Depends on what you define as better.
I spanked him on a kart track, can wheelie much longer, corner harder, and am better at threshold braking.

He rides much slower to keep a greater safety margin on the street, but I see a lot of bad habits in him. He takes bad lines (see >>14870930), locks up his brakes, target fixates (see >>14870841), and generally rides like he's never had any training or practice.

I ride closer to my limits which scares him, but I make sure not to push myself or my bike to the limit when I'm anywhere unsafe. I still have little chicken strips on my rear tire. Today he gave me a talk and brought my parents in for an intervention about going fast.

The difference is I actually work to make myself a better rider and learn how to handle tough situations instead of building up shitty habits that will lead to me running off the road.
>>
Just rode about 101 miles in the driving rain storms going thru texas right now. I am fucking soaked. It was a good weekend but none of the pictures I took were really /dbt/ related so I won't shit up the thread.

Either way, I found that blasting loud-ass music and waving at people as you ride through a windy downpour makes it feel way less scary.

Hey guys. Long time lurker, first time poster. I finally got around to uploading my riding trip in Japan from last October.

Keep in mind, I'm a regular nobike and I haven't had much practice at all since getting my license a couple of years ago. And I also put music on top of the video because I had no mic hookup so it was all just wind noises.

Hope you enjoy it bros! I'll be around to answer questions if anyone's curious about anything.

By opening the engine and checking the valve clearance with a measuring shim. lol The only real way to check if valves need adjustments.

If they kept receipts of a valve clearance or other maintenance done on bike, that would work, but you can't expect anybody who owns a motorcycle selling it on craigslist to keep receipts for some reason. I've no idea why it's so hard to keep receipts in a folder with the title.

>don't smash the brakes
The MSF instructor was adamant that you don't fucking brake at all ever while you have the bike leaned. Obviously this isn't practical. Do you really never, ever ever brake during a turn? I understand why it's a bad idea from a physics perspective, but sometimes you have to.

>>14871598
That's way above my skill level for now. The one I posted is really fun for me. I was actually surprised to see it on the map because I thought the turns were much tighter. Visibility is also somewhat limited because it's heavily treed and has a number of tall buildings. The traffic lights are also good practice at being aware.

One day I'll ride stuff like that. But for now, I know my limits.
>>

>don't brake while turning
The issue comes from grip. The tires have optimal grip when they're doing ONE thing. They're either gripping laterally, or longitudinally. Doing both drops grip exponentially. The tires can't compromise. That's why FWD cars tend to peel a lot easier when turning and accelerating quickly compared to RWD cars.

>Do you really never ever brake during a turn
You can, and it's called trail braking. I use it when I'm attacking the twisties pictured in >>14871630 to tighten up my line, since most of the turns are low-speed. If you ever need to do it in an emergency situation, you've really fucked up. Only use the rear when turning as well, maybe a bit of front if you're really going balls out, but this is more reserved for the track. If you're ever in an emergency braking situation while leaning and can't straighen out, go light on the rear brake, use it to tighten your line a tiny bit on a swerve, then straighten and brake.

>skill level
If you really want to git gud run some low-speed corners and try to take them fast. It's a lot more fun than trying to get a knee down going triple digits on the street, especially if you have something like a heavy literbike.
>>
>>14871630
I think you and I just have different ideas of what constitutes twisties.
>>
>>14871650
So 100% of the time, you straighten up before you brake if you have to emergency stop.

I'm not calling you wrong at all, I'm trying to learn. I'm fine with following through and not rolling off the throttle during a turn. It's what to do when some road condition or obstacle comes up while you're turning that I'm wondering about. Is it good practice to only brake in straight lines (including engine braking)?

I have a feeling I'll understand all this much better once I get a track day.
>>

Your tires have a limited amount of traction, so if you are braking it means you can't be turning as hard, which is the main reason why you shouldn't be cornering at your limit.

If you just think you're going too fast while cornering, it's probably best just to ride it out. However if there's something blocking your path like a mail truck stopped in the road, you obviously don't want to run into it. Just ease on the brakes and don't go off the road. Your bike will straighten out as you slow down.

