The apocalypse is happening. People turning on each other. You need to get out of the city.

What vehicle do you want in your garage?

>The apocalypse is happening.
The type of apocalypse determines the type of vehicle or even non-vehicle. Zombie? Biblical? Plague? Alien Invader? Ragnarok? Or did another Bush become president again?

>You need to get out of the city.
I want an Autobot. But since those are not available, you basically forced me to get some sort of offroad sport bike with multipurpose tires good for both street and off-road. There's no way a car will make it thru all the blockades. It will need the ability to carry extra fuel containers. The bike needs an extra quiet muffler and a switch to turn off its running lights and lit displays.

lel you people putting 40'' tires on stock production vehicles. What are you going to do when you snap a axle? It's not like you can go to a mechanic or order shit online during a SHTF scenario. You're going to need something purpose built to survive rough conditions. A Wrangler with 40's is not.

I'd turn one of these into a motorhome.

where are you going to carry them?

the best idea is to live inside a fortified basement, why would you ever want to take all your supplies with you

yeah, fantastic idea to go through a town with all your supplies and letting everyone now you are passing through bro, enjoy getting robbed or killed

lets say you have all your ammo, food, and water with you and your car runs out of gas or leaves you stranded in the middle of a suburb, everyone will go after you

if you instead just carry a rifle, some bottles of water and a couple of magazines you can cover a lot of distance without being noticed, specially at night

you can easily carry the animal you just hunted in a stroller like pic related

lol @ all the people saying "diesel this" or "diesel for sure"

diesel fuel is uncommon compared to gasoline, and most gas stations will have a much smaller supply of it compared to gasoline

by the time you've started your roaming about in your SHTF vehicle, 90% of the diesel will be spoiled from environmental factors or used up by people driving giant war rigs

get a small 4 cylinder SUV like a RAV4 or a CRV, it's got AWD, storage, relatively quick, good on gas, is very reliable, and can be lightly modified and upgraded as needed

it's a bad idea to go with something really old because "it's simple and easy", largely because parts for old cars are gonna be rare

you're better off with something simple and modern, you can easily yank a MAF sensor out of a common vehicle like a RAV4, but good luck finding a new distributor cap for your 40 year old truck

what is biodiesel for 500 alex?
>>
>>14995442
Something that will be even harder to find/make than regular diesel when SHTF
>>
>>14995354
Two schools of thought in a SHTF situation: you bug in (which you're talking about; this is a legit strategy if you CAN stay put) or you bug out. We're talking about vehicles, which implies bugging out. A capable offroader is going to take you further and faster than a bike. That said, I'm taking my bike with me in my pickup if the dookie should ever find its2 way to the proberbial fan
>>
>>14995442

So you'll have electricity and a refinery to create biodiesel? Because biodiesel is susceptible to spoilage in a number of ways. Unless someone has the foresight to stockpile the fuel and add stabilizers to maintain it, anything you come across in 6-12 months time will be partially/fully shit.

If ANYTHING, a car that runs on ethanol might be the best bet, because you don't really need modern refining equipment and facilities to create alcohol. Sure it'd take a fuckload of time to create a good enough batch to power your vehicles, but it'd be something.

Any vehicle like a truck or jeep is still gonna have its guts ripped out by all the shit that thing DOESN'T tear down, and that pathway is still too jumbled and fucked for people to traverse. If anything it's made it more difficult, because now people have to walk on top of these half-bent trees and shit, instead of just walking between them.

>Implying anybody with a brain doesn't immediately get of the d44/d30 on their wrangler

I wouldn't choose a wrangler though. I'd go with a pickup truck. I'm thinking 4.0 stick shift ranger. They're decent on gas 18-22 mpg although with a loaded bed, bigger tires, regear, and lift it'd be less. They're small, which means more places it can go, although with front IFS and the biggest suspension lift for 00-11 being 4 inches, maybe it would be smart to go with an OBS f150 or 250. Also, since it's a pickup you can keep a dual sport in the bed for when the truck can't get where you're headed.

