The difference is quite a lot
On a stock RB25DET you're looking at about 300Nm at about 4500rpm, the RB20's stock are around 260nm at around 62-6400rpm... which for a 6 is pretty peaky considering they rev out around 7500rpm.
Biggest shit with them is that they're just fucking old and there's a lot of upkeep on the old 20 to keep her running nicely, after a while you just sort of have to wonder if you're throwing good money into a fairly old, shit mill!

Not that they're an inordinately bad engine and they've got a nice linear power output that's very smooth, almost rotary-like in some ways. But if I'm throwing money into an engine, it may as well have some meat and the RB25 has a lot of meat! Plus you can beat on a 25 all day like the cunt owes you money and it just seems to keep on trucking.

The stock R32 platform is still a very nice car, there's not a heap of stuff that goes wrong with them in terms of electronics, strong suspension, good driveline, great diff's and provided its been loved- unlikely to have much rust either. Paint tended to get beat up pretty bad like most early 90's cars so they'll often get flakey clearcoat and its kinda uggo cosmetically.
But hey, its fucken old! So stuff will eventually pop up on most examples like any 25y/o car.

If you had to, the RB20 is something you can live with and yes, it will beat up your BMW... maybe enough to swear you off euro cars for good! :D

Yeah I know. I'm lucky and it's been a good car to me. Even now it still drives fairly fine, I can tell the transmission is a bit fucked because it is rough changing down into 2nd and 1st. It's an auto but I can feel it. The real problem is randomly when I'm driving I lose power/acceleration. I'm pretty sure it is the mass air flow sensor, but I got a 2nd hand replacement from wreckers and it didn't fix it. I don't know if the part I got is just fucked or if it something else. Could be a number of things, fuel pump, injections, catalytic converter.

I have had plenty of flat batteries from running a gaymertop for about 3hrs and a viesa all night. But getting a jumpstart is pretty easy, even a car can do it. end result, go for nl-nf or older, or bf or newer

commodores:
vn-vp supposedly had electrical gremlins often, a bit primitive too
vr was better, vs was reliable as hell, just prone to shit like interior switches breaking, cheap n easy though
vt - juggling between the 5.0 and 5.7 is tricky, 5.7 makes heaps more power and has more potential but the 5.0 is possibly more dependable since it's iron block and head
if you want any commodore vt-vx you want a vx series 2, had upgraded suspension bits that should've been there originally
vy-vz, the alloytec 6 is apparently a bitch for the timing chain job, you'll find heaps being flogged just before it's due
with commodores, newer is better unless you really want something lightweight (and unsafe) then vs is probably the answer