You sound like you need to watch twist of the wrist and some other stuff, a lot of the physics of it will be explained in that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0YC_mnh8hM

Some of this stuff is contended by higher level track guys but it's got the advice you need.

The truth is you can brake while leaned over but it really isn't ideal, will often stand the bike up if you START while leaned over, and trailbraking (keeping the brakes on as you turn in and slowly letting them out as you approach the apex) way increases the work the front tyre has to do and is completely unnecessary on the road.

As a beginner don't brake while leaned over is great advice, if you're overcooked and want to slow down my advice is to stand the bike up a bit, brake then lean back in.

ie this webm, increasing radius corner that suddenly tightens at the end, I stand up and push the line out toward the centre to brake while mostly upright then flick it back in instead.

>If you're ever in an emergency braking situation while leaning and can't straighen out, go light on the rear brake, use it to tighten your line a tiny bit on a swerve, then straighten and brake.
Ok, that's useful. So braking will tighten the radius of your turn and slow you down a little simultaneously. You use that to maneuver as you can, and then straighten and brake.

>If you really want to git gud run some low-speed corners and try to take them fast. It's a lot more fun than trying to get a knee down going triple digits on the street, especially if you have something like a heavy literbike.
Lol, I'm this guy. My bike weighs 350 pounds. I can do the route I posted at about 45 mph. I think one of the main advantages of starting on a smaller bike is that they're just so fucking light. The thing pulls pretty nice even in like 3rd gear. Never honestly felt like I was lacking power, but then again I've only broken 60 like twice.

I'm very new at this. Your guidance is appreciated greatly.

modern tyres are amazing, good tarmac in good conditions even sport touring tyres that'll last 15,000 kms have fantastic grip, I've never once had a slip or a moment on tarmac on my angel GTs from lean angle or whatever, on my old S20 EVO front I've done a stoppie on a rainy day etc.

You can feel when you're not hooking up so much on a given surface at a given time so you don't push it etc though.

If you have modern sport tyres like the S21, super corsas, Q3 etc you can basically forget about experiencing traction loss on a good bit of road unless you're REALLY fucking hektik.

Keep in mind that's zoomed out to encompass a 70 mile long circuit. It's a lot of really tight corners and then a straight to the next section. Best you can get in the midwest.

>So braking will tighten the radius of your turn and slow you down a little simultaneously. You use that to maneuver as you can, and then straighten and brake.
Yes. If you're really new though I wouldn't rely on it too much. You're likely to lock up a wheel. Too much brake just makes you fall. The rear brake does keep the bike a bit more stable however. I usually use it coming to a full stop so I can avoid putting my feet down entirely. It's also insanely useful for u-turns, as it's vital for shit like this

>that turning is insane.
That turning is what you get when you learn how to use your clutch and rear brake while turning. Here's basically what he's doing
>Clutch in, lean in, rear brake hard
>Let off brake as he comes down, let the front rotate while the bike somewhat falls over
>Clutch out and accelerate to straighten up once pointing in the correct direction
As long as you're rotating fast enough, the bike won't fall over, but you'll be going too slow to stand it back up just by using the bars. Once you get on the throttle the stabilizing force kicks in again and you can stand it up normally just like any corner.
>>
>>14871847
Sounds like I've got some serious practicing to do then, fuck.

It's not as imperative on your small bike, but on a topheavy 420lb bike like mine with a high seat you really end up using the clutch to keep it upright at low speeds. The first time I tried to leave my driveway on it I almost stacked it because I didn't use the clutch right.

Also remember, the clutch is an extension of your throttle. You'll never be completely smooth on the throttle if you don't learn to use your clutch

If you want to have your mind blown, look into motogymkhana, you'll see a lot of bikes doing stuff they're not "meant" to.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90BxTrAADi4

And obviously this stuff must be pretty useful or 2015 motoGP world champ Jorge lorenzo wouldn't do it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOvYPPiU0eE

I'm only just getting started with this stuff but I really want to get some proper crash bars for the SV or something and go harder at it, it's cool stuff and SCARY, VERY SCARY.

