Help me /o/
Teach me /o/

So yesterday I bought a 2016 Honda Civic (the one with the turbo) and my friend kept telli me I should 'chip' it or something to make it faster or something.

What does this chip mean ? And what are some other ways to make it faster, I know be little about cars besides how to drive them
>>
Your friends a retard
Smack him in the forehead the next time you see him
>>
>>14832417
To chip it would be to swap the engine with a rotary, also know as a 'dorito'

but beware, your rotary will require a SPECIFIED type of doritos as fuel. Mine requires the guacamole flavor, which are very hard to find in my area, so my project remains unmoveable

Kill yourself. Honda is shit these days.

That new turbo motor with the CVT is not that bad. Would kick ass with a manual.

your friend is a fag and you think you bought a cooler car than you did

if you "chip" it you will just blow up the cvt transmission

And this years civic has got more praise that the last 10 years of civics
>>

I think he's talking about Hondata or a product similar to that. It may cause you some issues getting warranty work done in the future, if that's a concern to you.
>>
>>14832417

See if you can return the car still. You made a bad choice.
>>
Make your turbo go for more turbo
More power, sometimes als better fuel economy

I think you will void your warranty though. And you should never change something on a new car.
>>
>>14832428

cringy attempt to be funny.
>>
>>14832417
Fucking knew this was going to happen with new Honda's. Can't wait to see dumbass kids blowing up their engine because "nah bro you just chip and put a cold air exhaust filter, and you'll be like making 300whp. I read about it on a forum"

In laymans terms hes saying to re-tune the computer to make more power/be more aggresive.

Most any car with OBD-II can be "tuned" but turbo cars benefit the most because you can raise boost level a few PSI more and make another 30-100 HP depending on the car, turbo and how its setup.

This can void warranty but can also give you a lot of extra power for a relatively small amount of money.

Ask pretty much any one the best performance mod for a stock turbo car and they will say tune.
>>
$300 tunes for turbo cars are THE best price to performance ratio mod one can buy.

An econobox like a 1.8T Jetta can be tuned from 170 HP/ 184 TQ to 242 HP/293 TQ.

That kind of power would give a WRX a run for its money.

You can see how a tune is pretty much the best thing you can do to a turbo car.
>>
>>14832417
A chip is something you buy off eBay and put in your cars computer. They do nothing.
See MCM
>>
>>14832859
He probably meant tuned.

it seems "chipped" and "tuned" mean pretty much the same thing now.

Those "chips" on eBay are garbage if thats what you're referring to.
>>
>>14832417

Not sure how far you could push that little 1.5 liter. Its already at 16.5 lbs of boost stock which is probably pretty near the limit without being too much. you could probably get 200 HP/190 Tq out of that engine though.

The Jetta 1.8t runs like 9-10 lbs boost so it can be cranked way up for mad gains.
>>
Wait does no one call them a ECU Remap?

Modern ECUs adapt to the conditions they are used in and detect how the driver wants to use the engine - for example it will detect when you're on a long trip, trying to save petrol and it will also detect when you're doing hektik skids and want the maximum power out of it.
Not only will you be ruining the warranty, there's a good chance you're choking engine performance over-all. Unless you do heavy modifications to the engine, "chipping" it is to be quite honest a terrible idea familia and also a waste of time.

Come back if you turbo it. Congrats on buying a decent car.
>>
>>14832894
That's similar. Tune is generally the word I've come across however, with aftermarket part supplies giving you 'staged' off the shelf tunes to account for your aftermarket bolt ons.

These can be kinda junky and often worse (for your engine) than the stock tune. Although, in Subaru's case everything I've read says the stock tune is junk.

