A/C isn't working, is there anyway to tell if it just needs a recharge or a new motor?

VW scirocco or Opel manta? The Opel is rwd but the VW is more compact and parking space is hard to find here.

How does an aftermarket ECU work? Does it totally replace the old ECU, or does it attach to it and alter it's programming?

If you were to replace one, does this mean you need all new custom wiring and a tune, or are they just plug in and go?
>>
>>14970841
Wish I could afford/find one in Hungary, there's none for sale. Poorfag uni kid btw.
>>
>>14970817
Is it just blowing warm? If so check to make sure your compressor is turning on when you turn on your ac. If it is then you probably just have a leak. You can recharge it but you would still have a leak. Don't use that freon from oreillys or wherever that says it will stop leaks. It will just keep leaking.
>>
>>14970853
A piggy back ecu is one that connects in line with your stock ecu and changes the output commands of the ecu to increase performance basically. A stand alone ecu like megasquirt completely replaces your ecu and is plug and play. You can hook it up to your laptop with the software and configure settings.
>>
>>14970902
It's not my car so I'll have to check. If it's a leak my plan was to use freon that had that UV dye so I can find the leak with a black light
>>
>>14970933
Good plan. More than likely it's a leak. If the freon level is too low the compressor won't turn on either. Just take your freon gauges and check that first.
>>
>>14970920
Thanks, that clears up a lot.

Now with the megasquirt you mentioned you'd need a fair bit of knowledge to actually get a good tune out of it considering you're doing it yourself wouldn't you? Are there any presets available for this kind of thing, or would you need to go get a dyno tune anyway?

Also, are ECU replacers universal, or model specific?
>>
>>14970959
>this
I've been trying to find answers to this for months.
>>
>>14970959
I'm sure they come with a preset tune or you could probably transfer your stock tune to them. I'm not that knowledgeable on them. Dyno tune is always gonna be your best bet over a can tune.
>>
>>14970959
>>14970965
There are presets for common engines, or you can just ask someone who's megasquirted the same car as yours to help you out.

Replacement ECUs are "universal", but that just means they come without any of the specific parts (sensors etc) and you'll need to adapt/configure them for your car (e.g. tell the ECU what kind of outputs to expect from which sensor, like how many teeth the trigger wheel has or how it's positioned relative to TDC) and maybe also make a wiring harness. Again, for popular cars there are ready-made harnesses available if I remember correctly.

Is investing on cars or real estate a good idea?
>>
>>14970996
As far as stocks? That's usually a gamble. As far as flipping houses or cars, it can be lucrative but you gotta stay on top of it and avoid bad buys. If you got what it takes go for it.

idk how antique plates work in your state, but if they're anything like vanity or historical plates in CA the p/o can either keep them or transfer them to you, and you can either say they were kept by the p/o or relinquish them. Either way you'll get new plates.

I have an 2006. With no mods and modest driving your looking at 25-28 mpg or so highway, depends on the conditions. And about half that for city. If you do a lot of commuting then I'd say no. And of course with mods your mpg will likely go down.

Realtorfag here

Real estate will appreciate 9 times out of 10, but the concept of flipping houses is a bit over hyped... Hiring a good placing company, swapping flooring, installing new cabinetry and fresh coats of paint will provide similar returns to major cosmetic upgrades. As long as there is structural integrity, most buyers will focus on the furnishings and subliminal touches versus some 40k stonework facade. Whilst you absolutely can profit from major upgrades, in fact flip jobs are usually much simpler than TV makes them out to be, if you go too far, or invest energy and time on a structurally defective house, often you're out money after materials and labor costs. Just spruce it up a bit for the open house and you'll profit tremendously.

Cars on the other hand have more factors to consider in terms of upgrades. Whereas home buyers will have limited ability to qualify the structural state of a given home, car buyers who would purchase a modified/restored car are able to tell very quickly the state a car is in. As well they will be far more savvy and demanding in terms of value in use. You really, really have to improve a car to be able to put it more than 10% above black book value. The amount of time it takes to turn a $5000 car into a $20,000 car is simply not worth it. Even with the best mods, with each passing year it will devalue unless it somehow develops a cult status like a miata or AE86.

Basically, houses appreciate, cars depreciate, 10k put into a house can fetch you 50k on the price tag, 10k put into a car will put the price up 10k.

Just one more, is there anything I should really watch out for with a 1992 Chevy tracker (geo tracker in the US)? Obviously given its age parts will be a bitch to source but like, craftsmanship wise? Do you know how to diagnose a bad electric motor or battery? How about specialized software to interact and troubleshoot issues? Take a bad guess and run out of juice and stuck on the side of the road, better call a cab because you can't just go get more gas. Granted that last one could be an issue early on. When battery tech gets good enough we might see portable jump batteries that will boost your cars battery enough to get you to a plug in.

