Miata noob here. Was thinking of buying this thing from Moss. Is it good?

Should I upgrade the exhaust at the same time?

no.
>>
>>14977028
Just... no?
>>
>>14977034
>is it good
>asks if an air filter is good
no it wont do anything your stock air filter will do. unless you're massively modifying the induction of the engine then no point in just slapping on an air filter.
>>
>>14977054
So a CAI on an N/A would be a waste of money?
>>
>>14977069
your airbox is already a cold air induction system. actually i dont know about miatas because I've never worked on one specifically. but generally the air boxes are ported to not be directly infront of the exhaust and have osme tube running to the front or side fender for air intake. but do you have an aftermarket intake and exhaust system? if not there's no point in changing the resistance of the air filter element.
>>
>>14977080
Well, the product I am looking at is advertised as "Air Intake System by Cobalt," and includes both the filter and the tube. Do you mean "aftermarket intake" as the intake manifold?

And I do plan to replace the exhaust system.
>>
>>14977069
Unless you want a different intake sound, in general, yes, they are a waste of money.

>>
>>14977116
Would installing an aftermarket exhaust be of any benefit?

I live in MA.
>>
>>14977160
I don't know. Haven't really researched it. Depends on the car. Some can make good gains if they have a restrictive system. Just do some googling and find out.
>>

>>

>>

It's on the list of many things to fix. Now that I have the car running and driveable, I'll probably drive down to Richmond in the next month or so to get a better roll bar. The current one moves 6 inches with a rough shake.

I know that from the factory they don't usually come wired well, and are pretty wimpy. How many of you have headrest speakers, are they any good and how do you make them better?

Also, how much can I expect to pay for a moderate condition NA8? I'm not looking for some perfect one, but I'd like it to not be falling apart.

aw11 is a lot older and they're kind of deteriorating at this point. also they have even less storage than an NA and less power. it's also a bit more difficult to service due to midship layout.

that said I have a friend with a Silvertop swapped AW11 and it is a great car.

I made it to 65000 miles. Feels okay I guess. I don't like watching the mileage go up but at the same time I plan on keeping it forever. I put in the delrin door bushings and a cup holder yesterday day.

The door bushings eliminated a ton of rattle in the car and the interior seems a bit quieter now. Not to mention the car feels slightly stiffer over bumps now. Over all, I think it was a solid purchase, even though I have to slam the shit out of my doors now.

The cup holder is just a straight 10/10 because now I don't have to use that shitty NB1 cup holder in the center console

DiscountTireDirect is running a deal right now where I can get 4 Konig Heliums for 270$ shipped free.

When I bought my hardtop NA, 1996, with 65k on it, it has these giant BBS 16s that I looked up and weigh like 18 pounds each. The car feels so sluggish even after I got it fully serviced.

What are a decent CHEAP tire I can put on 15x6.5 rims that arent super terrible. Looking for something less money than a S Drive or a Comp 2. I want to actually enjoy driving this thing but right now its so slow. I am not going to autocross it so just something for a daily driver.

I'm hoping after I get new rims and tires I enjoy driving it but right now it's like driving a cramped economy car. I might sell her if I don't start enjoying it as much as everyone made it out to be. Driving it is OK, but right now I mainly just like the looksm but having a car for the looks isn't worth it to me since I'm always worried about something bad happening it it.

A style bar like that just bolts to the top of the seatbelt tower. A lot of people say that in the event of a rollover the style bar can bend down and crush your head like a mousetrap.

A real roll bar bolts to the unibody, typically in four or six locations. In addition to actually providing rollover protection it will stiffen the chassis a bit.

ON mine they're pretty okay, they really help when you have the top down. I paid around $7.5k for my NA8 with the torsen and power everything. Who here is still using 14" wheels for autocross? I am looking for 14" X 7.5" or 8". The only decent wheels I have found are Enkei RPF1's in 14x7. I know those would work for 185 or 195 tires, but I really want to run 205 or 225. I am planning on using The Z214's or if I have more of a budget the R7's.

