Yeah. That spongy glue was an absolute bitch to scrape off so I used some tar remover. Then some polish and wax.

>why is it illegal? is it even not possible with letting the TÜV or something look at it?
I contacted a firm that specialises in legalising shit with our mobility and transportation institute. They said the only measurement possible for my car's version above what I have (185/65 R15) is 195/55 R16, which is already mentioned in the registration as a special annotation.
Upside is I wouldn't need to do anything else if I wanted to put some 16'' wheels on it, downside is it's not really worth it upgrading from 15'' to 16''...

It's fucking retarded. Even with 205/45 R17 the rolling diameter would be identical. I don't get it.
>>
>>14984585

Sure, but there are versions of my car with stock 17'' wheels.
The Grande Punto 1.9 multijet/1.4 T-jet sporting comes to mind.
>>
>>14984585
yeah 15 can look okay anyways, if you put up some nice wheels it could look better than 16" anyways.
>>
>>14984619
I could put some 16'' in it. It's legal to do so. But is it really worth spending so much money in wheels/tyres for a mere 2,5cm difference? Eh.
>>
>>14984625
feels bad man.
I thought about getting new wheels for mine but putting 1 grand into a car that's worth maybe 700 euros isn't the smartest thing to do, right?
depends if you find some lightweight and good looking wheels or need new tires anyways, then you could go for 16" and keep the current rims for winter

2nd gen explores are not "mom wagons" lol these were the last "good" explorers built to last.

3rd gen and up are "mom wagons" thats when they started directly pandering to soccer moms.

Also, 5 speeds are trash both the manual and auto. The 4 Speed auto with the 5.0 was and is the only reliable combo.
>>
>>14984856
Just mentioned it because it's not too common to find actually on an Explorer. I haven't put a dime into this thing aside from oil change/inspection, I bought it as is. The wheels look like regular XLT alloys that are painted black. Not sure what method was used to lift it, I haven't cared enough to check. It just works and that's why I bought it.

>>14984860 The auto they used with the 5.0 is nothing to write home about, it's just slightly less trash than what they used with the 4.0. The 5 speed manual is definitely better in terms of reliability and cost to own.
>>
>>14984885
>The 5 speed manual is definitely better in terms of reliability and cost to own.

Absolutely not, it is WELL known in the explorer community that the manual is mediocre at best and not preferably. Same for the 5 speed auto.

The 4R70W in the 5.0 models is considered heavy duty as compared to the others. Mines got over 300K miles on it and has zero issues. Just pulled two cars out of a ditch in the last month.
>>
>>14984899
The 4R70W is just okay, that's it. It's a 90's slushbox auto, don't act like it's anything more than alright. The 5 speed auto is terrible. The 5 speed manual is pretty great, it's not a heavy duty trans and won't stand up to a moronic driver who beats on it, but it will last forever if driven normally and gets the best MPG.
>>
>>14984947
>and gets the best MPG.

Sorry but thats irrelevant to the 5.0 since it was never offered with the 5 speed. I needed the beefier trans for the torque.

And I dont think the manual ever get better MPG's than the auto 5 speed. The are the same save for a 1 MPG difference in city according to EPA estimates.

The 4R70W was built on the AODE which was built on the AOD so no, its not a "90s slushbox" but rather represents the best 4 speed Ford ever offered alone with their best V8, the 5.0.

Thats why the 4 speed/5.0 is considered the best among the 2nd gens.

'90 Volvo 240 wagon. About to roll 260k miles, been DDing since 181k miles almost 4 years ago with only very minor issues (mostly when I first bought it for $500).
>>
>>14984947
The 4.0 SOHC and 5 speed manual is known as the most unreliable combo as well.

>Muh timing chain cassettes (this repair will total most trucks)
>>
>>14984994
Anon if you like your 90s slushbox auto that's fine, but don't claim it to not be a 90s slushbox.

>>14985016
The 4.0 SOHC is known to have issues regardless of what trans is behind it. The 4.0 OHV is much more reliable.
>>
>>14985031
>Anon if you like your 90s slushbox auto that's fine

Hey I like any trans or engine that still pulls hard at 301K miles.
>>
>>14984860
dodge caravans and mecury sable wagons were built to last too, doesn't change anything. The Explorer has always pandered to the suburban family unit. Suv's weren't quite crossovers yet but they had gone soft
>>
>>14985054
Yeah I'd agree that's very respectable, I think in general the first and second gen Explorers are pretty well made and can last a very long time with basic maintenance.

90's SUVs were not the same as what we have today. They were actually supposed to be rugged and fun while being more practical than a pickup truck. Today they are just family movers. Wagons and minivans are not comparable to older SUVs. The Explorer didn't really fall victim to becoming family friendly until the third gen.
>>
>>14985084
>but they had gone soft

Muh AWD 5.0 wants to talk to you lol

Handles just like a truck(and it aint comfy), theres a reason literally every local government had a stable of them.
>>
>>14985136
awd 5.0 is the softest of the 2nd gens, no low range and a weak ptu that will overheat with any moderate off pavement use. The government also had fleets of chevy luminas. The government just specs a vehicle configuration and buys from the lowest bidder.

your suv has a large S and a little u.
>>
>>14985136

You do know that not every SUV was meant for intense off road use right? I never once said it was extremely capable off road and I can guarantee you it'll fair far better than 90% of whats driving around now.

That being said, its full time AWD with an LSD rear. quite capable to get out of pretty much any situation you find yourself in.

If you want to go off road, do it right and get something with 4x4 (low and high ranges) + locking diffs. This isnt that, but its capable enough to get the job done and not get stuck doing it.
>>
>>14985245
Its AWD + rear LSD. Like I said, this model was not meant to serious off road use. Rather, it wont get stuck in snow, mud... etc...
>>
>>14984540
the driver rise weather stripping produces some wind noise at high speeds (80+) but otherwise it is extremely quiet. Not really sure what to compare it to? About on par with a new GTI based on my experience if I remember my test drive correctly. You can have a conversation at ~100 mph without raising your voice

The 5 spd manual in the explorers is the same as the rangers and is known for being pretty reliable, I have hauled alot with my rangers 5 speed. The explorer is much heavier though i feel