It's on the side just above the crankshaft pulley. Turns out that's the exposed timing belt wrapping around the tensioner pulley. I just don't know how it could have happened, what risks it puts the rest of the engine in, and what I'd have to do to fix it. I've never encountered this shit before.

/o/, I very badly need help.

I was trying to install a new stereo in my car, took out the factory radio, cut off the plug that went to it, bared the ends of the wires, and tried to connect them to the right ones in my new stereo using a voltmeter and diagram. A couple of them shorted together by mistake, and I saw some sparks. Now, my wipers, power windows, and power locks don't work, and the speedometer sometimes moves for no reason. I looked at all the fuses, none looked blown. I'm afraid I might have blown a computer in charge of those things (Body control module?). What do I do?

It's raining where I am, and it's dangerous to drive the car this way. If I don't have the wipers working by Wednesday, I'm straight fucked. Need to take a several hundred mile road trip for my job. Don't have the money for a mechanic.

Would it be an option to wire the wipers to an analog switch?

>>
>>14974905
But like I said, I checked all the fuses. None of them were burnt or broken.

I hope to fucking hell it's just fuses and I'm missing something stupid, but I really don't think that's the case. Can fuses be blown without being visibly broken? Should I test them with a multimeter?
>>
>>14974944
check the wiring again and make sure it's proper and correctly spliced, fuses can burn out without being visible. Do use your dmm. check that your not pinching the speedometer cable by anychance with your new stero.
>>
>>14975101
Ok, thanks. I'll try each fuse with my multimeter.

I'm having trouble finding good information about the wiring. Know where I can get it? I don't know which the fuck cable is the speedometer anyway.

I'm trying to torrent the service manual, but the only download is like 4GB of Ford service manuals all together, with very few seeders. Can't even find a PDF anywhere on the internet. Does Ford actively have those links removed, or is it just that no one bothers to upload?

I've been offered this suspension from a guy who took it off his old car. It's at a pretty good price (About half of what I'd pay brand new), and was all set to buy it until he mentioned that the threading got stripped when he removed it.
He included this picture and said that "It might have cross thread on the way out. If you use a thread chaser it shouldn't be a problem."

Ok I have an issue with my truck /o/
I need to get this fixed before I sell it.

After a good 10 minutes of driving about 60 - 70 mph down the highway my service engine light comes on and stays on until you stop driving down the highway for a little while. Or if you drive longer down the highway. I cant get any info on this issue on google and I keep procrastinating on getting the code scanned. What could be the issue? its a 2.2 liter vortec inline 4.
>>
>>14981173
You need to get the code scanned. That's the only way to tell why the idiot lights are on, dipshit.

However, if there's nothing noticeable wrong with the running of the engine (weird smoke, misfires, etc.), it's most likely just an emissions fault. Emissions fault codes can be thrown for the stupidest shit, and in the couple years of auto tech training I've had I'd say more than half of fault codes I saw ended up being just some stupid emissions thing.

The thing is, most of those emissions faults are just there because the EPA requires them to be there, and don't have much to do with the running of the car. I'd say the single most common fault code I've ever seen is an emissions fault based on the gas cap sensor. A gas cap that's not on all the way, or a broken gas cap, will sometimes throw a fault code.
>>
>>14980513
In that case it's an okay deal. Same advice for every dipshit buying cars, just make sure you check everything related to frame rust, sneaky body rust, and the engine before you buy it.
>>

I think so. There must be power to the fuse block, because some other things changed when I replaced the blown fuses. And I visually inspected all the wires around it as best as I could. Didn't take shit apart to really get at it with my voltmeter today, I'll do that tomorrow.

I'm now like 99.999% sure it's the GEM (earlier version of a BCM), and I fucking hate it, I'll be paying like $180 for it unless I get lucky and get one salvage.

...sometimes? All the lights on the dashboard are a little funny. Especially the high beams light, it's always on kinda dim, but when you actually turn on the high beams on it turns off. None of the lights is consistently on, all the time. And thanks, but I think I know what part I need, should be this http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/121528587235?lpid=82&chn=ps&ul_noapp=true though there's no way I'm trusting one from ebay or paying that much

Another thing I realized while testing tonight--the speedometer is affected by what I do with the other electronics. When I fuck with the power locks or windows, even though they don't work, they'll make the needle move on the speedometer. Same thing when I fuck with the climate controls, though they still work fine.

Is that another symptom pointing at the GEM module?

How do I know what RPM is allowed for what gear? Does going up and down in gear lower and raise the RPM by a set amount?

Going from like 5th to 2nd or 1st gear would blow the engine right?

