25 years and older is a "Classic" but it needs more than age, it needs a certain something to make it a classic. (Older than 1980 is definitely classic?)

My family has two different "classics". One is much more classic though.
The first is a '67 GTO 400 2bbl though. Pic related

the other is a 70 charger the previous owner dicked with. It has a 72 440 Magnum in it. IIRC he also swapped out brakes, the radio is from the mid 90s, the suspension is much stiffer than I would expect.

Just picked up a 64 Falcon on saturday for 1600. Going to run a full disc brake kit with booster so i had to order larger rims and tires. Will upgrade the ignition system to get rid of the points and get the tranny checked out because it wont go ibto park. Paint job and done. The interior is good shape right now
>>
>>14971590
I think you may have payed just a tad bit much. In my opinion I think it's worth maybe 1k due to the paint and tranny issue. But hey, if you can do most of the work yourself you got yourself a nice find.

What brake kit? I just ordered the manual Kelsey Hayes style brakes from Opentracker, I'll post pics of putting them on in the general. You really don't need them if you aren't going to go fast though, the drums work fine, the cars only weigh 2800lbs.

it's a 72 with a 302 and c4 tranny. pretty mild but it's a start.

i've just recently rebuilt the carb and i've yet to get the idle adjustments down. or have the time for it.

im still pretty new to all of this, so im learning as i go. didnt have much of a chance to learn when i was younger, so i bought the cheapest thing on craigslist and when from there.

ive done so much work to it now, i love the damn thing.

as for a DD, that's what im shooting for. its gonna kill me on gas im sure but it looks hella rad so it'll be all good, at least until i replace my reg DD with an XJ or something more stout
>>
>>14974630
Didn't know that thing has Manual steering, I'm surprised it's not power steering
>>
>>14972333
Would you recommend daily driving a car with drums on all four wheels? I may daily drive it during LA rush hour maybe once or twice a month. I figure I could probably get by if I am a super passive driver and let everyone cut me off, leaving at least 3 car lengths space.

Just not sure how dangerous it would be if I got cut off or something.
>>
>>14975143
Most compact/midsizes in that era still had manual steering in their base config

>>14975624
I have for many years in San Francisco and never had a problem. I don't drive passively, just reasonably. Just depends how good the brakes are, you can get a lot of power out of drums, even manual drums, if they are set up properly and taken care of.
>>
>>14975624
>>14975680
that being said, manual brakes is kind of lame. I highly recommend at least power drums and a dual master. it makes life a lot more pleasant.
>>
>>14975687
I will add to this, in high school I DD my '66 Land Rover no problem. And it has manual 4 wheel drum brakes and a single master cylinder. It builds up the strength in your legs.
>>
>>14975722
>legs
no, your right leg. it's completely possible, but power brakes are really nice.

What's the cheapest way to find and restore a c3 corvette? Or what's the average price going to be?

Google just kept trying to sell me stuff
>>
>>14976077
Depends on the condition you find one and what the old fart owning it will let it go for. I have worked on several that were junk in my eyes but still had the price tag of 75k or better.
Hell, one 67 I redid half the ass on went through the Barrett Jackson auctions for 80k. It was LS swapped, had 3k dollar rims and a shitty 2 coat paint job with stripes that weren't even lined up properly. The entire underside of the vette was just coated in undercoat or stainless paint over top of rust.
Took us ages to fix everything and the owner paid around 100k before it was even totally done. I didn't get to see the final bill.

A 63 convertible I got to do the majority of the bodywork on was sold to this doctor as "great" condition for around 50k and she was told it was never hit and was recently restored. As soon as the paint came off we found out the front AND the rear were not original and were grafted in. Also the chassis wasn't even matching.
It took months cutting out the horridly done seams and glassing in new ones esp on the rear. I spent a solid 2 weeks inside the wheel wells alone redoing everything and making new inside lips from scratch all the way around because there was none. Also the entire front end had to be redone because the dumbasses who "restored" it put it on crooked. I left the garage the day after I tore down the frame completely due to the shop owner going senile in his old age and unable to maintain a good working environment. But man I will never EVER buy a c2,c3, or a c4.
We also did a 79 from top to bottom owned by one of the major oil company CEOs down in Houston. Turn-key 327, custom suspension, 4 piston willwood brakes all around, custom cut torque-thrust-esque wheels, the works. I didn't see the final bill there either but he would drop by every couple weeks with checks of around 10-11k dropping it off like it was petty change.

