Fuckin diffs, how do they work?

Chevrolet made some damn good educational films about automotives in the 30s. I have never seen anything better than that
>>

The locking part of LSDs, though...
Also how did spools work in place of diffs?
>>
>>14900378
on clutch lsds the clutch plates mesh together on worm gear lsds the worm gears turn the opposite direction which from the relative perspective of the wheel means it turns slower spool means it's locked just the axles connected directly 1:1 to the ring gear.
>>
>>14900378
spool locks both axle shafts together, lsd, limits the differential in speed of the axle shafts, lockers act like a spool under power and an open diff during coast situations.

Crap, that embedded shit doesn't support playlists.

you throw some weld in and go sideways, thats how they work.

This is just a quick conceptual overview, there's a lot wrong with it but it will give you a general idea of how things work.

A spool is just a ring gear welded to an axle. The wheels can't spin at different speeds. A locking diff can switch between locked (spool) and open.

Clutch type LSDs have sort of a split case, with a pin through a hole between the two sides. When you put power through it, the pin wedges the sides apart, which locks together the clutch plates. The harder they're meshed, the less slip it allows. Lockup characteristics can be adjusted with clutch preload, as well as the shape of the pin and hole.

A viscous LSD has a bunch of plates attached to each axle that never touch. As the axles begin to spin at different speeds, the plates churn the fluid, which becomes more viscous and makes it harder for the faster axle to continue turning faster.

Helical (Torsen) LSDs have a gearset inside. It's hard to describe the kinematics in text only, but basically it operates based on the principle that a worm gear can turn a spur gear, but not the other way around.
>>
How many miles would a typical clutch lsd last before the friction plates wear out?
>>
>>14900723
Street miles? Maybe 100-150k or so. Track miles? It's anyone's guess. Either way it's going to depend a lot on what the vehicle is and how it's being used.
>>
>>14900760
Thanks. I was thinking street use with low to moderate levels of hooning.
Thinking about bying an aftermarket unit to replace my open oem diff.
>>
Fuck that, how do torque converters work?
>>
>>14900783
they don't
they waste everything

Noice.

less than that. probably like 70k.
all they need is to be shimmed.

OP is a torsen diff

Why didn't any car manufacturers think of this anymore. I absolutely hated sitting in the middle rear seat

Gotta love the 30's

My main problem with diffs and gearboxes is figuring out which gears turn freely and which gears are fixed to the shaft.

I see, 100% lock isn't so great for drifting, though.

why is that?

how does the ring gear connect to the shafts and spiders?

i have an electronic diff. lock on my 20 year old truck and i hope to hell i never have to use it

Fucking cacodemons, how do they work?
>>
>>14899306
That's not just a diff, that's a Torsen Diff, a torque biasing differential.

As a Mercedes Mechanic I could easily explain how it works... it works well.