>LS and old Ford v8s are powerful but low revving pushrod trash
>Coyote and Voodoo are high revving but are fuckhuge and literally wider than the engine bay
What'd be the perfect fantasy engine swap?
I guess from a packaging perspective, you could just boost the miata's stock engine until it kills you or the engine, considering there are 800whp builds for it
>>
>>14991829
You can get R888's and Z214's in 205/55/14 and 225/50/14. The R7's are only 205/55/14. Also there are some left over R6's still available in 205/60/14.

I guess I could probably just run the 185/60/14 Direzza ZII's on the PF01's if I don't find anything that isn't going to be expensive. I don't really want to spend more than $200 a wheel, so the custom 3 piece is out of the questoin

K20/24 is probably the best in my opinion
>slightly less or near same weight as stock

Its a match made in heaven. I mean think about it. Mazda makes excellent chassis and puts mediocre engines in them. Honda makes excellent engines but always puts them in mediocre fwd (minus the S2000 and NSX) chassis. Basically you take the best things about both company's and combine them. As an owner of an Ecotec I just don't see the point.
The L61 and LAP (2.2) are just as gutless and the stock 1.8 and the LE5's (2.4) only make 170ish hp (depending on model). Without boost they are useless. You are better off just boosting the stock engine.

I'm not saying the Ecotec platform is shit, because it isn't. It's an excellent engine family that has alot of interchangeable parts and can make big power with forced induction. But for a less money you could make the same power out of the stock Miata engine.

Why do you think its priced so low? Just cause its an automatic? Seems like mechanically speaking its fine.
>>
>>14993074
IDK about the price. Ecotecs are known for being cheap though, most of the price would be mounts, wiring, parts to adapt the cooling system, etc. Also not sure if you can adapt the factory trans or have to use a Sol or Sky trans. As for the power, the 2.4's might make 200 at the crank with I/H/E and a tune, but there is no way you are getting the 2.2's to 200 N/A without alot of work..

Slave cylinder is super easy to replace, mine went at around 100k miles. Takes like fifteen mins to replace. Also the part is like 30 bucks.
>>

Mine's fucking up - got 85k miles on it. Replaced the slave with a used one from a friend since I don't want to pay $30-$40 for one from O'Reilly/NAPA/etc. Was going to buy an Exedy one off RockAuto for like $15 and then they ran out of stock. Replaced the slave and bled the clutch and my car's still stalling out and getting locked in/out of gear, so I guess the master cylinder a shit, too. Waiting for RockAuto to restock both. It's still drivable, just a fucking hassle.
>Be coming up to red light
>Downshift until I come to a near stop because I'm a noisy faggot
>Clutch in
>Car keeps crawling forward anyway
>Brake to a full stop so I don't end up driving into the intersection with a red light (or into the curb/someone's car if I'm parking)
>Engine dies
>Locked into first gear (or reverse if backing up in parking lot or w/e)
>Engine won't start because clutch won't disengage
>Pump clutch pedal a couple times, release brake and car rolls a little, allowing the clutch to disengage and the engine to start up
Shitsux... stopped downshifting to a stop now, just throw it into neutral from second. I'm guessing it's pretty bad on the clutch, but I don't care about the clutch, the sooner shit explodes, the sooner I can get that Flyin' Miata kit to replace it.

I used to have TEIN Basics, which they dont sell anymore but are basically what you bought. To be honest they weren't very good. They lowered the car a bit too much and had very little shock travel. I was pretty much on the bumpstops all the time which led to a very harsh ride.

I have some XIDA Clubsports now and even though the the springs are like 2x stiffer, they offer a much more comfortable ride.

Goddamnit, /o/, I just topped that and the res up last week. No residue on oil cap, no discolouring on plugs. Sticky thermostat? But then why would it drop after a coast?
Why is my res bone dry?

How much smaller is the NB inside compared to the NA?

I drove a NA for the first time last week and I surprisingly fit pretty well in it considering I'm 6'4. Will I be able to fit in a NB? I would rather have a NB since they're faster, better overall cars, and are cheaper than NAs by me.