I ended out with blisters on both hands after the first session I did with my brother on an actual motogymkhana course, you don't slip the clutch when you do it so it requires very precise and scary throttle control.

once you learn how to do it right on any bike it goes to the next bike, I could turn a cbr1000rr on the lock with proper clutch and rear brake control within about 2 minutes of getting on one because I'd taught myself correctly on the SV.

It all comes down to retraining your brain's survival instincts (this is part of why I think low speed informs high speed, it's all about retraining your brain in both).

What do you naturally want to do when you feel like you're about to drop a u-turn? you want to let go of the throttle, pull the clutch in and put your feet down, it's like the opposite of helpful but our dumb arse brains want us to do it anyway.

The way I retrained my brain was to go to car parks, put the bike ON LOCK so you can't turn them in any further, pretend your feet are glued to the pegs and can't move and do donuts slipping the clutch and the rear brake.

With the bars on the lock the only way to control your lean angle is with the throttle, clutch (cont)

Sometimes you just have to go all-in. That's how I got my CBR 600 for only $1800 CAD (like $1300 US at the time).

I had to travel an hour out of town to get it, so I got a one-way ride from a buddy. I had $1800 cash, and $500 room on my credit card, and a dollar more and I was broke. Got to the place, the bike was working, but not insured.

So we scrambled over to the insurance dealer, and changed the title over to me, and got insurance with the last $500 I had on my credit card.

As this was happening, night fell, and a massive fucking storm rolled in. On the Sea-to-Sky highway, one of the twistiest mother fucking highways around. And I hadn't ridden in 2 months.

If I had crashed, or the bike broke down, or anything went wrong, I would have been totally fucked in my entire life. I was pretty much all-in on this crazy idea somehow all working out.

So in the pouring rain and dark of night, at a cautious but exhilarating 75kmph pace, I slogged my way across the highway. With such a shitty headlight, I could barely see, but finally I made my way home. And everything has worked out in my life amazingly ever since.

Part of me still sometimes thinks I died on the highway, and that this is some afterlife where everything has been going my way ever since.

is with the throttle, clutch and rear brake control.

So when you feel the bike dropping? don't turn the bars and don't put a foot down, let out some clutch, (you should have a consistent fast idle on the throttle) to spoon some more torque to the rear wheel and the bike will pick itself up.

Do this over and over and eventually your first instinct when you feel the bike dropping in low speed stuff will NO LONGER be to stick a foot out, it'll be to use the bikes natural controls and physics to pick the bike up and continue your maneuver un-fluffed.

Need to pick up a new jacket. What can /dbt/ recommend for a spring/summer/fall jacket in the ~$300 range for a skelly. I want something really plain and casual looking, not some loud, brightly colored sport bike jacket covered in logos. There aren't really any motorcycle shops in my area who sell that kind of stuff, so I'll probably have to order online.
>>
>>14872010
Okay, I am fucking impressed. I guess I can expect to drop my bike a shit ton while practicing this stuff?
>>14872036
That's good to know. Moving from a CBR300 to a ZX-11 I was worried the weight difference would mean I'd have to learn it all over again. Might give me something to practice tonight instead of sitting at the desk all night.

Craiglist is alright if you've got the money on hand, and find one that's not shit.
Dealership is good if you're poor and need to finance, or want a brand new bike.
/dbt/ hates dealerships for the most part though.
>>
>>14869673
Nice
>>
Dealership will give you a guaranteed to be working bike at a reasonable if slightly inflated price. It's safe.

Craigslist has much wider extremes of outcome. You can get a phenomenal deal that you brag about for years to come, or you could get totally fucked, scammed, hosed, or just let down massively.

Best part about Hawaii is volcanoes national park. I guess you can't walk to the lava flow anymore though.

I'd rather southeast asia than Japan unless I was just rolling in money

I would rather do a 1000 mile ride north to south in vietnam on a 300$ 100cc motorcycle with a total budget of like 2.5k. that would be the adventure to have and shitbiking at its finest.

>Japan tour plans
my nigero. Just started riding with the intention of doing a couple bike tours through Japan, since my garage over there isn't really big enough for a car.

Also can confirm that NZ is worth a tour.

As for the get-rich-quick scheme, in japan at least, it might be a better idea to buy a bike. Renting for a couple weeks costs about the same as buying a used sport.
