not sure why people put all-seasons on a miats, you really should get dedicated summer and winter sets.

also if you have height-adjustable coilovers you can combine steel wheels +blizzaks or nokians + max ride height to make a proper winter battle miats

what are some good dedicated summer tires in 195 50 15 or 205 45 15?

I do have a set of blizzaks so it would make sense to get summer tires, but the problem is that it rains a lot year round where I'm at. our summers are only a couple of months long. I really don't want to hit a puddle on the freeway or something and wreck my car.

and I also don't want to run my blizzaks for 9 months a year. they aren't very good in the rain anyway.

it all depends on offset and tire width. ride height too. I recommend looking at the fitment thread on clubroadster.net to get an idea.

but generally 15x9 will definitely need fender rolling. 15x8 it depends. 15x7 you're almost always ok unless you have a pretty low offset wheel.

>I've been so tempted to pick up a cheap NC and BBR tune it desu.
that's pretty much what I did, mine was relatively cheap for an NC because of its mileage (~110k mi) but it had the spec I was after. I had the BBR super 200 conversion done so 40-ish extra bhp. It's noticeably more torquey, pulls nicely through the midrange but not rocketship fast. Sounds nice and burbly at idle and a bit raspy at higher rpms.

BBR do a super 225 package which seems about the limit of n/a tuning but diminishing returns really kick in. There are some 300+bhp BBR cars around, all FI obviously.

I had these on my Swift Sport, they were good but I went back to the Falken ZE914. The Yokohamas were more comfortable due to the softer sidewall but liked to squirm about a lot more, especially on patchy roads.

idk but i'm glad I grabbed one with great paint when I was looking for a Miata. The color is so captivating that I want to paint my future ND the same color.
>>
So my 1996 Miata has 89K miles and generally is in really nice shape. I'm probably going to sell it and downgrade to something bigger and more powerful.

But it needs:

-Major rust repair in the rockers
-Minor rust repair in the front fenders
-Timing belt and all major engine services
-Transmission synchros are going
-Will need a new top soon
-Airbag module is dead and is a brutally expensive and difficult repair

Assuming I farm out the body work and do everything else myself all of that would probably still cost me at least $1500 in all. So do I sell it for $1500-2000 as-is or repair it and sell it for $3500-4000?

i'm p mad they never sold it with the tan leather interior. i'm gonna have to buy a mariner blue and post-fit it.

anyone got the pic of the mariner blue NA with a hardtop and a business man driving through city traffic? that's what sold me on the colour.
>>
>>14836567

If it makes you feel better, I'm replacing my SNC with a big nose crank and it'll be about 2000 total. And that includes shop lift, engine stand, timing belt, water pump, and all new seals all around. Not bad for getting a fresh low mileage engine and tranny.
>>
>>14836176
On a BP based build?

That's what I was talking about when I drew that.
>>
So I have a 97 with 190k on it. It burns 1 quart of oil every 150 miles. I see it come out of the exhaust behind me when I get on the gas. It still has great even compression. I'm guessing my oil rings are shot.

How hard is it to rebuild a BP6D? I have a friend with a space and the equipment to remove the engine and work on it. I've never rebuilt an engine before. I've watched lots of videos but that only goes so far.

I want to add a turbo later on down the road, so I'm guessing I should go ahead and put forged rods and pistons in. What's the best bang for your buck pistons and rods for a 250HP BP build? Do pistons come with rings? What bearings should I use? What's the procedure for prepping the block once it is dissassembled? Can I hone the cylinders with a drill hone or should I take it to a machine shop? Is headwork necessary other than lapping the valves? What should the compression ratio for the pistons be if I'm running a GT250R turbo up to 250HP?

I already have a MegaSquirt 3 DIY assembled and almost ready to have the harness made.

Does anybody here have a boosted miata? Tell me your story.

The color is listed as "Blazing Yellow." I looked up the VIN and it is in fact one of only 1000 made in that color and configuration.

The weird thing is that two of the body panels and the top of the trunk (only the top) is a slightly brighter shade. Maybe that was the side that faced the sun most often when the previous owner parked it, IDK, but it's really weird and makes me wonder what she's been through.