You can also get a costume tune for your car by a professional and this is the best option for tuning a vehicle and involves lots of revisions and data logging.
>>
>>14832906
correction
>Come back if you turbo it

I mean come back if you put a bigger turbo in it. I honestly wouldn't bother. Modern cars are expensive as hell to customize and since everything is tied to the ECU nowadays, also time consuming.
Buy a 200 shitbox civic from the early 90s, fuck around with it, learn to do rally and learn to fix it.
>>
>>14832906
>Come back if you turbo it

What? the Civic 1.5 is turbo and would greatly benefit from a professional tune. But I found no companies offering. And then theres the matter of the CVT so im not sure what will happen.

They say its the same CVT from the 189 HP Accord so maybe it will handle a slight bump in power.

"chipping" is some archaic BS from pre OBD-II days. Stop saying that. its now all tuned via OBD-II
>>
>>14832923
>>14832920
>>
>>14832944
Yeah I know I was typing my response as you were typing your second.
>>
>>14832417
He means an ECU flash that'll make more power, but you'll void the warranty in the process

It's a pointless waste of money for an economy car with a CVT owned by someone who doesn't know much about cars
>>
>>14832417
At this point the car is probably faster than you can handle. Learn it. Master it. Do some autocross sessions once you've broken it in.

For handling, the first thing is to get stickier tires. They won't last as long. "Chipping" the engine for more power will also cause it to not last as long. Worth it, for some people.
>>
How is that 1.5LT from Honda anyways? Is this Hondas first time in factory turbos?
>>
>>14833020
No, they have done factory turbos on kei cars like the City since the 80s, shit the RDX when first launched was turbo, and I've heard good things about the new turbo 1.5
>>
Why is the manual only available on the absolute base model? I hate it when manufacturers do that.
>>
>>14832417
I have euro civic 8th gen diesel tuned and I highly recommend it, always with caution and informing yourself before doing it.

With some non aggresive/expensive tweaks you can get a great car our of an average one.
>>
>>14833197
Honda said they're going to be expanding their options of manuals.

OP here and yeah I wish it came manual but w/e. And alright thanks guys. So what I'm mainly hearing is just leave it as is as to not void the warranty.

And I went from a 2010 Accord (4 Cylinder) to this and I'm greatly impressed. Much quicker pick up and much nicer handling.
>>
>>14832776
It's a massive improvement over the CVTs in my mom's old civic hybrid and my sisters impreza. My only complaint is that the new civic is a very large car
>>
>>14832417
I'm sure Hondata will come out with something. Although, it'll probably void your warranty if you upload a new calibration. I'm eager to see how much potential these engines have.
>>
Just install an aquarium valve on the wastegate. Close it up and badabing! Instant POWAH!
>>
>>14832417
ECU re-tune or a plug and play.
Nothing that you need unless you're dying to go faster or are already planning on sick performance mawds.
The most you could get out of an ECU tune desu is a bit more PSI which could fuck your engine. I'd keep it stock and focus on easy jobs til you have a bit of experience.

ECU = The computer that controls your car's functions.
Plug-And-Play = Specific kind of ECU (which are generally re-tuned or re-programmed) that's been pre-programmed with "better" than stock parameters.
Tune = The act of reprogramming ECUs.
PSI = How much boost (your turbo adds power by adding "boost", PSI is the measurement of that)

Easier jobs - Headers, basic rice, cold air intake, Intercooler.

cheers mate.
>>
Shoulda get a toyota corolla xrs. The most powerful corolla ever build.

354HP stock, 765HP when turbo.
AWD.
0-60 in under 3.5 sec.

where are you getting those numbers?
>>
>>14833710

Ricer math. Everyone knows a new anodized blue blowoff valve adds 50hp. And a K&N cold air intake adds at least another 25hp. Throw on a grapefruit shooter muffler and now you're in the big leagues !

bwwwwoooooooaaarrrrrrgh!
>>
>>14833719
why did you do that to me anon?
>tfw been looking at XRS corollas for a while because sleeper + cheapest turbo kits out there (1.5k for a full kit)

>>14833651
CVTs are shit. No. Matter. What. They kill any fun the car might've been.
>>
>>14834126
that's why I said "not that bad" as well as "would prefer a manual." CVT is not the devil. they're shitty, but not the devil.
