is it a jetta tdi?

>>14952939
yes

i would stay away if it's 10+ years old - i had a 2003 tdi that was really fun to drive, manual transmission was great and super responsive, and i got like 35-45 mpg, but it just got too expensive to maintain. unless you're skilled at wrenching or don't mind shelling out for repairs, i would avoid older volkswagens in general

I'm willing to spend about 7-10k. I want something fun to drive that gets good mpg and is dependable.

>dependable
Don't buy a VW then
>>

ok what would you recommend?

I'm guessing you're in America, so your options are probably different to mine. Usually I recommend pretty much anything Japanese to pretty much everyone, they tend to not have things break that should really never, ever break, like seems to be the case on VWs.
Shit like clutch pedals, for example. A clutch pedal should never, ever need replacing. And yet they do on VWs.

Isn't diesel a lot more expensive than gas in the states?

Yes Ameriburger.

diesel is about 10 cents more expensive so not much difference

I understand wanting a diesel because of torque, but unless you do a tremendous amount of miles it's usually cheaper to buy a petrol powered car - once you work out the higher purchase price of the car, (usually) higher maintenance costs, etc.
My MIL has a Holden Cruze (I think you guys have the Chey Cruze) TD, it's a badly thought out piece of shit. The particle filter fills up so it smells like diesel (to the point that I was looking for a leak) until you drive it on the highway, at speed, uninterrupted for 15 minutes.

Imagine a city commuter needing to to this on the regular. Ridiculous.

Anyway in summary I hate VWs. They drive nice and stuff, but you have to accept they'll cost you more in repairs on average than most Japanese offerings.
So work out how much you care about nice interiors or feels VS buying Hitler's Revenge and go from there.

Don't listen to that one anon. Every car will require work when it gets old. Unless we're talking engine replacement.

Mk4 golf/jetta/beetles are the goat vw diesel. Slow, but great. I'd either get one of those or I'd put that 7k down on a 2012+ tdi. Earlier models had hpfp issues. Either caused by misfueling or shitty American diesel. Might want to mix in an additive every now and then to keep up the lubricity. And manual is better than dsg in terms of running costs.
