Bought a jap STI

I know they are pretty aggressively tuned to Jap 102 RON fuel.

It will be a few months before I can sort out a tuneable ECU and get it remapped to local fuel.

What are the odds of this trashing the car, the best fuel I can regularly get is 99 RON and I don't plan on bouncing the car off the redline.

Just some info if anybody is looking for an older Subaru
1st Gen Impreza: 1993-2001
>1997 and up are all AWD, prior some were FWD
>1.8 (EJ18) or 2.2 (EJ22) liter engines most common; both are reliable with EJ22 being Elder God Tier
>Anemic with 4-speed auto, acceptable with 5-speed manual
>2.5RS Impreza (offered 1998-2001)most desirable 1st get released in US, 2.5 liter (EJ25) motor; head gasket issues
>Modern Subaru head gaskets have fixed any issues, change head gaskets and you will be good forever
>Timing belt should be changed every 90k miles. Pre-97 EJ22 is non-interference engine, but still change the timing belt
>Exterior facelift in 1997, Interior in 1998
>Impreza Outback Sport is a wagon with hood scoops like the RS; looks cool, have a decent following
>Rust is common, areas of interest are rear quarters and fuel filler neck
2nd Gen Impreza
>2002-2003 “Bugeye”
>2004-2005 “Blobeye”
>2006-2007 “Hawkeye”
>Interior update in 2005 (Nicer interior, loss of Momo steering wheel)
>WRX first offered in US in 2002 using a turbo 2.0 liter (EJ20); fairly reliable when maintained properly, but any used WRX you buy will likely have a history of being beaten on. 5-speed is not the strongest.
>STI first offered in US in 2004 using a turbo 2.5 liter (EJ257); more reliable than EJ20 with bulletproof 6-speed, but again any STI you purchase has likely been run hard
>WRX switches to 2.5 liter turbo (EJ255) in 2006 and gets cool guy brake calipers and drive-by-wire, slightly stronger 5-speed
>Normally aspirated models all have an EJ25 variant
>Maintenance and rust from 1st gen applies
>ANY WRX OR STI YOU BUY WILL LIKELY BE BEAT ON. BE PREPARED TO REPLACE YOUR ENGINE IF SELLER HAS POOR MAINTENANCE DOCUMENTATION OR IS PUERTO RICAN
Legacy/Forester
>Legacy and Forester are pretty much the same as the Impreza mechanically
>2.5 liter issues/maintenance apply as well as rust
>Turbo versions of both released in 2004 using an EJ255

I've been looking at a Crosstrek.

I know it's a lifted Impreza, but I have my reasons.

>difficult to get in/out of low-riding cars due to back problems
>shitty roads exacerbate said back problems when driving
>compact, but still practical to put all my shit in the back (wheelchair, guns, etc)
>range I go 4 times a week is in the middle of an unpaved field and my current car has gotten stuck a couple times getting out there

I'd be going with the manual rather than the CVT.

Got my outback last year after upgrading from a 97 legacy wagon. pretty comfortable ride tbqh, good for rural property, now my neighbor drives the legacy around, apparently to mexico and utah
>>
Bought this '02 wrx last year in june for 3900$ and so far has been pretty good. Had 218k on the clock and so I've replaced the clutch, brakes/rotors, valve shims, fixed the AC and done other general maintenance. That being said, I'm 3200$ in parts fixing it so I'm not sure if my car was a bargain or if its shafting me in the ass. The interior is 9/10 thought which I cling to as my reason for buying the car. The tranny makes an alarming grinding noise when coasting in gear and the tires are a brand that I've never hear of, plus the suspension grinds when it moves going in and out of drive ways. Someone hold me.

pic related, not mne but it has the original wheels and rear spoiler, bottom lips of the bumpers and the side skirts were unpainted plastic though. Shoddy rear arches obligatory

It's basically a modern version of the late 90's and early 2000's Forester, which was also an extremely good vehicle. If you look at an old Forester and a Crosstrek next to each other they're almost the same size.

