25 years and older is a "Classic" but it needs more than age, it needs a certain something to make it a classic. (Older than 1980 is definitely classic?)

i wouldn't say timeless but for the 80s, they were ahead of their time. it looks like it would fit into the 90s seamlessly though.

It's very 70's though so I don't think it looks ahead of its time.

Just dropping in to say that American cars never looked ahead of their time. In fact for some period of time American cars existed in their own bubble seperated from the rest of the world, where landau roofs, sealed beams and railroad sleeper bumpers remained "in". Meanwhile this was released in 1967, two years -before- the first moon landing.

I will admit, the car you posted looks incredibly ahead of it's time. But you are wrong in the sense that there has never been an american car that hasn't looked ahead of it's time.

One example that comes to my mind is the Pontiac Aztec, it may not be a classic but it is the first thing I can think of when it comes to looking ahead of it's time. It's essentially a modern crossover of today.

Another example is the AMC Eagle, which was the precursor to the SUV/crossover
>>
Just rolled over 50k today. I'd have a beer if I wasn't on call.

In other news, body and paint looks like it will be happening next winter. $3200 to drop it off in November and have it back in March.

The Eagle also looks like a 60s TV stand.

/o/ is not that fucking slow man.
>>
>>14950150
Pros:
-Runs great
-Everything works
-Brand new interior
-New HVAC control thingy
-Don't regret buying it yet

Cons:
-Oil leaks (unavoidable), but I can deal with them
-One bit of dash trim came unglued
-Steering wheel is too fucking big
-Slow windows, bit of grease should do the trick
-Small amount of paint damage
-One thumbnail-sized patch of cancer near the sunroof

I went to go check out another 450SE that turned out top be crap and spotted mine at a dealer on the way back.
Only real plans are to deal with the leaks/windows, lower it about an inch, stick 16s on it, swap the bumpers for '73 US or Euro bumpers, and get rid of the god-awful wheel arch trim.

It's about as fast as 300 Turbo Diesel (83 models have newer M102 engine with 109 horsepower) so it's not that bad.

Even 200 diesel with auto box is drivable desu, maybe not in a motorway but on older highways with lower limits.

In Finland we have this saying "Köyhillä on kiire" (Poor people are in a hurry) so i try to live by that.

>>
>mechanical oil pressure gauge showing normal psi

>>
>>14956398
Thats even too stout. 670cfm or under for a mild to medium street machine is sufficient. A 750 in my experience is good for 500+ cubes or 426+ with a really hot cam or high compression. It would run fine with a 750 on it, albeit rich but its safe. Heck, 440 commando 4bbls used a 600cfm AVS carb and some trucks even got a 2bbl in the 450 CFM range. When in doubt, go a size up from stock (so for a Tquad that's 600, go to a 650 or 670 if you have mods). Remember as well, that adding headers and a good flowing intake can actually reduce your fuel requirement across the rev range because of lower temperatures. I'm not saying undersize your carb when using longtubes or anything, just that you can lean out your adjustments a tad more with those upgrades. I've ran a 600cfm on every stock or mild BBM I've had with 0 issues. I have a 750 now, but I also have to compensate for a bottle in the mid-high rev range (4000-6500 RPM) .
>>
>>14956462
If the mechanical is modern and verified good, then your idiot light sensor is going out. It happens, I went through it in the Plymouth once then went full mech gauges.
>>
>>14956468
its a plymouth aswell
gauge is a modern one and verified
I just changed oil and filter so I was kinda worried that it happens just at this moment
>>
>>14956611
Chance are a bit of sludge could have gotten into the gallery that houses the sensor. It should be at the back of the block in the dead center left up top. Simply unscrew it and check for blockages. If you want to clear it out, or have to, use an air compressor set to 90 PSI or less. This will help protect from aeration as opposed to running 160-180 PSI into it.
>>
>>14956648
thanks for the tip
I´ll check it out tomorrow :)
>>
>>14956152
I want an electric choke; while I currently live in Texas, I do drive back up to Wisconsin on a regular basis.

I'm also going to continue looking for a discount dual-sidedraft air cleaner so I can upgrade to the Performer RPM intake. I'll be getting different heads as well; I suspect the reason that they ported the "peanut" heads on the car was that they were concerned about anything else mating up with the stock headers.