You watch too many movies.

Sure there's going to be abandoned vehicles, but in mass along the highway? Not likely.

Where do you base the assumption that the majority of humanity will get on the highway and just abandon their vehicle? This is done in movies/TV to emphasize the fucked up state of society but realistically it's not very likely. Most people's reaction when everything is fucked isn't to get on the highway. Where do you even think they're going? We're not discussing a movie, TV, or a game. Cars aren't going to be there just because a designer thought it would set an apocalyptic mood. Every car on the highway has to be left there by a person that had somewhere to go and was stuck there with no other option other than to abandon their vehicle which at that point may be one of the few objects they still have and intend to keep.

Think critically.

Otherwise you're implying its going to be nice and clear for anybody to drive anywhere.

An evacuation displaces people from one area to another.

"Apocalypse" pretty much implies that pretty much everywhere is fucked.

If everywhere is fucked, there's no place to displace the population to and no reason to displace them since it's going to be the same either way.

>>14995988
>Remember what happened in Atlanta this year when it snowed? If there is panic, people will drive erratically and wreck.
That's not panic. That's people not accustomed to driving on snow/ice driving from localized snow/ice to get away from said snow/ice.

>Localized area where people want to leave
>Pretty much everywhere else is fine

This is when people will get on the highway. If everywhere is fucked then there's no reason for it.

>crowded highways
>inclement weather severely reducing traction and visibility
>niggers don't account for this and run into each other
>resulting accidents back up highways

It's a fairly specific set of events to create this. Most people think on a VERY small scale which is why movies, TV, and games can get away with this to set the atmosphere for an apocalyptic society. Seeing this repeated then furthers the validity of it in their minds. It's just theatrics though. It's not to represent reality, it's to set the mood. Same reasoning behind hospitals often being depicted as dark and monochrome in movies.

Smart. Horses are great bargaining chips. They'll never go extinct so you can always get another horse, but a scrapped car doesn't just replace itself without some expertise. Eventually, you run out of working vehicles and people who know how to rebuild them.

>let me ride with you guys and we can eat my horse
>five weeks later
>wrangle up some new horses with your newfound bros
>>
>>15000747
The issue with horses is that they're not silent and still require fuel when not in use.

There's an estimated 253 million registered cars on US roads and another several million sitting in junkyards from minor damage or because they couldn't meet emissions requirements.

If you learn how to work on them (which I hope the majority of users on this board have) then you're not going to just forget how to work on them. If you're really worried about it, stock up on repair manuals for common models.

What cars do you have that aren't silent when off?

If this is transportation that you're not going to be using regularly, you probably don't want to have the need to provide fuel for it 24/7/365.

>hydrogen conversion
>DIY biodiesel

>great bargaining chips
>super easy to wrangle

This is extremely contradictory. If they're that easy to wrangle, they're not going to make great bargaining chips.

You can't exactly tint your horse's windows and hide out in it if need be. It's presence will immediately draw attention to you, even when not in use.

not everyone has built up this skill. It's almost like spacial awareness, or tetris.

Most of us probably grew up playing with lego or Meccano, but the majority of people under 30 can't put something together the same way it came apart.

Building things has been a declining hobby for decades. My friends think I'm some kind of machine god because I can rebuild a carb without a service manual.

I imagine the roads will be utter chaos for the first couple days, and then fuel will be almost inaccesable after a week. Remaining mobile vehicles will likely be people who stockpiled fuel, and dieselbros who found/made something flammable enough to run on. So i dont plan on moving again unless i absolutely have to.

I live in eastern Europe and I would probably pick a Niva with a few tweaks:
>independent heater
>snorkel
>roof rack and couple extra lights
>capable tires
>maybe some upgrades/fixes of known mechanical issues and production quality issues

I think this would be sufficient to get me wherever I want in any weather conditions from middle east to siberia. Road infrastructure is acceptable anywhere in 2000km radius.