For some reason I can't grasp this concept. Let's say I was parked like this face-in, if I cut the wheel from a standstill to reverse to the right (as denoted by the arrow) would I make contact with the curb?
>>
>>14982784
you would be better off backing straight backwards entirely, then going forward right.

or, you would turn slightly to angle car, straighten wheel to back straight, turn slightly again, and repeat until you're out.

you can literally test this out with hot wheels
>>
>>14982292
>How do I know what RPM is allowed for what gear?
You figure it out over time
>Does going up and down in gear lower and raise the RPM by a set amount?
Assuming no change in speed, yes. For example for a 1st to 2nd shift you may have go from 4k to 2.5k however a 2nd to 3rd from 4k may have you at 3k. In addition, the amount the revs drops (or raise if downshifting) depends on the current RPMs, using the first scenario again, despite shifting at 4k landing you at 2.5k, if you shifted from 3k you'd likely land around 2k; it won't always be a 1k or 1.5k shift between gears, you just need to git gud and remember. This varies by transmission but there's not much of a difference

>Going from like 5th to 2nd or 1st gear would blow the engine right?
Depends on a lot of factors but in all likeliness, yes. In general just don't downshift period (unless revs are around idle) until you learn how to rev match, that's extremely important for downshifting; the same principle also applies to upshifts for smooth shifting. Even knowing how to rev-match I wouldn't ever recommend downshifting more than two gears in one shift unless you're braking and resuming acceleration before hitting a stop.

General advice:
For starting from a stop, keep the gas consistent (1-1.5k depending on the car) and SLOWLY let the clutch out; if you buck or stall you did it too quickly (or the revs were too low) but remember you'll wreck the shit out of your clutch if you slip it for too long. By the time you hit the bite point (you'll know because you'll start moving and the revs will fall) you shouldn't be on there for more than a second, aim for too long over too short while learning, however.

Slipping the clutch: any time the clutch is between fully engaged and disengaged (foot 100% down and foot 100% off respectively), don't ever slip it when not starting from a stop and don't rest your foot on it or even touch it while not shifting.

(1/2) - Making a copypasta as I type this for future use.

>>14982292
Any RPM is allowed for any gear. Think about race car drivers who run all the way through the RPM band before shifting.

What you're more likely referring to is the synchronization of gears so that they mesh without grinding. WHile there are mechanical and now days electronic devices inplay to assit with this you should still try and match rpm properly for smooth shifts. While there are well defined rpm ranges when you should do this it can largely be done by feel rather quickly.

As to your other question does it raise or lower the RPM- yes and no. It does not affect the rpm of your engine but it affect the rpm of the tail shaft on your transmission. Since your engine is limited to a certain RPM range, say 600 to 4500 rpm, this allows for the same engine rpm to produces different wheel speeds dependent upon what gear you're in
>>
>>14982292
>>14982878
Learning the bite point: try slowly letting the clutch out in an empty lot, you'll get a pretty good feel for it that way and it helps immensely with starting from a stop. As this takes forever (read: burns your clutch) in lower-power cars, I advise against doing this for actual starts. I usually just slip it without gas to adjust parking by a few feet.

Braking: autists will tell you to downshift through every gear and engine brake; this is unnecessary. If you're expecting to come to a stop braking in your current gear until about idle then shifting into neutral is fine. Engine braking itself (simply letting off the gas in gear will slow you down a lot harder than in neutral) is fine and won't hurt anything unless you're being a tard and doing so at high RPMs that your engine shouldn't be at for long periods anyway.

Also see: >>14982891 for a less retarded explanation of RPM.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask but don't expect an immediate response.
>>
>>14982871
>you would be better off backing straight backwards entirely, then going forward right.

That's what I'd do normally in this situation, kind of wondering about the one I described though.
>>
>>14982878
>fully engaged and disengaged (foot 100% down and foot 100% off respectively),
Got that backwards, engaged is foot off IIRC.
>>
>>14982909
>try slowly letting the clutch out in an empty lot
without gas***

This basically just teaches you how to use the clutch for getting moving, the application of gas to this process is for real world use rather than learning. I should have typed this beforehand.

Do everything except the alignment. For the most part those are all pretty cheap and easy but labor intensive fixes, perfect to do yourself to turn a profit. But the alignment you would need to pay someone to do (unless you have the equipment in your garage, but I assume if you were that well equipped you wouldn't even be asking this). And it's not like the buyer can check the alignment when buying it. The rest, though, they can just crawl under the car and see that it's in bad shape.

Unless I'm being retarded >>14972878 is wrong

That is the stick that allows you to select between what we call low-range and high-range gearing.

>2H
Only the rear wheels are being powered, and the gearing is high. This is what you will be using most of the time, as it makes the ride smoother, puts less wear on the tires and drivetrain and is more economical, as well as making sharp turning easier as the front wheels aren't going to be "fighting" the rear.
>4H
Same high gearing, but now the front wheels are also engaged and you have 4WD. This is what you'll want to use when the roads are slippery but you will also be going at normal speeds.
>4LO
4WD with low gearing. The car will be very slow, but the low gearing makes it so that you can utilize much more of the tires traction as they will not slip as easily. You'll also be able to pull heavier stuff, as the car becomes "stronger" in a sense. This is a gearing you should only use in emergencies tho
>N
Neutral. Gearbox is disconnected.