I like to buy my upgrades piece by piece, but I try to make sure that they'll all work together.
>>
>>14956705
Of course. Have you checked CL for a used Edelbrock then buying the electric choke kit? I went that route on a Duster and got the carb for 120, 35 in rebuild parts, and 50 for the choke kit. Worked like a charm, but I don't use a choke anymore. Sure, its a bit harder in winter but it doesn't get driven much then. Midwest winters are a crap shoot. I'll keep an eye open at the swap meets for the side draft, but if you plan on keeping the Excalibur long term, id see it as an investment piece. And there's the fact you can always get most of what you spent later just looking at Ebay and such.

This was the only decent looking carb on CL:

https://houston.craigslist.org/for/5522923836.html

Though, I think that 800CFM might be a bit too much. The 750 may be overkill until I get the intake, but it would still perform adequately in the mean time.

I may just buy the side-draft piece as soon as I get the cash in hand from my visor cap sale.

I'm going to be moving in a year or two and, when I do, I'm going to pull the engine from the Excalibur and completely rebuild it with proper performance parts and a vintage aesthetic; sort of like this:

I was actually shopping for a saab 9000 when I found it. It is still as bought, but I am going to be redoing it to my standards. First is a proper detailing, some touch up paint, a wideband for tuning, getting a proper lockup control module for the a/t, regear, it must have 3.08 or higher rear and an open diff. Made the 450 mile journey home without a hiccup though, I am smitten.

Not saying you didn't, however more torque and horses in a full size is a good thing. I could hit 140+ with a set of 2.73s, but I like doing 1/4 mile passes so 3.55s it is.Everything being equal, the small block will be slower every time. I've built 318s and 360s and they are a good engine there's no denying it at all. But for sheer power and potential, nothing touches an RB engine from that era. Sure, my last 360 made 468/437 (single 4bbl, hyd roller, Indy heads, etc) but a bone stock pre smog 440 is destroying that torque figure and made 345ish hp stock. Simple math dictates 440 over 318/360 to me. You get a stronger transmission (727 vs 904), can hit 550 cubes stroked, and can even spin one to 7500 reliably with the right valvetrain setup. All for the same money as a 318 or 360 build while the only downside being you weigh 100-130lbs more. Fuel economy doesn't matter to me in a cruiser or muscle car, it never has. It's comparing miles per gallon to smiles per mile, and given everything else is equal, the SPM factor of a stock BBM is higher than a SBM to me.

Pic related, a 360 I'm building for my 280Z because fitting an RB is more of a bear than I want to deal with. And with this vehicle, weight is a factor.

>Comparing an A body to a C body.

Are you slow friend? Full size Chryslers benefit greatly from extra torque that comes from the higher displacement RB that an LA cannot provide. Again, there's nothing wrong with the 340 either, but you are also comparing the net of a 340 Six Pack to a 440 Single four with a truck cam. Try comparing it to the net of a 440 Six Pack or Dual Quad. The six pack is rated ad 390 HP gross with a net rating of around 320 conservatively.

And maybe this wasn't clear, I'm not downgrading the power or potential of the LA engine family. But dollar for dollar, you will get more power and more torque from an RB than any LA from that period. There is no question to this at all. The other factor is the car weight because he is looking at a C Body and a heavy one at that.

Pic unrelated.

Auto X. SCCA Solo specifically. If I go above that power level, I move into a higher classic modified class than I want to be in (Think 450hp and only require 200lbs more weight). Trans is a short ratio T5 with an adapter. Still looking for a good IRS rear used but I'm most likely going with a Strange unit, though the R200 in it can supposedly hold it. I'm torn on projects and the rust got too bad on the Datsun for me to keep using it for solo. I ran stock class with a stripped interior plus dash and bucket seat but was edging on not being able to run sue to the rocker panel condition. Pic related.

>>
>>14961418

>>

I disagree. I paid $300.00 for the boat when I was 14 and, although the motor cost me about $1,100.00 to get running perfectly, it's been nothing but a source of joy and one of my favorite childhood memories.

My father is still storing the boat for me at his house until I get around to picking it up and taking it to wherever I move to.

also, the motor is a '57; the previous motor was a '59 Evinrude that died after a few years of use;; included with the purchase price of the boat.

2) Freshwater engines are near identical to car engines

You basically repeated what >>14961467 said but added some shit you can find on google in 10 secs. You even said it yourself that freshwater boat engines are basically the same as car motors. So why would a classic car motor be reliable while its boating cousin isn't? You are also aware that people literally just convert car motors into boat motors and put thousands of hours on them right?

>>
>>14961454
Your "facts" are subject. To me, the $1,400.00 I paid for the boat and motor is cheap compared to the sheer amount of fun that it brought me.

