Cheapest reliable car you can find and a decent motorbike for when you want some fun.

Buying a "fun" car on your P's is a bit silly imo, you're better off buying something mad once you're able to turbo/V8 etc.

whats should you do when buying used car (i don't care about engine on it)? how do people check under carpets for rust, does it just pull up (won't most people freak out if you ask can you pull up their carpets)? so far what i think is just look at engine bay areas like around firewall/cowl, under fenders and the underbody, then in boot like strut tower and near windows/pillars for any spots too.

also can you check for crash history/KMs done when it was registed online by searching VIN in aus?

>>
>>14962107
i've already read sticky, i don't care about the engine so most of that is pointless (besides the check for missmatched suspension etc.) i'm more just asking about VIN check and how you check under carpets for rust (since i googled before how to check rust, but i thought carpets were 'glued' in so can't really check, and owners won't want you messing with it to not buy it).. plus to make sure that what i said sounds right for checking rust
>>
>>14962142
because not everyone who's a p plater is a fucking 18 year old.

some people don't have a desire to learn to drive until later in life, then they realize what they missed out on and really get into it.

>checking floor pans
new cars dont rust anywhere near as bad as old cars. The last time i heard rust was common on floorpans were cars from the 70's. If you're really paranoid, tap the floor pans and if its solid, great. Never done a VIN check but it usually comes up on the license plate if the car is dodgy in some way. Just make sure the VIN number and compliance number are the same

Regarding crash history, just check panel gaps are consistent, paint isn't cracked, nothing is split etc. I used to own a VR Statesman that had a front end collision, which i found out later with research.Ffrom a few feet away it was fine looking until you got close and noticed the paint difference on the bumper to panels, the hood latch was dicky, the hood didn't shut properly and the radiator support rail was pushed in

ah ok. it didn't have license plate on it, and it's old car plus he hasn't registered for a few months. it's got fender damage too, which why i want to check if vin's do show crash history, plus the KMs on it are pretty low for how old the car is..
what kind of fender damage would mean you can't get it registered? because the one just looks like the nudged a car or something and didn't look that bad.. but haven't seen in person

i had deja vu messaging about it too. like i had a dream or something before where i messaged someone with exact phrases and it turned out to be bad later on after buying.

it's only cheap though anyways. i only want to buy for a car to work on to learn how to engine swap and other things like painting/fabricating, so if i fucked up it wouldn't be as bad.

It's not up to their discretion. It used to be the way over 20 years ago, but these days with public liability and safe working procedures there's a lot of red tape in regards to how police are allowed to apprehend. With radios and Polair, for the most part maintaining a high speed pursuit is redundant these days.

How does getting a car looked at by a mechanic? Should it be the seller or potential buyer that chooses the mechanic? Is there a mobile mechanic that can come out and inspect the car? I haven't had a car looked over by a mechanic before, any tips?

I've never done it but I'm assuming you call a local mechanic before hand and arrange it along with a test drive, tell the seller you want an inspection

there where probably more young virgins, but that should have dropped rapidly after some point
>>
>>14967128
why?
it's not like families were finding partners for their children
it's not like free love and liberal attitudes didn't exist
the only major difference is tinder+dating sites and feminism, which enable attractive men to get more pussy and women to not feel ashamed about selecting partners solely on their appearance

Pre-arrange with the mechanic for a time to bring it it, organise with the seller to either meet you there or lend you the car to take there yourself if they're nice.

Mechanic looks it over, prepares some sort of report/list of things they've found wrong with it and then you discuss with the mechanic for a rough idea of how much it would cost to put all the things they've found right.

Then you use that as a bargaining tool with the seller to knock the price down.

Everything is working perfectly when it's on the stand.

Moment there's weight on the rear wheel the brake starts dragging. Upon closer inspection the wheel isn't straight.

Plan to do fork seals, and change the bearings and axle. If there's still issues I'll have to tow it down to the race shop in Lonsdale and have the frame measured out.

It's hard to photograph but you might be able to see it here.

well got message today someone else bought it, which thought might happen cause I said it'd be 1-2 weeks till i could pick up

he didn't reply after I asked for the VIN/chassis number though.. which was weird because he was replying right before hand then just didn't reply anything at all, and then got message in morning that he sold it..

either way it'd be better if i just wait for a 4th gen since I want one of them more and they're better/newer.
will people ever not want to give out VIN/chassis number for some reason? Like will some people think you're trying to steal their number or think you shouldn't give it out or something weird like that?

I may as well, I don't want to buy a rust ridden Falcon. Think I could use the price of the inspection to bring down the price of the car a little, even if nothing shows up to be wrong? The car is up for 2300, yet the maximum price on redbook is 900 - 2000, I'm pretty sure the engine has been swapped out for one with less kms, but the body has 374000 on it. I think I could get it down to 1500
>>
>>14969729
Hope for 1500 but realistically you'll probably pay 1800-2000. Also if anything gets marked as being a problem on the list, use it as a tool to drive the price down since "oh yeah its got this wrong according to the RAA, so i'll need to pay to fix that".
>>
>>14969742
That's the Plan, hopefully it's not rust ridden
>>
>>14969757
A little rust is no big deal unless you plan on keeping the car for decades. If it's just a DD beater then don't worry about it.

