They're unreliable pieces of shit, and every single one I've driven is stuck at an awkward place between being too soft for performance, but not soft enough for comfort. Not to mention the rear seats are a joke for trying to get a full sized adult back there so there goes that point.

People buy them for the brand name and the brand name alone.

If you like a smooth I6 that's bulletproof the N52 328i are fantastic cars.

Then of course we can go back further and they have great options in the E30, E36, and E46 chassis.

Are you high? The steering in my E90 is tight and ridiculously heavy. The gearbox is 8/10, I'd take an S2K over it but it's not pudding by any stretch.

Old mercs are just as accessible and cheap as BMWs in Europe.
And BMWs are relatively cheap - that's the point - they are not as expensive or exclusive as Porsches and they perform very well so they make some of the best track trashing cars that can be easily daily drivable.
