I'm finally getting some more work on the 240Z done; I pulled the center console out of storage and tore it down to its smallest little bits and have been cleaning, polishing, and repairing everything on it

HAVE A GUIDE M8!

The patent pending Dat L24 'Valspar Enamel G.O.A.T. Paint Job for Non-Plebs ©'

>If you're painting a car in the DIY mindset, what you want is a single stage, oil based enamel paint.

>Like for instance Valspar Tractor and Implement Enamel.

>It's inexpensive, it stands up to UV light so it won't fade (unlike Rustoleum), it's single stage so no worries about pealing clear coat, and it is durable to the point where you can throw rocks at it and buff out the scratches, or even key it and buff it out (in certain instances). And if you need to repair it? Break out the extra paint you have, and go crazy!

>Pic related was painted with the stuff.

>Here is a very in-depth guide on painting with the Valspar enamel, and yearly updates on how it's holding up (after 6 years, it still looks like new according to the OP)

>Are 300zx also Datsuns?
technically no, but Datsun's are Nissan's.

And the Z31 chassis was the last Fairlady chassis that had a straight 6 in em (the 200ZR package shoved an RB20DET into it, although the option was never available in the U.S.).

So, because of that, I'm going to call them the last Datsun/Z.
>>
>>14896260
200ZR came out after '86, Datsun only existed pre-'86

If you want one, there was another one I saw with my 260z, it's a 77 280, would just need front fenders, and some rust patches. The owner wants 500 for it, it's in sfbay.craigslist.org under "Datsun"... Should come with extra diff and motor too.
>>
>>14908537
>sfbay
That's the only problem. Getting a car from America to Canada is a pain. I'd have to do import papers and such.
Well, it seems I'll be working with import papers or trying to remove lots of rust. Gonna shoot myself in the foot either way.
>>
>>14909128
Lol, Its not hard to import an old car into canada. What are you talking about?
>>
>>14909500
You're right. I only have to ship the car to the border, claim it, do paperwork on it to get it here, then to register it I need to go through the whole importing process. Which is paperwork and taxes.
It's a long process and can be pretty expensive with the depressed Canadian dollar.

shit guys im hella hyped about this 260, need to get my motorcycle finished ASAP so i can start working on the car.... almost debating selling the bike for more fundz.

I think im also going to try to wire up a Raspberry Pi as a car computer for it, rather than just getting something off the shelf. The only downside is that i want the display to be able to be tucked into the dash like a single DIN foldable unit. Might have to design a little rail system for it, but it should be doable. would be cheap too, possibly around 100 bucks? The nice thing is that RPI3 comes with WIFI + bluetooth built in, so it should be easy to get the OS to have a constant airplay / bluetooth audio setup going on.
>>
>>14912305
best advice: fuck the car computer for now, and focus on good wiring to hook the fucker into. Buy an EX-Wiring 21 circuit universal wiring kit, 'cause you're gonna need it.

How bad is the rust?
>>
>>14915627
From what i can tell it looks pretty straight. Though the under carriage will have rust im sure. kansas weather kills our cars.
>>
>>14915625
They are terrible to work on. Absolutely absolutely terrible. Parts are rare as fuck. Even o-rings you cant get from a store but need to order them online. You need to do an engine lift to get at the knock sensor, turbos or egr. The intake plenum prevents access to spark plugs even and touching anything in the engine bay will require a new wiring harness. The smog pump and egr will have failed by now so need a delete.

Ask me anything.
>>
no more electrical gremlins!
now waiting for my goddamn amazon order to finally show up so I can crimp in some new bullet terminals!!
>>
>>14913167
Thanks, ill have to look into that, i got work on the bike done today, im hoping ill get the dash removed this week, or possibly next... have a wedding next week to go to.
Does this harness remove the fucking power running through all the lines, i fucking melted part of my 240z's headlight switch that was a bitch to fix (actually not really just some ingenuity). Ill look into that relay system that someone makes on classicZ car, and see if i can replicate it.
>>
>>14916239
you can also try http://vintageconnections.com/ if you want to use origional connections. I bought the "6.3mm" pin remover tool, its bretty solid.
>>
>>14916252
dude, it's a whole new wiring harness from the ground up. You rip out the main harness (not your dash's harness though) and replace everything. All new chassis wiring from headlights to tail lights.

And yes, you NEED the headlight relay system. Without it, you are gonna plain die.