The car may or may not have manually locking hubs. These have to be switched to LOCK or FREE depending on what you're driving with, where LOCK have to be on when 4HI or 4LO is engaged, while it should be set to FREE when in 2HI. If it doesn't have these types of hubs than it will do this automatically, but this will most often mean that the wheels will have to do a full turn before the locking is able to engage/disengage, which may not be ideal depending on the situation

I've owned a couple fleet vehicles before. They were delivery vehicles for a pharmaceutical company before I bought them. One was a Pontiac vibe, the other was a ford ranger. Both just a few years old when I bought them, but they both had over 270k miles on the odo. Bought the vibe for 300 bucks, the ranger for $500.

They both worked alright after a few minor fixes. I drove them for a few years and wound up selling them for a profit afterwards. If I wanted a short term vehicle again, I'd buy another. I definitely wouldn't spend much on one though. Sometimes these fleet vehicles aren't maintained super diligently, or problems are ignored if they don't affect the vehicles ability to do deliveries or whatever.

Why does this little Chinese bluetooth OBDII reader always fuck with my car when I clear a CEL?
What happens is my engine will almost die whenever I press on the clutch/put it in neutral. Then the revs stay relatively low for what it normally is in the first place. It somehow just fixes itself after a while, but I don't know the cause.
Anyone have any ideas? I don't have an idle control valve and this happens anytime I clear a CEL using the bluetooth ODBII reader. No idea what it would do on other ODBII readers.
>>
>>15001840
It's a CANBUS overload, those little fuckers sometimes spew signal onto the bus and the ECUs in the car have to deal with all of that at the same time. This can actually fuck up various components if you get unlucky, but it's pretty rare.

Get a higher quality unit from a respected company.

Is there no way for me to prevent this? It's the one on Amazon everyone seems to get. Would kind of suck to have to buy another. I might as well just go buy a traditional ODBII sensor if this is the case.

2.5" is probably about right. It's really up to your discretion, and what would work best for your engine. Check out forums for your specific car or engine as they'll typically know more specifics.

If it's a Ford with the 2.5L Duratec then 2.5 is what I've seen several reputable tuners recommend, but feel free to find your own specifics as to your goals. I think Tom at focus fanatics has some experience with the Ford 2.5, I can't remember his site of the top of my head, but that should get you started in the right direction.
>>
>>15009183
It is the 2.5L MZR Which is basically the 2.5L duratec.

I've seen people swearing by 2.5" and others saying you lose low end torque. I can't seem to find straight answers on forums. Given the fact I'm shooting for 200hp/210tq, 2.5" SOUNDS right but now I'm second guessing myself lol
>>
>>15009128
Sounds fairly normal, I wouldn't worry about it stalker.

>>15008622
Check all your fuses first off, then start worrying about the electronics themselves.

>>15008159
I've seen several folks do just that. I've wanted to do something similar for a while too. Praised for its handling (stiff body), the Duratec (05+ for the 2.0 or earlier for the 2.3 in the SVTs) takes to bolt-ons like a fish to water, and parts are plentiful since it's a common shitbox.

>>15009194
IIRC the 2.5 comes with variable cam timing (maybe variable length intake runners too), so you should be able to take advantage of the extra flow with a tune and hopefully minimize the loss of low end grunt. It may be a slight annoyance, but as long as you do more highway than city you won't notice. It'll get you closer to your HP goal than your torque goal AFAIK.

I'd personally go with the 2.5" as it'll give you more breathing room once you get closer to your goals.
>>

Poorfag here, my head gasket is leaking and I'm wondering if this shit (pic related), if used as instructed perfectly is a good temporary fix.

Lot's of people have told me it gunks up everything, but people who seem pretty savvy have told me if you do it properly it'll only adhere to the hottest points (where combustion leaks hit water?) and that If I flush after it does so I won't have any gunk whatsoever left behind except for the places it's heat-cured to to stop leaks.

What's /o/'s thoughts and experiences? I'm pretty certain it's snake-oil shit made to kill cars at the expense of printing money, but I'm no expert.

Would a bad shifter ball bushing cause enough play for the transmission to not hold 1st gear properly? it goes into 1st fine, even when moving, but unless I hold it, it flops around, and will occasionally pop out of gear if I'm not careful. vehicle is a 91 Hilux, if that matters. I already replaced the rubber seal that sits in the shifter hole, which did eliminate a lot of the shifter slop in general. i noticed that the little flat plastic bushing on the bottom of the shifter would rotate freely on the ball. not sure if it's supposed to do that or not.