I'm going to buy a GC8 STi from Nihon soon. I'm torn between getting the regular STi and the type-RA. The RA will be hard to daily but dat acceleration and DCCD. The STi has power windows, ac, and the right amount of sound deadening; also I would be able to get a ver 5 or 6, so I'd have a stronger transmission, which would be better for tuning. Also I fear that tuning a type-RA would result in tire smoking in a gears with not much power being used efficiently because of the hektik gearing. Still, fucking DCCD for drifting...

I'll probably get the STi.
>>
>>14833291
There's no differnence between the two power wise? Weight wise is very minor too?

The main advantage of the RA outside of the tranny changes is a tuneable ECU from stock and better body rigidity which unless you are rallying at world class level I doubt you'll notice
>>
>>14824642
Well thats a fucking huge waste of money.
>>
>>14832581
Why would you create a guide limited to the US on a chinese cartoon board about japanese shitboxes?
>>
>>14833336
Power is the same. The RA is a bit lighter, around 100-150 lbs or something like that (no power options or sound deadening and a bit of aluminum). I was unaware of the ECU thing but let's be honest, I'd probably swap it out for an aftermarket to control boost and run meth injection, et cetera. The RA is 10% quicker to 60 but I'd be able to stay in the power band a bit better too. With a modest tune though, the STi matches the acceleration and is more versatile. I believe the RA had forged pistons as an option, and a ver 3 would also have a closed deck. Though the EJ207 in the ver 5 and 6 is amazing.

The RA looks a little cooler with the roof vent and badge on the rear, plus street cred yo. It's a tough call for me, honestly.

Britfag here, looking at getting an Impreza.
I would love a GC8 2000 tarbo but the rear wheel arch rust is putting me off. Second on the list is a blob eye wrx, since I can stand the looks. How do they fare with rust?

Really what I want is and turbo AWD rally style car that makes a comfy and fun DD. I'm not really sure I need an STi so haven't really considered one. Would it be worth stumping up the extra cash?

>Will you regularly drive somewhere that is twisty enough for it to be in its element?

>Will your insurance rape your wallet because it's a 2 door? (Haven't been in the UK a bit so can't remember)

>Will you enjoy the trade of less acceleration for more control?

>Will you be able to deal with only shipping amputees or small children in the back seats?
>>
>>14833742
My daily commute is a fun b-road, sometimes a bit of motorway driving. I'm in N. Ireland which has a lot of great roads. My insurance quotes haven't been too bad, I've got a clean licence and 5 years NCB. I chose a Swift Sport over everything else because I loved the way it handled, and I've never really used the back seats in the three years I've had the car.

The only spanner in the works is the Fiesta ST. I love the way the BRZ looks and the idea of moving to RWD, but the Fiesta is faster and cheaper too.
>>
>>14833800
Pretty tough but I'd recommend going to the stealerships and asking to test drive your commute. Compare how they feel during the whole drive.
>>
>>14833830
Thanks, I doubt they'd be too keen to let me go that far but it's worth a try.
>>
>>14833392
All STI's had forged pistons in that era did they not, at least for V2 until V7 where I believe they stopped. Not taht the Subaru forged are any better.

10% sounds a bit crazy, 0-60's I see on normal STI's are in the 4.9 region, I really doubt the RA's are getting 4.4 0-60 times.

Yep mine. It's a 2.5i manual Safety Pack, not a GT though, Aus. The GT's auto isn't too bad but it's still an auto. That said I think this gen Legacy is a relatively well aged car now. You're not really comparing apples to apples. I'd wait and get a manual GT if possible instead.

The RA does it in 4.5 or less, correct. It's a really tough call for me, honestly. It'll be easier to find a ver 6 than an RA of any year, but I feel like I'll regret missing out on the DCCD. If I take it on the toegay, I might not have as much fun.

Question for you guys. On the DCCD you can set full 50 50 lock, or shift the power back, maximum being 65 rear. What is the distribution on the regular c diff? It's not active, is it? I would guess 60 40 but I'm not sure at all.