Just don't take the job too awful seriously or you will get burned out. If you ever get frustrated or have something cool, be sure to vent to us. I wish I was still turning wrenches for a living...

Thanks man. It will be nice going back to working on vehicles, instead of just doing oil changes, drive line fluid changes and fuel filters.

This was the easiest I've ever gotten a job in my life, literally just drove there, handed in a resume and talked to the owner for 5 minutes. The only problem is that it's in the next town over, 35 minute highway drive. So I'll be commuting in the Thunderbird, good thing it gets 22 mpg highway

Got me a boattail this weekend for $800. Floor is solid, quarter panels have just a small amount of rust but is fixable. Worst part is where the half vinyl top was on it, all of that roof skin is rusted away. How hard is it to fabricate a roof skin? It looks fairly flat so it may not be too awfully hard.

This guy hear again with news
-is not a real z28, I checked the vin
-the front end and side panels aren't original since they're from a z28 and this is a sport coupe.

How low should I try to haggle guys? I have an 84 firebird that I wanted to engine swap but it's easier to just buy a already swapped car. I don't give a fuck that it's not authentic because it looks cool and it has the engine swap, but surely I should be able to negotiate the price down since this is the equivalent of engine swapping a v6 mustang and then calling it a Shelby amirite?
>>
>>14982863
Looks nice and sounds alright. Me personally, I wouldn't pay over 4,500 if the interior is perfect and engine is perfect. 6,000 is a little much since its not z28 and paint is just matte black (possibly spray can?).

Looks like a Ford Flathead V8. Piss simple to work on and you can get it running if it has good compression. The frame and wheel style looks to be 1940s Pickup, though that's debateable as I cannot judge overall length or see any body mounting locations.

There's no bad engine noise and my oil pressure is the exact same as before. Some guys on a Jeep forum said the gas in the oil might have just cleaned out the engine real good and where sludge/carbon used to be oil is getting through. I'm going to try and do 2-3 oil changes in a row to flush out any remaining gas and try some stabilizer to fill those gaps.

Like I said though it runs super smooth and feels like it has more off the line power, just it smokes now.
>>
>>14998520
Oh yeah I was also running 15W-40 so hopefully the gas didn't thin it out too bad. I think it only really dumped the gas in the sump when I put the dud power valve on. That one was leaking really bad and was pumping gas right down the vacuum line into the intake. It was running so bad I didn't even drive it and only had it running for like 20 minutes.
>>

Yeah I got the oil and every thing to do it but I took today off from working on it since it's running fine now. I've been going back and forth with it since Sunday.

Just by fixing that power valve it also solved a lot of other little issues I've been having since I got it. Choke making no difference when starting, punching the gas from a stop killing the engine, engine stalling when getting back on gas after a turn, incurable shaking at idle. It even feels like it has more power.

I never said that the Black Beauty was the reason. Just referencing what the '65 Imperial is best known as

My thing is I like the split grill of the '64 and that it was the last year that Imperials had the push button transmission. Though of all Imperials I want a '56 the most. A '64 will probably be cheaper to buy.
>>
>>15002243
Gotcha. And, yes, the '64 is a beautiful car as well.

Heck, I love almost every Imperial, but they're almost too impractical to drive. A guy I used to work for has been resorting a '65 or '66 Convertible for the last decade because it is IMPOSSIBLE to find several parts for the convertible.

Hence the problem with Imperials. There is really no aftermarket for them, unlike Cadillacs and Continentals. You needed make sure you buy a complete car before you start restoring it. At least then you have all theatres and trim to repair and rebuild.
>>
>>15002335
Parts are difficult for ANY full size Chrysler, let alone Imperial. However, there are quite a few good solid parts cars out there and the community for C bodies is excellent to say the least. CBody dry-dock and FCBO is a great place to find and swap parts. I've shipped guys heads for trim and mechanical odds and ends for the Fury and have always met friendly owners. Gotta love niche communities for that, at least with muscle cars.

Look closer at the hood scoops. 350 to a TH350. 500cfm carb, iron heads, manifold, etc. Worst feeling is he has a solid platform underneath (full billsteins and rear load assist airbags) but thought a shift kit would make him really fast. Did I mention the open rear end or the sub 3.00 hears out back? Combine that with a driver that isn't very confident with RWD and boom. It's clean and all stock inside, but im inclined to believe it has a malaise low comp 350 in it (think cheapo summit sbc) but has no emissions gear so who knows. He sure doesn't.

