Hill starts aren't that difficult, seriously. Give it a bit more gas than usual and keep the clutch at bite point until the car is moving and then release the clutch. If manual starts aren't in your muscle memory, use the handbrake and fucking grow up

If there are no cars behind you, just keep your foot on the brake till you want to set off. As long as you're good at manual you'll set off without rolling back. If there are cars behind you and you're feeling conscientious, put the handbrake on. Not hard with a bit of practice.

That was my point. It's their fault for trying to park in your boot.
If they have a dashcam, they can prove you've rolled back, and some of the blame may be shoved your way.

>>
>>14970017
They don't even learn manual as a standard.
In most states, from what I've read, they're not even forced to parallel park in their driving exam.
It's just a simple 15 minute cruise.
>>
>>14970033
how many new cars are even manual as standard? most are coming with tiptronic ie auto.
>>
>>14970045
Most of them. At least in Europe.
You always get manual as standard except in some top engine trims and even then you can choose manual in most cases.

And anyways, it's always a nice thing to learn.

>>
>>14970070
Well, here you have to
>parallel park with no additional tries
>3 point turn
>go around a curb in reverse maintaining speed and distance
>successfully do hill starts without recurring to the handbrake
>know how to use a multi-lane roundabout
>3 small errors (includes letting your car stall) and you're done

And everything is done on the street. And examiners always choose busy as fuck streets.

>>14970091
Yeah, I don't exactly approve of many states' DMV practices, but, at the same time, it made my life easier. Cheap as balls too. $20 or so.

Most areas in the US aren't comparable to European roads though. Especially Arizona where I got my license. Mostly grid system roads, 12 lane freeways and plentiful, easy parking. A left on green is about the most difficult situation you'll encounter outside of city centers.

The desert roads are great though. 20-40 minute drive from most areas in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Rest of the state is filled with mountains and wide open, empty roads. About a 2 hour drive up north to forested areas that are even better, especially for unpaved backroads if you've got the car for it.

I preferred it to California. It's a fucking pain in the ass to drive to any good roads in the OC. Crawl through traffic and garbage freeways just to get to the one fucking 5 mile stretch of mountain road within 3 hours.

I get why some people use the hand brake method on hill starts, but what would you do if you were driving something with a foot operated parking brake? Like one found in most trucks and SUV's. There's really no way to use that on a hill start. If you were reliant on that method and then found yourself without a usable hand brake you'd be in for a tough time.

Stop the car on neutral, hold it with brake. Once you can go shift to 1st and move your foot from brake to gas, releaesing the clutch simultaneously. It's that easy. Just take some timing so that you don't stall / roll back wards.

WHAT.
You just try to get your car moving as usual and when you feel the car is beginning to fight against the brakes (i.e. car front begins to lift a bit) you just release this kind of on/off brake and move.

It's not that hard.

In most trucks that I've been in, it's released using a small lever that is just above the pedal, so you have to reach down in a way that is essentially impossible to do with your feet still on the clutch and brake while attempting a hill start.

My point is everyone driving manual should just know how to do a hill start without using the e-brake, it's not all that difficult.

If you need to use the handbrake you're doing it wrong. You should be able to hill start with a quick movement of the right foot from brake to accelerator coupled with appropriate clutch input.

I've been driving standard for 2 weeks now.

The first night I went out to practice driving for hours, and later I spent an hour doing hill starts because the route I take to work has a shit ton of hills where you WILL get stuck on a hill. I skipped the e-brake method and went straight to holding the clutch far into the bite point, almost to the stall point, and then switching my right foot from the brake to the gas pedal while the clutch holds the car there. Now I've found out that I can just quickly release the clutch to the biting point and feather around with the gas pedal until I feel the clutch and flywheel grip, then proceeding as normal. If you rev too high, the clutch slips, so it's a weird sensation having to give the car a little less gas. I know I could just release the clutch more, but I really like to try to get this piece of shit to ride as smooth as my Jag's ZF box. By the way, no tach, no speedo, bad selector links, and very touchy syncros going into 2nd.

The hill hold shit takes the thrill out of driving standard.

I looked into how a clutch and transmission/selector links worked before teaching myself to drive manual. It really doesn't put any more significant wear on the clutch than starting normally. The engine bogs down a bit, of course, but on a normal start, you are doing the same thing just faster. If anything, I would say it wears the clutch less than how most normies get a standard car started (revving the engine a bit and feathering the clutch). It's quickly synchronized to the speed of the flywheel and then transmits the load onto the gears once the car is fully in gear.

Wanna learn clutch control?
Try parallel parking uphill
>>
>>14976818
>>14976861
no. no not really.
see if you use your clutch to brake the engine is still spinning while the wheels stay still. all you are doing is grinding your clutch. its slipping any time the engine speed isnt synchronized to the speed of the transmission. anytime your engine is on and the clutch isnt fully disengaged, it's slipping. thats what slipping means. it means the clutch is rubbing and not gripping firmly. if the clutch is partially engaged and keeping the car from rolling then it is slipping. although you might have a take it easy hill start assist system you dont even realize you have and this is preventing you from rolling backwards causing you confusion.

>>
>>14977010
No, I know that it's slipping to an extent. I'm just saying it's less wear than most people put on their clutches with clumsy feet.

I don't even have power brakes, there is no chance of having hill assist in this shitty old Jetta. My newest way of hillstarting puts the least amount of wear on dat dere clutch.
>stopped on a hill = car in neutral, not touching clutch, foot on brake
>line starts to move = jam the shitbox in first, smoothly release clutch to biting point while simultaneously moving foot from brake to gas and finding the right amount of friction to get the fucker in gear as quickly as possible
I didn't mean to say that I didn't think the clutch wasn't slipping at all... it's always going to slip a little bit no matter what you do.
>>
>>14977024
nah there is a way to shift without slipping the clutch. it's called rev matching. essential in old cars that require double clutch because synchromesh gears didnt exist. also essential if your synchros fail. also if button clutch.
>>
>>14977059
Yeah but getting a car started requires at best a minute amount of clutch slip.
>>
>>14977067
>getting a car started requires at best a minute amount of clutch slip

no the clutch is not engaged during this period. the clutch connects the transmission to the engine. you hold the clutch all the way in to start the car.
>>
>>14977067
oh i misread that. you wrote minute. meaning you slip the gears every gear change. just rev match.
>>
>>14976904
I was being ironic, dimwit.
>>
>>14977112
I wrote minute, as in a small amount. When you are getting the car started, you can't rev match, bro. The car is stationary. I'm talking about starting a car that is travelling 0 km per hour. The clutch slips just a tiny bit. That's how a clutch works. I don't think you're reading my posts carefully or we're both very tired.

Advice for new manual drivers.
Step 1. Buy low-powered, lolnotorkz cheap af car e.g. Nissan Micra
Step 2. Go to the steepest hill you can find.
Step 3. Start.

Step 5. Return to said hill.

During my driving lessons i stopped at a stop sign on a nice steep incline, in the 1.2 shitbox petrol Opel Corsa with LPG, and i was gonna go, as usual, but it was kinda slow to get up to speed.
After i climbed to level ground i was like "wtf why it so slow" and my instructor laughed his ass off and almost smacked me over the head.... Turns out i was in 2nd.
