Despite being pictured in the sticky, I don't feel that this car is discussed a lot, around here or in general. The first executive compact from BMW was popular in Europe due to a range of engine options and a general affinity for fastbacks, but North America only received the 1.8L M42 (a great engine but less appealing than the stronger M50 series to American buyers).

There are very few articles online concerning this black sheep of the E36 generation. It has its quirks, but today it is an attainable RWD hatchback with elegant lines. What do you think of this car, /o/?

Friends little brother owns one. 180xxx miles. Shit falls off of it every day it seems. Constantly breaking. The hatchback of it is notoriously hated, I understand you like it, but that's subjective. Good fuel economy, terrible reliability, poor construction.

I readily admit that I am probably in a minority in liking this car. My love of BMW is almost completely limited to the E30 (rectangles with circles on them), but this weirdo always catches my eye.

I'll also grant that these could be as costly to upkeep as any other E36. But is there any evidence that it is worse than the sedans and coupes?

One more photo. I'd love to hear of any other experiences people have had with this car.
>>
>>14844053
Evidence? None personally. I've seen it break more than any other e36 (M3 included) that I've ever known. It's not my car. I'm sure you can look up reliability ratings or repair rates or some such. I don't have any evidence. Just personal experience with a few cars.
>>
>>14844053
>Trailing arms vs multilink
It is basically e36 at the front and e30 at the back.
>>
>>14844015
I thought I was the only one OP. These are the best looking BMWs, aside from maybe an e30 M3. Wherever I see these petite little bimmers I secretly pop a boner
>>
I have a 316i compact and the only issue I had over the past is that the 225/50/16 scratch wheel arches on the left rear in curves if I load up more than zero people in the back. I'm not a skilled mechanic and neither am I rich to fix it, so I use it as an excuse to claim it's a 2 seater when freeloaders want a ride.

I really like the styling and love that it has a cool long hood while still being about as long as a Pollo, making things much easier when parking. I wish fastback would make a return on sporty cars
>>
>>14844275
Ah yes, this was a major difference in the car. Possibly chosen to allow more room for the trunk.

>>14844302
There are dozens of us to be sure. I have always seen the E36 as being an ugly car but somehow the compact always challenges that notion in me.

>>14844326
Thanks for chiming in! Speaking of the backseat, is it remotely comfortable for adults? Would sit back there for a couple of hours?
>>
>>14844388
>couple of hours
Depends, I'm 185cm and I have to partially tilt my head if I want to sit straight. But it's surprisingly big in other directions, especially in term of legroom for such a small car. But then again, I'm east european, the comfiest backseats I've ever driven were in a 86 Sierra
>>
In slavlands and balt lands they call it the rat. Bottom of the barrel shitboxes in these parts, dudebro boyracer choises of first cars, insane amount of crashes and malfunctions. It has become a real meme car and a real life joke and rightfully so.
>>
I like it. Its pretty much a 89-91 318is without a LSD and the nice boxy looks of the E30. Otherwise pretty damn similar underneath (suspension, drivetrain, and dimensions/weight)

318tis as a whole seem like a good budget alternative to a E30, and I know in the rare chance I wreck my E36 M3 if I can't find a cheap not-rusty E30 I'd probably get a 318ti instead.
>>
>>14844015
I want one but while looking through classifieds can't seem to find one in Canada. Looks like importing is the only choice to get one here.
>>
>>14844633
Look in the USA, I found them easier to find than clean manual E30s.
>>
>>14844015
Dont buy a BMW. shitboxes. I had an E46 wich a recently sold. Plastics and rubber compounds starts to fail. The suspension is a weakpoint. If you are lucky enough to find one in good condition go ahead. But Its just a stupid old car.
>>
>>14844493
Actually in Balt lands we call any E36's "rats", not just compacts
>>
>>14844801
>don't buy a BMW. shitboxes.
what this should say is
>don't buy a BMW shitbox
Their top trim models are best in class for basically every year up until about 2006-2007 and then the rest of the industry started to catch up while BMW started to lose its soul.
>>
>>14845048
Yeah? Well, my bad. Thanks for the info, though.

It's like you hate fun, dědku.

I've had a 98 328i for 8 months now, bought it at 114,890 and haven't had many problems except

>motor in driver seat won't allow me to tilt up
>computer saying check brake light circuit, but lights still work
>replaced timing belt

Only like 3 threads a day.
Fuck off and die BMW faggots. These cars are shit.
>>
>>14845470
The later E36 318ti's are 1.9L. ;^)
>>
it would be way better if it came as a 323,325, or 328 in the states. that little 4banger is really gutless AND unreliable
>>
>>14845712
316i is gutless. I wouldn't say the same about 318is/318ti (same engine). After all, it's got 140hp. Only missing that low-end torque but it is still fun to drive because it's so rev-happy.
>>
>>14845499
the diesels were 1.7 though
Fuck BMW's numbering
>>
>>14845712
Weird, I have been under the impression that the M42 is a fairly reliable engine with its timing chain, automatically adjusting tensioner, and hydraulic lifters. It would certainly be fun to have the car with an M50, though- provided it does not throw off the balance.

>>14845479
This thread is about the compact specifically.
>>
>>14847615
The M42 was belt driven, the M43 had a chain. And yeah M43's are very reliable
>>
>>14847624
nope

>The M42 is the last chain-driven engine fitted to the E30, and the first 16-valve unit.

My bad I mixed it up with the M40.

Oh look who's back.

I guess from no on we will have weekly "why does no one talk about the compact?? I guess I'm the only one who likes them" threads again.
>>
>>14848102
Well, I haven't been on /o/ in a few months and I couldn't remember seeing threads about this car in the past, but maybe I just wasn't paying attention. I've never made this thread before. I do apologize for striking a nerve, though.