It could just be the stock Pontiac 350. I had one in a 69 bird, couldn't even get out of its own way.
>>
>>15005781
Most likely is. I was just comparing what it felt like to the 1500 summit crate 350. Just couldn't believe a 350 bird was that slow.
>>
>>15005781
It should be a Poncho 350 but who knows what happened over the last 50 years. Some even consider the Chevy to be an upgrade.

I love them. I've worked on many MG's, Triumphs, and Jags. And own a couple of Land Rovers. They are great fun to work on and drive, and can be perfectly reliable when maintained properly. I used to DD my '66 Land Rover no problem.

Yeah, I was really surprised at how well it's coping with my shit. It's the first car I've ever owned under my name as well as the first I've worked on (broke ass uni student and all).

Lucky that where I'm at, Brit cars are by far the most available and known classics around. Shipping always fucks me over though...

That's a bloody nice looking series 1 you've got there. Any general tips to running a Brit classic as a daily?

>>15008932
Wish I could drop the 3.5L V8 in, but the non-rubber bumper engine bays need significant modding to get it to fit... A shame 'specially since there's plenty of donor 3.5L V8s floating around in classic Rovers for cheap here

Planning to drop a supercharger in though, I've heard with a detune and a Mini supercharger it'll raise it to around 130hp and that glorious supercharger whine

That's a Series IIA.

As for running a classic British car as a DD, you mainly just have to keep the carburetor tuned properly and make sure the electrical grounds are clean.
>>
>>15009019
That looks to be a standard BMC A Series engine with a supercharger kit on it. They are nice kits and are made for most British sports cars.

>>15009022

Those kits are based on the Eaton type units I believe. They look so nice with an A or B-series engine despite being a very modern unit

Went to a small car show yesterday and, for everyone who thinks WE bitch about what is and isn't a classic, they had the cutoff at 1972. If it was made after that, it was in the "Other" category. I also realized that my Excalibur is as authentic of a 1930s car as 90% of the cars boomers have.

I'll post a few pictures of the only interesting cars as soon as I can edit down the size.

I absolutely hated the dash; generic gauges, and the boomer wheels were uninspired, but it was a unique vehicle that didn't give me fits of autism.

No, you are not.

The two things that I hate most on classic cars are cheap aftermarket gauges and generic wheels.

I don't mind auxiliary gauges under the dash, but leave the original speedometer in place and run a set of steelies with decent hubcaps.

No, I've held off on transferring the title into my name since I would've had to pay a 6% sales tax on the price of the car ($600) to get it properly registered.

But it occurred to me to just print off a fresh bill of sale that said I only bought it for $1k.
>>
>>15014117
Do it. Just say it was a rough roller when you got it if they seem suspicious at all. Then again, I use a privately owned License and Title co, so I avoid it all together. My state has a flat tax before 1995 of $25 on private transfers which also usually makes taxes moot for me.

Open headers will be way too loud. You could get away with straight pipes probably as long as they dump outside of the body. Will still drone on the highway regardless.

I think my cat is clogged. I ran it for a short time today moving it around in the driveway and the cat got really hot for the short amount of time I drove it.

Hey guys,

I'm trying to buy some tires for my Nova. About a year back, I checked on TireRack and found some classic looking tires with the red stripe (possibly BF Goodrich.) Now I can only find Hankook and some other chinese brands. I'd prefer to get an American looking tire with white walls or red stripe, but don't want cokers.

Any suggestions for a 195-205/75/r15? Or anything in that range? I'm not trying to go too big as I am still running manual steering and I heard it is a bitch to turn bigger tires.
>>
The other day, someone backed into the front bumper of my Excalibur. It put a little chip in the fender, a few gouges in the front bumper, and a few cracks in the paint at the base of the radiator cowl. They accepted fault for the accident and, tomorrow, I have to deal with their adjuster. I'm hoping that everything goes well.
>>
>>15014910
Correction: R14
>>
>>15014952
>damaging a fucking Excalibur

ha ha time for gouging
>>
>>15014910
So I was playing around with different sizes.

Stock was 195/75/r14 and those are about $50/pop from Chinese tires. 205/75/r14 has a whopping 3 tire choices at the same price.

I found some bf Goodrich radial t/a's for 205/70/r14 which too my understanding are shorter tires, but cost $125 a pop. Might have to go for those to get the nostalgic feel, but damn that price is killing me.
>>
>>15015068
Research says 215/60/r14 will fit too bf Goodrich radial t/a but 125 per as well. I'll be lucky if I'm getting over 200 HP with my 350, power glide, and open diff. So it might not even be worth it to get the wider tires, at least yet.