Here's some reading for you:

http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/65812-painless-or-not-wiring-harness/
>>
>>14916305
Oh shit no way, thats sick, ya ill have to look into that, and also check with my accountant if i can dump that much money into it :p I have hella wire left over from when i redid my motorcycle harness.......

http://www.zhome.com/DaveRelay/DaveBuild/DaveInstruction.htm

another instruction set....
>>
>>14916339
use your left over wiring to make the relay (if it's the appropriate gauge wiring, that is). Then if you want, you could rebuild the dash harness piece by piece.

What's more important than new wiring though is clean contacts. Bad contacts = no go.

So, read this, and make your decision whether or not to clean up and re-use the old connectors, or buy new ones.

It will run but it loses power and hesitates over 4k RPM. I'm pretty sure the problem is the TPS, the 60mm TB came with a different TPS that doesn't seem to work the same way as the original TPS? My thought is the ECU doesn't know to enrich more at wide open throttle because the TPS isn't telling it that the throttle is actually open... I'm going to go through and run component checks on all of the EFI sensors to find out.

>>14927204

Seems like they are fine, the engine starts up and idles fine from a cold start, just doesn't work properly at high RPM but I'll check them tonight. I think the FSM recommends holding a screwdriver to it and listening for the clicks of the fuel injectors, that sound right?
>>

>>
>>14930019
>>14930033
I'm not talking about the age, I'm talking about the mindset.

Normally (but not all the time), the owner of an S13 or S14 wants to be an "LMAO JUST DRIFTED IN THE 7/11 PARKING LOT #stancenation #hellaflush" type of person, and their vehicle is mostly their tool. They crash it, they scratch it, yada yada. They normally aren't that into the vehicle itself (look at the owner turn over rates), but what they can do WITH the vehicle. Be it whatever cheap egay crap they can slap on, to whatever corner they can drift.

And there is nothing wrong with that.

But what I see with Datsun owners (at least on here) are that they care about the vehicle more than what they can do with it. They care about its history, it's stylistic cues, trouble shooting the mechanical aspect, and what it does to them. But mostly, and this is by far the largest thing I've seen, is that they care if it makes other people smile. Not hate it, not envy it, but smile.

Again, generalization, but that's what I've seen.

It's like the mall ninja's compared to the milsurp collectors. Both have their place if they want it, but they generally don't belong together, because people will butt heads.

Oh yeah that TB is probably from from a KA24 and the sensors are different, if it's the one without the water jacket L pipe underneath it, they used the right one for the swap. I think there's a hybridZ writeup for the sensor (involves cutting or adapting the correct post on the sensor side). If it cuts out at 4K while in neutral it's reading the degree position wrong and not adding fuel.

Yeah I can see that, I actually like that there is a higher cost of entry (for clean) or needs rust repair for Datsun cars. I also started off hating v8 swap and sr20 swaps, but now I just take the stance oh you ruined the car and increased mines value in the market.
>>
>>14936966
How do you feel about having a built l28 with tripple side drafts and headers? Does that make it less valuable?
>>
>>14936979
>Does that make it less valuable?
that's actually period appropriate modifications that are all reversible, so..... yeah. No.

V8 and SR swaps all require cutting the cross member, thus permanently modifying the vehicle, and lowering its value.

Meanwhile period correct, reversible modifications can actually heighten the value of a vehicle.

Roll the stock fender flares first and get coil overs before you jump to cutting metal. The coil overs and rolled fenders should allow you around 305's

I think part of it is that all of them I see are sooooo damn nice / restored that I dont see it as relatable, where an average old 510 seems like something I could daily and not feel bad.

A guy picking up slack working minimum wage in the U.S. can afford one (a shit one, mind you, but still an S30)

Don't feel bad using a vehicle for its intended purpose. Driving a vehicle is what it is MEANT to be, doing anything besides that is a disservice to your vehicle.

My car could use a paint job and right now it's grey. Originally my car came from the factory with 216 white paint. I have always wanted a red car. Would not going back to the original white hurt the value of my car?
>>
>>14957159
I mean it's already panted the wrong color, so you might as well paint it red. It'd take the same amount of work to turn it white if it's painted grey or red, so go for it.
>>
>>14958527
The grey was a bit of a lazy/cheap paint job. The interior of the car is all still white and so is the engine bay... As soon as you pop the hood you can tell its the wrong color. Basicly it only needs an exterior spray to make it an all white car again.

Question. My 620 pick up with the l16 is sounding a bit tickey right now. If I run it and hold a screwdriver to my ear and place it by each cylinder it's fine and if I place it on the mechanical fuel pump it ticks fairly loud. Thing is once I've driven it a bit it gets pretty noticeable. Anything I should look for or change?
>>
>>14961925
replace the mechanical fuel pump for an electronic one. It's cheap, it's easy, and it cuts down on parasitic loss.