And it's only the top of the trunk lid. Beneath the spoiler it's the same shade as the rest.
>>
>>14840450
Correction: the left rear quarter panel, driver door, and the top of the trunk lid are the brighter shade.

The rain cleared up for once here in Scotland last weekend, so I took my new '93 S-Special on its first proper drive for fun since I got it last month and had an absolute blast.

Are there any decent rain tyres that fit the stock wheels? I'm either doing a shit job of looking or there isn't much in the right size.

i've tried asking this a few times but never got an answer;

when doing a turbo on an NB, or an NA with obd2, do you have to totally remove all the turbo equipment and reinstall the stock ECU whenever you take the car in for inspection?
>>
>>14840463
keep in mind you can have slightly wider or thinner tires than the OEM size without much trouble, its why almost all honda fit owners switch from that weird 185/55/16 bullshit, to the much more common 205/50 for way better selection

also, there's no such thing as a rain tire, what you want is a" high performance summer" tire, which will do really well in both dry and wet.
all-seasons sacrifice a bit of that for some slight performance on snow and ice

>>
>>14840507
Cool, thanks for the info. The ones I was looking at were those Uniroyal Rainsports that are praised on various forums, but they only seem to be made in 185/55 for 14" (compared to the OEM 185/60 size). Would that have any major problems outside of making the speedo read even higher and breaking my back a bit more on shitty Scottish roads or should I just look elsewhere?
>>
>>14840463

Jealous of them legit country roads for your roadster to enjoy.

Nice Eunos nose badge and daisys are still rocking. Any other mods?
>>
>>14840532
Nothing else yet, there's a little maintenance work I want to do first, typical stuff like a minor little rust patch on one of the arches and the CAS O-ring. After that though I was thinking about advancing the ignition timing and changing the intake for a sweeter induction note. This is the first car I've had a chance to properly work on so I'm still deciding what I want to do with it.

Good stuff, maintenance first. I'm learning on my miata too, first real car I can work on, and it's great. Good first cars to work on.

Nice to see an owner taking care of it vs immediately raping it into a meme mobile where the first mods are stance, stickers, and crystal shifter knob. I mean sure, you can do what you want, but balance that out with taking care of the body/chassis and fluids.

I'd look into upgrading the suspension, but since it's an S-Special it's already got the uprated and slightly lower Bilsteins which I'm pretty happy with and I think coilovers would be overkill since I don't plan on tracking it much (at least for now). I think getting the old shocks refurbished if it's possible would work just fine for me.

As much as I love the daisy wheels I'm swithering on bumping them up to 15" for the supposedly better handling and tyre selection, but I don't want to go and fit heavier wheels if I can avoid it. The Enkeis in >>14840111 look like a really good option even if they're a tad pricey.

Partially stripped interiors like that are gorgeous to me.

I love the look of chassis metal way more than carpet, and the body color paint looks amazing against a black dash.

Part of why I love the ND interior so much, is that it has some of the exposed chassis painted showing. Just on the door, but whatever. Will be better with the carpet torn out to show the body on the floor as well.

Anyone put insulation from firewall to rear shelf?
It just gets so fucking hot in this NA during summer, sitting in slow traffic is a serious killer.

This is information is on the engines of the NA miata only. I'm not counting the BP4W in the NB.

Aside from the obvious lack in displacement, the 1.6 liter B6ZE is an undersquare design. The stroke is bigger than the pistons by 5.6mm. The 1.8 BP in the 94 - 97 miata still had an undersquare design, but only by 2mm.

The B6 is a good motor, as it's lighter and because the distance between the pistons is shorter the crank isn't as heavy, therefore making it rev faster. However it lacks a few things the BP has that offer significant improvements such as oil squirter jets for the pistons. They spray oil onto the back of the piston from below and help cool and lubricate the cylinders and piston. This is great for a turbo motor. The BP also has a support plate for the crank, kind of. It is a stamped piece of sheet steel that fits between the crank and the oil pickup. It helps catch oil from the rotating assembly and direct it to the pickup faster, as well as giving some more strength to the bottom end to support the crank under load. The BP also features a thick aluminum oil pan that also gives alot of rigidity to the bottom end, as well as improving cooling of the oil by way of airflow under the car.