I used it almost daily for over six years; for two summers, I used it to get to a job that I worked at on the other side of the lake five days a week.

That Mercury has never let me down.

When the Evinrude died, I would take the oars out of the oar locks and ROW the boat home; while my fun may have decreased to 0%, the only increased threat to my safety was a greater possibility of sunburn.

I've spent my whole life around saltwater boats. It's not very hard to keep an old 2 stroke running. The only concern I have with the boat I linked is transom rot, the state of the engine is trivial.
>>
>>14961760
I've sailed on saltwater; however, we were discussing small boats that could be towed behind classic cars; they're made for freshwater lakes. I know that my little boat is unsuitable for use on the ocean; heck, I'd never even take it out on one of the Great Lakes, but it possesses ZERO danger for use as a recreational boat on a lake that's only a few miles long and wide

Take it out and lay it in the sun on a warm day. Leave it for a few hours. Put it back in the car when It's nice and warm, that should take most of the creases out. If there are any left, use a hair dryer, or if you're daring, a heat gun. Be careful not to melt the carpet or catch it on fire though. Also, be sure to mark where your seat holes go, or anything else that has to come up through the carpet. Measure/mark twice, cut once. A mistake cutting means you either have to live with your crappy job or buy a new carpet.

Needs some more years for it to really qualify as a classic. If it survives another 30 years, it'll be rare enough and special enough to qualify. Anything from the 50s is certainly a classic now, regardless of if it was considered the worst shitbox ever or not.

I'm going to be checking out an 87 Nissan Z31 next week.

What would you guys consider a rare car? I ask because when it comes to Kouki Z31s (87-89) out of the 57498 produced only 1488 had standard option slicktop roofs. The Z i'm looking at is slicktop and the owner says its rare and is asking 2.5k obo. A bit too step for an N/A Z regardless of the roof option imo. Would you call 1488 out of 57498 rare? I don't care for total Zs that are slick top as 2 seater Kouki is the only body style I like.

The is the most basic optioned car too I believe. 5 speed, 165k miles, nothing special.

I've been reading up on flathead performance mods a little bit. I was going to shave the head to get compression up from 6.5 to 1, but I have read that taking too much material off hurts flow. Darn. Also read that you can port the block, but dont have a lot of experience porting cast iron and it's 60 years old so probably won't do that either. I've heard that rounding off the lip of the cylinder on the valve side helps, but can't find a whole lot of info.

Blog/shit post time:

In my last major adventure, I did finishing touches to my car. I took out the coolant temperature plug and proceeded to fuck my head up. I was working angry and frustrated.

I also extended my alternator wires to the left side since my 307 to 350 swap required a whole new pulley set. I pulled them from a junkyard on half day for like $20 compared to the $1000 that places were charging from chrome pieces of shit.

The alternator was lazily sitting there since the standard bolt size (5/16 x 18) was too big to screw in for some reason and all the other random bolts I had would not fit in there.

I also bought a belt for it. Turns out I needed 45" for the alternator, water pump, and balancer. I was able to run it for an extended amount of time since I finally have a working water pump to cool down the engine.

However, /ccg/ was right again. I thought RTV would hold the coolant in where I fucked up the head. It did not, oh well, worth a try.

After 5 minutes or so of running, I noticed she was starting to piss out coolant... :(

Any other suggestions on how to fix it? Previously someone mentioned a helicoil. Do they make heli coils this big? And I don't think it will be big enough to cover that spot I fucked up. And that will require getting a huge ass drill bit as well. If you look, you can see that I also drilled through the back of the threads since I was drilling at an angle due to the limited space...

Size is 1/2-14 NPT.

I'm thinking of welding some metal there, and tapping some new threads. Harbor freight sells a pipe npt tap and die set for $14.99.

Problem is, I don't have a welder and don't know how to weld... Thoughts?

>>
>>14968100

To be honest, to fix that properly your probably going to need a machine shop. Or at minimum the head has to come off. Welding cast iron is difficult to do properly as the area around where your welding has to be heated up prior to welding. Then after your done the head is going to have to be checked for flatness them machined if it warped.

Honestly it'd be easier and cheaper to go buy a new head.

I just picked up a 64 Ford Falcon on saturday, the body is straight and rhe engine is strong but i need to swap the entire brake system out because the guy had a leak and just tightened the adjustment in the drums til the whole thing just about siezed up.
So new rims and tires because the kit requires more space
Disc brake conversion
Ignition conversion
Paint job

Its still going to be under 5k when done