Pros:
>simple petrol engine
>4x4
>decent offroad performance and on roads with no winter maintenance
>compact
>can take 4 adults or 2 adults and 3 kids.
>all mechanical, every village barn mechanic can work on it
>can sleep in it.

Cons:
>production quality can be a lottery
>fuel consumption can be high due to primitive engine and short gears
>can rust but in apocalypse scenario it wouldnt matter

My second pick would probably be Suzuki Samurai or UAZ with Peugeot diesel engine... or some old Toyota.

Oh and I would like to see people posting those fuckhueg 6x6 12 ton trucks changing their tire in 5 minutes and feeding them diesel.

Did they come from factory with that engine?

Small arms fire probably from a good distance at a bad angle by someone with little to no training with said weapon.Throw some light plating on the doors and over the windows and you're a hell of a lot better off than you are with an open top doorless vehicle.
>>

Could this actually work? Replacing the bogies with a tube chassis and having hydraulic manifolds on the sides for steering? Since they are electric, the motors would be moved to hookup directly to the wheels when the bogie is replaced. You would have a lot of torque, something super durable, and utility.

I dont know, but I have heard about them and people seem to swear by them. I have seen only one and it wasnt even on license plates. The owner said paperwork didnt get through the bureau so he just uses it for getting some firewood and hunting. That one was bought at the military surplus auction.

Peugeot XD 88/4 Diesel was in ARO from factory, so maybe not a big jump to be in UAZ.

They are the best diesel engine ever made in my opinion so no wonder people swear by them.

I always had more issues with hmmwv than with LMTV/FMTV.

>>14996469
I'm not sure why the weight really matters unless you plan on driving it through sand. Anything with armor is going to be slow, heavy and get shit mileage. In this situation I feel like you are relegated to two choices, minimalist on a motorcycle and hope no one shoots you while riding, or the exact opposite with something like an FMTV or Unimog which is slow and gets shit mileage but can carry weeks worth of supplies on it.

You could always replace the seats and modify it so it's more comfy to sleep in.

>>

You won't ever hear a Transit coming up behind you and be able to tell instantly what it is from 60 feet away just from the sound of that 2.5 DI.
Because you never got the MkII and MkIII.

Thats like Germans saying they get Mustangs just because you can now can buy one over there.

Hide behind your claims of fallacy all you want. You know nothing about Transits.

You did not get Mk1 to Mk6 of the Transit.
You missed the first 50 years of the Transit.
You grew up the first 20 years of your life without ever knowing they existed, let alone seeing one in person.
How the fuck can you claim to know anything about them.

Diesel mechanic here. Most hotels and high rises have power generators. They all have 1000L+ diesel tanks. Larger buildings with multiple generators often have a bulk tank under the car park ramp with 10-20k litres of diesel.

I have a pair of Ute's with 1000L tanks on the back, in the end of times I will be Fuel King Supreme

There would be a LOT of 4Runners out there. Primarily because you can't really kill em...Especially the older ones. After they pass a certain age/mileage threshold, they become effectively immortal.

My old 99' had a perpetually cracked exhaust manifold, and the cat leaked because some niggers stole the original one off of it in a parking lot.
Turns out the original cats had Platinum in em'. Who knew.
On that note though, I really need to replace the timing belt on my 07'...And I REALLY don't want to...
>>
>>15017624
All cats have precious metals in them. Why did you think people stole them? To fit on their car? You melt.
>>
>>15017628
Wasn't aware of that as a 17 year old.
Sure as shit am now. Live and learn, I guess. I miss that 99' sometimes. Then I remember how fucked the suspension was after 237K Miles, riding on stuffed 33's. And how absolutely anemic that 2.7L 4banger was...
I'll stick with my 07' V8.

A reliable motorcycle and a bicycle with spare parts.

Anyone who doesn't see the value of riding your bicycle during the apocalypse is dead in the water as soon as they're out of highly degradable gasoline that will be rare as shit as soon as anything serious happens.

Alternatively, I'd drive a battle bus straight into Valhalla.