All BP engines have a forged crankshaft from factory.

So I went to RSpeed today to hear what they said about my oil consumption problem. They said valve stem seals are usually only to blame when the oil smoke comes out on first startup. Mine doesn't do it at all on first startup. I burn a bunch once it's up to operating temp and I get on the gas. Because of that they said it was the oil rings like I thought initially.

I'm in college right now so both time and money are hard to find. What are my options? I live in Georgia.

Hi guys. English is not my native language so I'm sorry for any typos, I'm from Poland. And I've been thinking about getting Miata as my first car. What is scaring me is small trunk (where do I put subwoofer in :o) what if I want to move something bigger with it like my vintage audio eq... But still I am drawn to it. NA with low profile headlighs or NB both a little lowered but not too much and some cool wheels + both of them with hardtops... And honestly they both sound amazing with ITBs. On some vids actually I though that that guy had swapped 20v blacktop in... Because it sure sounded like it, must have been AE101/111 ITBs. I'm stil kinda torn with something bigger but fwd or Miata... Dunno what to do. Is it really THAT small?
>>
>>14855528
First off, your English is great compared to most native speakers. +1 internet for you.

Second, the Miata isn't that small. I am 6'2" and fit comfortably with enough leg and arm room. I can fit a weeks groceries in the trunk and even more in the passenger footwell. Even more, I have seen people get creative with their audio setups by making use of the parcel shelf. Might be best for you to sit in one and see how you like it. Best of luck my friend!
>>
>>14855528
I could stuff the body of a short man in the trunk of mine if I really tried.

There is PLENTY of room for a subwoofer.
>>
>>14855528

ITBs do sound great but don't get ITBs. ITB's themselves are cheap but you have to get alot more stuff for eveything to run well. And then you can only make 180+hp tops. Cost? 6-8k for the total setup. Spend 3k for a full, reliable turbo set up and make the same 180 easy. 210, 225 is also very easy and reliable to get if you buy a few more bits.

You seem like a guy who needs to have his ride sound a certain way. Turbo's can sound great, superchargers can sound good, and even non-aspirated engines can sound great with 1-1.5k us monies in intake and exhaust.

The trunk is small for most people. What "vintage audio equipment would you haul around? Give us dimensions.

Plenty of space to put subs in with the rear parcel shelf, as said by >>14855658
>>
>>14850769
Im the guy who you suggested to replace the bumper. I ended up fixing it using a heat gun and mallet. it was dented in from a hit
>>
>>14855020
Rent a engine lift and rebuild yourself I guess. Replace all the piston rings and send the head to a machine shop to check tolerances. All in all, if you replace the water pump and timing stuff you should be about $1000 down, although that's on the upper end. I guess you could save cash by not replacing the water pump or timing but might as well. I'm not certain on machine shop costs, but if all is well and the head doesn't need to be resurfaced it should be cheapish.

Nothing there is cosmetic.

I can't find anywhere if the OEM head studs are Torque-to-Yield or reusable. Since I don't know I will go ahead and get ARP since I know those will last forever. The oil pump is about 80 bucks more than a normal one. And the head gasket is about 30 bucks more than a regular one. I would save maybe $200 if I just did the stuff I need, but I were already talking at least $1500 still.

Thanks, man!

I'm around 5'10" if I converted it right (176-178cm). So no subwoofers but good full-range speakers on the back shelf? Sounds good to me. It not a big car so there could be plenty of bass with this kind of setups.
>>14855664
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7a4aM4YJE0 something like that would fit right in? I think it's made to not take that much of space in small trunks.
>>14855709
Well for starters if I ever got NA or NB I would some buy good wheels and lower it a bit and also I would buy a good muffler, straight through or something. I like NA but only with low profile headlights, they make it appear more like AE86 or MR2 and not that feminine + I bet people would refrain from saying stuff like "hey look it's that Miata fag".

As for ITBs here's the tricky part as far as I know only ONE or a few shops that do this in Poland and they are mostly located in Warsaw, capital of Poland. I live closer to Poznań... So yeah there's that.

