones I tried on. Tried on a ~$600 Shoei and bought the goddamn thing on the spot. Comfy and decently quiet. Makes me look like an astronaut but IDGAF.
>>
>>14997003
Yes, it is unnecessary wear on the engine and very hard on the drivetrain as it reverses the stress on the components. Engine braking is pretty much fine on a bike but you should avoid it in a car unless hooning. Even then on a bike if you are coming to a complete stop and will have no reason to possibly accelerate then just pull the clutch in and use your brakes.
>>

>>
>>14997029
Its still unnecessary wear and causes increased fatigue by providing reverse stress on drivetrain components. I'm not saying it will destroy your transmission or engine but it is fact that an engine/transmission constantly engine braked will exhibit more wear than one that isn't. Brake pads exist for a reason. There is just zero reason to downshift through the gears rolling up to a stop sign wearing out your clutch and syncros for no reason. Unless you are on a bike that is, then its race time all the time.

>>
>>14997029
>>14997021
>>14997019

The problem lies in the definition.

Engine braking is an effect NOT a technique.
Every time you lift off the throttle without punching the clutch in, that is engine braking.
Every time I get in or on a vehicle I make use of engine braking assisting me to slow down. I downshift to keep myself in the appropriate part of the rev range so that I can be ready to accelerate if or when I need to.

Jamming it into a lower gear to slow down faster rather than using the brakes is a fucking stupid habit. If you're hitting much above half the redline on a street bike when downshifting then you should be using the brakes instead.
Good riding is about using all things in unison. If the brakes aren't required to slow you down when you lift off then there's no reason to clutch in and use them but if you're coming up to a corner, it's dumb to drop 3 gears and redline the bike to slow down rather than a little pull of the brake which has been designed specifically for the job.

Thats pretty much the normie definition of engine braking however, avoidance of the brakes. Its dumb as shit but you'll never convince people to not do it unless necessary.
>>
>>14997071
>If you're hitting much above half the redline on a street bike when downshifting then you should be using the brakes instead.
You're probably totally right about that, but that's kind of hard when your redline is at 10.5k and your transmission is geared like a ceiling fan.

also I don't think you can really get "bored" of either, it's getting close to 2 years on the SV for me and it's yet to happen, I've always got room to improve and I never feel like I've outgrown the bike.

Granted I'd be looking around at gsx-r750's or cbr1000's if I had the full license by now but it's barely a handicap, as long as you have room to explore left on the bike you can't be bored.

It's not really like the gsx-s750 has that much more power anyway, 72 vs 96 at the wheel, significant? sure. Not so much it'd be a really big deal in whether or not one became "boring" and the other one didn't though.

proper sliders use good attachment points or use bolts that are weak enough they break off in such a situation, but yeah that does happen with shit sliders on crummy bikes but is pretty rare with modern stuff. i don't think anyone even makes a cage for a gsx-s, at least not in the US.

33.3% more horsepower is a huge amount. you may not be bored but everyone is different. after 10k miles or a year on a bike i've found myself quite bored and ready for something new but everyone is different. well worth it to buy the faster bike when possible as the US doesn't have license restrictions.

Your clutch is hydraulic instead of cable operated. Most bikes have a hydraulic front brake, but a cable operated clutch. Even today that's a luxury/high end/aftermarket item.

And the rolled back odo is worrying me, because I didn't notice it until my dads friend took a close look for a third time before telling me. I assume this is something that I can get in trouble for on insurance? I don't know the actual mileage and didn't know at the time of purchase.

non-bikefag here.

I saw this when I left the sticks today. What BMW is this? It looks fantastic and I want more pictures of it.
>>
>>14997331
I assume commiefornia has standard 10 year rules on odometer readings, so unless you have a lien against your bike or full coverage don't even sweat it.

But that wold give uneven pressure to the discs
Also my bike is supposedly ride by wire, but it still has 2 metal wires coming down from the handlebars

>You aren't losing any handling/weight by getting a real bike versus a starter bike.

I think this is just coming down to the fact that you're an american and possibly don't have many corners in the area you're in.
>>
>>14997318
I had a Ninja 250, then a K75c, then an SV650s, then this.

>>14997323
>>14997328
I've ridden several hour days in all kinds of weather, save blowing snow, on unfaired, upright bikes. Wind fatigue is less important than just about everything else in terms of touring comfort imo.

14 hours straight down the highway on a streetfigher'd ninja 250 and my sweaty socks that were a day too old mattered more than the wind from the semis going by.
>>
>>14997348
Idk why you Muslim cucks think all of the US is straight roads.
Guess that happens when your inbread

No I simply know how to lean and aren't cucked by big brother. But hey whatever makes you justify the insurance premiums on that childrens bike buddy.

Like I said shit bikes.

whew lad, iron butt rider I see. tell me more about your fair weather summer riding.

Had a lien back in 1996, but not since then according to the VIN Check. Was planning for full coverage, so I suppose I should sweat it at least a little.
>>
>>14997362
I'm not a faggit who records myself breaking the law. As I said before, I live/breath/eat sport bikes and cars for the 14 years I've been able to. Maybe once you have money you'll stop believing you willing choose to ride/drive shit.
>>
>>14997352
Luckily your opinion is obvious shit because you don't do anyb real touring. No need to say anything else, you've made it apparent you are a weekend ride. If that

Smoother, easier operation. Also you don't have to lube it but that's minor.

>>14997333
Uh huh. 6 hours in 40F rain the first time I went to Boston was great.
>>
>>14997372
I assume you just got your motorcycle endorsement and paid cash?

You won't be able to afford full coverage/ it won't be worth it. Collision insurance on a bike is crazy expensive.

>sweaty socks
>wet socks in general
The fucking worst, I'll give you that. Ergos, seat, and gear are of course the priority for comfymoto, but making it just *that* much more comfy is worth it to me (to a degree). Full disclosure: I have a V-Strom (non-OEM screen I have no idea what is) and a DR650 (what windscreen?)

I guess I'll just believe your opinion on the worth of small capacity motorcycles then, man who has never ridden a small capacity sportbike and has no evidence they have any skill at riding whatsoever.

This sure has been fun.

Don't worry, I'm sure you were merely pretending to be retarded the whole time.

Remember! it's australians who are the shitposters.

>>
>>14997396
I obviously started out on small bikes/dirt bikes and 200hp cars. Doesn't mean they don't bore me. There is something about the physical feeling of your stomach being in your throat accelerating
>>14997398
It is. It just lacks the top speed. Chassis is god tier and the motor has tons of low end power. What cuck bike do you ride?

I have no idea how much kkk rides, but I ride every day. I sold my truck and my Miata hasn't moved since the weather got above freezing.

Well, that'll be a nicer change of pace, although my CBR has pretty smooth operation so it's got some high expectations if you say it's even smoother.
>>14997381
Got my CBR (in the background) the day I turned 21 an could actually get my full M1. I have full coverage and it's only $96 a month, but that's because I asked if I could piggy back off my moms insurance till it was more affordable for me to get my own. ($2000 a year vs. $960, I'll take the $960. Thanks mom) And due to piggy backing off her, she sets the condition I get full coverage. Of course, I very well could not know shit about insurance costs and she had that all set up before I even got my bike, so I never looked into it.