But if it's auto and the list says there's transmission issues then run. The transmissions on AUs are notoriously shitty.
>>
>>14969757
rust is natures light weight kit.
>>14969729
just be honest with him, tell him you dont think its worth that much and make a reasonable offer. and never pay more than you want to

What are the legal guidelines on engine swapping?

From what I've seen engines older than the car it's going into is a no go?
>>
>>14969868
well you can't put new engines into older cars either

do an engine swap until the cops pull you over or you can painstakingly get a engineering certificate or something like that to certify that a professional has engineered the car to a high standard and it is structurally safe.

Im pretty sure you can swap evolution motors or the same engine into cars, so long as you update the engine numbers
>>
>>14969877
so basically... no fun allowed?
>>
>>14969879
im saying you can nigger rig something together in your garage between rego checks so you can drive a 351 corolla, what im saying is doing that shit legally is hard and expensive.

personally i would drive a 304 excel until i got defected for it, see how long that would last
>>
>>14969893
I take it getting an engineers certificate is as hard as fuck, I know for a fact no backyard job I do would be legal, I'd be learning as I go
>>
>>14969893
>>14969877
could you get a fine/impounded if you got caught with an engine swap that hasn't been certified?

do they check the engine number imprint and all to check it's the right engine?
>>
>>14969877
>>14969868
Here in SA, I think you have to send in an application form explaining the current engine displacement or something, the current brake and steering configuration, then some other information about the car. You'd also have to write on the form the information about the engine you plan to swap, the make of the engine, and I think stuff about the suspension.

Then I'd assume they send out a requirement list of what you'd need to change (size of brakes, suspension stuffs, etc) for it to be 'roadworthy'. Once the car meets the requirements and has the certs for the stuff that needs them. You'd then take it to Regency and they do a full on inspection of /everything/, if everything is legal you get the piece of paper that says you can register it. there's lots of fees involved. I can't remember everything I researched ages ago about it, but that's most of it I think

>>14969817
Thanks for the advice. If I buy it, would hooning through the hills to get home before I change the 6 month old fluids do any harm?
>>
>>14969868
Varies from state to state. SA pretty much doesn't care as long as the new engine is newer than the car and the displacement isn't more than 5x the weight of the car (3x if it's turbo).

>>14969893
>what im saying is doing that shit legally is hard and expensive.
There's a big loophole in SA that makes it super simple to legalize it. I imagine in Victoria it's stupid hard though.
>>
>>14970049
>5x the weight of the car (3x if it's turbo).
Does that apply to rotaries?
>>
>>14970014
Anyone who isn't retarded could spot an engine swap
>>
>>14969868
Run down:
-If you don't want to get an engineer's certificate, to the letter of the law, in NSW, the engine must be:
>originally available in the model of car
>less than 20% increase in displacement
i.e. R33 RB25 to RB26 is fine, as you could get RB26s in GTR
3800 to LS1 is not, as although you could get them, it's the displacement increase (but a cop probably won't get you on that)
>factory aspiration change is fine as long as everything else is swapped with it
i.e. FC RX7 n/a to turbo 13b conversion, as long as you fit the turbo brakes etc

Everything else needs an engineer's certificate. Yes, everything.
If in doubt, call your engineer.

Yes of course there are ones that you won't be anally annihilated as soon as you drive on the road. Yes of course there are ones that a cop won't even know is changed. The RMS might fudge it by accident.
But the safest way is to go get that bit of paper that says it's all OK.
>>
>>14970074
What a 3800 to ls1 is illegal?, I was planning on actually converting one
>>
>>14968852
hectic rice
>>
>>14970092
By the letter of the law, yes. But again you likely won't be pinged for it.
May as well just buy a SS tho. Cheap enough, and you get better bits
>>
>>14970074
isn't there something about no more than 20% power increase too?
though it's impossible to prove
>>
>>14970100
>May as well just buy a SS
you too mate
>>
>>14970100
Yeah I thought of that, in the end it is cheaper to just buy an SS

I wanted to swap a v6 to an 8 for the learning experience
>>
>>14970101
Yes there is, but I don't bother mentioning that since anything that's within the displacement amount likely won't make more than 20% more power anyway. And I've never heard of anyone being done for it.

>>14970108
???

>>14970114
If you want to do that, buy an old commo like a VH or some shit and do it to that. Much better option, and you end up with something actually cool at the end.
Plus almost no wiring, less strict emissions regs, etc
>>
>>14970119
>???
buy an SS
>>
>>14970124
Depending what happens E30 wise I'm considering buying a cheap fuckaround S13 or even a VR SS or something. The VR would suck wang but do good burnouts so eh. And no S13s are properly cheap anymore either, so I'm still undecided
>>
>>14970057
Rotaries are considered double displacement. So a 13B is considered a 2.6L under that law. 20B is 4L, etc.
>>
>>14970119
What will that set me back?, what is like getting parts?

350gt, its a much better choice

only downside is serviceability and weight imo

Depends on what you're looking for in a car.

G35 is a better DD, MX5 is a better weekend car.