Yeah, yeah I love when car sounds great. As many 4chan users I watched Initial D and was just enchanted and immersed by real life sounds. Would love to get AE86 Trueno+blacktop+ITBs but here in Poland you can only buy them from abroad and fetch them to Poland and all that for a price where you could buy Subaru Impreza WRX or even used GT86 if you're lucky. Although there was only ONE guy who found a legit Levin hatch on some parking here in Poland and it was in bad shape with rust and shit and the owner was some grampa and that guy made it into mint condition with panda like color for a price of Miata NA or NB.

I think the closest thing and most similar looking and sounding car to AE86 Tureno is NA with low profile headlights and ITBs. So I'm reaally drawn to that option. Heart says "buy NA and modify it" mind says "buy NB, you won't have to modify the shit out of it and even if some jackass will total your car you will buy another, swap what's left from old one to new on and lower it and you're good to go".
>>
>>14855709
Sry, I've hit the characters limit. Hmm there are two 580×330×230 mm/58x33x23cm (height/width/length) vintage loudspeakers, I want to buy in the future to use in my home stereo. So yeah if I buy them and they will be close to where I live it would be natural that I would want to use my car to get them :D.

So there's place for the sub then? Not only full-range speakers? :o
>>
>>14857726
>for a price of Miata NA or NB.
Also I want to add that here in Poland SW20 are more expensive than NA and NBs. Also AW11 is significantly more rare and expensive than SW20.
>>
>>14856278

FM is expensive. Save some bucks by buying from Rosenthal for OEM, rock auto for gaskets, and Amazon for the timing belt kit. If you're concerned about money then only buy the base parts and not the "race" upgrade versions.
>>
>>14857767
>58x33x23cm

They will fit no problem. If you buy 2 you can put one in the trunk and one in the passenger seat. The miata trunk (at least the NB) can fit a 2 golf bags (barely): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbYpYPJsk1E

And again, you do have space in the rear parcel shelf (shelf behind seats) and the passenger seat itself.

Hey if you want ITBs then go for it. Just know that it won't simply cost 2k usd, you'll probably be spending at least 3-4k for other components (fuel injectors, megasquirt, etc) probably more if you want to A: Do it right B: Do it reliably and C: Make any sort of power.

Here in the United States of Burger, ITBs are illegal because we have nazi emissions tests. Well at least some of the states do I think. But in Poland you can into ITBs easier I think, though probably not cheaper.
>>
>>14857767

http://www.carbonmiata.com/shop/mazda-mx-5/rear-subwoofer-panel-2/

That's what I would do. The best thing is it doesn't take any room away from the trunk. You're not losing any cargo space, and the rear shelf space is still pretty much intact.
>>
>>14858352

You probably won't be able to put the biggest speakers you want, but those are way too ricey and overkill for the small 2 seater anyway.

Can I get any recommendations towards doing repairs for rusty miatas? Every single fucking project that I have to do to fix my miata ends up being extremely over complicated due to rust. I tried replacing my front and rear brakes and rotors today and while I successfully replaced everything on the front, the rear was just a complete nightmare. brake pads were melted and rusted onto the calipers and rotors while the bolts were so rusty on everything That I had to resort to using hammers on every bolt with my ratchet.

does someone with zero muscle and basic rust perpetrator have to resort into power tools and kroil for everything or am I suppose to be doing these repairs with other people and not by myself?

Pic related,my front brakes which were supposedly replaced when I bought the car a year ago. amazed that I haven't died at all driving this NA
>>

The previous owner only drove it on the summer and never did much maintenance, so I have a feeling the brakes haven't been changed in about a decade. I'm actually contemplated on rather just to find some miata friends or take the car to a shop for the timing belt/waterpump

Instead of just figuring out what the hell is wrong your listening to what the computer says. I had my 97 throw a code the other day and all it said was "4 cylinder misfire" meaning that at one point or another all 4 cylinders had misfired. What the hell am I supposed to do with that? I ended figuring out that my upstream 02 sensor was bad and that I had ruined my catalytic converter.

Trust me you will regret buying an OBDII miata if you ever plan to do any real mods to the engine.