But that may not be the source of your ticking. For that, I'd check valve lash.
>>
>>14961980

nah no reason to pull the head and do a valve job, just check the lash (unless that's what you meant)

So I just got a 6-1 header off Craigslist for my 78 280z.

I wanted to go ahead and do the twice pipes exhaust on my car but when I got on the msa website the kit is only ment for 3-2 headers.

Is there a way I could still use my 6-1 header with the twice pipes kit? I know that a 6-1 header has better performance than 3-2. but it seems like I should just put a resonator and exhaust tip on and be done with it.

Any ideas of what I can do? I really like the duel tip look and the sound of twice pipes.
>>
>>14964018
Uhhhh return it and buy the 3-1 header kit?

Or return it and go full cheap bastard and get a 2.5" straight pipe with a glass pack at the end, and call it a day.

>>
>>14964018
buy a y-pipe collector?
>>
>>14966795
I kinda see what you mean as far as being a poser... The factory 2" exhaust is much too narrow so typically you want to get a larger diameter pipe something around a 2 1/2" pipe or minimum of 2 1/4" if you want the whole system to actually flow. But the best headers for performance are the 6-1. The collector is more than the 2 1/2" so It needs to be broken up or I could run a massive almost 4" pipe down the car. I would prefer to break it up into a duel exhaust setup of two 2 inch pipes into a duel tip.

I do understand how wanting duel exhaust for the looks is a little faggoty but I just cant stand the rice look of one massive tip.
>>
>>14969295
then get some Ansa tips for your 3" pipe.

Frankly, anything over 3" is just dumb, so yeah a giant rice cooker huge tip would be stupid. But stick with 3" pipe and a twin tip end.

I think a 6-1 header > 3" pipe > 18" glasspack > twin tip setup would be wicked, and sound godly under load.

260z resto guy here...

Hard to put a price on all of it. I had a Z in decent running condition but it went through phases of improvement. I'd say the first phase to replace all the basic cooling components, body filler, sanding equipment, paint and to get rid of surface rust in addition to oil and maintenance items to make it reliable was probably around $3000.

After that was a suspension and handling overhaul, that was probably in the ~3500 region for all the new components, but I do the labor myself. I'd say from the state I got it, to where its sitting now, probably around 6500 total on top of the purchase price, but I picked the Z up for $4900.
Also I've been away for a bit, but good news! I got the electric 280zx distributor running so no more points! This was a huge upgrade in performance, the car just feels right. Revs to glorious 7krpms no problem and after pulling the spark plugs, there is a way more complete burn on fuel. Couldn't be happier with this mod.

Next up is solving the fuel vapor problem in traffic once and for all. I have a whole new fuel system coming in to overhaul everything and yes, I picked up a replica Datsun competition hood which was a factory option back in the day. Pretty exciting!

Hey man, you never know till you try. Offer him $1,000 cash, but have the bills be a big wad of $20's (seems to impress the cash strapped more than ten $100's). But if you want the car, bring a hit more. NEVER asking price though, always bring a bit lower.

And don't say "I only have $1,000" unless you do, grab the cash and say "I've got $1,000 in my hand here". It is not a lie, it is a statement. Don't mention the other $250 you have in $20's in your pocket unless he tries to play hardball, and you really want the car. Sellers like a motivated buyer who has the cash right there.

See, the S30 has a chapman strut with rear A arm, where the S130 went with the semi trailing arm like that of the early 510s. The S130/510 rear suspension works alright, but is inferior to the early S30 setup, due to the fact that the semi trailing arm setup has huge amounts of squat under acceleration which results in camber & toe changes. The most likely reason is that the semi trailing arm setup allows for a lower floor, hence, more cabin space. It's all about packaging, not about being better.

So that, and the weight of the vehicle in general, is why most people dislike them. If you want a comfy car, go S130. They're good cars.

So if I buy a 2+2, would I be well served if I take out the back seats and make the whole back into a trunk? I don't need seats, but extra trunk space would be fucking neato.
>>
>>14981112
>take out the seats
It's not that simple m8
>>
>>14981120
It's not simple to do a seat delete?
That stinks. I'll look up what would be required for that idea.
>>
>>14981123
The seats fold down, so you have plenty of trunk space. I have tons of shit back there.
>>
>>14981129
A cursory search shows that a few people deleted the rear seats in the 300zx. As for a 2+2 s30, that may be a different story.
>>
Just got home.

