Memes aside, is there any good reason not to own one of these if you know how to drive?
A well maintained turbo model is my realistic dream car, but id settle for an n/a model.

Also i hear that too, because of the pretty cramped bay yeah. But its a 4 cylinder toyota. Shits cake.

I guess this is a good thread to ask, NA SW20 with 230k kilometers (143k miles) on the clock yay or nay?
>>
Short wheelbase and mid engine isn't a meme, there's a good reason why they stopped making them. They don't handle as well as similarly priced competition.

Anyway, they're overpriced into the stratosphere. Body panels are hard to find, it's hard to work on and suffer from lift off over steer
>>

they seem awfully tiny

Maintenance is an absolute CUNT.
Even more so if there's a turbo involved.
Honest to fucking god, stay away.
>>
One problem I'm having with it is it being impossible to find one that's in good condition and has a clean title. Besides that i also cant get over the trunk being in the way of the engine bay, must be an absolute nightmare to work on.

>not wanting giant dual exhausts
Going fast isn't everything. A car has to look cool too.

Also, it's a legitimate strategy for keeping noise levels down without restricting flow. Given the same volumetric flow of exhaust gas, a larger total pipe cross section is going to have less flow velocity, which means quieter sound.

The rear end toes out when lift off. Toyota changed the suspension geometry mid way through production to reduce this. It's not a meme dumbfuck.

I've talked to a lot of actual mr2 owners, and basically what they say is snap oversteer is only a problem if you're shit at driving and don't know how to handle a MR layout. The combination of the cars layout, lack of driving aids and accessibility to idiots is what makes it dangerous.

Yay. Friend had the turbo'd sw20. He delivered in that thing for a year, and it's still running strong.
>>
>>14909456
It is though. It's nowhere near as severe as people think.
>>
>>14909456
The toe isn't what causes the lift off oversteer in the SW20 it's the camber. When you lift off the camber goes from negative to positive which causes the oversteer. Adding a little more negative camber helps reduce the problem as it take more force to get the suspension into the positive camber territory. The issue is too much negative camber makes the sw20 very twitchy when going straight at high speeds. The sweet spot is around 2.5 to 3.5 degrees negative camber any more than that and you start to affect straight line performance and any less and you start to get into the lift off oversteer.

I daily drove an sw20 turbo for 10+ years and there was only a hand full of times it tried to go around backwards on me. Every time it tried the roads were a little damp and I was caring too much speed into the turn for the conditions. It never did a full 180 on me although it did get awful close to 90 drift a few times.

>>
>>14908713
I bought one with 158k on it, up to 164k now. Had to spend 5 times what I paid on the car in maintenance so far, but that's mostly because previous owners neglected it a bit/it was consumable stuff that any car would need doing at some point.

Best 400 pounds I've ever spent teebeehaitch senpaitachi. You will be wishing you'd saved up for a turbo within 2 months though, they're fairly lethargic, especially the Rev 1 and 2 SW20s. At least the NA gets alright MPGs (27 city for me, 37 highway, 17 on track)
>>
>>14909456
>The rear end toes out when lift off
Do you even fucking know what toe out is, faggot?
>>
>>14909621
to my knowledge a LSD does not help that at all. The issue with the SW20 is the stock suspension geometry is not aggressive enough from the factor. Toyota was trying to hard to make it like a standard car so it ended up having some odd handling qualities to it.

the best setup for a 1st gen(91-92) sw20 seems to be lower it by 1in, add a little more camber, swap out the stock 14in rims for either the later model 15s or go after market with some 17in and change the tire size to 235 rear and 205 front. With those changes you can get rid of most of the odd quirks with the SW20 handling.
>>
>>14909632
>http://norfolk.craigslist.org/cto/5533232142.html
unless he swapped out the engine cover that is not an original turbo model. The turbo models should have a 2 raised humps in the middle of the engine cover. N/A models were flat all the way cross it.
>>
>>14909742
Well, it should handle all the quirks, aside from the ones inherent to the layout

While they are hard to work on and not very practical in terms of space I drove mine for most of the winter in Edmonton with summer tires. Never had any issues in the rain either. Only times it ever got sideways was when I wanted it to. A buddy of mine dailyed his for the entire winter, he had studded tires though.

Pic related my 1990 jdm turbo

I figure once I get up to ten grand saved, I can get whatever I want. But up until that point, I'm carefully inspecting every $700-$3000 car I'm interested in, and doing a little research.
Sell me on the MR2, /o/. I want to learn more about it. Where do I begin for research? Is there a good introduction video about it?
A good project series on YouTube?
Is there good information about it online? Where can I get it? I'm keeping an open mind.

Just Google mk2 mr2 buyers guide, snap oversteer, mr2 ownership etc
You'll learn what these cars are actually like pretty quick. The snap oversteer thing really is just a meme.

I can deal with snap oversteer. That can be corrected with good tires, or a bag of sand, or not sucking at driving.