I just need to find a manual one.

Yes sir.
I learned my lesson regarding that with my Nissan Stagea. The cover appears to aid airflow with a low pressure region after the radiator, presumably that's the same with a miata.

Just did a flush as saw no more gank than any other car, seemed very free-flowing. Maybe a sticky thermo, it seemed to allow flow from rad outlet to thermo outloet, albeit minimally. No flow with the engine on, however.

Will be keeping an eye every day for the next month. New fluids and all.

I'd love to repaint mine, it looks great but there's crazy cracks and a couple drip marks on the lower doors, overspray on weather stripping and no spray on certain gaps. Also dat orangepeel, eg top left of this pic.

just bought a hard dog roll bar for my nb so i don't die. pic related
>>
>>15005166
Agreed, I'm getting one too. But seriously speaking, how hard would it be to roll a miata? Excluding falling off a cliff, even if you go into a corner way too fast and end up going sideways, it's low enough for you to just spin.
>>
>>15005173

Dunno about on-road, but off road (like blowing a corner and ending up sliding sideways through the dirt), it doesn't take much for your tires to dig in and roll just about anything.
>>
>>15005166
>>15005173
I've read the counter argument that the miata is very hard to roll on public roads, and a rear-end collision + roll bar - helmet = death, so if you don't track your car, not having a roll bar could be safer?

Oh yeah, I realize that. When I used to go wheeling in my shitty samurai, if you hit mud going downhill, you better hope you don't slide sideways or you're gonna roll. Even if you have low range engaged and are going 5kph, you go sideways and dig in, you're fucked.
>>15005212
The roll bar thing is true if you're on stock seats. But if you put in buckets or whatever with a higher seat back, it's fine. That way the seat is between you and the actual roll bar. I'm planning on getting 1 (maybe 2) of the cheaper sparcos sprints to put in when I cage it, since the stock seats are way too low in the seatback for me anyways. Plus, 6 point harnesses look cool and since I have no airbags, they might be a good call.

I wonder what the Porsche guys are thinking when that shitbox passes them.

The Meister-R Zeta-R must be very good, the car looks super stable. I bought the Zeta-S for mine due the lower spring rates(road car), and I'm very happy with them. The default ride-height might be a little on the low side, but that's not a real problem. With a softer setting the Zeta-S offers better comfort than the Bilsteins found on the NB sport.

Quick question.

Are Miatas from the early nineties reliable as daily drivers today?

>>
>>15009036
>but if you don't tune it to at least 200 whp you're probably a cuck

Comes from the guy who's considering a Fiat.
>>
>>15009332
Mine's from 92 and it's very reliable.
>>
>>15009334
It shouldn't be a reason to avoid those years. As long as you make sure to properly torque the crank bolt after doing the timing belt/water pump, then you'll never have an issue with it.
>>
>>15009334
My mx5 had the short nose replaced after about 100k kilometers, to be honest the likelihood of you finding an original short nose thats still intact is pretty slim, most owners would of had that replaced. that being said if you did end up finding one after all these years its fairly safe to assume that if it didnt fail already it shouldnt fail now
>>
>>15009248
hard to say, 6000 might be a bit low, i spent 7000 for a 300km 91 NA which was basically $5500 for the car and 1500 in repairs/maintenance/rego. try and get a test drive if you are serious, check for rust under the car behind the doors, the softtop drains can get clogged and rust out the body from there. the hardtop is good because if you ever get in a situation where you need cash you can sell it for almost a quarter of the cars value.
>>
>>15009557
I can't go inspect unfortunately. It's from interstate and I don't have the time to drive it back myself.
Maybe I could find someone reputable from the forums to go have a peek at it if I pay them a bit but they're not in a major city either. Bit of an unfortunate situation
>>
>>15009334
Mine fucked up and messed up the nose of the crank so I cleaned it up with a file and put the key in the crank with JB Weld then threw the pulley on and torqued it down.
Been fine since then.