I just got Direzza DZ 102's 3 days ago and they're super super decent for the money. On smooth surfaces the lost traction upwards of 5-6k RPM on a turn and in rain they are very good so far.

They take bumps very well, have nice grip for highly spirited drives, and they're damn cheap.

The paint on my NA needs a lot of work(tons of oxidation, swirls, scratches, orange peel, etc), so I was thinking about just having it vinyl wrapped it since the cost would be pretty similar. What color should I go with? I was thinking purple like pic related, but I'm not sure how I'd like it. Maybe a really dark purple or even black.
>>
>>14871587
in general if it has the power folding mirrors it _probably_ has the LSD, i don't think it was a stand alone option, but in a package with the mirrors.

the manual mirrors have a really flimsy-looking base but the power folding mirrors have a more flowing attachment to the door
>>
>>14871965
do an autoflex wrap instead, it's like $1400 and indistinguishable from regular car paint, i believe it lasts 4 years, and is removable when you go to sell the car
>>
>>14871978
Really don't want to dip it. I want the jambs done, which will be done with vinyl, and if I ever need parts redone in the future, the vinyl would be a perfect match instead of needing to mix up some coating.

Local shop up near the Boston area does a really good job wrapping. It's a bit pricey, but well worth it for the quality of work they do.

That's the point. It was none of those things. An 02 sensor went bad, caused a rich condition in the motor, and ruined my cat. The misfiring was a byproduct of the over fueling.

OBDII is too vague to be useful on a miata. Only once CAN bus started to be used on conjunction with OBDII did it start becoming able to pinpoint and self check things to precisely find problems. I'm sure on a newer miata it could maybe be useful.

If you get a miata with OBDII, your going to have to be a slave to the ECU. It severely limits your options compared to a 94 and below miata because you cannot take it out when it comes time for emissions. You either have convert the car to run on the stock ECU every year, or make a compromise and let the stock ECU handle some things and then have a standalone such as a MegaSquirt handle the rest.

So I have this crazy idea to make an ITB system using GSXR 1000 throttle bodies and then 3D printing a runner piece to connect it to the head as well as printing the air horns. GSXR1000 throttle bodies with TPS sensors and all linkages are about $120 on eBay. The 3D printed stuff would cost me about $5 in material considering I already own the printer.

My question is, how interested do you think people would be in me selling this as a kit? Say $180 shipped to your door. Or maybe $50 for just the 3D printed bits and associated mounting hardware/gaskets. Would you guys buy it? RSpeed is close to my house and I wonder if I could market it to them to sell.

I'm able to print this stuff out of a nylon/ABS blend that has a fairly high critical glass transition temperature. I don't think it would melt, but I do worry about heat cycling in the long run.
>>
>>14880595
careful with 3d printing, it's great for prototype pieces but once you start talking about subjecting it to significant mechanical stress (heat and cooling cycles, potentially extreme heat, water and salt, vibration and shock) you have to be super careful with your material choices and how you print it.
>>
Yeah i was waiting for them to add manual. Its so much better than automatic.

It makes me happy to see these threads.

My Dad has been a mechanic for Mazda since 1982 when he stopped working for Delorean. In the early 2000s when I was in middle school my dad would buy cheap wrecked miatas and then we would take them completely apart in our garage at home. We would tear these miatas down to just the frame because my dad realized that the spec racing guys needed so many parts that the car was worth more in pieces than put together. Together we stripped down about 50 miatas over the course of several years in our suburban garage. And once we were left with only the frame we would sell the frame to a guy who would then rebuild it back into a spec miata. There are still boxes of odds and ends parts filling our garage, un sellable stuff like rear view mirrors and door handles. Eventually the spec Miata guys started using the newer miatas and our little business became non viable, but every time I see a Miata it makes me happy to remember working on them with my dad late at night and going to Hallett race track and selling parts out of the back of our car.
>>
>>14881995

Yeah it's probably one of my best memories with my dad. He never forced me to help him although I knew he was doing it in order to help our family survive when the economy shit itself in the early 2000s.

As for those extra parts, you're right we could sell em, but oftentimes the time it takes to list on ebay, mail, and send it outweighs the profit.