Dude you should get a 280z 2+2. They are great cars and if you lower it and put flares on it looks absoutly amazing. I have a friend who is supercharging a 76 2+2 and I'm jealous of his car even though I own a regular 2 seat s30.
>>
>>14981049
Yeah i'm definitely getting a s130. But god I love when cars squat. Sexy af.
>>
>>14981247
>>14981129
Could I ask /ddt/ a big question?
Could I get the length and width of your z trunks? I know the back slopes, so it would be difficult to estimate the total volume of the back.
For those of you who have a 2+2, fold the back seats down.
Tell me what year and submodel you have as well.

I want to see precisely how practical a z car will be for my active lifestyle. I'm mostly looking from the 70s cars up to the 300zx.
>>
>>14981408
I\ll try and have the measurements tomorrow.
>>
>>14981408
I can try with the '72.

But just so you know, a regular S30 coupe can fit a small surfboard in it without the hatch bring open. No passenger, but it fits.
>>
>>14981849
Can comfrim it fits a surfboard

10psi : ^ )

It'll last quote awhile at that pressure. Just don't go cheap on your fuel, run premium so you avoid knock.

This is good news. Thanks for looking out for an anon. I don't think anything I do will require something as big as a surfboard.
>>
>>
>>14984838
Yeah I know, lot of the NA-T guys run 12psi on 93 but ive got a fairly conservative tune just to be safe. Trying to work out a lean idle right now, but afrs are perfect under throttle so I am assuming its just an exhaust leak. Crazy fast though, makes me wanna buy an s30 to swap a vg in
>>
>>14986713
Well the VG's seem to handle boost quite well, and make gobs of power.

This is stock, from intake to oilpan.

It runs 9's.

Yeah thats Michaels car, he blew it up tho lol but it was a stock NA motor making like 600+ to the wheels im impressed at how long it lasted. Stock motor vg record is currently 783whp and thats on a $150 junkyard NA motor. Tuning tech has come a long way, but its only been recently that boosting non turbo motors has gotten popular. My build makes the best power delivery, super linear all the way thru and its got a lot more torque down low from the higher compression

>but its only been recently that boosting non turbo motors has gotten popular.
Maybe for 300ZX's, but it's been a popular thing in the automotive world in general for quite awhile

Got a pre-interview drug test tomorrow for a welding job.

....this is either good news or bad news.

Opinions on making a Z-car toe-gay machine?

Need help diagnosing a prob. Got a 1983 Nissan/Datsun 4x4 with a computer controlled carb. It starts up fine and dandy and idle around 900 rpm. However if I increase throttle ever so slowly I reach a point where my idle will fluctuates 500ish rpm. It usually happens when I throttle up to 2000 rpm. (The car is still in neutral) but if Increase the throttle, it seems to straighten out around 2500 rmp. Wat could cause this. Anny ideas? Video on the way.

Check all the rubber hose you may have a vac leak. Check fuel lines/filter you may have clog. kill yourself for being a pussy and not driving a cummins hd ram instead
>>
>>>>14990610
Thanks for the tips. I'll hold of on killing my self for now though.
>>
>>14990454
vacuum leak or fuel delivery problem.
>>
>>14990454
You either have and IAC valve that needs cleaned or replaced, or you have unmetered air coming in.
>>
>>14992721
That's what a friend of mine suggested, could it be a blocked passage in the carb or something
>>
>>14992721
THAT'S WHAT I SAID ALREADY!

Leaving for Japan in two days lads, gonna try to find a z432 style 10k rpm tach while I'm there. If anyone wants other small parts I can try to find them, just keep it stuff I can fit in my bag
>>
>>14993738
dude, I'm just agreeing with you there. Calm the hell down.
>>14993768
Ooooh, I'll have to think. This could be good.
>>
>>14993768
Gonna need you to go pick up some watanabes and fender mirrors for my s30. JDM 240z taillights if you can find them.
>>
>>14994154
okay fine I'm calm
>>
>>14994156

Fender mirrors maybe, lights will depend on cost

Anybody here got an s130/280Z?

Looking for dimensions on the rear hatch (or rear window dimensions) because I'm looking at some "Venetian Blinds".

They are not offered for Z31's and would like to know if they are somewhat compatible.
>>
>>14994276
Gonna tell you that's prolly a no, mon ami.
>>
>>14994276
I know for a fact that S130 rear hatch glass and Z31 hatch glass are sizes differently.

....but I don't know how much.
